Size segregation and convection of granular mixtures almost completely packed in a thin rotating Box

Segregation and phase inversion of strongly and weakly fluctuating Brownian particle mixtures and a chain of such particle mixtures in spherical containers

We investigate the segregation pattern formation of strongly and weakly fluctuating Brownian particle mixtures confined in a three-dimensional spherical container. We consider systems where the particle motion is restricted by the harmonic external trapping potential and the container edge wall. In such systems, two segregation patterns are observed. When the container radius is sufficiently large, more weakly fluctuating particles accumulate near the center of the container than strongly fluctuating particles. On the other hand, the distributions of the strongly and weakly fluctuating particles are inverted when the container radius is small. With no external trapping potentials, we find similar segregation and phase inversion if the particles construct a chain (heterofluctuating polymer) and are confined in a three-dimensional spherical container. We could apply these phenomena in the study of biopolymer behavior, such as chromosomes in the cell nucleus.

Segregation-pattern reorientation of a granular mixture on a horizontally oscillating tray

Reorientation of the segregation pattern of a binary granular mixture on a two-dimensional horizontally oscillating tray is numerically realized. The mixture consists of large and heavy particles and small and light particles, and the segregation pattern shows a transition between a striped pattern perpendicular to the oscillation and one parallel to the oscillating direction according to the change of area fractions of the two types of particle. The transition mechanism is discussed on the basis of a simplified one-dimensional dynamics.

Oscillations, cessations, and circulation reversals of granular convection in a densely filled rotating container

We study spontaneously forming convection in a container that is almost completely filled with a bidisperse granular mixture. The container with an aspect ratio close to 1 rotates slowly about a horizontal axis. In this geometry, single vortex rolls are observed in the cell plane, after a spontaneous symmetry breaking. The circulation of grains produces nonuniform segregation patterns of the mixture that in turn interact with the convective flow. We describe oscillatory modulations of the convection velocity, cessations and spontaneous reversals of the circulation. All these features are absent in multiroll granular convection.

Traveling wave of segregation in a highly filled rotating drum

The dynamics of a segregation pattern for a granular mixture in a highly filled rotating drum were studied. A spontaneously segregated band pattern traveled laterally and was accompanied by the repeated creation of new bands near the center of the drum and annihilation at both of its ends. The presence of nearly stationary convection plays an essential role in causing this traveling wave. Based on direct observations of both the interior and the exterior of the segregation pattern, this spatiotemporal pattern is interpreted in terms of a one-dimensional Cahn-Hilliard equation by including the effect of stationary convection.

Geometric aspects of particle segregation

Size segregation is a natural occurrence both in everyday life and in industrial processes. Understanding and research of the phenomenon has overwhelmingly been from a mechanistic point of view. This paper demonstrates through simulations that segregation can also be explained and trends predicted geometrically. The algorithm used in this study contains three simple elements: random walks combined with a rebounding probability to encourage particles to settle, plus the non-overlap constraint. It is implemented digitally in a regular lattice grid, to make it easy to deal with arbitrary shapes. It does not explicitly consider any particle interaction forces, and it does not include any rules specifically designed to promote or suppress segregation. Yet particle movement, which occurs within a digitized cubic grid, leads to shaking-induced segregation comparable to that observed in physical tests. The paper details the comparison of shaking-induced particle segregation between a series of computer based simulations and those of physical experiments undertaken in the laboratory. A range of mixtures, comprising nonspherical, arbitrary shaped/sized particles are investigated, having been packed into pseudo-two-dimensional containers. The simulation results suggest that segregation can be adequately explained, from a geometrical point of view, as a result of the relative motion between particles of different sizes and shapes. The geometrical algorithm thus provides a fast and qualitative prediction as to how likely segregation is to occur for any given mixture of arbitrary shapes.

On the brink of jamming: granular convection in densely filled containers

Granulates are ubiquitous in nature and technology, but, despite their great importance, their dynamics are by far less well understood than those of liquids. We demonstrate in an almost compactly filled flat (Hele-Shaw) cell, where slow horizontal rotation simulates a variable gravitational force, that unexpected dynamic structures may arise under geometrical restrictions. The cell motion drives regular flow in the compact interior, and convection rolls combine with segregation. The container fill level is crucial for the dynamic regime. A transition from chute flow at lower fill levels to convection in densely packed containers is found. These observations suggest the existence of comparable phenomena in situations where so far no systematic search for dynamic patterns has been performed.

Influences of the interstitial liquid on segregation patterns of granular slurries in a rotating drum

Granular mixtures immersed in a liquid (slurries) show segregation dynamics which are quantitatively and qualitatively different from those of dry systems. The principal mechanisms of the segregation dynamics in slurries, as well as the relevant material parameters that must be taken into account in a dynamic description are not sufficiently understood so far. We investigate experimentally the influence of the viscosity of the interstitial liquid on the coarsening of axial segregation patterns in a horizontally rotating mixer. It is found that not only the characteristic time scales but also fundamental structural features of these patterns are influenced by the viscous properties of the liquid component.

Coarsening of axial segregation patterns of slurries in a horizontally rotating drum

Segregation structures of granular mixtures in rotating drums represent classical examples of pattern formation in granular material. We investigate the coarsening of axial segregation patterns of slurries in a long horizontally rotating cylinder. The dynamics and the three-dimensional geometry of the segregation structures are analyzed with optical methods and nuclear magnetic resonance imaging. Previous studies have mainly considered global statistical features of the pattern dynamics. In order to get insight into driving mechanisms for the coarsening process, we focus on the details of the dissolution of individual bands. We treat the coarsening as a consequence of interactions of adjacent bands in the pattern, which are determined by their geometrical relations. In addition to initially homogeneous mixtures, which evolve to spontaneously formed patterns, we study the evolution of specially prepared simple initial states. The role of the three-dimensional geometry of the axial core in the dissolution process of segregation bands is demonstrated. Relations between geometry and dynamic processes are established, which may help to find the correct microscopic models for the coarsening mechanism.

Ratchet-induced segregation and transport of nonspherical grains

We consider through simulations the behavior of elongated grains on a vibrating ratchet-shaped base. We observe differences in layer velocity profile and in net grain velocity for grains that are composed of one, two, or three collinear spheres. In the case of mixtures of different species of grains, we demonstrate layer-by-layer variation in the average velocity as well as layer segregation of species, and show that horizontal separation of the species can be achieved using this geometry. We also find that the addition of a small number of shorter grains to a sample of long grains provides a lubrication effect that increases the velocity of the long grains.
