Bibliometrics Analysis of the Research Status and Trends of the Association Between Depression and Insulin From 2010 to 2020

Mapping the landscape of research on insulin resistance: a visualization analysis of randomized clinical trials

BACKGROUND

Insulin resistance, a condition in which cells do not respond adequately to insulin, plays a crucial role in diabetes and related metabolic disorders. Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) explore interventions to manage insulin resistance, contributing to evidence-based medical progress. The current study aimed to analyze the global research landscape and trends in RCTs targeting insulin resistance.

METHODS

This study used bibliometric analysis and data visualization to examine RCT publications on insulin resistance from 2003 to 2022. The Scopus database was used due to its comprehensive coverage. The search strategy involved combining terms related to insulin resistance with RCT-related terms. The search query was validated, and core bibliometric indicators were used to analyze publication growth, origin, productivity, quality, and citations.

RESULTS

Between 2003 and 2022, 1077 RCT-focused publications on insulin resistance were identified from a pool of 24,932 related articles. The growth followed two phases, with a significant increase after 2008. The USA (n = 308; 28.60%), Iran (n = 165; 15.32%), China (n = 110; 10.21%), and the UK (n = 92; 8.54%) were the main contributors. The active institutions included Tehran University of Medical Sciences (n = 38; 3.53%) and Harvard Medical School (n = 31; 2.88%). Prominent funding agencies include the National Institutes of Health (n = 88; 8.17%) and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (n = 86; 7.99%). The top journals included the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (n = 44; 4.09%) and Diabetes Care (n = 35; 3.25%). Co-occurrence analysis revealed three clusters addressing "utilizing lipid panels as indicators of insulin resistance," "analyzing the impact of diet composition and physical activity on insulin sensitivity among obese individuals," and "exploring insulin resistance in cases of polycystic ovary syndrome."

CONCLUSIONS

This comprehensive bibliometric analysis highlights the global research landscape and trends in RCTs targeting insulin resistance. Research on lipid panels, diet impact, and insulin resistance in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome will continue to be a hotspot. The findings offer valuable information on research priorities, international collaborations, and impactful publications. This study provides a foundation for future directorial investigations in this critical area of metabolic health.

Bibliometric and visual analysis of Kawasaki disease in children from 2012 to 2022

Background

In recent years, the incidence of Kawasaki disease among the pediatric population has experienced a significant increase. With complications mainly affecting the cardiovascular system, Kawasaki disease has received widespread attention from scholars worldwide. Numerous articles on Kawasaki disease in children have been published far. However, there is a lack of studies that use visualization methods to perform a bibliometric analysis of the relevant literature. This study aims to obtain overall information on the output characteristics of publications on childhood Kawasaki disease between 2012 and 2022 through bibliometric analysis, identify research hotspots and frontiers, and provide new ideas and references for future clinical and scientific research.

Methods

Literature meeting the inclusion criteria was screened from the Web of Science Core Collection, PubMed, and Scopus databases. Visual analysis of the literature by country, institution, journal, author, keywords, and references was performed using Citespace (6.1.R6), VOSviewer (1.6.18), and the online bibliometric website (https://bibliometric.com/).

Results

A total of 4,867 eligible publications were included. The number of annual publications is generally rising, rapidly increasing since 2019. Among countries and institutions, China and KAOHSIUNG CHANG GUNG MEMORIAL HOSPITAL have the highest output of articles. With 104 publications, Ho-Chang Kuo has a high impact in the field of KD. The most cited author is Jane W. Newburger. The most prolific journal is FRONTIERS IN PEDIATRICS. CIRCULATION is the most frequently co-cited journal. The most popular keyword in frequency and centrality is "immunoglobulin". The reference with the highest burst intensity was Verdoni L, LANCET, 2020.

Conclusion

Kawasaki disease in children remains a hot topic among pediatricians worldwide and is receiving increasing attention. We innovated the "national-institutional-journal" model, which promotes further international cooperation in this field. The hot topics in the field of pediatric KD are "KD pathogenesis", "immunoglobulin resistance and complementary therapy", and "cardiovascular complications". Frontiers include disease-related ("multisystem inflammatory syndrome", "coronavirus disease 2019", "hypotension"), treatment-related ("procalcitonin", " anakinra"), and pathogenesis ("polymerase chain reaction").

