Dynamic behavior of elevators under random inflow of passengers

Elevators can be regarded as oscillators driven by the calls of passengers who arrive randomly. We study the dynamic behavior of elevators during the down peak period numerically and analytically. We assume that new passengers arrive at each floor according to a Poisson process and call the elevators to go down to the ground floor. We numerically examine how the round-trip time of a single elevator depends on the inflow rate of passengers at each floor and reproduce it by a self-consistent equation considering the combination of floors where the call occurs. By setting an order parameter, we show that the synchronization of two elevators occurs irrespective of final destination (whether the elevators did or did not go to the top floor). It indicates that the spontaneous ordering of elevators emerges from the Poisson noise. We also reproduce the round-trip time of two elevators by a self-consistent equation considering the interaction through the existence of passengers and the absence of volume exclusion. Those results suggest that such interaction stabilizes and characterizes the spontaneous ordering of elevators.

Morphological inversion of complex diffusion

Epidemics, neural cascades, power failures, and many other phenomena can be described by a diffusion process on a network. To identify the causal origins of a spread, it is often necessary to identify the triggering initial node. Here, we define a new morphological operator and use it to detect the origin of a diffusive front, given the final state of a complex network. Our method performs better than algorithms based on distance (closeness) and Jordan centrality. More importantly, our method is applicable regardless of the specifics of the forward model, and therefore can be applied to a wide range of systems such as identifying the patient zero in an epidemic, pinpointing the neuron that triggers a cascade, identifying the original malfunction that causes a catastrophic infrastructure failure, and inferring the ancestral species from which a heterogeneous population evolves.

Development of kinks in car-following models

Many car-following models of traffic flow admit the possibility of absolute stability, a situation in which uniform traffic flow at any spacing is linearly stable. Near the threshold of absolute stability, these models can often be reduced to a modified Korteweg-deVries (mKdV) equation plus small corrections. The hyperbolic-tangent "kink" solutions of the mKdV equation are usually of particular interest, as they represent transition zones between regions of different traffic spacings. Solvability analysis is believed to show that only a single member of the one-parameter family of kink solutions is preserved by the correction terms, and this is interpreted as a kind of selection. We show, however, that the usual solvability calculation rests on an unstated, unjustified assumption, and that without this assumption it merely gives a first-order correction to the relation between the traffic spacings far behind and far ahead of the kink, rather than any kind of "selection" criterion for the family of kink solutions. On the other hand, we display a two-parameter family of traveling wave solutions of the mKdV equation, which describe regions of one traffic spacing embedded in traffic of a different spacing; this family includes the kink solutions as a limiting case. We carry out a multiple-time-scales calculation and find conditions under which the inclusions decay, conditions that lead to a selected inclusion, and conditions for which the inclusion evolves into a pair of kinks.

Solitons and kinks in a general car-following model

We study a general car-following model of traffic flow on an infinitely long single-lane road, which assumes that a car's acceleration depends on time-delayed values of its own speed, the headway between it and the car ahead, and the rate of change of headway, but makes minimal assumptions about the functional form of that dependence. We present a detailed characterization of the onset of linear instability; in particular we find a specific limit on the delay time below which the marginal wave number at the onset of instability is zero, and another specific limit on the delay time above which steady flow is always unstable. Crucially, the threshold of absolute stability generally does not coincide with an inflection point of the steady-state velocity function. When the marginal perturbation at onset has wave number 0, we show that Burgers and Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equations can be derived under the usual assumptions, and that corrections to the KdV equation "select" a single member of the one-parameter set of its one-soliton solutions by driving a slow evolution of the soliton parameter. While in previous models this selected soliton has always marked the threshold of a finite-amplitude instability of linearly stable steady flow, we find that it can alternatively be a stable, small-amplitude jam that occurs when steady flow is linearly unstable. The model reduces to the usual modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation only in the special situation that the threshold of absolute stability coincides with an inflection point of the steady-state velocity function; in general, near the threshold of absolute stability the model reduces instead to a KdV equation in the regime of small solitons, while near an inflection point it reduces to a Hayakawa-Nakanishi equation. Like the mKdV equation, the Hayakawa-Nakanishi equation admits a continuous family of kink solutions, and the selection criterion arising from the corrections to this equation can be written down explicitly.

