Abstract
INTRODUCTION Motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR), characterized by subjective cognitive complaints and slow gait in older populations, is associated with sleep duration. However, the association between MCR and daytime nap duration has not been thoroughly explored. METHODS Baseline data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) were used in this study. MCR was defined as the coexistence of subjective cognitive complaints and objective slow gait speed without a history of dementia or mobility disability. Daytime nap duration was categorized into four groups: no napping, short napping (<30 min), moderate napping (30-89 min) and extended napping (≥90 min). Multivariable logistic regression models were used to explore the association of daytime napping duration and MCR. RESULTS A total of 4230 individuals aged ≥60 were included in the current analysis, of which 463 were diagnosed with MCR. Moderate napping of 30-89 min per day was found to be significantly associated with lower odds of MCR compared with the reference group of no napping. In subgroup analysis, individuals with sleep durations of <7 h per night had lower odds of MCR in the model that adjusted for all potential confounders with ≥30 min daytime nap duration compared with no napping. Interestingly, for people with a night sleep duration of 7-8 h, only those with a moderate nap of 30-89 min had lower odds of MCR than non-nappers after adjustment for potential confounders. CONCLUSION A moderate nap of 30-89 min could lower the odds of MCR, especially for older adults with a night sleep duration of ≤8 h.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We investigated the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and the coexistence of insomnia and daytime napping, because limited data have been reported regarding this association. METHODS The study population was 8,440 participants aged 40-65 years, who were from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study. Self-reported information on insomnia symptoms and nap duration was used to define exposure variables. Data on waist circumference (WC), blood pressure (BP), and fasting blood glucose (FBG), triglyceride (TG), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in blood were used to define MetS. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to obtain odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS In multivariate logistic regression analysis, the coexistence of insomnia and napping was not significantly associated with MetS. However, the insomnia and non-napping group showed higher ORs of high TG (OR, 1.19; 95% CI, 1.02 to 1.39) and high BP (OR, 1.28; 95% CI, 1.10 to 1.49) than the non-insomnia and non-napping group. The combination of non-insomnia and napping and that of insomnia and napping showed higher ORs of high TG (OR, 1.13; 95% CI, 1.00 to 1.29) and high FBG (OR, 1.59; 95% CI, 1.14 to 2.21), respectively. In analyses of insomnia symptoms, only the combination of difficulty in maintaining sleep (DMS) and non-napping showed a higher OR for MetS (OR, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.03 to 1.52) than the non-DMS and non-napping group. CONCLUSIONS Individuals with insomnia, particularly those who do not take naps, were disproportionately likely to have MetS components, especially TG or BP. Information on these variables may help predict individuals' vulnerability to specific MetS components.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Emerging evidence has linked daytime napping with the risk of cardiovascular events. Cardiac arrhythmias are considered an early clinical stage for cardiovascular diseases. However, whether napping frequency is associated with incident arrhythmias remains unknown. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to prospectively investigate the association between napping frequency and cardiac arrhythmias. METHODS Daytime napping frequency was self-reported in response to touchscreen questionnaires. The primary outcomes were incident arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation/flutter (AF/Af), ventricular arrhythmia, and bradyarrhythmia. Cox regression analysis was conducted on the basis of 491,117 participants free of cardiac arrhythmias from the UK Biobank. The 2-sample mendelian randomization (MR) and 1-sample MR were used to ensure a causal effect of genetically predicted daytime napping on the risk of arrhythmias. