Nurses' experiences of the role of organizational and environmental factors in the development of love of the profession: a qualitative study

BACKGROUND

Love of the profession has significant relationship with nurses' job motivation and care quality. However, there is limited information about organizational and environmental factors affecting love of the profession among nurses.

AIM

This study aimed at exploring nurses' experiences of the role of organizational and environmental factors in the development of love of the profession.

METHODS

This qualitative study was conducted in 2020-2021 using the conventional content analysis approach. Participants were Fifteen Iranian nurses with deep love of the profession, nursing instructors, and nursing managers purposefully selected from different healthcare and academic settings in seven large cities of Iran. Data were gathered via semi-structured interviews and were analyzed via the conventional content analysis method proposed by Graneheim and Lundman.

RESULTS

Organizational and environmental factors affecting the development of love of the profession were grouped into three main categories: The social context of the profession (with two subcategories), family support (with two subcategories), and organizational health (with four subcategories). Subcategories were respectively historical context of the profession, the evolving context, emotional family support, instrumental family support, quality of interpersonal relationships in the organization, level of organizational justice, level of authority delegation to nurses, and level of organizational support.

CONCLUSION

Different organizational and environmental factors can affect nurses' love of the profession development. Improving public image of nursing, providing nurses with stronger support, improving organizational climate, and strengthening interpersonal relationships in healthcare settings are recommended to develop nurses' Love of the profession.

Perceptions of nurses on occupational health hazards and safety practices in Ditsobotla public hospitals in North West province

Background

Nurses are the backbone of the healthcare system. During the fulfilment of their duties and responsibilities, they experience various types of work-related risks, which harmfully affect their health and nursing quality.

Objectives

This study aimed to explore and describe perceptions of nurses on occupational health hazards and safety practices in Ditsobotla public hospitals of North West province.

Method

An exploratory, descriptive, qualitative research design was undertaken in this study. An explorative design allowed the researcher to identify key issues regarding nurses’ perceptions on occupational health hazards and safety practices using Donabedian structure, process and outcome. A total of 15 nurses of different categories participated in the study that formed four focus group discussions. Semi-structured focus group discussions of three to four participants were conducted until data saturation is obtained and at the point where no new themes from participants’ perceptions emerged. Creswell and Clark framework of data analysis was used to analyse data.

Results

Three major categories emerged during data analysis: nurse’s perception on occupational health hazards in the health settings, Donabedian framework on assessing the quality of care in relation to occupational health hazards and occupational health and safety (OHS) practices. Eight themes were identified.

Conclusion

Nurses’ perceived different occupational hazards that affect their normal duties and responsibility in the workplace. Future interventions such as training and education on OHS policy should be adopted to promote health and well-being of the staff.

Job satisfaction among physicians in secondary and tertiary medical care levels

To identify level of job satisfaction among physicians at secondary and tertiary care levels. Random sample of 450 secondary and 523 tertiary care physicians filled in structured questionnaire about job satisfaction. Among secondary care physicians, 37.4% had extra work compared with 16.1% of tertiary care workers. More than 87% of both groups reported exposure to work-related violence. Physicians reported somewhat satisfaction for general work condition, promotion and financial aspects, work activities, and total satisfaction score with significant differences between studied groups. Significantly higher tertiary care physicians reported satisfaction with relationship in work and supervision at work compared with secondary care workers. Job satisfaction was significantly affected by age in years, number of shifts per month, years of experience, gender, being single or ever married, and having extra work. There is moderate level of satisfaction with significant differences in relation to level of care.