Self-sustained nonlinear waves in traffic flow

In analogy to gas-dynamical detonation waves, which consist of a shock with an attached exothermic reaction zone, we consider herein nonlinear traveling wave solutions to the hyperbolic ("inviscid") continuum traffic equations. Generic existence criteria are examined in the context of the Lax entropy conditions. Our analysis naturally precludes traveling wave solutions for which the shocks travel downstream more rapidly than individual vehicles. Consistent with recent experimental observations from a periodic roadway [Y. Sugiyama, N. J. Phys. 10, 033001 (2008)], our numerical calculations show that nonlinear traveling waves are attracting solutions, with the time evolution of the system converging toward a wave-dominated configuration. Theoretical principles are elucidated by considering examples of traffic flow on open and closed roadways.

Localized subharmonic waves in a circularly vibrated granular bed

Localized period-doubling waves arise in circularly shaken granular beds contained in an annular channel. These solitary wave packets are accompanied by a locally increased particle density. The width and velocity of the granular wave pulse are measured as a function of the bed height. A continuum model for the material distribution, based on the measured granular transport velocity as a function of the bed thickness, captures the essence of the experimental findings.

Stabilization analysis and modified Korteweg-de Vries equation in a cooperative driving system

Two lattice traffic models are proposed by incorporating a cooperative driving system. The lattice versions of the hydrodynamic model of traffic flow are described by the differential-difference equation and difference-difference equation, respectively. The stability conditions for the two models are obtained using the linear stability theory. The results show that considering more than one site ahead in vehicle motion leads to the stabilization of the system. The modified Korteweg-de Vries equation (the mKdV equation, for short) near the critical point is derived by using the reductive perturbation method to show the traffic jam which is proved to be described by kink-anti-kink soliton solutions obtained from the mKdV equations.

Stabilization effect of traffic flow in an extended car-following model based on an intelligent transportation system application

An extended car following model is proposed by incorporating an intelligent transportation system in traffic. The stability condition of this model is obtained by using the linear stability theory. The results show that anticipating the behavior of more vehicles ahead leads to the stabilization of traffic systems. The modified Korteweg-de Vries equation (the mKdV equation, for short) near the critical point is derived by applying the reductive perturbation method. The traffic jam could be thus described by the kink-antikink soliton solution for the mKdV equation. From the simulation of space-time evolution of the vehicle headway, it is shown that the traffic jam is suppressed efficiently with taking into account the information about the motion of more vehicles in front, and the analytical result is consonant with the simulation one.

Density waves in traffic flow of two kinds of vehicles

Through the car-following model, the traffic flow of two types of vehicles (cars and trucks) on a single-lane flow is studied, in which drivers on different vehicles have different sensitivities and the safety distance is assumed to be the same for all vehicles. The linear analysis is carried out to determine the condition of critical stability. With the nonlinear analysis, it proves that the small fluctuation of the vehicle density near the critical stable state satisfies the Korteweg-deVries equation and different sensitivities affect only the soliton evolution. When the headway in the critical state is more than the safety distance, the density around the soliton peak exceeds the density of the critical stable state, which can be explained as the formation of traffic jam. Contrarily, when the headway state is less than the safety distance, drivers will increase the headway to avoid the jam. The direct approach of the soliton perturbation shows that drivers' sensitivity will increase the soliton's amplitude continuously. Moreover, the increase of the number of trucks in the traffic flow will slow down the evolution of the amplitude.

Soliton and kink jams in traffic flow with open boundaries

Soliton density wave is investigated numerically and analytically in the optimal velocity model (a car-following model) of a one-dimensional traffic flow with open boundaries. Soliton density wave is distinguished from the kink density wave. It is shown that the soliton density wave appears only at the threshold of occurrence of traffic jams. The Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation is derived from the optimal velocity model by the use of the nonlinear analysis. It is found that the traffic soliton appears only near the neutral stability line. The soliton solution is analytically obtained from the perturbed KdV equation. It is shown that the soliton solution obtained from the nonlinear analysis is consistent with that of the numerical simulation.

Jamming transition in a two-dimensional traffic flow model

Phase transition and critical phenomenon are investigated in the two-dimensional traffic flow numerically and analytically. The one-dimensional lattice hydrodynamic model of traffic is extended to the two-dimensional traffic flow in which there are two types of cars (northbound and eastbound cars). It is shown that the phase transition among the freely moving phase, the coexisting phase, and the uniformly congested phase occurs below the critical point. Above the critical point, no phase transition occurs. The value a(c) of the critical point decreases as increasing fraction c of the eastbound cars for c<or=0.5. The linear stability theory is applied. The neutral stability lines are found. The time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equation is derived by the use of nonlinear analysis. The phase separation lines, the spinodal lines, and the critical point are calculated from the TDGL equation.