Microglial NLRP3 inflammasome activation mediates diabetes-induced depression-like behavior via triggering neuroinflammation

BACKGROUND

Abundant evidence suggests that the prevalence and risk of depression in people with diabetes is high. However, the pathogenesis of diabetes-related depression remains unclear. Since neuroinflammation is associated with the pathophysiology of diabetic complications and depression, this study aims to elucidate the neuroimmune mechanism of diabetes-related depression.

METHODS

Male C57BL/6 mice were injected with streptozotocin to establish a diabetes model. After screening, diabetic mice were treated with the NLRP3 inhibitor MCC950. Then, metabolic indicators and depression-like behaviors were evaluated in these mice, as well as their central and peripheral inflammation. To explore the mechanism of high glucose-induced microglial NLRP3 inflammasome activation, we performed in vitro studies focusing on its canonical upstream signal I (TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB) and signal II (ROS/PKR/P₂X₇R/TXNIP).

RESULTS

Diabetic mice exhibited depression-like behaviors and activation of NLRP3 inflammasome in hippocampus. In vitro high-glucose (50 mM) environment primed microglial NLRP3 inflammasome by promoting NF-κB phosphorylation in a TLR4/MyD88-independent manner. Subsequently, high glucose activated the NLRP3 inflammasome via enhancing intracellular ROS accumulation, upregulating P₂X₇R, as well as promoting PKR phosphorylation and TXNIP expression, thereby facilitating the production and secretion of IL-1β. Inhibition of NLRP3 with MCC950 significantly restored hyperglycemia-induced depression-like behavior and reversed the increase in IL-1β levels in the hippocampus and serum.

CONCLUSION

The activation of NLRP3 inflammasome, probably mainly in hippocampal microglia, mediates the development of depression-like behaviors in STZ-induced diabetic mice. Targeting the microglial inflammasome is a feasible strategy for the treatment of diabetes-related depression.

Drug-Induced Cardiotoxicity in Children During the Past 30 Years: A Bibliometric Study and Visualization Analysis

BACKGROUND Drug-induced cardiotoxicity (DICT) is one of the most serious adverse drug reactions, which is an important safety issue in drug development and clinical practice. This study aimed to summarize the knowledge structure and to detect emerging trends, and provide ideas for future research on DICT in children using bibliometric methods. MATERIAL AND METHODS All publications on DICT in children were retrieved through the Web of Science Core Collection up to April 20, 2022. The document type was restricted to articles with the language set to English. CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used to conduct this bibliometric analysis. RESULTS A total of 298 articles were included, and the annual publications decreased since 2021. The United States was the leading country with the most publications (117), the highest centrality (0.39), and total citations (4055). The most influential institution was the University of British Columbia, while Carleton BC and Rassekh SR, both from Canada, were the most productive authors, but there was no leader in this field. The keywords with both high frequency and high centrality after excluding "cardiotoxicity" and "children" were acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Freq=43, Central=0.15), childhood cancer (Freq=42, Central=0.13), toxicity (Freq=33, Central=0.16), and breast cancer (Freq=29, Central=0.19). "Adriamycin cardiotoxicity" was the first burst keyword, while "childhood cancer", "oxidative stress", and "cardiac dysfunction" were emerging research hotspots. CONCLUSIONS Attention to DICT in children was insufficient. This study serves as a breakthrough point, providing a comprehensive overview of the knowledge structure, development landscape, and future opportunities in this field.

Research hotspots and trends in visceral pain research: A global comprehensive bibliometric analysis

Background

Visceral pain is a complex and heterogeneous disorder that is considered more prominent compared to somatic pain, due to its multiple and complex causes and accompanying emotional and mood disorders. Research has become increasingly extensive over the years, but a bibliometric analysis of this field is lacking. The aim of this study was to analyze global research trends in visceral pain over the past 40 years through visual analysis.

Methods

We conducted a comprehensive search of the literature from January 1981 to December 2021 using the Web of Science core database. The medical subject term 'visceral pain' was searched. We used CiteSpace and VOSviewer for bibliometric analysis and network visualization, including top-ranked authors, keywords, research collaborations, and literature co-occurrence network analysis.