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 11.91 years, 28,801 incident AF/Af cases, 4132 incident ventricular arrhythmias, and 11,616 incident bradyarrhythmias were documented. Compared with never/rarely napping, usually napping was significantly associated with higher risks of AF/Af (hazard ratio, 1.141; 95% CI, 1.083-1.203) and bradyarrhythmia (hazard ratio, 1.138; 95% CI, 1.049-1.235) but not ventricular arrhythmia after adjustment for various covariates. The 2-sample MR and 1-sample MR analysis showed that increased daytime napping frequency was likely to be a potential causal risk factor for AF/Af in FinnGen (odds ratio, 1.626; 95% CI, 1.061-2.943) and bradyarrhythmia in the UK Biobank (odds ratio, 1.005; 95% CI, 1.002-1.008). CONCLUSION The results of this study add to the burgeoning evidence of an association between daytime napping frequency and an increased risk of cardiac arrhythmias including AF/Af, ventricular arrhythmia, and bradyarrhythmia.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To date, many studies have shown a link between siesta and cardiovascular events. Little is known regarding the connection between siesta and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) levels, even though baPWV can determine the degree of atherosclerosis and vascular stiffness. Thus, we examined the relationship between siesta time and baPWV in a cross-sectional study. METHODS Interviews, physical examinations, lab testing, and electron beam computed tomography were all part of the baseline evaluation for participants aged older than 35. Baseline data were compared for 3 different siesta habits: irregular or no siestas, daily short siestas (1 h or less), and daily long siestas (> 1 h). Utilizing logistic regression models and multivariate linear regression, the link between siesta time and baPWV was determined. RESULTS Among all 6566 participants, the different siesta groups had a significant difference of the degrees of AS (P < 0.001). The same outcome was true for both males (P < 0.001) and females (P < 0.001). Numerous cardiovascular risk variables and markers of subclinical atherosclerosis were positively correlated with daily extended siestas. Results from the fully adjusted model showed that long siestas (> 60 min, OR = 1.18, 95%CI: 1.06-1.31, P = 0.002) were linked to a more severe level of the baPWV. For age or gender stratification, we found significant differences between non-siesta and > 60 min siesta groups. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed a positive connection between siesta duration and baPWV (β = 0.197, P = 0.038). CONCLUSIONS An elevated risk of atherosclerosis was shown to accompany prolonged siestas. These results need to be followed up on with prospective studies and additional lab work.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine whether longitudinal trajectories of nighttime sleep duration and daytime napping duration are related to subsequent multimorbidity risk. To explore whether daytime napping can compensate for negative effects of short nighttime sleep. METHODS The current study included 5262 participants from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Self-reported nighttime sleep duration and daytime napping duration were collected from 2011 to 2015. The 4-year sleep duration trajectories were conducted by group-based trajectory modeling. The 14 medical conditions were defined by self-reported physician diagnoses. Multimorbidity was diagnosed as participants with 2 or more of the 14 chronic diseases after 2015. Associations between sleep trajectories and multimorbidity were assessed by Cox regression models. RESULTS During 6.69 years of follow-up, we observed multimorbidity in 785 participants. Three nighttime sleep duration trajectories and three daytime napping duration trajectories were identified. Participants with persistent short nighttime sleep duration trajectory had the higher risk of multimorbidity (hazard ratio = 1.37, 95% confidence interval: 1.06-1.77), compared with those with persistent recommended nighttime sleep duration trajectory. Participants with persistent short nighttime sleep duration and persistent seldom daytime napping duration had the highest risk of multimorbidity (hazard ratio = 1.69, 95% confidence interval: 1.16-2.46). CONCLUSIONS In this study, persistent short nighttime sleep duration trajectory was associated with subsequent multimorbidity risk. Daytime napping could compensate for the risk of insufficient night sleep.

