Phyto-enhanced remediation of soil co-contaminated with lead and diesel fuel using biowaste and Dracaena reflexa: A laboratory study

Monitoring and assessment of Dracaena-based constructed vertical flow wetlands treating textile dye wastewater

The monitoring and assessment of multiple constructed vertical flow wetlands (CVFWs) treating textile dye wastewater (metanil yellow as dye) are studied covering three seasons. Three CVFWs (CVFW-1, dye-5 mg/l; CVFW-2, dye-50 mg/l; and CVFW-3, dye-100 mg/l) and a control (dye-5 mg/l) were used. The CVFWs with Dracaena (an ornamental plant) efficiently removed contaminants like dye, COD, NH₄⁺-N, and PO₄^3--P from the wastewater under varying inlet dye concentrations, indicating its dependence on meteorological conditions. Substantial dye removal was observed to be maximum in summer (control, 44.3%; CVFW-1, 75.1%; CVFW-2, 76.1%; CVFW-3, 46%), but lesser in winter (control, 45%; CVFW-1, 73.1%; CVFW-2, 76.8%; CVFW-3, 42.6%) and minimum in monsoon (control, 40.8%; CVFW-1, 63.5%; CVFW-2, 51.6%; CVFW-3, 37.1%), respectively. Efficiency was less in CVFW-3 as it observed plant stress due to higher inlet dye concentration. COD removal was higher in winter, followed by summer and monsoon. A first-order kinetic model was used to investigate the efficiency of the CVFW system w.r.t. contaminant removal. Various functional groups were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) from the inlet and outlet water samples of different CVFWs. The Dracaena accumulated various elements and oxides during the treatment with no stress on its health. No effects on plant health highlight the suitability of Dracaena for textile wastewater treatment. The results were validated using statistical tools like the Mann-Whitney U test and principal component analysis (PCA).

Histological and proteome analyses of Microbacterium foliorum-mediated decrease in arsenic toxicity in Melastoma malabathricum

Arsenic (As) is an increasing threat across the globe, widely known as a non-threshold carcinogen, and it is reaching harmful values in several areas of the world. In this study, the effect of plant growth promoting bacteria (Microbacterium foliorum) on inorganic arsenic (Arsenate) phytoremediation by Melastoma malabathricum plants was investigated through histological analysis and proteome profiling of the M. malabathricum plants. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and transmission electron microscopy were used to conduct the proteome and histological analysis. When arsenic-treated cells were compared to untreated cells, substantial changes were found (1) severely altered the morphology of the cells, intensely disturbed; (2) the cell wall was thicker; (3) drastically changed the cytoplasm, the cells were polygonal in shape, different in size (scattered), and relatively dense. Compared to the control group, the ultra-structure of the root cells of the control group revealed intact cytoplasm, vacuole, and cell wall under exposure to As + bacteria that had a minor effect on the cell form. To further understand As + bacteria interaction, proteome profiling of the root cell was analyzed. The As-induced oxidative stress enrichment was confirmed by the up-regulation of tubulin, nucleoside diphosphate kinase, and major allergen during As + bacteria exposure It was observed that the profusion of proteins involved in defence, protein biogenesis, signaling, photosynthesis, nucleoside and energy metabolism was greater in As + bacteria as compared to the rooting out of As only. Overall, it can be obviously seen that the current study demonstrates the effectiveness of phytoremediation by M. foliorum on proteins involved and responsive pathways in dealing with As toxicity in M. malabathricum plant.

Dealing with complex contamination: A novel approach with a combined bio-phytoremediation strategy and effective analytical techniques

Phytoremediation is a sustainable technology capable of efficiently removing low or moderate contamination. However, complex pollution conditions can drastically reduce efficiency, as plants can show themselves sensitive to organic contaminants, growing slowly and thus impairing metals' absorption. In cases where the action of indigenous bacteria degrading hydrocarbons and promoting plant growth is not sufficient, more sophisticated strategies are necessary. This investigation aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a train of technologies that sees advanced phytoremediation in combination with other biological approaches to remediate soil from a disused industrial area contaminated by N-containing compounds, alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons, copper, and nickel. In particular, a stepwise procedure was used with a pre-treatment (landfarming and bioaugmentation), significantly affecting the soil's fertility, increasing germinability up to 85%, and allowing the plants to extract the metals adequately. Furthermore, with EDTA as a mobilizing agent, nickel absorption has increased up to 36% in Helianthus annuus and up to 88% in Zea mays. For copper, an increase of up to 262% in Helianthus annuus and up to 202% in Zea Mays was obtained. Analysis through Fourier-Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry highlighted the biodegradation of some of the N-containing compounds recording, after phytoremediation, a decrease of up to almost 90%. Metagenomic analysis of the soil showed a typical microbial population of oxidizing hydrocarbon strains with a prevalence of the Nocardiaceae family (43%). The results obtained appear to confirm the usefulness of the approach developed, and the employed cutting-edge analytical techniques allowed a top-notch characterization of the remediation scenario.
