Evaluation of factors influencing the guide to read biomedical English literature course for Chinese new medical postgraduates-a multiple regression analysis

Factors affecting the scientific research ability and the corresponding countermeasures in clinical postgraduates

BACKGROUND

Scientific research ability (SRA) is very important for clinical postgraduates. However, the factors affecting students' SRA are constantly changing with the development of medicine. The aim of this study was to investigate the current situation of SRA in clinical postgraduates and exploring the potential factors and the corresponding countermeasures under the background of new medical science.

METHODS

A total of 133 postgraduates (first- or second-year) were investigated by questionnaire in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University. All results were analyzed by R software.

RESULTS

In terms of the SRA, academic-degree postgraduate students (ADPSs) were significantly better than professional-degree postgraduate students (PDPSs) (P = 0.001), the students with scientific research interest were remarkably better than those without scientific research interest (P = 0.004), the students who mastered statistical analysis methods were more prominent than those who did not (P = 0.007), the students with paper-writing skills were obviously superior to those without it (P = 0.003), and the second-year students were notably better than the first-year students (P = 0.003). Stratified analysis by the above factors except the degree type showed no significant difference in the first-year postgraduates. In the second-year postgraduates, the ADPSs were remarkably superior to the PDPSs (P = 0.002), the students with scientific research interest were obviously better than those without scientific research interest (P = 0.014), the students with more time investment in scientific research were more prominent than those with less time investment in scientific research (P = 0.025), the students with paper-writing skills were notably superior to those without it (P = 0.031), and the students with plotting ability were better than those without it (P = 0.013).

CONCLUSION

The important factors affecting the SRA of clinical postgraduates include the degree type, the grade of student, scientific research interest, time investment in scientific research, statistical analysis methods, paper-writing skills, plotting ability. In short, earlier systematic SRA training contributes to the improvement of SRA in clinical postgraduates, especially in PDPSs.

Complex motivations of Japanese medical students to an online medical English course during the COVID-19 pandemic

Background: In response to globalism, many East-Asian countries now include a Medical English course in their undergraduate medical education syllabus. Traditional didactic educational culture is a potential barrier for teaching and learning medical English in East-Asian countries. Online technology-based learning has been recognized as an effective instructional strategy for teaching medical English in the East. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between the related attribute factors of students' motivation to learn medical English through an online modality. Methods: Of 134 eligible fourth-year medical students who participated in an online medical English course at a Japanese medical school, 105 were enrolled in this single cohort study. The participants completed pre- and post-course surveys regarding their motivation during the course, including perceived academic control and task value, and their assignment scores. A structural equation model was used to examine the hypothesized relationship of constructs, based on control-value theory. Results: The model showed a good fit for the data (χ 2[df=7] = 1.821, p=0.969, CFI = 1.000, RMSEA < 0.001, SRMR < 0.05, GFI = 0.993, AGFI = 0.980). The latent variables of the perceived course achievement related to the observed variables of academic control and task value scale scores, and negatively predicted willingness for self-study after course completion. In addition, the preference of English as the course language negatively predicted willingness for self-study of medical English. Conclusion: Choice of English as the language of instruction and perceived high course achievement negatively predicted students’ motivation for further English self-study after the class. The importance of incorporating the perspective of lifelong learning into the teaching of medical English was recognized.

Chinese nursing postgraduates’ views on implementing outcome-oriented academic English course: a descriptive study†

Background: According to previous studies on professional English course teaching, the evaluation of course teaching was positive, but the vast majorities focus on medical English literature reading, professional English vocabulary, and professional English translation. As an alternative, the course design based on academic learning needs under the outcome-oriented education/model emphasizes the improvement of students’ comprehensive ability in oral expression, literature reading, writing, and academic communication.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to analyze nursing postgraduates’ opinions on learning the outcome-oriented academic English course.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study. A total of 150 first-year nursing postgraduates enrolled in the “Academic Professional English for Nursing Postgraduates” course. After completing the course learning, students scanned QR codes generated by the online questionnaire and completed it anonymously within 48 h.

Results: The students who participated in this course strongly believed that it “helped them strengthen their English speakability” (4.8 points), “made them more confident to participate in international academic conferences and exchanges in the future” (4.8 points), and “helped them apply English more in the nursing professional field in the future” (4.7 points).

Conclusions: The implementation of outcome-oriented course teaching helps students to understand the research of foreign scholars and effectively express their own research content with English as a tool. It motivates them to continuously use English for professional and academic communication.
