The case for pre-parturient selenium and iodine supplementation of ewes for improving lamb survival

Lamb survival is an issue of high relevance to the Australian sheep industry, as lamb-survival rates have direct bearing on overall reproductive performance of the sheep, and also constitute a main concern from an animal welfare perspective (Mellor and Stafford 2004). Both genetic and management factors play an important role in this complex issue (Hinch and Brien 2014). Ewe nutrition is of particular relevance as the intrauterine growth conditions prepare the lamb for the crucial transition to life outside the uterus. Effects of body condition of the ewe during various stages of the pregnancy have been investigated in detail, yet much less is known about the critical role of micronutrient provision to the ewe. Although several risk factors for selenium (Se) and iodine (I) subclinical deficiencies exist for sheep on pasture in Australia, determining micronutrient status in sheep or pasture is not straightforward. Several studies have separately found effects of Se and I supplementation on lamb survival. Studies investigating the interaction of Se and I supplementation have been few but results have demonstrated an interaction between Se and I. With increased twinning rates as a result of increased selection of numbers of lambs weaned, nutritional demands during pregnancy across flocks are increasing, and effects of micronutrients on lamb health and survival have greater impact. New opportunities in nutritional research are encouraging new studies into the effects of Se and I supplementation on lamb survival.

A herd health approach to dairy cow nutrition and production diseases of the transition cow

This paper presents a practical, on-farm approach for the monitoring and prevention of production disease in dairy cattle. This integrated approach, should be used in an interdisciplinary way by farmers, veterinarians, nutrition advisors and other relevant professionals for the improvement of animal health and welfare and producer profitability. The key areas that form the basis for this approach are body condition score management, negative energy balance, hypocalcaemia, rumen health and trace element status. Monitoring criteria are described for each of these key areas, which when considered collectively, will facilitate the assessment of dairy cow health with regard to clinical and subclinical disease. The criteria, which are informed by published scientific literature, are based on farm management and environmental factors, clinical data, milk production records, dietary analysis, and assessment of blood and liver concentrations of various metabolites or trace elements. The aim is to review the efficacy of production disease control measures currently in place, and if necessary to modify them or formulate new ones.

Epidemiology and diagnosis of subclinical iodine deficiency in crossbred cattle of Punjab

OBJECTIVE

To determine the prevalence of iodine deficiency in crossbred cows (taurus x indicus) of Punjab and to assess the diagnostic value of the plasma concentrations of thyroid hormones, total cholesterol and free fatty acids in iodine deficiency. The efficacy of ethiodised oil, as a long-term supplement of iodine, was also evaluated.

PROCEDURES

Base-line survey of iodine status was conducted by measuring plasma inorganic iodine (PII) concentration in 48 crossbred cows from 31 dairy units. Concentrations of plasma triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), total cholesterol and free fatty acids were compared between iodine deficient and normal cows. Circulating T4 and T3 concentrations were also determined before and after injection of ethiodised oil in cows with low PII levels.

RESULTS

The mean prevalence of iodine deficiency was 35.9% and showed considerable geographical variation from 0 to 86% within Punjab. Cardinal clinical signs of iodine deficiency were absent and basal plasma T3 and T4 concentrations and their ratio did not differ between deficient and control cows. Activity of circulating T4 and T4:T3 ratio increased in response to ethiodised oil injection and persisted beyond 70 days after injection.

CONCLUSION

Asymptomatic iodine deficiency is prevalent in crossbred cows of Punjab and response to iodine supplementation is the most reliable index of thyroid dysfunction associated with iodine deprivation. The results of this study also support the view that injection of 1 mL of 78% ethiodised oil can prevent iodine deficiency for more than 70 days.

Recent information on iodine deficiency in New Zealand sheep flocks

AIMS

To determine the value of pasture iodine, serum thyroxine (T4) and tri-iodothyronine (T3) concentrations and thyroid (g) to body weight (kg) ratios in lambs as criteria to predict and diagnose increased litter size and decreased perinatal mortality in response to iodine supplementation.

METHODS

Results from ten iodine response trials in ewes using an oil-based intramuscular iodine preparation were reviewed along with results from investigations into goitre on five farms in the Manawatu.

RESULTS

In two trials, litter size was increased by 14% and 21% in iodine-treated ewes. In only three of the 10 trials was there a significant reduction in perinatal mortality in iodine-treated ewes.

CONCLUSIONS

Pasture iodine and serum thyroxine (T4) and tri-iodothyronine (T3) concentrations appeared to be unhelpful in predicting the occurrence of increased litter size and reduced perinatal mortality in response to iodine supplementation. New-born lambs from ewes not supplemented with iodine, that had a mean thyroid weight (g) to body weight (kg) ratio of 0.40 g/kg or greater, generally had a significant increase in perinatal mortality compared to lambs from iodine-supplemented ewes.