Abstract
Introduction Night sleep duration and total sleep duration are associated with frailty. However, the association between daytime nap duration and the risks of frailty has not been explored thoroughly. Methods This study used data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Participants aged 60 years and older at baseline were included in this study. Individuals with daytime nap duration were categorized into four groups: no napping, short napping (< 30 min), moderate napping (30-89 min), and extended napping (≥90 min). Frailty was assessed using a modified Physical Frailty Phenotype (PFP) scale. Non-frail participants at baseline were followed up for 4 years. The association between nap duration and risks of frailty at baseline and incident frailty was evaluated by logistic regression and discrete-time Cox regression analyses, respectively. Results In total, 5,126 participants were included in this study. For individuals with night sleep duration of ≥9 h, short nappers showed higher odds [odds ratio (OR) = 4.08, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.30-12.78] for frailty compared with non-habitual nappers at baseline, while moderate nappers were less likely to be frail (OR = 0.18, 95% CI: 0.04-0.73). In the follow-up study, short nappers showed higher risks for frailty compared with participants of the no napping group with night sleep duration of < 6 h [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.91, 95% CI: 1.07-3.43] or 6-9 h (HR = 1.97, 95% CI: 1.18-3.30). Compared with short nappers, older adults with extended napping (HR = 0.41, 95% CI: 0.22-0.77) showed lower risks for frailty in those with night sleep duration of 6-9 h. For individuals with night sleep duration of ≥9 h, moderate napping (HR = 0.20, 95% CI: 0.05-0.77) decreased the risks for frailty compared with short napping. Conclusion Among older adults with night sleep duration of < 9 h, short nappers posed higher risks for frailty compared with non-habitual nappers. Extended naps for those with a night sleep duration of 6-9 h or moderate naps for those with night sleep duration of ≥9 h could lower the risk of frailty compared with short naps. Future studies on the timing, purpose, frequency, and quality of daytime napping and objectively measured nap duration are needed to explore the association between daytime napping and risks of frailty.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Previous observational studies have found conflicting evidence on the relationship between daytime napping and incident cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), but it remains unclear whether these associations present causality. This study aims to verify whether and why there is a causal relationship between these parameters, and whether there is an etiological basis. METHODS A two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis was performed using 79 single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with daytime napping. Summary-level data for coronary atherosclerosis, peripheral atherosclerosis, total CVD, and five CVD outcomes were obtained from the FinnGen study. Meta-analyses were aimed at investigating the relationships of excessive daytime napping with total CVD, coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction (MI), and stroke incidence. Subgroup, network meta-analysis (NMA) and trial sequential analysis (TSA) were also performed in this study. RESULTS The inverse-variance weighted method demonstrated that a genetic predisposition to more frequent daytime napping was significantly associated with higher odds of coronary atherosclerosis (odds ratio [OR] = 1.55, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.11 to 2.17), MI (OR = 1.63, 95% CI: 1.06 to 2.50), and heart failure (OR = 1.80, 95%CI: 1.28 to 2.52). In NMA, an increased risk of developing CVD in people who napped for more than 60 min a day than those who did not nap was demonstrated and then supported by TSA results (summary relative risk = 1.98, 95% CI: 1.39 to 2.82). CONCLUSION Habitual daytime napping is causally associated with an increased risk of incident CVD primarily via the development of coronary atherosclerosis. An average napping duration of more than 60 min is associated with an elevated risk of CVD in all participants.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Daytime napping is frequently seen in older adults. The longitudinal relationship between daytime napping and cognitive aging is unknown. METHODS Using data from 1401 participants of the Rush Memory and Aging Project, we examined the longitudinal change of daytime napping inferred objectively by actigraphy, and the association with incident Alzheimer's dementia during up to 14-year follow-up. RESULTS Older adults tended to nap longer and more frequently with aging, while the progression of Alzheimer's dementia accelerates this change by more than doubling the annual increases in nap duration/frequency. Longer and more frequent daytime naps were associated with higher risk of Alzheimer's dementia. Interestingly, more excessive (longer or more frequent) daytime napping was correlated with worse cognition a year later, and conversely, worse cognition was correlated with more excessive naps a year later. DISCUSSION Excessive daytime napping and Alzheimer's dementia may possess a bidirectional relationship or share common pathophysiological mechanisms.

