Silk fibroin fibers decorated with urchin-like Au/Ag nanoalloys: a flexible hygroscopic SERS sensor for monitoring of folic acid in human sweat

Graphene nanospacer layer modulated multilayer composite structures of precious metals and their SERS performance

Graphene(G)-noble metal-ZnO hybrid systems were developed as highly sensitive and recyclable surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platforms, in which ultrathin graphene of varying thickness was embedded between two metallic layers on top of a ZnO layer. Due to the multi-dimensional plasmonic coupling effect, the Au/G/Ag@ZnO multilayer structure possessed ultrahigh sensitivity with the detection limit of Rhodamine 6 G (R6G) as low as 1.0×10-13 mol/L and a high enhancement factor of 5.68×107. Both experimental and simulation results showed that graphene films could significantly regulate the interlayer plasmon resonance coupling strength, and single-layer graphene had the best interlayer regulation effect. Additionally, the SERS substrate structure prepared through physical methods exhibited high uniformity, the graphene component of the substrate possessed excellent molecular enrichment ability and silver oxidation inhibition characteristics, resulting in a substrate with high stability and exceptional reproducibility. The signal change was less than 15%. Simultaneously, due to the excellent photocatalytic performance of the low-cost and wide-band-gap semiconductor material ZnO, the SERS substrate exhibited exceptional reusability. Even after five cycles of adsorption-desorption, the SERS performance remained stable and maintained a reliable detection limit. The study introduced a novel approach to creating multilayer composite SERS substrates that exhibited exceptional performance, offering a new analytical tool with high sensitivity, stability, and reusability.

Dual Function of 4-Aminothiophene in Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Application as an Internal Standard and Adsorbent for Controlling Au Nanocrystal Morphology

The sensitivity and quantitative accuracy of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) are the main factors that restrict its application. Here, novel Au nanoscale convex polyhedrons (Au NCPs) were designed and fabricated to solve these problems via an embedded standard, including eight pods and six small protrusions. Spherical Au seeds regrew into different sizes of Au NCPs with a face-centered cubic structure. This morphology is due to the dual mechanism of the 4-aminothiophene (4-ATP) molecule that serves as an internal standard and a surface ligand regulator combined with the regulatory role of hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride. The results show that Au NCPs were enclosed by high-index {12 9 1} facets, which greatly improved the local plasma resonance and reduced the lowest SERS detectable concentration of pyrene in standard seawater to 0.5 nM. An effective reference was produced by embedding 4-ATP with a relative standard deviation value less than 2.97% (in the same batch) and 3.92% (between different batches). Our research offers a new strategy for morphological regulation of metal nanocrystals, which is useful for the preparation of highly sensitive SERS substrates and trace analysis.

Flexible Sweat Sensors: From Films to Textiles

Flexible sweat sensors have found widespread potential applications for long-term wear and tracking and real-time monitoring of human health. However, the main substrate currently used in common flexible sweat sensors is thin film, which has disadvantages such as poor air permeability and the need for additional wearables. In this Review, the recent progress of sweat sensors has been systematically summarized by the types of monitoring methods of sweat sensors. In addition, this Review introduces and compares the performance of sweat sensors based on thin film and textile substrates such as fiber/yarn. Finally, opportunities and suggestions for the development of flexible sweat sensors are presented by summarizing the integration methods of sensors and human body monitoring sites.

Ultra-trace and quantitative SERS detection of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons based on Au nanoscale convex polyhedrons with embedded probe molecules

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has great potential for the detection of marine pollutants, but it is still restricted in ultra-trace and quantitative analysis. Here, a strategy for the detection of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was proposed based on Au nanoscale convex polyhedrons (Au NCPs) coated with high-energy facets and embedded with 4-ATP as a probe molecule. Au NCPs acted as SERS substrates and led to limits of detection (LODs) for six common PAHs that reached 0.01 nM. Using internal calibration, the relative standard deviations (RSD) of the spectral stability and reproducibility were as low as 3.36% and 5.11%, respectively. The maximum mean relative errors (AREs) of the predicted and true values were 6.28%. The results indicate that the resulting Au NCPs improved the ultra-trace and quantitative detection of SERS, thus suggesting that the Au NCPs have practical application value in SERS.

