Calponin expression in laryngeal myoepithelial carcinoma and its prognostic implications: a case report and literature review

Laryngeal Primary Myoepithelial Carcinoma: Case Report and a Systematic Review of Literature

Myoepithelial carcinoma of the head and neck is a rare malignant tumor that usually arises from the salivary glands but rarely from the larynx. Here, we describe 11 cases (one treated by us and 10 previously published) of laryngeal myoepithelial carcinoma. Our patient was a 60-year-old male who initially presented with hoarseness and throat pain. The patient had suffered from continuing hoarseness and throat pain for one month before he consulted an otorhinolaryngologist. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed a polypoid tumor involving the right vocal cords. Biopsy was performed, and the disease was pathologically diagnosed as myoepithelial carcinoma of the larynx by hematoxylin-eosin and immunohistochemical staining. The total follow-up period was 15 months. Repeated laryngoscopies or CT scans revealed no recurrence or residual lesion during the post-surgical course.

Preliminary proteomic analysis of human serum from patients with laryngeal carcinoma

To better evaluate the serum protein alterations in patients with laryngeal carcinoma during surgical treatment process, a comparative proteomic analysis of human serum from patients with laryngeal carcinoma between pre- and post-operation group was performed using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, in combination with matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and database searching. Statistical analysis indicated that 16 gel spots corresponding to 12 proteins altered their expression significantly between the two groups of patients with laryngeal carcinoma. Of these 12 proteins, 6 proteins were up-regulated in the pre-operation group. The subsequent Western blot confirmed the results of proteome analysis. Measurement of MDA and SOD levels in serum combining with bioinformatics analysis indicated the potential roles of the oxidant stress and immune response as target in monitoring and treating laryngeal carcinoma. The study provides new insight into the laryngeal carcinoma development and treatment, and the identified proteins are warranted to be further studied.

Expression of glucose transporter-1, hypoxia-inducible factor-1α, phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase and protein kinase B (Akt) in relation to [(18)F]fluorodeoxyglucose uptake in nasopharyngeal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma: a case report and literature review

This report presents a case of nasopharyngeal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and a literature review concerning the use of [(18)F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT). A 37-year old man was admitted to hospital complaining of nasal secretions with minor epistaxis and a 20-year history of snoring. Nasal endoscopy found diffuse swelling in the nasopharynx and a biopsy was performed. Prior to chemotherapy, FDG-PET/CT showed soft tissue diffuse thickening and FDG accumulation in the nasopharynx and bilateral cervical lymph nodes; FDG did not accumulate elsewhere. After four cycles of chemotherapy (rituximab, cyclo phosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine) and prednisone treatment, FDG-PET/CT showed that FDG still accumulated in the nasopharynx and bilateral cervical lymph nodes, therefore radiotherapy was initiated. At 1 year, FDG-PET/CT showed no FDG accumulation. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that the tumour was positive for phosphorylated protein kinase B (Akt), suggesting that FDG uptake may be associated with factors activated by the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt signalling pathway.