Abstract
Background The relationship between daytime napping and depression remains debatable. Thus, a meta-analysis in this study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between daytime napping and depression. Methods The PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases were searched up to February 2022, and the reference lists of the included studies were also retrieved. A random-effects model was used to estimate the combined effect size. Results Nine studies with 649,111 participants were included in the final analysis. The pooled odds ratio (OR) was 1.15 (95% confidence interval: 1.01-1.31) with a significant heterogeneity (I 2 = 91.3%, P for heterogeneity <0.001), and the results demonstrated an increased risk of depressive symptoms among daytime nappers. Visual inspection of the funnel plot and Egger's and Begg's tests identified no obvious evidence of publication bias. Conclusion This meta-analysis indicates that daytime naps are a predictor of depression. The effects of daytime napping on depression may vary depending on the characteristics of people, the pattern of naps, and the individual's sleep experience. The findings may have significant implications for future research on depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The aim of this study was to investigate the association between daytime napping frequency and the incidence of essential hypertension or stroke as well as to validate causality in this relationship via Mendelian randomization (MR). METHODS We conducted Cox regression analysis on 358 451 participants free of hypertension or stroke from UK Biobank. To validate the results of the observational analysis, we conducted a 2-sample MR for daytime napping frequency (123 single-nucleotide polymorphisms) with essential hypertension in FinnGen Biobank, stroke, and ischemic stroke in MEGASTROKE consortium and performed a corresponding 1-sample MR on the UK Biobank data. RESULTS Compared with never napping, usually napping was associated with a higher risk of essential hypertension (hazard ratio, 1.12 [95% CI, 1.08-1.17]), stroke (hazard ratio, 1.24 [95% CI, 1.10-1.39], and ischemic stroke (hazard ratio, 1.20 [95% CI, 1.05-1.36]) in our prospective observational analysis. Both the 1-sample and 2-sample MR results indicated that increased daytime napping frequency was likely to be a potential causal risk factor for essential hypertension in FinnGEN (odds ratio, 1.43 [95% CI, 1.06-1.92]) and UK Biobank (odds ratio, 1.40 [95% CI, 1.28-1.58]). The 2-sample MR results supported the potential causal effect of nap frequency on ischemic stroke in MEGASTROKE (odds ratio, 1.29 [95% CI, 1.04-1.62]). CONCLUSIONS Prospective observational and MR analyses provided evidence that increased daytime nap frequency may represent a potential causal risk factor for essential hypertension. The potential causal association of increased nap frequency with ischemic stroke was supported by 2-sample MR and prospective observational results.

Abstract
Associations between night sleep duration and cardiovascular risk factors in adults have been well documented. However, the associations for daytime napping remain unclear. In this review, six databases were searched for eligible publications to April 8, 2022. A total of 11 articles were identified for umbrella review on the association of daytime napping with diabetes, metabolic syndrome (MetS), cardiovascular disease (CVD), and mortality in adults, 97 for systematic review on the association with CVD and several CVD risk factors. Our umbrella review showed that the associations of daytime napping with diabetes, MetS, CVD, and mortality in most meta-analyses were mainly supported by weak or suggestive evidence. Our systematic review showed that long daytime napping (≥1 h/d) was associated with higher odds of several CVD risk factors, CVD, and mortality, but no significant association was found between short daytime napping and most of the abovementioned outcomes. Our dose-response meta-analyses showed that daytime napping <30 min/d was not significantly associated with higher odds of most CVD risk factors and CVD among young and middle-aged adults. However, among older adults aged >60 years, we observed significant dose-response associations of daytime napping with higher odds of diabetes, dyslipidemia, MetS, and mortality starting from 0 min/d.

Abstract
Background Although sleep disorders have been linked to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), the association between sleep characteristics and CVDs remains inconclusive. We aimed to examine the association of nighttime sleep duration, daytime napping, and sleep patterns with CVDs and explore whether genetic and early‐life environmental factors account for this association. Methods and Results In the Swedish Twin Registry, 12 268 CVD‐free twin individuals (mean age=70.3 years) at baseline were followed up to 18 years to detect incident CVDs. Sleep duration, napping, and sleep patterns (assessed by sleep duration, chronotype, insomnia, snoring, and daytime sleepiness) were self‐reported at baseline. CVDs were ascertained through the Swedish National Patient Registry and the Cause of Death Register. Data were analyzed using a Cox model. In the multiadjusted Cox model, compared with 7 to 9 hours/night, the hazard ratios (HRs) of CVDs were 1.14 (95% CI, 1.01–1.28) for <7 hours/night and 1.10 (95% CI, 1.00–1.21) for ≥10 hours/night, respectively. Compared with no napping, napping 1 to 30 minutes (HR, 1.11 [95% CI, 1.03–1.18]) and >30 minutes (HR, 1.23 [95% CI, 1.14–1.33]) were related to CVDs. Furthermore, a poor sleep pattern was associated with CVDs (HR, 1.22 [95% CI, 1.05–1.41]). The co‐twin matched control analyses showed similar results as the unmatched analyses, and there was no significant interaction between sleep characteristics and zygosity (P values >0.05). Conclusions Short or long sleep (<7 or ≥10 hours/night), napping, and poor sleep patterns are associated with an increased CVD risk. Genetic and early‐life environmental factors may not account for the sleep–CVD association.

