Interactive survey of consumer awareness of nanotechnologies and nanoparticles in consumer products in South Korea

Advanced sanitation products infused with silver nanoparticles for viral protection and their ecological and environmental consequences

The outbreak of coronavirus ailments (COVID-19) in 2019 resulted in public health crisis leading to global pandemonium. In response to the high prevalence of disease transmission, governments all around the globe implemented emergency measures in various routes (e.g., social distancing, personal hygiene, and disinfection of public/private places) to curb/contain COVID-19 infections. The social media infodemic, released as uncensored publishing and/or views/recommendations, also triggered large-scale behavior changes such as the overuse of advanced sanitation products (ASPs) containing nanomaterials. The majority of these ASPs contain silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as an active ingredient to enhance their antimicrobial potential. Ecotoxicological concerns such as the transformation and degradation of these AgNP-infused products in terrestrial or aquatic environments are under the jurisdiction of the EPA. However, they are not considered in the FDA approval process. In light of excessive consumption of ASPs, it is time to consider their ecotoxicological screening prior to market approval jointly by the FDA and EPA, along with the implementation of post-market surveillance strategies. At the same time, efforts should be put into running awareness programs to prevent the overuse of ASPs.

Public Awareness of Nanotechnology and Its Implications for Health in Jordan

Nanotechnology is often described as an emerging technology, holding promise for a diverse range of fields. Public awareness may have a strong impact on public acceptance of nano-technology and its various implications. In Jordan, nano-education has only been introduced recently into universities and it is offered to students of pharmacy, engineering, biomedical sciences, and agriculture. However, there is no data available on nanotechnology awareness among the public in Jordan. Therefore, we conducted this study to evaluate Jordanian public awareness and concern about nanotechnology, nanomaterials, and nanoproducts and its implications for health related applications of nanotechnology. An online survey was developed consisting of 15 questions and separated into three domains. The study findings show that more than half of the respondents have a very low awareness with regards to nanotechnology and its various implications. Additionally, respondents show interest to learn more about nanotechnology and its implications, preferring several sources of information such as media, universities and research institutions.

Role of surface modification in zinc oxide nanoparticles and its toxicity assessment toward human dermal fibroblast cells

The wide-scale applications of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) in photocatalysts, gas sensors, and cosmetics may cause toxicity to humans and environments. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to reduce the toxicity of ZnO NPs by coating them with a silica (SiO2) layer, which could be used in human applications, such as cosmetic preparations. The sol-gel method was used to synthesize core ZnO with SiO2-shelled NPs (SiO2/ZnO NPs) with varying degrees of coating. Diverse studies were performed to analyze the toxicity of NPs against cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. To ensure the decreased toxicity of the produced SiO2/ZnO NPs, cytotoxicity in membrane damage and/or intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) were assessed by employing 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide, lactate dehydrogenase, 2',7'-dichlorofluorescin, and lipid peroxide estimations. The cores of ZnO NPs exhibited cytotoxicity over time, regardless of shell thickness. Nevertheless, the thicker SiO2/ZnO NPs revealed reduced enzyme leakage, decreased peroxide production, and less oxidative stress than their bare ZnO NPs or thinner SiO2/ZnO NPs. Therefore, thicker SiO2/ZnO NPs moderated the toxicity of ZnO NPs by restricting free radical formation and the release of zinc ions, and decreasing surface contact with cells.