Synchronous enhancement of upconversion and NIR-IIb photoluminescence of rare-earth nanoprobes for theranostics

This study develops a multifunctional molecular optical nanoprobe (SiO₂@Gd₂O₃: Yb³⁺/Er³⁺/Li⁺@Ce6/MC540) with a unique core-satellite form. The rare-earth doped nanodots with good crystallinity are uniformly embedded on the surface of a hydrophilic silica core, and the nanoprobe can emit near-infrared-IIb (NIR-IIb) luminescence for imaging as well as visible light that perfectly matches the absorption bands of two included photosensitizers under 980 nm irradiation. The optimal NIR-IIb emission and upconversion efficiency are attainable via regulating the doping ratios of Yb³⁺, Er³⁺ and Li⁺ ions. The relevant energy transfer mechanism was addressed theoretically that underpins rare-earth photoluminescence where energy back-transfer and cross relaxation processes play pivotal roles. The nanoprobe can achieve an excellent dual-drive photodynamic treatment performance, verified by singlet oxygen detections and live-dead cells imaging assays, with a synergistic effect. And a brightest NIR-IIb imaging was attained in tumoral site of mouse. The nanoprobe has a high potential to serve as a new type of optical theranostic agent for tumor.

Fast Synthesis of Au Nanoparticles on Metal-Phenolic Network for Sweat SERS Analysis

The biochemical composition of sweat is closely related to the human physiological state, which provides a favorable window for the monitoring of human health status, especially for the athlete. Herein, an ultra-simple strategy based on the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique for sweat analysis is established. Metal-phenolic network (MPN), an outstanding organic-inorganic hybrid material, is adopted as the reductant and platform for the in situ formation of Au-MPN, which displays excellent SERS activity with the limit of detection to 10^-15 M for 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA). As an ultrasensitive SERS sensor, Au-MPN is capable of discriminating the molecular fingerprints of sweat components acquired from a volunteer after exercise, such as urea, uric acid, lactic acid, and amino acid. For pH sensing, Au-MPN/4-MBA efficiently presents the pH values of the volunteer's sweat, which can indicate the electrolyte metabolism during exercise. This MPN-based SERS sensing strategy unlocks a new route for the real-time physiological monitoring of human health.

Long Spiky Au-Ag Nanostar Based Fiber Probe for Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

The detection performances of noble metal-based surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) devices are determined by the compositions and geometries of the metal nanostructures, as well as the substrates. In the current study, long spiky Au-Ag alloy nanostars were synthesized, and both core diameters and spike lengths were controlled by Lauryl sulfobetaine concentrations (as the nanostructure growth skeleton). The long spiky star geometries were confirmed by transmission electron micrograph images. Elements energy dispersive spectrometer mapping confirmed that Au and Ag elements were inhomogeneously distributed in the nanostructures and demonstrated a higher Ag content at surface for potential better SERS performance. Selected synthesized spiky nanostars were uniformly assembled on multi-mode silica fiber for probe fabrication by silanization. The SERS performance were characterized using crystal violet (CV) and rhodamine 6G (R6G) as analyte molecules. The lowest detection limit could reach as low as 10^-8 M, with a 6.23 × 10⁶ enhancement factor, and the relationship between analyte concentrations and Raman intensities was linear for both CV and R6G, which indicated the potential qualitative and quantitative molecule detection applications. Moreover, the fiber probes also showed good reproducibility and stability in the ambient atmosphere.

Extraordinary approach to further boost plasmonic NIR-SERS by cryogenic temperature-suppressed non-radiative recombination

We report an effective strategy to promote the near-infrared surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy (NIR-SERS) activity by boosting the photon-induced charge transfer (PICT) efficiency at cryogenic temperature. Based on as-prepared Au/Ag nano-urchins (NUs) with abundant surface defects, the extremely low temperature (77 K) can significantly weaken the metallic lattice vibration and reduce the recombination of thermal phonons and photoexcited electrons, then accelerate the migration of energetic electrons. It enables the NIR-SERS detection limit of dye molecules to be achieved at 10^-17 M, which is nearly three orders of magnitude better than that at room temperature. The present work provides a new, to the best of our knowledge, approach for ultra-trace NIR-SERS bioanalysis.