Abstract
Background Although ample evidence has demonstrated that daytime napping is beneficial for health and cognitive performance, bedding for napping has not yet been scientifically investigated. Objectives To explore the effect of a bean bag chair on daytime napping and physiological parameters related to sleep. Methods Fourteen healthy participants were enrolled within the context of a randomized, single-blind, crossover study to evaluate the effects of a bean bag chair in comparison with those of a urethane chair manufactured to have a similar shape. Electroencephalogram, electromyogram, and heart rate variability were recorded and compared between wakefulness and napping. Results Electroencephalogram analyses revealed no significant differences in sleep architecture or frequency components; however, a significant decrease was found in electromyogram recordings in the trapezius muscle, which represents the neck region (p = 0.019). Additionally, a significant main effect of bedding in the low-frequency/high-frequency ratio (F[1,20] = 4.314, p = 0.037) was revealed. Conclusions These results suggest that napping in a bean bag chair may provide a comfortable napping environment involving muscle relaxation and proper regulation of the autonomic nervous function.

Abstract
Study Objectives Sleep is a modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular conditions. Holistic examination of within-person, multidimensional sleep patterns may offer more detailed information about the sleep-cardiovascular condition link, including who is more vulnerable to both. This study aimed to identify common sleep phenotypes in adulthood, establish the validity of the phenotypes in relation to cardiovascular conditions, and explore sociodemographic and background characteristics of the phenotypes. Methods Across two independent samples of adults (N 1 = 4600; N 2 = 2598) from the Midlife in the United States Study, latent class analysis (LCA) extracted sleep phenotypes using five key self-reported sleep dimensions. Log-binomial regression was used to determine whether sleep phenotypes differentially predicted cardiovascular conditions, adjusting for known risk factors. LCA with covariates was used to compare sociodemographic characteristics of the identified sleep phenotypes. Results Four sleep phenotypes were identified consistently across the two samples: good sleepers, nappers, dissatisfied/inefficient sleepers, and irregular sleepers. Compared to good sleepers (reference), dissatisfied/inefficient sleepers exhibited a higher risk of cardiovascular conditions in both samples (RR Sample1: 29%, RR Sample2: 53%) and consisted of relatively more racial/ethnic minorities. Nappers exhibited a higher risk of cardiovascular conditions in one sample (RR Sample1: 38%) and consisted of more women and older adults. Irregular sleepers exhibited no significantly different cardiovascular risk and were relatively younger. Conclusions Common sleep phenotypes in adulthood exhibit differential risks for cardiovascular conditions. Cooccurring sleep dissatisfaction and inefficiency, in particular, may relate to increased risk of cardiovascular conditions. Certain sociodemographic groups (racial minorities, women, older adults) disproportionately fit within high-risk sleep phenotypes.

Abstract
We examined whether subjectively and objectively measured sleep health composites have a relationship with heart disease. 6,820 adults (Mage = 53.4 years) from the Midlife in the United States study provided self-reported sleep characteristics and heart disease history. A smaller sample (n = 663) provided actigraphy sleep data. We tested two sleep health composites, based on self-report only and both self-report and actigraphy, across multiple sleep dimensions. We used a weighted sum approach, where higher scores indicated more sleep health problems. Modified Poisson regressions adjusted for sociodemographics and known risk factors. Having more sleep health problems was associated with a higher risk of heart disease using the self-report sleep health composite (aRR = 54%, P < .001) and the actigraphy/self-report composite (aRR = 141%, P < .001). Individual sleep dimensions of satisfaction, alertness, and efficiency (from the self-report composite) and regularity, satisfaction, and timing (from the actigraphy/self-report composite) were associated with the risk of heart disease. The effect size of each sleep health composite was larger than the individual sleep dimensions. Race moderated the association between the actigraphy/self-report sleep health composite and heart disease. There was no significant moderation by sex. Findings suggest poorer sleep health across multiple dimensions may contribute to heart disease risk among middle-aged adults.

