Abstract
In the pursuit of enhancing food packaging, nanotechnology, particularly green silver nanoparticles (G-AgNPs), have gained prominence for its remarkable antimicrobial properties with high potential for food shelf-life extension. Our study aims to develop corn starch-based coating materials reinforced with G-AgNPs. The mechanical properties were examined using a uniaxial tensile tester, revealing that starch coated with the highest G-AgNPs concentration (12.75 ppm) exhibited UTS of 87.6 MPa compared to 48.48 MPa of control paper, a significant (p < 0.02) 65% increase. The assessment of the WVP showcased a statistical reduction in permeability by up to 8% with the incorporation of the hydrophobic layer. Furthermore, antibacterial properties were assessed following ISO 22196:2011, demonstrating a strong and concentration-dependent activity of G-AgNPs against E. coli. All samples successfully disintegrated in both simulated environments (soil and seawater), including samples presenting G-AgNPs. In the food trial analysis, the presence of starch and G-AgNPs significantly reduced weight loss after 6 days, with cherry tomatoes decreasing by 8.59% and green grapes by 6.77% only. The results of this study contribute to the advancement of environmentally friendly packaging materials, aligning with the UN sustainable development goals of reducing food waste and promoting sustainability.

Abstract
The prospective contribution of phyto-nanotechnology to the synthesis of silver nanomaterials for biomedical purposes is attracting increasing interest across the world. Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) through plants has been extensively examined recently, and it is now seen to be a green and efficient path for future exploitation and development of practical nano-factories. Fabrication of Ag-NPs is the process involves use of plant extracts/phyto-compounds (e.g.alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds) to synthesise nanoparticles in more economical and feasible. Several findings concluded that in the field of medicine, Ag-NPs play a major role in pharmacotherapy (infection and cancer). Indeed, they exhibits novel properties but the reason is unclear (except some theoretical interpretation e.g. size, shape and morphology). But recent technological advancements help to address these questions by predicting the unique properties (composition and origin) by characterizing physical, chemical and biological properties. Due to increased list of publications and their application in the field of agriculture, industries and pharmaceuticals, issues relating to toxicity are unavoidable and question of debate. The present reviews aim to find out the role of plant extracts to synthesise Ag-NPs. It provides an overview of various phytocompounds and their role in the field of biomedicine (antibacterial, antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory etc.). In addition, this review also especially focused on various applications such as role in infection, oxidative stress, application in medical engineering, diagnosis and therapy, medical devices, orthopedics, wound healing and dressings. Additionally, the toxic effects of Ag-NPs in cell culture, tissue of different model organism, type of toxic reactions and regulation implemented to reduce associated risk are discussed critically. Addressing all above explanations, this review focus on the detailed properties of plant mediated Ag-NPs, its impact on biology, medicine and their commercial properties as well as toxicity.

Abstract
Due to enhanced properties at the nanoscale, nanomaterials (NMs) have been incorporated into foods, food additives, and food packaging materials. Knowledge gaps related to (but not limited to) fate, transport, bioaccumulation, and toxicity of nanomaterials have led to an expedient need to expand research efforts in the food research field. While classical techniques can provide information on dilute suspensions, these techniques sample a low throughput of nanoparticles (NPs) in the suspension and are limited in the range of the measurement metrics so orthogonal techniques must be used in tandem to fill in measurement gaps. New and innovative characterization techniques have been developed and optimized for employment in food nano-characterization. Single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, a high-throughput nanoparticle characterization technique capable of providing vital measurands of NP-containing samples such as size distribution, number concentration, and NP evolution has been employed as a characterization technique in food research since its inception. Here, we offer a short, critical review highlighting existing studies that employ spICP-MS in food research with a particular focus on method validation and trends in sample preparation and spICP-MS methodology. Importantly, we identify and address areas in research as well as offer insights into yet to be addressed knowledge gaps in methodology.

Abstract
The blood circulation is considered the only way for the orally administered nanoparticles to enter the central nervous systems (CNS), whereas non-blood route-mediated nanoparticle translocation between organs is poorly understood. Here, we show that peripheral nerve fibers act as direct conduits for silver nanomaterials (Ag NMs) translocation from the gut to the CNS in both mice and rhesus monkeys. After oral gavage, Ag NMs are significantly enriched in the brain and spinal cord of mice with particle state however do not efficiently enter the blood. Using truncal vagotomy and selective posterior rhizotomy, we unravel that the vagus and spinal nerves mediate the transneuronal translocation of Ag NMs from the gut to the brain and spinal cord, respectively. Single-cell mass cytometry analysis revealed that enterocytes and enteric nerve cells take up significant levels of Ag NMs for subsequent transfer to the connected peripheral nerves. Our findings demonstrate nanoparticle transfer along a previously undocumented gut-CNS axis mediated by peripheral nerves.

