Terahertz-field-induced second harmonic generation through Pockels effect in zinc telluride crystal

Local measurement of terahertz field-induced second harmonic generation in plasma filaments

The concept of Terahertz Field-Induced Second Harmonic (TFISH) Generation is revisited to introduce a single-shot detection scheme based on third order nonlinearities. Focused specifically on the further development of THz plasma-based sources, we begin our research by reimagining the TFISH system to serve as a direct plasma diagnostic. In this work, an optical probe beam is used to mix directly with the strong ponderomotive current associated with laser-induced ionization. A four-wave mixing (FWM) process then generates a strong second-harmonic optical wave because of the mixing of the probe beam with the nonlinear current components oscillating at THz frequencies. The observed conversion efficiency is high enough that for the first time, the TFISH signal appears visible to the human eye. We perform spectral, spatial, and temporal analysis on the detected second-harmonic frequency and show its direct relationship to the nonlinear current. Further, a method to detect incoherent and coherent THz inside plasma filaments is devised using spatio-temporal couplings. The single-shot detection configurations are theoretically described using a combination of expanded FWM models with Kostenbauder and Gaussian Q-matrices. We show that the retrieved temporal traces for THz radiation from single- and two-color laser-induced air-plasma sources match theoretical descriptions very well. High temporal resolution is shown with a detection bandwidth limited only by the spatial extent of the probe laser beam. Large detection bandwidth and temporal characterization is shown for THz radiation confined to under-dense plasma filaments induced by < 100 fs lasers below the relativistic intensity limit.

Terahertz generation from ZnTe optically pumped above and below the bandgap

We report on the generation of THz waves through optical rectification in ZnTe of femtosecond laser pulses whose photon energy is tuned from below to above the ZnTe bandgap energy. The THz signal exhibits a pronounced peak at the bandgap energy, at THz frequencies for which losses in ZnTe remain small. This peak is likely due to the resonance of the ZnTe nonlinear susceptibility in the vicinity of the bandgap.

Second harmonic generation in the bulk of silicon induced by an electric field of a high power terahertz pulse

The experimental findings on the second harmonic generation (SHG) in centrosymmetric crystal silicon are reported. The SHG is induced by extremely high electric field (up to 15 MV/cm) parallel to the crystal surface of a short terahertz (THz) pulse while probing by an infrared femtosecond optical pulse. The SHG under such unique conditions is reported for the first time. At the electric field amplitude above 8 MV/cm, the quadratic dependence of the SHG yield integrated over the THz pulse duration on the electric field is violated and SHG yield is not changed with a further increase of the THz field. Saturation of SHG intensity at high electric fields is explained in terms of carrier density increase due to impact ionization and destructive interference of electric-field induced and current induced nonlinear polarizations.

Transient Second Harmonic Generation Induced by Single Cycle THz pulses in Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3/MgO

The ability to switch ferroics (magnets, ferroelectrics, multiferroics) between two stable bit states is the main principle of modern data storage technology. Due to many new ideas, originating from fundamental research during the last 50 years, this technology has developed in a breath-taking fashion. Ever increasing demands for faster and more energy efficient data storage strongly motivate fundamental studies of dynamics in ferroics triggered by ultrashort stimuli. It has been recently realized that nearly single cycle intense THz pulses and the phenomenon of the second harmonic generation are appealing tools for excitation and detection of poorly understood ultrafast dynamics of electric polarization in ferroelectrics at the picosecond timescale. Here we investigate picosecond dynamics of second harmonic from near-infrared pulse in ferroelectric heterostructure Ba_0.8Sr_0.2TiO₃/MgO triggered by the electric field of a nearly single cycle intense THz pulse. The dynamics of the nonlinear optical signal is characterized by a step and oscillations at the frequency of about 1.67 THz. Although the observations can be mistakenly interpreted as oscillations of the electric polarization at the frequency of the soft mode and switching of the order parameter to another metastable state, here we show that the THz modulation of second harmonic generation in Ba_0.8Sr_0.2TiO₃/MgO has a purely optical origin. The observation can be explained assuming that the THz pulse is a relativistically propagating inhomogeneity which induces center of symmetry breaking and linear birefringence. Our work reveals the role of propagation effects in interpretation of time-resolved non-linear optical experiments and thus it has important implications for experimental studies of ultrafast dynamics in ferroics.

THz Electric Field-Induced Second Harmonic Generation in Inorganic Ferroelectric

Second Harmonic Generation induced by the electric field of a strong nearly single-cycle terahertz pulse with the peak amplitude of 300 kV/cm is studied in a classical inorganic ferroelectric thin film of (Ba_0.8Sr_0.2)TiO₃. The dependences of the SHG intensity on the polarization of the incoming light is revealed and interpreted in terms of electric polarization induced in the plane of the film. As the THz pulse pumps the medium in the range of phononic excitations, the induced polarization is explained as a dynamical change of the ferrolectric order parameter. It is estimated that under action of the THz pulse the ferroelectric order parameter acquires an in-plane component up to 6% of the net polarization.