Abstract
Background: Siesta has been associated with increased incidence of cardiovascular disease but the mechanism remains unclear. New studies into the relationship between siesta and metabolic syndrome have identified siesta length as a crucial differential, suggesting that siesta less than 40 min is associated with decreased risk of metabolic syndrome, while longer siesta is associated with increased risk. We aimed to investigate the effect of siesta duration on development of metabolic syndrome in a Mediterranean population using a prospective cohort study design. Methods: Our sample consisted of 9161 participants of the SUN cohort without components of metabolic syndrome at baseline. Siesta exposure was assessed at baseline and the development of metabolic syndrome components was assessed after an average 6.8 years of follow-up. We estimated odds ratios and fitted logistic regression models to adjust for potential cofounders including night-time sleep duration and quality, as well as other diet, health, and lifestyle factors. Results: We observed a positive association between average daily siesta >30 min and development of metabolic syndrome (aOR = 1.39 CI: 1.03–1.88). We found no significant difference in risk of developing metabolic syndrome between the group averaging ≤30 min of daily siesta and the group not taking siesta (aOR = 1.07 CI: 0.83–1.37). Further analysis suggested that average daily siesta <15 min may reduce risk of metabolic syndrome. Conclusions: Our study supports the J-curve model of the association between siesta and risk of metabolic syndrome, but suggests the protective effect is limited to a shorter range of siesta length than previously proposed.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES To investigate the association between daytime napping and retinal microcirculation. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study from a prospective population-based cohort. 2,662 participants were recruited after quota sampling. Information on napping was collected through face-to-face interviews. Retinal vascular calibers (RVCs), including central retinal arteriolar equivalent (CRAE), central retinal venular equivalent (CRVE), and arterio-to-venous ratio (AVR), were obtained from fundus photography. Multivariate regression and restricted cubic spline curve were performed to determine the association between RVCs and daytime napping duration. RESULTS 56.4% participants reported daytime napping regularly. Compared to no nap, daytime nap was related to higher CRAE, with nap duration of 0.5-1 h showing the most significant association. 0.5-1 h daytime nappers displayed an average of 4.18 µm (95% confidence interval [CI] 2.45-5.91, p < 0.001) wider CRAE than non-nappers after adjustment. No significant association was found between CRVE and daytime napping. Moreover, individuals with 0.5-1 h daytime napping had a lower risk for AVR reduction (odds ratio [OR] 0.70, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.56-0.86, p = 0.001) than non-nappers. Similar association persisted in non-hypertensive population. Restricted cubic spline indicated a J-shaped relationship between AVR reduction and nap duration. CONCLUSION Retinal microcirculation was positively associated with self-reported 0.5-1 h daytime napping. Better indicators of retinal microcirculation were probably related to nap duration in a J-shaped manner. Also, the possibly beneficial role of 0.5-1 h daytime napping on retinal microcirculation might be independent of clinically diagnosed vascular diseases.

