Unified treatment of electron-ion recombination in the close-coupling approximation

Enhancement of Spontaneous Photon Emission in Inverse Photoemission Transitions in Semiconductor Quantum Dots

Inverse photoemission (IPE) is a radiative electron capture process where an electron is transiently captured in the conduction band (CB) followed by intraband de-excitation and spontaneous photon emission. IPE in quantum dots (QDs) bypasses optical selection rules for populating the CB and provides insights into the capacity for electron capture in the CB, the propensity for spontaneous photon emission, intraband transition energies where both initial and final states are in the CB, and the generation of photons with frequencies lower than the bandgap. Here, we demonstrate using time-dependent perturbation theory that judicious application of electric fields can significantly enhance the IPE transition in QDs. For a series of CdSe, CdS, PbSe, and PbS QDs, we present evidence of field-induced enhancement of IPE intensities (188% for Cd54Se54), field-dependent control of emitted photon frequencies (Δω = 0.73 eV for Cd54Se54), and enhancement of light-matter interaction using directed Stark fields (103% for Cd54Se54).

Experimental and Theoretical Study of Photoionization of Cl III

Photoionization of Cl III ions into Cl IV was studied theoretically using the ab initio relativistic Breit–Pauli R-matrix (BPRM) method and experimentally at the Advanced Light Source (ALS) synchrotron at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. A relative-ion-yield spectrum of Cl IV was measured with a photon energy resolution of 10 meV. The theoretical study was carried out using a large wave-function expansion of 45 levels of configurations 3s23p2, 3s3p3, 3s23p3d, 3s23p4s, 3s3p23d, and 3p4. The resulting spectra are complex. We have compared the observed spectrum with photoionization cross sections (σPI) of the ground state 3s23p3(4S3/2o) and the seven lowest excited levels 3s23p3(2D5/2o), 3s23p3(2D3/2o), 3s23p3(2P3/2o), 3s23p3(2P1/2o), 3s3p4(4P5/2), 3s3p4(4P3/2) and 3s3p4(4P1/2) of Cl III, as these can generate resonances within the energy range of the experiment. We were able to identify most of the resonances as belonging to various specific initial levels within the primary Cl III ion beam. Compared to the first five levels, resonant structures in the σPI of excited levels of 3s3p4 appear to have a weaker presence. We have also produced combined theoretical spectra of the levels by convolving the cross sections with a Gaussian profile of experimental width and summing them using statistical weight factors. The theoretical and experimental features show good agreement with the first five levels of Cl III. These features are also expected to elucidate the recent observed spectra of Cl III by Sloan Digital Scan Survey project.

Photoionization and Electron-Ion Recombination of n = 1 to Very High n-Values of Hydrogenic Ions

Single electron hydrogen or hydrogenic ions have analytical forms to evaluate the atomic parameters for the inverse processes of photoionization and electron-ion recombination (H I + hν↔ H II + e) where H is hydrogen. Studies of these processes have continued until the present day (i) as the computations are restricted to lower principle quantum number n and (ii) to improve the accuracy. The analytical expressions have many terms and there are numerical instabilities arising from cancellations of terms. Strategies for fast convergence of contributions were developed but precise computations are still limited to lower n. This report gives a brief review of the earlier precise methodologies for hydrogen, and presents numerical tables of photoionization cross sections (σPI), and electron-ion recombination rate coefficients (αRC) obtained from recombination cross sections (σRC) for all n values going to a very high value of 800. σPI was obtained using the precise formalism of Burgess and Seaton, and Burgess. αRC was obtained through a finite integration that converge recombination exactly as implemented in the unified method of recombination of Nahar and Pradhan. Since the total electron-ion recombination includes all levels for n = 1–∞, the total asymptotic contribution of n = 801–∞, called the top-up, is obtained through a n−3 formula. A FORTRAN program “hpxrrc.f” is provided to compute photoionization cross sections, recombination cross sections and rate coefficients for any nl. The results on hydrogen atom can be used to obtain those for any hydrogenic ion of charge z through z-scaling relations provided in the theory section. The present results are of high precision and complete for astrophysical modelings.

The XSTAR Atomic Database

We describe the atomic database of the xstar spectral modeling code, summarizing the systematic upgrades carried out in the past twenty years to enable the modeling of K-lines from chemical elements with atomic number Z≤30 and recent extensions to handle high-density plasmas. Such plasma environments are found, for instance, in the inner region of accretion disks round compact objects (neutron stars and black holes), which emit rich information about the system’s physical properties. Our intention is to offer a reliable modeling tool to take advantage of the outstanding spectral capabilities of the new generation of X-ray space telescopes (e.g., xrism and athena) to be launched in the coming years. Data curatorial aspects are discussed and an updated list of reference sources is compiled to improve the database provenance metadata. Two xstar spin-offs—the ISMabs absorption model and the uaDB database—are also described.

Database NORAD-Atomic-Data for Atomic Processes in Plasma

The online atomic database of NORAD-Atomic-Data, where NORAD stands for Nahar OSU Radiative, is part of the data sources of the two international collaborations of the Opacity Project (OP) and the Iron Project (IP). It contains large sets of parameters for the dominant atomic processes in astrophysical plasmas, such as, (i) photo-excitation, (ii) photoionization, (iii) electron–ion recombination, (iv) electron–impact excitations. The atomic parameters correspond to tables of energy levels, level-specific total photoionization cross-sections, partial photoionization cross-sections of all bound states for leaving the residual ion in the ground state, partial cross-sections of the ground state for leaving the ion in various excited states, total level-specific electron–ion recombination rate coefficients that include both the radiative and dielectronic recombination, total recombination rate coefficients summed from contributions of an infinite number of recombined states, total photo-recombination cross-sections and rates with respect to photoelectron energy, transition probabilities, lifetimes, collision strengths. The database was created after the first two atomic databases, TOPbase under the OP and TIPbase under the IP. Hence the contents of NORAD-Atomic-Data are either new or from repeated calculations using a much larger wave function expansion making the data more complete. The results have been obtained from the R-matrix method using the close-coupling approximation developed under the OP and IP, and from atomic structure calculations using the program SUPERSTRUCTURE. They have been compared with available published results which have been obtained theoretically and experimentally, and are expected to be of high accuracy in general. All computations were carried out using the computational facilities at the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) starting in 1990. At present it contains atomic data for 154 atomic species, 98 of which are lighter atomic species with nuclear charge Z ≤ 28 and 56 are heavier ones with Z > 28. New data are added with publications.

Optical design of a stigmatic extreme-ultraviolet spectroscopic system for emission and absorption studies of laser-produced plasmas

The design of a stigmatic spectroscopic system for diagnostics of laser-produced plasmas in the 2.5-40-nm region is presented. The system consists of a grazing-incidence toroidal mirror that focuses the radiation emitted by a laser-produced plasma onto the entrance slit of a spectrograph. The latter has a grazing-incidence spherical variable-line-spaced grating with flat-field properties coupled to a spherical focusing mirror that compensates for the astigmatism. The mirror is crossed with respect to the grating; i.e., it is mounted with its tangential plane coincident with the equatorial plane of the grating. The spectrum is acquired by an extreme-UV- (EUV-) enhanced CCD detector with high quantum efficiency. This stigmatic design also has spectral and spatial resolution capability for extended sources: The spectral resolution is also preserved for off-plane points, whereas the spatial resolution decreases for points far from the optical axis. The expected performance is presented and compared with that of a stigmatic design with a plane variable-line-spaced grating illuminated in converging light.
