Fragile magnetic ground state in half-doped LaSr2Mn2O7

Complex structural ordering of the oxygen deficiency in La0.5Ca2.5Mn2O7-δ Ruddlesden-Popper phases

Ruddlesden-Popper oxides, (AO)(ABO₃)_n, occupy a prominent place in the landscape of materials research because of their intriguing potential applications. Compositional modifications to the cation sublattices, A or B, have been explored in order to achieve enhanced functionalities. However, changes to the anionic sublattice have been much less explored. In this work, new oxygen-deficient manganese Ruddlesden-Popper-related phases, La_0.5Ca_2.5Mn₂O_6.5 and La_0.5Ca_2.5Mn₂O_6.25, have been synthesized by controlled reduction of the fully oxidized n = 2 term La_0.5Ca_2.5Mn₂O₇. A complete structural and compositional characterization, by means of neutron diffraction, electron diffraction and atomically resolved scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy techniques, allows the proposition of a topotactic reduction pathway through preferential oxygen removal in the [MnO₂] layers along [031] and [0{\bar 1}3] directions. The gradual decrease of the Mn oxidation state, accommodated by short-range ordering of anionic vacancies, reasonably explains the breaking of ferromagnetic interactions reinforcing the emergence of antiferromagnetic ones. Additional short-range order-disorder phenomena of La and Ca cations have been detected in the reduced La_0.5Ca_2.5Mn₂O_7-δ, as previously reported in the parent compound.

Influence of Fe substitution on the Jahn-Teller distortion and orbital anisotropy in orthorhombic Y(Mn1-xFex)O3 epitaxial films

Multiferroic YMn1-xFexO3(020) (x = 0.125, 0.25, 0.50) epitaxial thin films with an orthorhombic structure (space group Pbnm) were prepared on a YAlO3(010) substrate by pulsed-laser deposition. Upon Fe substitution, the b-axis was clearly shortened, whereas the a- and c-axes were slightly lengthened based on XRD analysis. To understand the influence of orbital polarization and the Jahn-Teller effect of Mn(3+) on Fe substitution and also the local octahedral-site distortion of Fe(3+) in an environment of Jahn-Teller-active Mn(3+) ions in YMn1-xFexO3 films, we measured the polarization-dependent X-ray absorption spectra at the Mn-L2,3 and Fe-L2,3 edges, and also simulated the experimental spectra using configuration-interaction multiplet calculations. Although Δeg for the Mn(3+) ion decreased from 0.9 eV in pure YMnO3 to 0.6 eV in the half-Fe-substituted sample, a single eg electron was still strongly constrained to the d3y(2)-r(2) orbital for all the Fe concentrations tested. The largest Δeg, 0.5 eV, for the Fe(3+) ion was derived for a sample with 12.5% Fe substitution, and gradually decreased to 0.15 eV for the half-Fe-substituted sample. The local octahedral-site distortion of the Fe(3+) ion inside the YMnO3 lattice was similar to that of the Mn(3+) ion, whereas the Jahn-Teller distortion and GdFeO3-type distortion of the Mn(3+) ion were decreased by the spherical high-spin Fe(3+) ions. The combination of the experimental and theoretical data provides both profound insight into the variation of the Jahn-Teller distortion and orbital anisotropy and instructive information about the magnetic structures in these orthorhombic YMn1-xFexO3 thin films.

Evidence of photo-induced dynamic competition of metallic and insulating phase in a layered manganite

We show evidence that the competition between the antiferromagetic metallic phase and the charge- and orbital-ordered insulating phase at the reentrant phase boundary of a layered manganite, La0.99Sr2.01Mn2O7, can be manipulated using ultrafast optical excitation. The time-dependent evolution of the Jahn-Teller superlattice reflection, which indicates the formation of the charge and orbital order, was measured at different laser fluences. The laser-induced enhancement and reduction the Jahn-Teller reflection intensity shows a reversal of sign between earlier (~10 ns) and later (~150 ns) time delays during the relaxation after photo excitation. This effect is consistent with a scenario whereby the laser excitation modulates the local competition between the metallic and the insulating phases.

Form factor dispersion at La M5,4 edges and average density of resonant atoms

Resonant soft x-ray scattering on complex oxide superlattices shows very large variations in the superlattice reflection position and intensity near La M5,4 edges. Resonant dispersion of the La x-ray form factor describes the observations well. We determine the average density of resonant La atoms and the thickness of superlattice layers.

Resonant elastic soft x-ray scattering

Resonant (elastic) soft x-ray scattering (RSXS) offers a unique element, site and valence specific probe to study spatial modulations of charge, spin and orbital degrees of freedom in solids on the nanoscopic length scale. It is not only used to investigate single-crystalline materials. This method also enables one to examine electronic ordering phenomena in thin films and to zoom into electronic properties emerging at buried interfaces in artificial heterostructures. During the last 20 years, this technique, which combines x-ray scattering with x-ray absorption spectroscopy, has developed into a powerful probe to study electronic ordering phenomena in complex materials and furthermore delivers important information on the electronic structure of condensed matter. This review provides an introduction to the technique, covers the progress in experimental equipment, and gives a survey on recent RSXS studies of ordering in correlated electron systems and at interfaces.

Artificial construction of the layered Ruddlesden-Popper manganite La2Sr2Mn3O10 by reflection high energy electron diffraction monitored pulsed laser deposition

Pulsed laser deposition has been used to artificially construct the n = 3 Ruddlesden-Popper structure La(2)Sr(2)Mn(3)O(10) in epitaxial thin film form by sequentially layering La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) and SrO unit cells aided by in situ reflection high energy electron diffraction monitoring. The interval deposition technique was used to promote two-dimensional SrO growth. X-ray diffraction and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy indicated that the trilayer structure had been formed. A site ordering was found to differ from that expected thermodynamically, with the smaller Sr(2+) predominantly on the R site due to kinetic trapping of the deposited cation sequence. A dependence of the out-of-plane lattice parameter on growth pressure was interpreted as changing the oxygen content of the films. Magnetic and transport measurements on fully oxygenated films indicated a frustrated magnetic ground state characterized as a spin glass-like magnetic phase with the glass temperature T(g) ≈ 34 K. The magnetic frustration has a clear in-plane (ab) magnetic anisotropy, which is maintained up to temperatures of 150 K. Density functional theory calculations suggest competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic long-range orders, which are proposed as the origin of the low-temperature glassy state.

Response of acoustic phonons to charge and orbital order in the 50% doped bilayer manganite LaSr2Mn2O7

We report an inelastic neutron scattering study of acoustic phonons in the charge and orbitally ordered bilayer manganite LaSr(2)Mn(2)O(7). For excitation energies less than 15 meV, we observe an abrupt increase (decrease) of the phonon energies (linewidths) of a transverse acoustic phonon branch at q = (h, h, 0), h ≤ 0.3, upon entering the low temperature charge and orbital ordered state (T(COO) = 225 K). This indicates a reduced electron-phonon coupling due to a decrease of electronic states at the Fermi level leading to a partial removal of the Fermi surface below T(COO) and provides direct experimental evidence for a link between electron-phonon coupling and charge order in manganites.
