Caring efficacy: nurses' perceptions and relationships with work-related factors

Psychometric properties of the Caring Efficacy Scale among personal care attendants working in residential aged care settings

OBJECTIVE

This study assessed the psychometric properties of the Caring Efficacy Scale (CES) among personal care attendants providing care to older residents in residential aged care settings.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study was completed in Australia in 2020-2021. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of the 30-item original CES (Model 1) and 28-item CES validated in registered nurses (Model 2) was conducted to assess the goodness of fit of these models in our study population. Due to unsatisfactory fit indices for both models, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted to examine the dimensionality and underlying structure of the original CES among personal care attendants. Internal consistency of the final scale and subscales identified was examined using item-total correlations and Cronbach's alpha coefficients.

RESULTS

Two hundred and eighty personal care attendants participated in the study. The model fit indices such as Comparative Fit Index and Tucker Lewis Index of both models were less than 0.90, while the Standardised Root Mean Square Residual and Root Mean Square of Approximation values were greater than or equal to 0.08 and 0.06, respectively. The EFA identified a two-factor structure, and 22 items of the 30 in the original scale were retained. Item-total correlations amongst items retained in the scale and subscales were greater than 0.3. Cronbach's alpha for the abbreviated scale was 0.85, with 0.83 and 0.79, respectively, for the two subscales.

CONCLUSIONS

The modified CES can be used as a robust tool to assess the self-efficacy of personal care attendants in providing care to older residents in residential aged care settings.

Relationship between Nurses Reflection, Self-efficacy and Work Engagement: A Multicenter Study

Introduction

Reflection is considered an essential element in nurses' practice with different positive outcomes, we decided to determine the level of nurses' reflection and then assess the relationship between nurses' reflection with their self-efficacy and work engagement.

Methods

In this cross-sectional study, a total of 240 nurses were selected from seven educational hospitals affiliated with Tabriz University of medical sciences (Iran). The stratified random sampling method was used to select the participants from hospitals. Data were collected through three questionnaires including Groningen Reflection Ability Scale (GRAS), Sherer's General Self-Efficacy Scale (SGSES), and Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES). Data were analyzed using SPSS version 13.

Results

According to the results, the mean (SD) score of nurses' reflection was calculated as 86.51 (8.17) out of 115. The mean (SD) score of nurses' self-efficacy was 60.89 (11.11) out of 85. Moreover, the mean (SD) total score of nurses' work engagement in a possible range of 0 to 6 was 3.39 (1.36). There was a positive and significant relationship between the total reflection score with work engagement and self-efficacy scores.

Conclusion

According to the results, nurses working in different units showed different scores of reflection. Moreover, the results of the present study showed that nurses' reflection is associated with nurses' work engagement and self-efficacy. Therefore, nurse managers and nurse educators should improve nurses' skills in reflection and they should support the reflective practice in clinical settings.

Psychometric properties of the quality nursing care scale-turkish version: a methodological study

AIM

To analyze the psychometric properties of the Quality Nursing Care Scale in Turkish Language.

BACKGROUND

The quality of health services and nursing care effectively improves safe patient outcomes and reduces costs in healthcare organizations. There is a need for valid and reliable tools in order to use for evaluating the quality of nursing care.

METHODS

The methodological and cross-sectional study included 225 nurses working in a research and training hospital. Content validity, construct validity, item analysis, and internal consistency analysis were used.

RESULTS

The content validity index of the scale was 0.96. The item-total score correlation values of the items were 0.72 and higher. The factor loads of the items ranged from 0.42 to 0.90. Different from the original scale, Turkish form consisted of three sub-dimensions. The fit indices were acceptable or very good. The Cronbach's alpha internal consistency coefficient was 0.99.

CONCLUSION

The Quality Nursing Care Scale was valid and reliable with its three-factor structure in Turkish Language. It may be used for measuring the quality of care in the aspects of nurses.

Pediatric Ward Nurses' Caring Self-Efficacy Scale: Development and Validation

BACKGROUND

No instrument specifically designed to investigate the caring self-efficacy of nurses in pediatric wards was found. The aim of the present study was therefore to develop a scale to evaluate pediatric wards nurse's caring self-efficacy.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In this study, an exploratory, sequential, mixed method was used in 2015 in Iran. Data collected from 27 semi-structured interviews with nurses in pediatric wards were analyzed using conventional content analysis. The initial version of the scale was obtained with 65 items. Face validity was determined using impact score and content validity using the Content Validity Index (CVI) and Content Validity Ratio (CVR). The construct validity of the scale was investigated using exploratory factor analysis with 305 nurses in pediatric wards. The concurrent validity of the scale was acquired using the General Self-Efficacy Scale. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were also examined.

RESULTS

The scale-CVI (S-CVI) (average) was 0.85. The 14 items with a CVR and CVI of less than 0.51 and 0.70, respectively, were deleted and the final 51-item scale was approved. All 51 items had good impact score (>1.50). In the final scale, four subscales were extracted using construct validity. The concurrent validity of the scale was also obtained (r = 0.77, p < 0.001). The total Cronbach's α correlation coefficient of the scale was 0.96 and test-retest reliability was 0.98.

CONCLUSIONS

The Pediatric Ward Nurses' Caring Self-Efficacy (PWNCSE) scale developed in this study is a practical, reliable, and valid scale to evaluate pediatric ward nurses' caring self-efficacy.

Applying the Carolina care model to improve nurses' humanistic care abilities

PURPOSE

To study the application of the Carolina Care Model to improve nurses' humanistic care abilities in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

METHODS

From December 2019 to April 2020, 40 nursing staff and 80 patients in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in our hospital were recruited as the study cohort and randomly placed in an intervention group or a control group. The intervention group underwent the Carolina Care Model to complete the clinical nursing work. The control group underwent hospital routines to complete clinical nursing work.

RESULTS

After the training, the humanistic care ability scores and the scores of various dimensions in the intervention group were significantly higher than the scores in the control group (P<0.05). The patient care perception scores in the intervention group were higher than they were in the control group (P<0.05). The patients' nursing satisfaction scores in the intervention group were significantly higher than they were in the control group (P<0.05).

CONCLUSION

Carrying out a humanistic care nursing practice based on the Carolina Care Model can improve the humanistic care abilities of the nurses in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, patient care perception and satisfaction, and the quality of the nursing service.