Results

A total of 5,047 articles were included in the analysis. The number of articles on visceral pain has continued to grow steadily over the past 40 years. The United States (1,716 articles), University of California (159 articles), and Neurogastroenterology and Motility (276 articles) were the country, institution, and journal with the most publications, respectively. Keyword analysis showed that inflammation, visceral hypersensitivity, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), anxiety, and quality of life were the research trends and priorities in this research field.

Conclusion

Visceral pain-related research has received increasing attention in recent decades. However, there are still many unresolved issues in the field of visceral pain, such as the specific molecular mechanisms and clinical treatments between visceral pain and inflammation, IBD, IBS, anxiety, and quality of life, which may require further exploration based on modern scientific and technological means and more basic research, especially for the therapeutic targets of visceral pain, which may become a hot spot for future research and provide guidance for the treatment of clinical diseases related to visceral pain.

Global research progress of visceral hypersensitivity and irritable bowel syndrome: bibliometrics and visualized analysis

Background: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a group of functional intestinal disorders characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits, and/or stool characteristics. Recent studies have shown that there has been a significant advancement in the study of visceral hypersensitivity in IBS. Through the use of bibliometrics, this study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the knowledge structure and research hotpots of visceral hypersensitivity in IBS. Methods: Publications related to visceral hypersensitivity in IBS from 2012 to 2022 were searched on the web of science core collection (WoSCC) database. CiteSpace.6.1. R2 and Vosviewer 1.6.17 were used to perform bibliometric analysis. Results: A total of 974 articles led by China and the United States from 52 countries were included. Over the past decade, the number of articles on visceral hypersensitivity and IBS has steadily increased year by year. China, the United States, and Belgium are the main countries in this field. Univ Oklahoma, Univ Gothenburg, and Zhejiang University are the main research institutions. Simren, Magnus, Greenwood-van meerveld, Beverley, and Tack, Jan are the most published authors in this research field. The research on the causes, genes, and pathways involved in visceral hypersensitivity in IBS and the mechanism of IBS are the main topics and hotspots in this field. This study also found that gut microbiota may be related to the occurrence of visceral hypersensitivity, and probiotics may be a new method for the treatment of visceral hypersensitivity and pain, which may become a new direction for research in this field. Conclusion: This is the first bibliometric study to comprehensively summarize the research trends and developments of visceral hypersensitivity in IBS. This information provides the research frontier and hot topics in this field in recent years, which will provide a reference for scholars studying this field.

Global research trends on the links between insulin resistance and obesity: a visualization analysis

Background

Obesity increases the chance of developing insulin resistance. Numerous inflammatory markers have been linked to an increased risk of insulin resistance in obese individuals. Therefore, we performed a bibliometric analysis to determine global research activity and current trends in the field of obesity and insulin resistance.

Methods

Scopus was used between 2002 and 2021 to retrieve publications related to terms related to obesity and insulin resistance. Data were exported to Microsoft Excel. Additionally, we use VOSviewer software to create visualization maps that describe international collaborations and research hotspots.

Results

We identified 6626 publications, including 5754 journal articles, 498 review articles, and 109 letters to the editor. The most productive countries were the United States (n = 995, 30.11%), followed by China (n = 650, 9.81%), Italy (n = 412, 6.22%) and Spain (n = 386, 5.83%). Previously to 2012, this field was mainly focused on ‘adipocyte dysfunctions that link obesity with insulin resistance”; and ‘relationship between obesity, insulin resistance, and risk of cardiovascular disease’. ‘Supplements improve insulin sensitivity‘, and ‘obesity-induced inflammation and insulin resistance’ were found more recently (after 2014), indicating that research in this field has acquired significant interest and emphasis in recent years.

Conclusions

This is the first bibliometric study to focus on publications related to insulin resistance and obesity at the global level. Our reporting of quantifiable knowledge in this field may be useful in providing evidence and direction for future research, clinical practice, and educational initiatives.

Mapping the global research landscape on insulin resistance: Visualization and bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND

Insulin resistance is a risk factor for metabolic syndromes and is associated with a wide variety of metabolic illnesses, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

AIM

To investigate and map global insulin resistance studies.

METHODS

A bibliometric methodology was applied to the literature retrieved from the Scopus database and Reference Citation Analysis (https://www.referencecitationanalysis.com) by using a validated search strategy. The study period was limited from 2002 to 2021. Bibliometric indicators and mapping were presented.