Abstract
Metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) are becoming widespread environmental contaminants. They are currently added to several food preparations and cause a fast-growing concern for human health. The present work aims to assess the impact of zinc oxide (ZnO), titanium dioxide (TiO2), and silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) on the human gut metabolome and microbiome. Water samples spiked with two different concentrations of each MNPs were subjected to in-vitro gastrointestinal digestion and in-vitro large intestine fermentation. The effects of the treatments were determined through 16 S amplicon sequencing and untargeted metabolomics. Multi-omics data integration was then applied to correlate the two datasets. MNPs treatments modulated the microbial genera Bifidobacterium, Sutterella, Escherichia and Bacteroides. The treatments, especially the lower concentrations of Ag and ZnO, caused modulation of indole derivatives, peptides, and metabolites related to protein metabolism in the large intestine. Notably, these metabolites are implicated in ulcerative colitis and inflammatory bowel disease. TiO2 NPs treatment in all concentrations increased E.coli relative abundance and decreased the abundance of B. longum. Moreover, for TiO2, an enrichment in proinflammatory lipid mediators of arachidonic acid metabolites, such as prostaglandin E2 and leukotrienes B4, was detected. For all metals except TiO2, low NP concentrations promoted differentiated profiles, thus suggesting that MNPs aggregation can limit adverse effects on living cells.

Abstract
This study aims to provide information on the behaviour and biopersistence rate (BP) of metallic nanoparticles (Ag-NPs, TiO2-NPs, ZnO-NPs) naturally occurring in canned seafood and subjected to static in vitro digestion. Single particle ICP-MS analysis was performed to determine NPs distribution and concentrations in oral, gastric, and intestinal digests. Depending on the conditions of the digestive phase and the sample matrix, the phenomena of agglomeration and dispersion were highlighted and confirmed by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) technique. In standard suspensions, Ag-NPs had lower biopersistence (BP) than ZnO and TiO2-NPs (BP 34%, 89% and >100%, respectively). Among Ag-NPs and TiO2-NPs naturally present in the food matrix, those in canned tuna were more degradable than those in canned clam (BP Ag-NPs 36% vs. > 100%; BP TiO2-NPs 96% vs. > 100%), while BP ZnO-NPs showed high biopersistence in both seafood matrix (>100%). The biopersistence rates were higher than the recommended limit set by European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) (12%), referred to nanotechnologies to be applied in the food and feed chain, thus the investigated naturally occurring NPs cannot be considered readily degradable.

Abstract
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) and silver (Ag) NPs are among the most used engineered inorganic nanoparticles (NPs); however, their potential effects to marine demersal fish species, are not fully understood. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the proteomic alterations induced by sub-lethal concentrations citrate-coated 25 nm ("P25") TiO2 or polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) coated 15 nm Ag NPs to turbot, Scophthalmus maximus. Juvenile fish were exposed to the NPs through daily feeding for 14 days. The tested concentrations were 0, 0.75 or 1.5 mg of each NPs per kg of fish per day. The determination of NPs, Titanium and Ag levels (sp-ICP-MS/ICP-MS) and histological alterations (Transmission Electron Microscopy) supported proteomic analysis performed in the liver and kidney. Proteomic sample preparation procedure (SP3) was followed by LC-MS/MS. Label-free MS quantification methods were employed to assess differences in protein expression. Functional analysis was performed using STRING web-tool. KEGG Gene Ontology suggested terms were discussed and potential biomarkers of exposure were proposed. Overall, data shows that liver accumulated more elements than kidney, presented more histological alterations (lipid droplets counts and size) and proteomic alterations. The Differentially Expressed Proteins (DEPs) were higher in Ag NPs trial. The functional analysis revealed that both NPs caused enrichment of proteins related to generic processes (metabolic pathways). Ag NPs also affected protein synthesis and nucleic acid transcription, among other processes. Proteins related to thyroid hormone transport (Serpina7) and calcium ion binding (FAT2) were suggested as biomarkers of TiO2 NPs in liver. For Ag NPs, in kidney (and at a lower degree in liver) proteins related with metabolic activity, metabolism of exogenous substances and oxidative stress (e.g.: NADH dehydrogenase and Cytochrome P450) were suggested as potential biomarkers. Data suggests adverse effects in turbot after medium/long-term exposures and the need for additional studies to validate specific biological applications of these NPs.

Abstract
Canned fish products are of great economic importance for many countries and are preferred by consumers due to their rich nutritional composition and beneficial health effects. The steps of canning process and formulation vary depending on the species processed and the desired end product. This work is an overview of the current research investigating the effects of canning process, several preprocessing treatments and formulation on the nutritional composition, sensory characteristics and microbial quality of the end product. Key findings of recent studies on health effects and potential risk factors associated with the consumption of canned fish products are presented. Moreover, the global demand for canned fish products is increasing due to the changing consumption behavior and healthy eating habits of consumers after the pandemic. This review summarizes the major challenges that need to be addressed for meeting the increasing demand for canned fish products. Finally, based on the findings of current studies reviewed, the perspectives and research gaps for canned fish products are stated.

