Remanent zero field spin splitting of self-assembled quantum dots in a paramagnetic host

Energetic hot electrons from exciton-to-hot electron upconversion in Mn-doped semiconductor nanocrystals

Generation of hot electrons and their utilization in photoinduced chemical processes have been the subjects of intense research in recent years mostly exploring hot electrons in plasmonic metal nanostructures created via decay of optically excited plasmon. Here, we present recent progress made in generation and utilization of a different type of hot electrons produced via biphotonic exciton-to-hot electron "upconversion" in Mn-doped semiconductor nanocrystals. Compared to the plasmonic hot electrons, those produced via biphotonic upconversion in Mn-doped semiconductor nanocrystals possess much higher energy, enabling more efficient long-range electron transfer across the high energy barrier. They can even be ejected above the vacuum level creating photoelectrons, which can possibly produce solvated electrons. Despite the biphotonic nature of the upconversion process, hot electrons can be generated with weak cw excitation equivalent to the concentrated solar radiation without requiring intense or high-energy photons. This perspective reviews recent work elucidating the mechanism of generating energetic hot electrons in Mn-doped semiconductor nanocrystals, detection of these hot electrons as photocurrent or photoelectron emission, and their utilization in chemical processes such as photocatalysis. New opportunities that the energetic hot electrons can open by creating solvated electrons, which can be viewed as the longer-lived and mobile version of hot electrons more useful for chemical processes, and the challenges in practical utilization of energetic hot electrons are also discussed.

Piezomagnetic quantum dots

We study the influence of deformations on magnetic ordering in quantum dots doped with magnetic impurities. The reduction of symmetry and the associated deformation from circular to elliptical quantum confinement lead to the formation of piezomagnetic quantum dots. The strength of elliptical deformation can be controlled by the gate voltage to change the magnitude of magnetization, at a fixed number of carriers and in the absence of an applied magnetic field. We reveal a reentrant magnetic ordering with the increase of elliptical deformation and suggest that the piezomagnetic quantum dots can be used as nanoscale magnetic switches.

Crossover from Kondo-assisted suppression to co-tunneling enhancement of tunneling magnetoresistance via ferromagnetic nanodots in MgO tunnel barriers

The dependence of the tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) of planar magnetic tunnel junctions on the size of magnetic nanodots incorporated within MgO tunnel barriers is explored. At low temperatures, in the Coulomb blockade (CB) regime, for smaller nanodots the conductance of the junction is increased at low bias consistent with Kondo-assisted tunneling and the TMR is suppressed. For slightly larger nanodots but within the CB regime, the TMR is enhanced at low bias, consistent with co-tunneling. Magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJ) exhibit giant magnetoresistance in small magnetic fields that arises from the flow of spin-polarized current through an ultrathin tunnel barrier separating two magnetic electrodes. The current through an MTJ device depends on the magnetic orientation of the electrodes and is typically higher when the electrode moments are parallel than when they are antiparallel. It has recently been demonstrated that the spin polarization of the tunneling current can be greatly enhanced by using crystalline tunnel barriers formed from MgO as compared with conventional amorphous barriers formed from alumina, due to spin filtering across the MgO layer. The magneto-transport properties of magnetic granular alloys and magnetic tunnel junction devices with magnetic nanodots embedded in amorphous dielectric matrices, and tunnel barriers, respectively, have been studied by several groups, but no systematic studies of the dependence on these properties on the nanodot size have been made.

Magnetism in graphene nanoislands

We study the magnetic properties of nanometer-sized graphene structures with triangular and hexagonal shapes terminated by zigzag edges. We discuss how the shape of the island, the imbalance in the number of atoms belonging to the two graphene sublattices, the existence of zero-energy states, and the total and local magnetic moment are intimately related. We consider electronic interactions both in a mean-field approximation of the one-orbital Hubbard model and with density functional calculations. Both descriptions yield values for the ground state total spin S consistent with Lieb's theorem for bipartite lattices. Triangles have a finite S for all sizes whereas hexagons have S=0 and develop local moments above a critical size of approximately 1.5 nm.

Tailoring magnetism in quantum dots

We study magnetism in magnetically doped quantum dots as a function of the confining potential, particle numbers, temperature, and strength of the Coulomb interactions. We explore the possibility of tailoring magnetism by controlling the nonparabolicity of the confinement potential and the electron-electron Coulomb interaction, without changing the number of particles. The interplay of strong Coulomb interactions and quantum confinement leads to enhanced inhomogeneous magnetization which persists at higher temperatures than in the noninteracting case. The temperature of the onset of magnetization can be controlled by changing the number of particles as well as by modifying the quantum confinement and the strength of the Coulomb interactions. We predict a series of electronic spin transitions which arise from the competition between the many-body gap and magnetic thermal fluctuations.

Single-electron transport in electrically tunable nanomagnets

We study a single-electron transistor (SET) based upon a II-VI semiconductor quantum dot doped with a single-Mn ion. We present evidence that this system behaves like a quantum nanomagnet whose total spin and magnetic anisotropy depend dramatically both on the number of carriers and their orbital nature. Thereby, the magnetic properties of the nanomagnet can be controlled electrically. Conversely, the electrical properties of this SET depend on the quantum state of the Mn spin, giving rise to spin-dependent charging energies and hysteresis in the Coulomb blockade oscillations of the linear conductance.
