On the dielectric function tuning of random metal-dielectric nanocomposites for metamaterial applications

Extinction and attenuation by voids in absorbing host media

Extinction and attenuation by particles in an absorbing host have suffered a long-lasting controversy, which has impeded the physical insights on the radiative transfer in the voids dispersed composite. In this paper, we outline the existing extinction definitions, including an equivalence theorem neglecting the host absorption, the near-field analytical definition neglecting the far-field effects, and the operational way which simulates the actual detector readings. It is shown that, under the independent scattering approximation, the generalized operational definition is equivalent to a recent effective medium method according to the rigorous theory of multiple scattering. Using this generalized extinction, we show the important influences of the host absorption on the void extinction. Specifically, at the void resonance, the extinction cross sections of the small voids can be positive, zero, and even negative, which is regulated quantitively by host absorption. Considering the voids in SiC or Ag, the intriguing properties are verified through the attenuation coefficient calculated by the Maxwell-Garnett effective medium theory. In contrast, the equivalent theorem cannot describe any void resonance structures in the absorbing media. Also, the near-field definition fails to generate negative extinction and cannot thus describe the diminished total absorption by the voids. Our results might provide a better understanding of complex scattering theory in absorbing media.

Spectrally Selective Solar Absorber Coating of W/WAlSiN/SiON/SiO2 with Enhanced Absorption through Gradation of Optical Constants: Validation by Simulation

The properties of spectrally selective solar absorber coatings can be fine-tuned by varying the thickness and composition of the individual layers. We have deposited individual layers of WAlSiN, SiON, and SiO2 of thicknesses ~940, 445, and 400 nm, respectively, for measuring the refractive indices and extinction coefficients using spectroscopic ellipsometer measurements. Appropriate dispersion models were used for curve fitting of Ψ and Δ for individual and multilayer stacks in obtaining the optical constants. The W/WAlSiN/SiON/SiO2 solar absorber exhibits a high solar absorptance of 0.955 and low thermal emissivity of 0.10. The refractive indices and extinction coefficients of different layers in the multilayer stack decrease from the substrate to the top anti-reflection layer. The graded refractive index of the individual layers in the multilayer stack enhances the solar absorption. In the tandem absorber, WAlSiN is the main absorbing layer, whereas SiON and SiO2 act as anti-reflection layers. A commercial simulation tool was used to generate the theoretical reflectance spectra using the optical constants are in well accordance with the experimental data. We have attempted to understand the gradation in refractive indices of the multilayer stack and the physics behind it by computational simulation method in explaining the achieved optical properties. In brief, the novelty of the present work is in designing the solar absorber coating based on computational simulation and ellipsometry measurements of individual layers and multilayer stack in achieving a high solar selectivity. The superior optical properties of W/WAlSiN/SiON/SiO2 makes it a potential candidate for spectrally selective solar absorber coatings.

Plasmonic Nanoparticles and Island Films for Solar Energy Harvesting: A Comparative Study of Cu, Al, Ag and Au Performance

Alternative materials that can potentially replace Au and Ag in plasmonics and broaden its application potential have been actively investigated over the last decade. Cu and Al have been usually overlooked as plasmonic material candidates because they are prone to oxidisation. In this work the plasmonic performance of Cu and Al is investigated using numerical simulations of different nanostructures (spheres, cubes, rods and particle dimers) and taking into account the presence of oxidisation. It is shown that geometry can play a dominant role over material properties and the performance of Cu and Al becomes comparable to that of Ag and Au for systems of non-spherical particles and strong electromagnetic coupling among particles. This observation is experimentally confirmed by the fabrication and characterisation of Cu and Al metal island films. Optical characterisation of the samples reveals a comparable performance of these metals to that obtained for Ag and Au and suggests that Cu and Al metal island films can offer an efficient low-cost platform for solar energy harvesting, as shown in water vapour generation proof of concept experiments.

Hierarchical porous plasmonic metamaterials for reproducible ultrasensitive surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Hierarchical porous plasmonic metamaterials consisting of periodic nanoholes with tunable diameter and uniformly distributed mesopores over the bulk are developed as a new class of 3D surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates. This multiscale architecture not only facilitates efficient cascaded electromagnetic enhancement but also provides an enormous number of Raman-active binding sites, exhibiting excellent reproducibility and ultrasensitive detection of aromatic molecules down to 10(-13) M.

Plasmonic layers based on Au-nanoparticle-doped TiO2 for optoelectronics: structural and optical properties

The anti-reflective effect of dielectric coatings used in silicon solar cells has traditionally been the subject of intensive studies and practical applications. In recent years the interest has permanently grown in plasmonic layers based on metal nanoparticles, which are shown to increase light trapping in the underlying silicon. In the present work we have combined these two concepts by means of in situ synthesis of Au nanoparticles in a dielectric matrix (TiO2), which is commonly used as an anti-reflective coating in silicon solar cells, and added the third element: a 10-20% porosity in the matrix. The porosity is formed by means of a controllable wet etching by low concentration HF. As a consequence, the experimentally measured reflectance of silicon coated by such a plasmonic layer decreases to practically zero in a broad wavelength region around the localized surface plasmon resonance. Furthermore, we demonstrate that extinction and reflectance spectra of silicon coated by the plasmonic films can be successfully accounted for by means of Fresnel formulae, in which a double refractive index of the metal-dielectric material is used. This double refractive index cannot be explained by effective medium theory (Maxwell-Garnett, for example) and appears when the contribution of Au nanoparticles located at the TiO2/Si interface is high enough to result in formation of interface surface plasmon modes.

Design and production of bicolour reflecting coatings with Au metal island films

Optical properties of metal island films (MIFs) can be combined with interference of dielectric coatings. A set of multilayer designs containing metal clusters reflecting different colours from front and back side of the coating was obtained by numerical optimization. The chosen designs presenting the range of feasible colours were deposited by electron beam evaporation. Spectrophotometric and ellipsometric measurements verified that the produced coatings present an excellent agreement with the optical performance calculated from the designs. Numerical optimization was verified as a useful method in designing of coatings containing MIFs. This approach can ease the implementation of metal clusters into multilayer designs and broaden the applications of MIFs.

Comparison of two techniques for reliable characterization of thin metal-dielectric films

In the present study we determine the optical parameters of thin metal-dielectric films using two different characterization techniques based on nonparametric and multiple oscillator models. We consider four series of thin metal-dielectric films produced under various deposition conditions with different optical properties. We compare characterization results obtained by nonparametric and multiple oscillator techniques and demonstrate that the results are consistent. The consistency of the results proves their reliability.
