Patterns in thin vibrated granular layers: interfaces, hexagons, and superoscillons

Origin of jumping oscillons in an excitable reaction-diffusion system

Oscillons, i.e., immobile spatially localized but temporally oscillating structures, are the subject of intense study since their discovery in Faraday wave experiments. However, oscillons can also disappear and reappear at a shifted spatial location, becoming jumping oscillons (JOs). We explain here the origin of this behavior in a three-variable reaction-diffusion system via numerical continuation and bifurcation theory, and show that JOs are created via a modulational instability of excitable traveling pulses (TPs). We also reveal the presence of bound states of JOs and TPs and patches of such states (including jumping periodic patterns) and determine their stability. This rich multiplicity of spatiotemporal states lends itself to information and storage handling.

Oscillating decorated interfaces in parametrically driven systems

Macroscopic systems forced by the temporal modulation of their parameters exhibit complex interfaces between symmetric states. Here we investigate the origin of the transition from a flat to an oscillating decorated interface. Based on a model that describes a magnetic plane under the influence of an oscillating magnetic field and an extended Josephson junction under the influence of an alternating current, we derive a simple model that accounts for the interface dynamics. Analytically this model allows us to reveal that this transition is a parametric resonance between the frequencies of interface modes and the forcing. Numerical simulations of magnetic systems, extended Josephson junctions, and our simplified model show quite good agreement.

Comb-like Turing patterns embedded in Hopf oscillations: Spatially localized states outside the 2:1 frequency locked region

A generic mechanism for the emergence of spatially localized states embedded in an oscillatory background is demonstrated by using a 2:1 frequency locking oscillatory system. The localization is of Turing type and appears in two space dimensions as a comb-like state in either π phase shifted Hopf oscillations or inside a spiral core. Specifically, the localized states appear in absence of the well known flip-flop dynamics (associated with collapsed homoclinic snaking) that is known to arise in the vicinity of Hopf-Turing bifurcation in one space dimension. Derivation and analysis of three Hopf-Turing amplitude equations in two space dimensions reveal a local dynamics pinning mechanism for Hopf fronts, which in turn allows the emergence of perpendicular (to the Hopf front) Turing states. The results are shown to agree well with the comb-like core size that forms inside spiral waves. In the context of 2:1 resonance, these localized states form outside the 2:1 resonance region and thus extend the frequency locking domain for spatially extended media, such as periodically driven Belousov-Zhabotinsky chemical reactions. Implications to chlorite-iodide-malonic-acid and shaken granular media are also addressed.

Oscillons, solitons, and domain walls in arrays of nonlinear plasmonic nanoparticles

The study of metal nanoparticles plays a central role in the emerging novel technologies employing optics beyond the diffraction limit. Combining strong surface plasmon resonances, high intrinsic nonlinearities and deeply subwavelength scales, arrays of metal nanoparticles offer a unique playground to develop novel concepts for light manipulation at the nanoscale. Here we suggest a novel principle to control localized optical energy in chains of nonlinear subwavelength metal nanoparticles based on the fundamental nonlinear phenomenon of modulation instability. In particular, we demonstrate that modulation instability can lead to the formation of long-lived standing and moving nonlinear localized modes of several distinct types such as bright and dark solitons, oscillons, and domain walls. We analyze the properties of these nonlinear localized modes and reveal different scenarios of their dynamics including transformation of one type of mode to another. We believe this work paves a way towards the development of nonlinear nanophotonics circuitry.

Separation patterns between Brazilian nut and reversed Brazilian nut of a binary granular system

This paper studies the segregation behavior of binary granular particles with diameters at approximately 10:1 in a vertically vibrated container. An array of transitional separation patterns between reversed Brazilian nut (RBN) and Brazilian nut (BN) separations are observed, with their geometrical features carefully measured. The binary particle system develops into either a stable separation pattern when f and Γ are relatively low or an oscillating pattern when f and Γ are relatively high. We regard these patterns as different phases, in which the stable patterns can be divided into phases of RBN, RBN transitional (RBNT), BNT, and BN. A phase parameter λ between-1 and 1 is defined to describe the separation patterns based on the mass center height difference in large and small particles. By drawing f-Γ-λ phase diagrams, the system's tendency toward BN separation was found to increase with f and decrease with Γ. Furthermore, the range of the tendency toward BN separation expands when the size of small particles rises. As the total mass of the small particles increases, the system's tendency toward RBN separation is enhanced. Abnormal points are also observed in the stable phase regions, and the oscillating phase shifts among the four stable phases with time. These stable phases can be explained via an analysis of the distribution of the dissipation energy, whereas the mechanism of the oscillating phase remains to be discovered.

Reciprocal oscillons and nonmonotonic fronts in forced nonequilibrium systems

The formation of oscillons in a synchronously oscillating background is studied in the context of both damped and self-exciting oscillatory media. Using the forced complex Ginzburg-Landau equation we show that such states bifurcate from finite amplitude homogenous states near the 2:1 resonance boundary. In each case we identify a region in parameter space containing a finite multiplicity of coexisting stable oscillons with different structure. Stable time-periodic monotonic and nonmonotonic frontlike states are present in an overlapping region. Both types of structure are related to the presence of a Maxwell point between the zero and finite amplitude homogeneous states.

Nearest pattern interaction and global pattern formation

We studied the effect of nearest pattern interaction on a global pattern formation in a two-dimensional space, where patterns are to grow initially from a noise in the presence of a periodic supply of energy. Although our approach is general, we found that this study is relevant in particular to the pattern formation on a periodically vibrated granular layer, as it gives a unified perspective of the experimentally observed pattern dynamics such as oscillon and stripe formations, skew-varicose and crossroll instabilities, and also a kink formation and decoration.