Abstract
The use of nanoparticles (NPs) has surely grown in recent years due to their versatility, with a spectrum of applications that range from nanomedicine to the food industry. Recent research focuses on the development of NPs for the oral administration route rather than the intravenous one, placing the interactions between NPs and the intestine at the centre of the attention. This allows the NPs functionalization to exploit the different characteristics of the digestive tract, such as the different pH, the intestinal mucus layer, or the intestinal absorption capacity. On the other hand, these same characteristics can represent a problem for their complexity, also considering the potential interactions with the food matrix or the microbiota. This review intends to give a comprehensive look into three main branches of NPs delivery through the oral route: the functionalization of NPs drug carriers for systemic targets, with the case of insulin carriers as an example; NPs for the delivery of drugs locally active in the intestine, for the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases and colon cancer; finally, the potential concerns and side effects of the accidental and uncontrolled exposure to NPs employed as food additives, with focus on E171 (titanium dioxide) and E174 (silver NPs).

Abstract
The engineered silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been widely used in various food contact materials (FCMs) based on their antibacterial properties. This widespread use of nanosilver has, however, increased the risk of exposure of AgNPs to human due to their migration from FCMs causing a potential hazard present in foods. Therefore, it is important to establish a reliable and practical method for the detection of AgNPs in food matrices to support risk assessment on AgNPs exposure. Taking the examples of milk and AgNPs-containing breast milk storage bags, this study established an approach for size characterization and quantification of AgNPs in milk and evaluated the relevant silver migration, based on enzymatic digestion and the analysis by asymmetric flow field–flow fractionation (AF4) hyphenated with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS). No migration of AgNPs was found from breast milk storage bags under various simulated storage conditions as well as extreme scenarios. The suitability and reliability of this method were also validated by the determination of multiple parameters, including accuracy, repeatability, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), and recovery, for AF4-ICP-MS and SP-ICP-MS, respectively, with good and overall acceptable evaluation results obtained for all. The established and validated approach was demonstrated to be suitable for the characterization and quantitation of AgNPs in milk as well as the analysis of their migration from breast milk storage bags.

Abstract
The present study aims to give information regarding the quantification of ZnO-NPs in canned seafood, which may be intentionally or unintentionally added, and to provide a first esteem of dietary exposure. Samples were subjected to an alkaline digestion and assessment of ZnO-NPs was performed by the single particle ICP-MS technique. ZnO-NPs were found with concentrations range from 0.003 to 0.010 mg/kg and a size mean range from 61.3 and 78.6 nm. It was not observed a clear bioaccumulation trend according to trophic level and size of seafood species, although the mollusk species has slightly higher concentrations and larger size. The number of ZnO-NPs/g does not differ significantly among food samples, observing an average range of 5.51 × 106 - 9.97 × 106. Dissolved Zn determined with spICP-MS revealed comparable concentration to total Zn determined with ICP-MS in standard mode, confirming the efficiency of alkaline digestion on the extraction of the Zn. The same accumulation trend found for ZnO-NPs was observed more clearly for dissolved Zn. The ZnO-NPs intake derived from a meal does not differ significantly among seafood products and it ranges from 0.010 to 0.031 µg/kg b.w. in adult, and from 0.022 to 0.067 µg/kg b.w. in child. Conversely, the intake of dissolved Zn is significantly higher if it is assumed a meal of mollusks versus the fish products, with values of 109.3 µg/kg b.w. for adult and 240.1 µg/kg b.w. for child. Our findings revealed that ZnO-NPs have the potential to bioaccumulate in marine organisms, and seafood could be an important uptake route of ZnO-NPs. These results could be a first important step to understand the ZnO-NPs human dietary exposure, but the characterization and quantification of ZnO-NPs is necessary for a large number of food items.

Abstract
In this study, a first attempt for isolating and determining (characterising) background levels of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) in seaweed has been developed by using single particle inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS). Seaweeds were processed using an optimised ultrasound assisted extraction (UAE) procedure based on tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) before dilution and SP-ICP-MS analysis. The effect of the TMAH percentage in the extracting solution, as well as the volume of extracting solution and sonication (extraction) time, has been fully assessed. Additional experiments also showed that TiO2 NPs were quantitatively released from the seaweed matrix in one UAE step since the analysis of residues gave TiO2 NPs concentrations lower than the limit of quantification (LOQ) of the method. Validation of the method with 50 and 100 nm TiO2 NPs (10 μg L-1 as Ti) showed good analytical recovery (115% and 112% for 50 and 100 nm TiO2 NPs, respectively), and good reproducibility (2% for size and 16% for number of TiO2 NPs). Experiments regarding TiO2 NPs stability showed that the extracted NPs are stable since there were not changes on the number of TiO2 NPs and TiO2 NPs size distributions when exposing TiO2 NPs standards to the optimised extractive conditions.