Abstract
Modern societies are experiencing an increasing trend of reduced sleep duration, with nocturnal sleeping time below the recommended ranges for health. Epidemiological and laboratory studies have demonstrated detrimental effects of sleep deprivation on health. Sleep exerts an immune-supportive function, promoting host defense against infection and inflammatory insults. Sleep deprivation has been associated with alterations of innate and adaptive immune parameters, leading to a chronic inflammatory state and an increased risk for infectious/inflammatory pathologies, including cardiometabolic, neoplastic, autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases. Here, we review recent advancements on the immune responses to sleep deprivation as evidenced by experimental and epidemiological studies, the pathophysiology, and the role for the sleep deprivation-induced immune changes in increasing the risk for chronic diseases. Gaps in knowledge and methodological pitfalls still remain. Further understanding of the causal relationship between sleep deprivation and immune deregulation would help to identify individuals at risk for disease and to prevent adverse health outcomes.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to assess the association between nighttime sleep, daytime napping, and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in an elderly Chinese population. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the 2011 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) to examine the association between nighttime sleep, daytime napping, and MetS (defined according to the Chinese Diabetes Society criteria). Sleep duration was assessed by a self-reported questionnaire. Binary logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of the associations adjusting for covariates. RESULTS Among 4785 elderly Chinese aged over 65 years old, there was no association between short-time sleep duration (< 7 h/day) and MetS. However, long-time sleep duration (> 8 h/day) decreased the odds of MetS by 53% (aOR= 0.47; 95% CI 0.23-0.96) compared to normal sleep duration (7-8 h/day). Compared to no daytime napping, short-time napping (≤ 30 min/day) was associated with increased odds of MetS (aOR = 1.55, 95% CI 1.02-2.36) and long-time napping (> 30 min/day) was associated with even higher odds of MetS (aOR = 1.77, 95%CI 1.24-2.53). Individuals who were over 75 years old, with elementary school education, and good health status had lower odds of MetS, while women, individuals living in rural areas, and those who reported poor health status had higher odds of MetS. CONCLUSION Long-time sleep duration decreased and daytime napping increased the risk of MetS among the elderly Chinese population. We speculate that increasing nighttime sleep duration and decreasing daytime napping may help reduce the risk of MetS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep problems are common among nurses compared with the general population. Poor sleep quality increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). The relationship between sleep quality and CVD risk has not been previously investigated among Hong Kong female nurses. OBJECTIVE The authors of this study explored the association between sleep quality and CVD risk among Hong Kong female nurses. METHODS Data were collected from the Hong Kong Women's Health Study cross-sectional survey between 2019 and 2020. Questionnaires were sent to female nurses (≥aged 30 years). Ten-year CVD risk was measured using the Framingham 10-year risk score, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to evaluate sleep quality. Relationships were evaluated using adjusted multiple linear regression and binary logistic regression. RESULTS In 1344 respondents, the mean age was 46.12 ± 10.47 years, average PSQI score was 6.02 (3.35), and 52.4% reported poor sleeping quality (global PSQI score > 5). The mean 10-year CVD risk was 3.6% (3.3%). The 10-year CVD risk was significantly associated with sleep disturbance (β = 0.006) and daytime dysfunction (β = -0.002) (both Ps < .01). Participants who reported sleep disturbance had a higher CVD risk (odds ratio, 1.82; 95% confidence interval, 1.04-3.18). High daytime dysfunction decreased CVD risk (odds ratio, 0.63; 95% confidence interval, 0.46-0.85). Subgroup analysis showed stronger associations between sleep quality and Framingham 10-year risk score among those unemployed, undergoing postmenopause, or with a family history of CVDs. CONCLUSIONS Sleep disturbance and daytime dysfunction were associated with the 10-year CVD risk among Hong Kong female nurses. Nurses who were unemployed, were undergoing postmenopause, or with a family history of CVD were those with the highest risk.

Abstract
Background Disrupted nighttime sleep has been associated with heart failure (HF). However, the relationship between daytime napping, an important aspect of sleep behavior commonly seen in older adults, and HF remains unclear. We sought to investigate the association of objectively assessed daytime napping and risk of incident HF during follow‐up. Methods and Results We studied 1140 older adults (age, 80.7±7.4 [SD] years; female sex, 867 [76.1%]) in the Rush Memory and Aging Project who had no HF at baseline and were followed annually for up to 14 years. Motor activity (ie, actigraphy) was recorded for ≈10 days at baseline. We assessed daytime napping episodes between 9 am and 7 pm objectively from actigraphy using a previously published algorithm for sleep detection. Cox proportional hazards models examined associations of daily napping duration and frequency with incident HF. Eighty‐six participants developed incident HF, and the mean onset time was 5.7 years (SD, 3.4; range, 1–14). Participants who napped longer than 44.4 minutes (ie, the median daily napping duration) showed a 1.73‐fold higher risk of developing incident HF than participants who napped <44.4 minutes. Consistently, participants who napped >1.7 times/day (ie, the median daily napping frequency) showed a 2.20‐fold increase compared with participants who napped <1.7 times/day. These associations persisted after adjustment for covariates, including nighttime sleep, comorbidities, and cardiovascular disease/risk factors. Conclusions Longer and more frequent objective napping predicted elevated future risk of developing incident HF. Future studies are needed to establish underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
