Dynamical Properties and Conceptual Interpretation of Latent Change Score Models

Imagining a better world: assessing the immediate and delayed effects of imagined contact on attitudes toward refugees in elementary school

Introduction

Preparing host-society children for contact with refugees coming into their classes poses a new and important challenge for countries with little prior experience in integration. Imagined contact is a prejudice-reduction intervention that can be particularly useful in this context. However, its long-term effects and potential age-related variations in its efficacy among primary school children remain understudied.

Methods

This study investigated the short-term and long-term effects of an imagined contact school intervention on the change in attitudes and contact intentions of 1,544 children aged 7-15. Of these, 827 participated in a four-session-long intervention delivered by their teachers within their regular classes, while 717 served as a comparison group. Short-term effects were assessed approximately one week after the last intervention session, with long-term effects evaluated around two and a half months later.

Results

Our findings indicate that the imagined contact intervention instigates positive changes in intergroup attitudes and contact intentions in both the short term and long term, but only for the children in the lower grades of primary school.

Discussion

While the durability of these effects among younger participants holds promise for future use of imagined contact in schools, we also scrutinize potential developmental and methodological explanations of the absence of expected intervention effects among older children.

Disentangling the trajectories of maternal depressive symptoms and partnership problems in the transition to parenthood and their impact on child adjustment difficulties

Maternal perinatal depression (PND) and partnership problems have been identified to influence the development of later child adjustment difficulties. However, PND and partnership problems are closely linked which makes it difficult to draw conclusions about the exact transmission pathways. The aim of the present study was to investigate to what extent PND symptoms and partnership problems influence each other longitudinally and to examine the influence of their trajectories on child adjustment difficulties at the age of three. Analyses were based on publicly available data from the German family panel "pairfam". N = 354 mothers were surveyed on depressive symptoms and partnership problems annually from pregnancy (T0) until child age three (T4). Child adjustment difficulties were assessed at age three. Results of latent change score modeling showed that partnership problems predicted change in PND symptoms at T0 and T3 while PND symptoms did not predict change in partnership problems. Child adjustment difficulties at age three were predicted by PND symptoms, but not by partnership problems. Partnership problems predicted externalizing, but not internalizing symptoms. Results underline the effects of family factors for the development of child adjustment difficulties and emphasize the importance of early interventions from pregnancy onwards.

A Latent Change Score Approach to Understanding Chronic Bodily Pain Outcomes Following Knee Arthroplasty: A Secondary Analysis of Longitudinal Data

BACKGROUND

The extent to which chronic bodily pain changes following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is unknown. We determined the extent of chronic bodily pain changes at 1 year following TKA.

METHODS

Data from our randomized trial of pain coping skills, which revealed no effect of the studied interventions, were used. The presence and severity of chronic pain in 16 body regions, excluding the surgically treated knee, were determined prior to and 1 year following surgery. The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) pain scale was used to quantify the extent of surgical knee pain. Latent change score (LCS) models were used to determine the extent to which true chronic bodily pain scores change after TKA.

RESULTS

The mean age of the sample of 367 participants was 63.4 ± 8.0 years, and 247 (67%) were female. LCS analyses showed significant 20% to 54% reductions in pain in the surgically treated lower limb (not including the surgically treated knee), pain in the non-surgically treated lower limb, and whole body pain. In bivariate LCS analyses, greater improvement in the WOMAC pain score, indicating surgical benefit of TKA, led to greater improvement in all 4 bodily pain areas beyond the surgically treated knee, even after controlling for the latent change in pain catastrophizing.

CONCLUSIONS

Clinically important chronic bodily pain reductions occurred following TKA and may be causally linked to the surgical procedure. Reduction in chronic bodily pain in sites other than the surgically treated knee is an additional benefit of TKA.

Demystifying longitudinal data analyses using structural equation models in school psychology

Structural equation models (SEM) are a method of latent variable analysis that offer a high degree of flexibility in terms of modeling methods for applied research questions. Recent advancements associated with longitudinal SEM have unlocked innovative ways to decompose variance and to estimate mean trends over time (e.g., Allison et al., 2017; Berry & Willoughby, 2017; Hamaker et al., 2015; McArdle & Nesselroade, 2014). However, these longitudinal methods are not necessarily readily accessible to scholars seeking to advance theory and practice in school psychology. Importantly, not all longitudinal data are the same and not all longitudinal SEMs are the same; thus, analytic approaches must be appropriately matched to specific research aims to meaningfully inform school psychology theory and practice. The present article highlights recent advances in longitudinal SEMs, clarifies their similarities to other-perhaps more familiar-methods, and matches their applications to specific types of research questions. The intent of this work is to promote careful thinking about the correspondence between estimands, developmental theory, and practical applications to foster specificity in testing quantitative questions in school psychology research and advance a more rigorous evaluation of longitudinal trends relevant to research and practice in the field.

The Relationship Between Negative Affect, State Mindfulness, and the Role of Personality

Objectives

Are affective states influencing state mindfulness and can this explain the link between personality and mindfulness? Mindfulness is commonly thought to decrease negative affect, but a number of studies have reported reductions in mindfulness in negative affect situations. This highlights a potential mechanism explaining previously observed negative relationships between individual differences such as Neuroticism and mindfulness, via their shared relationship with negative affect.

Methods

In an experiment, 331 participants were exposed to a negative affect stimulus to investigate whether previously established relationships between Neuroticism, Behavioral Inhibition, and Mindfulness are due to differences in negative affect reactivity. It was expected that participants high on Neuroticism and Behavioral Inhibition to show greater negative affect reactivity which in turn would reduce their state Non-Judgmental Acceptance and Acting with Awareness.

Results

While change in negative affect was related to lower Non-Judgmental Acceptance and Acting with Awareness, negative affect reactivity did not mediate the relationship between Neuroticism/BIS and these state mindfulness facets. Importantly, only Non-Judgmental Acceptance and Acting with Awareness facets of mindfulness were affected by negative affect change, but not Attention. This indicates that greater negative affect might require allocation of cognitive resources to stress-related processes such as threat monitoring, reducing mindful emotion processing but not attention.

Conclusions

The current study found that situational mindfulness might be influenced by state affect highlighting the need to more strongly consider the environmental factors which can shape affect in mindfulness interventions.

lcsm: An R package and tutorial on latent change score modelling

Latent change score models (LCSMs) are used across disciplines in behavioural sciences to study how constructs change over time. LCSMs can be used to estimate the trajectory of one construct (univariate) and allow the investigation of how changes between two constructs (bivariate) are associated with each other over time. This paper introduces the R package lcsm, a tool that aims to help users understand, analyse, and visualise different latent change score models. The lcsm package provides functions to generate model syntax for basic univariate and bivariate latent change score models with different model specifications. It is also possible to visualise different model specifications in simplified path diagrams. An interactive application illustrates the main functions of the package and demonstrates how the model syntax and path diagrams change based on different model specifications. This R package aims to increase the transparency of reporting analyses and to provide an additional resource to learn latent change score modelling.