RESULTS

A total of 26808 articles on the topic of insulin resistance were included in the Scopus database. The articles included research articles (n = 21918; 81.76%), review articles (n = 2641; 9.85%), and letters (n = 653; 2.44%). During the study period, 136 countries contributed to the research on insulin resistance. The highest number of articles was from the United States (n = 7360; 27.45%), followed by China (n = 3713; 13.85%), Japan (n = 1730, 6.45%), Italy (n = 1545; 5.54%), and the United Kingdom (n = 1484; 5.54%). The retrieved articles identified two main research themes: “inflammatory mechanisms in the regulation of insulin resistance” and “mechanisms linking obesity to insulin resistance”.

CONCLUSION

Our data show that insulin resistance has steadily gained interest from researchers, as evidenced by the number of citations and yearly publications. Publications have grown significantly in the last decade, while low-income countries with greater burdens continue to produce fewer publications in this field. This approach might assist researchers in choosing new research areas and recognizing research hotspots and frontiers. In the future, perhaps high-quality clinical evidence will be acquired.

Global trends in research on irritable bowel syndrome and the brain–gut axis: Bibliometrics and visualization analysis

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a gastrointestinal disorder with no structural damage, and its pathogenesis remains unclear. Studies have shown that the brain–gut axis is closely related to the occurrence of IBS. However, studies of IBS related to the brain–gut axis have not been systematically analyzed by bibliometrics and visual analysis. This study is based on 631 publications in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) to analyze hot spots and trends in this field. The collaborations between different authors, institutions, countries, and keywords were bibliometrically analyzed by CiteSpace software. Meanwhile, VOSviewer analyzed the references. The results show that since 2012, the number of publications has been growing rapidly. According to the collaborative network analysis, the United States, the National University of Ireland, Cork, and J.F. Cryan are the countries, institutions, and authors contributing the most, respectively. Through keywords and literature analysis, mechanisms and therapy associated with IBS and the brain–gut axis have still been a research focus in recent years. Furthermore, the physiological and pathological mechanisms of the brain–gut axis influencing IBS (related to gastrointestinal dysfunction, vagus nerve, visceral pain, intestinal flora, serotonin, tryptophan metabolism, stress, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and malonyldialdehyde) are the future research trends, especially the mechanisms related to intestinal flora. This is the first bibliometric and visualization analysis of IBS and brain–gut axis-related literature to explore research hotspots and trends.

Epilepsy With Suicide: A Bibliometrics Study and Visualization Analysis via CiteSpace

Objective:

The purpose of this study was to analyze the research status of epilepsy with suicide and to determine the hotspots and frontiers via CiteSpace.

Method:

We searched the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) for studies related to epilepsy and suicide from inception to September 30, 2021. We used CiteSpace to generate online maps of collaboration between countries, institutions, and authors, and revealed hot spots and frontiers in epilepsy with suicide.

Results:

A total of 631 publications related to epilepsy with suicide were retrieved from the WoSCC. Andres M. Kanner was the most published author (25 papers). The USA and Columbia University were the leading country and institution in this field, with 275 and 25 papers, respectively. There were active cooperation between institutions, countries, and authors. Hot topics focused on depression, antiseizure medications, pediatric epilepsy, and risk factors of suicide in patients with epilepsy (PWEs).

Conclusions:

Based on the CiteSpace findings, this study detected active collaboration among countries, institutions and authors. The main current research trends include suicide caused by depression, suicide caused by the use of antiseizure medications, suicide in children with epilepsy, and risk factors for suicide in PWEs. Thus, more attention should be paid to the psychiatric comorbidity of PWEs (especially pediatric epilepsy), the suicidal tendency of PWEs, and the rational use of antiseizure medications in the future.

Mapping the structure of depression biomarker research: A bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND

Depression is a common mental disorder and the diagnosis is still based on the descriptions of symptoms. Biomarkers can reveal disease characteristics for diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. In recent years, many biomarkers relevant to the mechanisms of depression have been identified. This study uses bibliometric methods and visualization tools to analyse the literature on depression biomarkers and its hot topics, and research frontiers to provide references for future research.

