One-step synthesis of strongly confined, defect-free and hydroxy-terminated ZnO quantum dots

Inkjet printing of heavy-metal-free quantum dots-based devices: a review

Inkjet printing (IJP) has become a versatile, cost-effective technology for fabricating organic and hybrid electronic devices. Heavy-metal-based quantum dots (HM QDs) play a significant role in these inkjet-printed devices due to their excellent optoelectrical properties. Despite their utility, the intrinsic toxicity of HM QDs limits their applications in commercial products. To address this limitation, developing alternative HM-free quantum dots (HMF QDs) that have equivalent optoelectronic properties to HM QD is a promising approach to reduce toxicity and environmental impact. This article comprehensively reviews HMF QD-based devices fabricated using IJP methods. The discussion includes the basics of IJP technology, the formulation of printable HMF QD inks, and solutions to the coffee ring effect. Additionally, this review briefly explores the performance of typical state-of-the-art HMF QDs and cutting-edge characterization techniques for QD inks and printed QD films. The performance of printed devices based on HMF QDs is discussed and compared with those fabricated by other techniques. In the conclusion, the persisting challenges are identified, and perspectives on potential avenues for further progress in this rapidly developing research field are provided.

Unexpected Electronic Features of NiO Quantum Dots Produced by Femtosecond Pulsed Laser Ablation in Water

This study examines the effect of quantum confinement and surface orientations on the electronic properties of NiO quantum dots. It compares NiO nanocrystals produced via atmospheric-pressure microplasma and femtosecond laser (fs-laser) ablation in water, finding that both methods yield quantum-confined nanocrystals with a defined face-centered cubic lattice. Notably, fs-laser synthesis generates crystalline nanocrystals from both crystalline and amorphous targets. While the electronic properties, i.e., energy of the highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), of microplasma-synthesized NiO nanocrystals are consistent with the literature, the electronic characteristics of NiO nanocrystals produced by a fs-laser, particularly the high-lying LUMO level, are unusual for NiO quantum dots. Supported by density functional theory calculations, we show that the observed level positions are related to the different polar and nonpolar faces of the nanocrystal surface.

A Single-Step Process to Produce Carbon Nanotube-Zinc Compound Hybrid Materials

An atmospheric-pressure plasma system is developed and is used to treat carbon nanotube assemblies, producing a hybrid carbon-zinc structure. This system is integrated into a floating-catalyst chemical vapor deposition furnace used for the synthesis of macroscopic assemblies of carbon nanotubes to allow for the in-line, continuous, and single-step production of nano-composite materials. Material is deposited from a sacrificial zinc wire in the form of nanoparticles and can coat the surface of the individual carbon nanotubes as they form. Additionally, it is found that the deposited materials penetrate further into the carbon nanotube matrix than a comparable post-synthesis deposition, improving the uniformity of the material through the thickness. Thus, a single-step metal-based coating and carbon nanotube synthesis process which can form the basis of production scale manufacturing of metal-carbon nanotube composite materials with an atmospheric-pressure plasma system are demonstrated.

Journey of ZnO quantum dots from undoped to rare-earth and transition metal-doped and their applications

Currently, developments in the field of quantum dots (QDs) have attracted researchers worldwide. A large variety of QDs have been discovered in the few years, which have excellent optoelectronic, antibacterial, magnetic, and other properties. However, ZnO is the single known material that can exist in the quantum state and can hold all the above properties. There is a lot of work going on in this field and we will be shorthanded if we do not accommodate this treasure at one place. This manuscript will prove to be a milestone in this noble cause. Having a tremendous potential, there is a developing enthusiasm toward the application of ZnO QDs in diverse areas. Sol-gel method being the simplest is the widely-favored synthetic method. Synthesis via this method is largely affected by a number of factors such as the reaction temperature, duration of the reaction, type of solvent, pH of the solution, and the precipitating agent. Doping enhances the optical, magnetic, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, and other properties of ZnO QDs. However, doping elements reside mostly on the surface of the QDs. The presence of doping elements inside the core is still a major challenge for doping techniques. In this review article, we have focused on pure, rare-earth, and transition metal-doped ZnO QD properties, and the various synthetic processes and applications. Quantum confinement effect is present in nearly every aspect of the QDs. The effect of quantum confinement has also been summarized in this manuscript. Furthermore, the doping of rare earth elements and transition metal, synthetic methods for different organic molecule-capped ZnO QDs, mechanisms for reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, drug delivery system for cancer treatment, and many more application are discussed in this paper.

The role of kaolin and kaolin/ZnO nanoadsorbents in adsorption studies for tannery wastewater treatment

In the present study, comparative studies of kaolin and kaolin/ZnO nanocomposites for the adsorption of Cr(VI), Fe(III), COD, BOD, and chloride from tannery wastewater were investigated. ZnO nanoparticles and kaolin/ZnO nanocomposites were prepared by sol-gel followed by wet-impregnation methods. The prepared adsorbents were characterized using different analytical tools such as X-ray diffraction, Fourier transforms infrared, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, selective area electron diffraction and Brunauer Emmett-Teller (BET) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The HRSEM/EDS/XPS analysis confirmed successful immobilization of clay structural network on the lattice layers of zincite hexagonal structure of ZnO nanoparticles. BET measurement showed an increase in the surface area of kaolin/ZnO nanocomposites (31.8 m²/g) when compared to kaolin (17 m²/g). Batch adsorption studies were carried out by varying the parameters such as contact time, adsorbent dosage and temperature. The maximum removal of Cr(VI) (100%), Fe(III) (98%), COD (95%), BOD (94%) and Chloride (78%) was obtained at 15 min by kaolin/ZnO composites. While 78% Cr(VI), 91% Fe(III), 91% COD, 89% BOD and 73% Chloride were removed by kaolin under the same conditions. The kaolin/ZnO nanocomposites exhibited better adsorption performance than kaolin due to higher surface area of the former than the latter. It was found that the Jovanovic isotherm model fitted the adsorption experimental data most with the highest correlation (R² > 0.99) for both nanoadsorbents and indicate the occurrence of adsorption on monolayer and heterogeneous surfaces. The mechanism for the adsorption of metal ions in tannery wastewater onto the nano-adsorbents was examined using Weber Morris intra-particle diffusion model and Boyd plot which showed that the adsorption process was both intra-particle and film diffusion controlled. The thermodynamic parameters such as enthalpy change showed that that adsorption of metal ions and other parameters was feasible, spontaneous and endothermic. The ZnO/clay nanocomposites exhibited excellent recyclable and re-useable properties even after six repeated applications and can, therefore, be applied in wastewater treatment for removal of heavy metals and other physicochemical parameters.