Background We aim to explore the association between self-reported snoring and hypertension among adults aged 30–79 in Chongqing, China. Methods A total of 23,342 individuals aged 30–79 were included at baseline from August 2018 to January 2019, and the final sample size for the analysis was 22,423. Face-to-face interviews and physical examinations were conducted by trained investigators. Logistic regression was performed to study age-specific and gender-specific associations between snoring and hypertension. Results Frequent snoring was associated with the risk of hypertension for each age and gender group, and the frequency of snoring was positively correlated with the risk for hypertension. For the three age groups (< 45, 45–59, ≥ 60), compared with the non-snoring group, those who snore often had a 64.5%, 53.3%, and 24.5% increased risk of hypertension (< 45: OR = 1.65, 95%CI 1.34–2.02; 45–59: OR = 1.53, 95%CI 1.37–1.72; ≥ 60: OR = 1.25, 95%CI 1.09–1.42), respectively. For men and women, those who snore often had a 46.8% and 97.2% increased risk of hypertension, respectively, than the non-snoring group (men: OR = 1.47, 95%CI 1.33–1.63; women: OR = 1.97, 95%CI 1.75–2.23). Conclusions People who snore frequently should pay close attention to their blood pressure levels in order to achieve early prevention of hypertension, particularly for snorers who are female and aged under 45; importance should be attached to their blood pressure control.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Changes in autonomic cardiac activity during night sleep are well documented. However, there is limited information regarding changes in the autonomic cardiac profile during daytime naps. Heart rate variability (HRV) and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) are reliable measures of autonomic cardiac activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the changes in HRV and BRS during daytime naps in healthy men. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study of 25 healthy men. Polysomnographic recording with electrocardiogram monitoring was conducted for all volunteers during a 50-80 min nap between 3.30 pm and 5.30 pm. Five-minute segments during pre-nap wakefulness, non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep stages (N1, N2, and N3), rapid eye movement (REM) sleep stage, and post-nap wakefulness were used to measure changes in the variation in HRV parameters, including inter-beat interval (RR-interval), total spectral power (TP), high-frequency power (HF), low-frequency power (LF), and low frequency/high-frequency ratio (LF/HF). BRS was also measured for 10 min during pre- and post-nap wakefulness using finger arterial pressure measurement (Finometer Pro ®). RESULTS HRV increased significantly during NREM sleep compared with that during pre-nap wakefulness (p < 0.05), as reflected by RR-interval prolongation, higher HF, and increased HFnu (normalized units). Furthermore, there was a parallel reduction in TP, LF, and LF/HF ratio during NREM sleep, indicating parasympathetic predominance over cardiac autonomic activity. HF and HFnu were significantly reduced during REM sleep compared with that during NREM sleep (p < 0.05). BRS did not show significant differences between pre- and post-nap wakefulness. CONCLUSION We observed a progressive increase in parasympathetic activity during daytime sleep as NREM sleep deepened compared with that during wakefulness and REM sleep. Daytime nap may have a favorable cardiovascular impact.

Abstract
During the past years, the prevalence of sleep problems has been increasing steadily in industrial societies and represents a major social and socioeconomic burden. The situation in Austria was last evaluated in 2007 by Zeitlhofer and colleagues in a representative sample of 1000 participants. In the current study, we sought to evaluate the sleep behaviour of the Austrian population in an ongoing online survey, in which we have collected data from 986 participants (66% women, mean age 40.9 ± 16.4 years) between March 2018 and May 2019. Sleep duration was appropriate in 52% of the respondents (i.e. 7–9 h per night). However, we found an alarmingly high number of self-reported sleep problems (46%), and only 31% of the participants classified themselves as “good sleepers” using a validated self-report questionnaire (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, PSQI). Furthermore, many participants reported suffering from sleep problems for a very long time (86% > 6 months; 37% > 5 years) suggesting that currently available treatment options are either ineffective or not employed. Possible reasons for sleep problems could include irregular sleep-wake cycles, increased perceived stress levels, and the use of electronic devices just before sleep.
