Abstract
BACKGROUND Ultrasound is a non-invasive, cross-sectional imaging technique emerging in dentistry. It is an adjunct tool for diagnosing pathologies in the oral cavity that overcomes some limitations of current methodologies, including direct clinical examination, 2D radiographs, and cone beam computerized tomography. Increasing demand for soft tissue imaging has led to continuous improvements on transducer miniaturization and spatial resolution. The aims of this study are (1) to create a comprehensive overview of the current literature of ultrasonic imaging relating to dentistry, and (2) to provide a view onto investigations with immediate, intermediate, and long-term impact in periodontology and implantology. METHODS A rapid literature review was performed using two broad searches conducted in the PubMed database, yielding 576 and 757 citations, respectively. A rating was established within a citation software (EndNote) using a 5-star classification. The broad search with 757 citations allowed for high sensitivity whereas the subsequent rating added specificity. RESULTS A critical review of the clinical applications of ultrasound in dentistry was provided with a focus on applications in periodontology and implantology. The role of ultrasound as a developing dental diagnostic tool was reviewed. Specific uses such as soft and hard tissue imaging, longitudinal monitoring, as well as anatomic and physiological evaluation were discussed. CONCLUSIONS Future efforts should be directed towards the transition of ultrasonography from a research tool to a clinical tool. Moreover, a dedicated effort is needed to introduce ultrasonic imaging to dental education and the dental community to ultimately improve the quality of patient care.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe a new B-mode ultrasound examination technique to assess cheek tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS 30 cheek oral cavity lesions of different histological types (11 benign and 19 malignant) from 23 patients (11 women and 12 men, 7-82 years old, mean age of 49.5 years) were analyzed. Transcutaneous oral B-mode ultrasound (5-12 MHz transducer) was carried out in two stages. Initially it was performed conventionally with an empty mouth. Next, the patient was asked to keep their oral cavity filled with water (like when using a mouthwash) during imaging for the new test examination technique. The anatomical layers of this region and the characteristics of the tumors were evaluated. Lesions were classified as ill defined, partially defined, or defined. Conventional findings were compared to those of the new technique using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Ultrasound results were compared to histological findings analyzed by an independent team. RESULTS The conventional empty mouth technique was able to confidently define lesion extension in only 6 of the 30 lesions, while the water-filled mouth technique was able to confidently define lesion extension in 29 of the 30 lesions (p<0.00001). CONCLUSION We present a novel technique that dramatically improves ultrasound staging of cheek oral cavity tumors. In addition to the increase in ultrasound accuracy, this technique does not require any special equipment or extra cost, is very well tolerated by patients, and thus should be considered in the evaluation of every patient undergoing transcutaneous cheek ultrasound for oral cavity lesion characterization.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To date, imaging and non-invasive examination methods for evaluating the oral tissue of patients who with oral chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) are still lacking. Herein, we assessed the ultrasonography imaging characteristics of chronic GVHD patients' buccal soft tissue and evaluated the response to treatment using gray-scale and power Doppler (PD) ultrasound. The overall objective of the study was to determine the potential of ultrasonography to provide an early and objective indication of a therapeutic response to treatment intervention in oral chronic GVHD. METHODS Buccal mucosa in 21 patients with clinically diagnosis of oral chronic GVHD were assessed before and after 14 day treatment between 2016 and 2018. Ultrasonography assessment included thickness and echogenicity evaluation, and PD. Echogenicity and PD were measured and scored according to a semi-quantitative method. Ultrasonography parameters were compared with clinical activity assessments of disease activity and patient-reported measures. RESULTS Following 14 day therapy, a significant decrease in PD scores and patient-reported measures was observed (p < 0.01), and clinical assessment scores also decreased (p < 0.05). Changes from baseline PD scores correlated significantly with patient-reported measures (r = 0.85, p < 0.01). Changes in PD scores correlated moderately with the changes in the clinical assessments from baseline (r = 0.46, p < 0.05). A significant decrease in PD scores was observed in the buccal soft tissue of patients that responded clinically to the treatment. A significant decrease in PD scores was also observed in patients that were failed to show clinical improvement (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Ultrasonography is a novel and feasible imaging technique for measurement of the response of oral chronic GVHD to therapy. Ultrasonography yields additional information about buccal mucosa and is a complementaty to clinical examination.