METHODS

Scientific publications related to depression biomarkers published between 2009 and 2022 were obtained from the Web of Science database. The BICOMB software was used to extract high-frequency keywords and to construct binary word-document and co-word matrices. gCLUTO was used for bicluster and visual analyses of high-frequency keywords. Further graphical visualizations were generated using R, CiteSpace and VOSviewer software.

RESULTS

A total of 14,403 articles related to depression biomarkers were identified. The United States (34.81%) and China (15.68%), which together account for more than half of all publications, can be considered the research base for the field. Among institutions, the University of California, University of London, and Harvard University are among the top in terms of publication number. Three authors (Maes M, Penninx B.W.J.H., and Berk M) emerged as eminent researchers in the field. Finally, eight research hotspots for depression biomarkers were identified using reference co-citation analysis.

CONCLUSION

This study used bibliometric methods to characterize the body of literature and subject knowledge in the field of depression biomarker research. Among the core biomarkers of depression, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), cytokines, and oxidative stress are relatively well established; however, research on machine learning, metabolomics, and microRNAs holds potential for future development. We found "microRNAs" and "gut microbiota" to be the most recent burst terms in the study of depression biomarkers and the likely frontiers of future research.

The effect of high intensity interval training with beetroot (Beta vulgaris) juice supplementation on serotonin and dopamine receptors expression, anxiety and depression in middle-aged diabetic rats

Objective

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of four weeks of high intensity interval training (HIIT) with beetroot juice supplementation (BJ) on serotonin and dopamine receptors in hippocampal tissue, as well as anxiety and depression in middle-aged diabetic rats.

Materials and Methods

In this experimental study, 28 diabetic female rats (55 mg/kg, induced by streptozotocin) aged 12-14 months, weighing 280-320 g, were divided into (1) diabetic control (DC), (2) BJ, (3) HIIT, and (4) HIIT+BJ groups. Also, 7 healthy rats were included in the healthy control (HC) group to evaluate the effect of diabetes induction on the research variables. HIIT was performed for four weeks, 4 sessions per week (70-95% of maximum speed at high intensities; 50-60% of maximum speed at low intensities). Also, BJ was fed daily to rats at a dose of 10 ml/kg.

Results

Hippocampal expression of dopamine receptor-1 (Dop.R), 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor (5-HT. R), open arm entry percentage (OAE%) and movement rate in the HIIT, BJ and HIIT+BJ groups were significantly higher than the DC group. In the HIIT+BJ group, open arm time percentage (OAT%) was higher than the DC group. Levels of Dop.R gene expression were more affected by HIIT, and levels of 5-HT. R were more affected by BJ supplementation; also, HIIT+BJ had a synergistic effect on reducing anxiety and depression.

Conclusion

Although HIIT was more effective than BJ and HIIT+BJ on Dop.R and BJ supplementation on 5-HT.R and improved anxiety and depression, both of HIIT and BJ were complementary in improving dopamine and serotonin receptor-dependent anxiety and depression and enhanced each other's effects.

Bibliometric Analysis of the Scientific Literature on Rheumatoid Arthritis-Associated Interstitial Lung Disease

Background

In recent years, the number of studies on rheumatoid arthritis-related interstitial lung disease (RA-ILD) has been increasing, which has led to many publications on this topic. Our purpose is to identify research trends in RA-ILD and analyze the most-cited RA-ILD-related high-quality scientific publications.

Methods

All publications on RA-ILD in the Core Collection database of Web of Science were searched. The publication year, country, institution, total citations, and journal were extracted and analyzed. We used VOSviewer software or an online bibliometric analysis platform for cooccurrence analysis of the keywords, institutions, and countries involved. The 100 most frequently cited RA-ILD publications were analyzed.

Results

In total, 596 publications related to RA-ILD were obtained. Over time, the frequency of RA-ILD publications has increased. Globally, the United States provides the most publications on RA-ILD (n = 195). The institution with the highest publication output was the Mayo Clinic (n = 43). The journal “Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases” published most with 93 articles and received 338 citations. A clinical description was the most common research topic in RA-ILD-related publications.

Conclusions

In recent years, there has been an increasing number of studies on RA-ILD, and related publications have increased rapidly. This study is the first bibliometric study of RA-ILD-related publications. It can be used as a guide for clinicians and can help researchers choose research directions of interest in this field.
