Side effects of COVID-19 vaccines in the middle eastern population

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused severe worldwide health concerns since its first description as the SARS-COV-2 virus in December 2019. The wide dissemination of this virus, together with the lack of treatment, prompted vaccine development within a short period of time to elicit a protective immunity against COVID-19. Due to their rapid development, potential subsequent side effects of COVID-19 vaccines were overlooked, which might lead to many health concerns. This is especially true for patients at a greater risk of harm from COVID-19, such as pregnant women, children, and patients with pre-existing chronic diseases. In this review, we provide a summary of common to rare side effects of administrated COVID-19 vaccines in a Middle Eastern population. We have found that the distinction between side effects from COVID-19 vaccines in terms of frequency and severity is attributed to the differences in study populations, gender, and age. Pain at the injection site, fever, headache, fatigue, and muscle pain were the most common reported side effects. Vaccinated subjects with previous COVID-19 infection exhibited an equivalent neutralizing response after just one dose compared to two doses of vaccine. Consequently, individuals who experienced more side effects had significantly higher antibody levels. This indicates that having better immunity correlates with higher antibody levels, leading to a higher frequency of vaccine side effects. Individuals with underlying comorbidities, particularly having known allergies and with illnesses such as diabetes and cancer, might be more prone to post-vaccination side effects. Studies of a high-risk population in Middle Eastern countries are limited. Future studies should be considered to determine long-term side effects, side effects after booster doses, and side effect differences in cases of heterologous and homologous vaccination for better understanding and proper handling of high-risk populations and patients who experience these side effects.

Adverse cutaneous reactions reported post COVID-19 vaccination in AL Buraimi Governorate, Sultanate of Oman

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the novel coronavirus (COVID‐19) a global pandemic. This has led to the rapid development and emergency approval of vaccines to overcome the alarming spread of the virus. Data on the cutaneous side effects related to the COVID‐19 vaccine remains limited. In this prospective observational study, which was conducted from June 20 to September 20, 2021, we evaluated the incidence and various patterns of cutaneous side effects reported post COVID‐19 vaccination in Al Buraimi Governorate in Oman. All vaccinated individuals aged 12 years and older, who had a skin reaction within 4 weeks following any dose of the COVID‐19 vaccine, were enrolled in the study. The demographic data, medical history, vaccine‐related information of all the patients were documented and the analysis was performed using the SPSS version 23 software. In total, 67 cutaneous reactions were reported by 55 patients accounting for 0.11% of all vaccinated individuals. The mean age of the patients was 33.3 years, 80.6% were females, 61.2% of the reactions were reported after the first vaccine dose, and 38.8% were reported after the second dose. We observed a wide range of cutaneous reactions and categorized them into three major patterns: local injection site reaction (2%), new onset rash (81.6%), and flare up of pre‐existing dermatological conditions (16.4%). Notably, urticaria was the most common reaction overall, followed by generalized pruritus and maculopapular rash. In general, we reported a diversity of cutaneous side effects that healthcare workers should be aware of as some reactions may be overlooked and not linked to the COVID‐19 vaccination.

Eruptive Angiomatosis Triggered by COVID-19 Vaccination

Despite meeting strict standards of quality, safety, and effectiveness, rare systemic and cutaneous side effects of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccinations continue to be reported throughout the world. We report a case of eruptive cherry angiomatosis in a female following her first dose of COVID-19 vaccination with subsequent crops appearing after the second dose. The biopsy revealed dilated capillaries within the superficial dermis consistent with the clinical diagnosis.