Abstract
Background Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a well-recognized "potentially malignant" disorder. It mostly affects the productive population of young adults and adolescents. The diagnosis of oral submucous fibrosis is primarily clinical and subjective. The only objective diagnostic method for OSMF is tissue biopsy. This study was conducted to find the potential use of ultrasound elastography to objectively quantify the clinical presentation in accordance with severity of the clinical condition in OSMF. Materials and Methods The study sample consisted of 27 clinically diagnosed and staged participants with OSMF. Transcutaneous ultrasonography was done by a single operator on GE Logiq E9 machine with a 6-15 MHz linear matrix probe. Color-coded scheme was used to qualitatively grade the eight different zones of oral mucosa with the use of stress-strain elastography. The grades ranged from 0 to 5, where 0 represented artifacts and color range from red to blue corresponded to varying degree of increasing tissue stiffness. Clinical stage 1, 2, and 3 corresponded to mouth opening of >30 mm, 20-30 mm, and <20 mm, respectively. The summative elastography score range as follows: 8-10, 11-14, and ≥15 represented the respective degree of tissue stiffness from soft, mild stiff to severe stiff. Results The results obtained by Pearson's correlation between the elastographic grading and clinical grading came out to be 0.007, and it was highly significant. The sensitivity and specificity of the diagnostic method were 90.9% and 20%, respectively. Conclusion The advantages of ultrasound elastography as a diagnostic tool over the subjective clinical method of diagnosis and staging of OSMF looks promising. Further studies should be conducted with a suitable specific transducer probe and with quantitative diagnostic elastography method.

Abstract
Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is a chronic, insidious, and progressive oral mucosal disease that affects entire oral cavity and sometimes pharynx. This oral potentially malignant disorder has a high rate of malignant transformation (7%-30%) to oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), posing global problems for public health. Due to enormous efforts dedicated to this disease in the past decades, there have been significant advances in identification of its etiology and pathogenesis as well as development of corresponding therapeutic approaches, in spite of several challenges. This study reviewed the existing literature concerning OSF in Asian countries, encompassing its etiology, histopathology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and differential diagnosis, and treatments. For improving treatment of OSF, the multifactorial etiology analysis, incorporation of effective molecular pathways, cytokines and cells for mechanism illustration, and integration of multidisciplinary modalities were also expounded to guide future research and clinical practice.

Abstract
The aim of the work described here was to compare intra-oral and transcutaneous ultrasonography (US) scanning and to determine the normal values of buccal mucosa thickness and echogenicity. A total of 190 volunteers underwent US examination of the buccal mucosa. The thickness of the buccal epithelial layer was recorded in 19 subjects via both intra-oral and transcutaneous methods. Overall, 171 healthy adults were examined through intra-oral US. Buccal epithelial layer measurement was unreliable via the transcutaneous method (p = 0.001). The mean time required for visualizing the buccal mucosa was 75 and 171s with intra-oral and transcutaneous US, respectively (p < 0.001). The thickness of the buccal epithelial layers significantly differed with age and sex (p < 0.001), and was positively correlated with height, weight and body surface area. Intra-oral US was proposed as a conventional method for examination of the buccal mucosa. Normal buccal epithelial thickness in adults is associated with age, sex, height, weight and body surface area.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the role of ultrasonography in oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) patients. Material and methods A total of 150 subjects were divided equally into six groups (Group I: 25 healthy subjects; Group II: 25 healthy subjects with habit; Group III: 25 OSMF stage I; Group IV: 25 OSMF stage II; Group V: 25 OSMF stage III; and Group VI: 25 stage OSMF IVA). The grading of OSMF were done according the clinical classification given by Khanna and Andrade (2005). After fulfilling inclusion and exclusion criteria each subject underwent extraoral ultrasonographic evaluation of submucosal thickness and vascularity in terms of peak systolic velocity (PSV), bilaterally on buccal and labial mucosa. Furthermore, statistical comparison of each group was done, and sensitivity and specificity of USG measurements was obtained in comparison with clinical diagnosis. The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS ver. 20.0. Results A statistically significant increase in mean submucosal thickness was shown, and a decrease in PSV with the advancement of severity of the OSMF. In ultrasonographic diagnosis of OSMF, the reported submucosal thickness had a sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and accuracy was 80%, 100%, 100%, 71.4%, and 87%, respectively, but PSV failed to classify the lesion. Conclusions Because the severity of the disease showed a direct relationship with submucosal thickness and an inverse relationship with PSV, habit-induced mucosal alteration in submucosal thickness can be seen on USG, which cannot be appreciated on clinical examination. Hence, USG can be a promising tool for early diagnosis, assessment of the severity, and evaluation of prognosis of OSMF.
