Ayurvedic evaluation and treatment of Covid 19: A Case Report

COVID-19 patients, with underlying comorbidities are observed to develop complications. Studies have shown that hypertension (one of the comorbidities) is a risk factor for patients with severe COVID-19. There have been more patients with hypertension among those who have died than among survivors. There is no proven treatment of COVID-19 as of now. Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, has permitted use of traditional systems of medicine for treating mild to moderate cases of COVID-19. In line with this, there are few case reports which show promising results for treatment of COVID-19 with Ayurveda treatment module. These treatment reports highlight subdued COVID-19 infection without developing serious complications. Case in the paper is of a young hypertensive female patient with fever, weakness, anosmia, tastelessness and severe myalgia who was diagnosed with COVID-19. Ayurvedic assessment for this was Kaphavataj jwara. The patient sought Ayurvedic treatment. She was advised with treatment module including medicines, diet and behavioral interventions. Though patient was having comorbid hypertension with major COVID-19 symptoms, tested negative and recovered with exclusive Ayurvedic treatment. The patient was recovered both physically as well as psychologically with no post COVID-19 complications so far. Ayurvedic treatment module appears to be safe and efficacious with early recovery and better outcomes.

Quality Assessment of Sitopaladi Churna Using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography Coupled with Multivariate Analysis

"Sitopaladi churna," a well-known formulation of Ayurveda, is prescribed to treat the disease like Bronchitis, Pneumonia, allergic conditions, viral infection of the respiratory tract and as a natural antioxidant. A novel method based on reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) coupled to photodiode array detector was established and validated for sitopaladi churna. Here, HPLC fingerprints data obtained for 28 samples including standard sample were then treated to chemometric analysis like principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering analysis for further analysis to evaluate the differences in market samples of sitopaladi churna. Additionally, one major marker compound, piperine was quantified and it also facilitated for relative retention time. The simulative mean spectrum was also generated. The validation results showed that the developed method was simple, precise and stable. Thus, the developed chromatographic method adjoined with multivariate analysis can be used as an efficient and practical approach for quality assessment of sitopaladi churna.

Exploring the phytochemical and nutraceutical potentials of dasapatrachurnam

BackgroundDasapatrachurnam (DPC), a multicurative powder prepared from the leaves of 10 green leafy vegetables, was developed recently with known ethnobotanical and ethnopharmacological significance. However, its functional role in curing a disease is not yet scientifically proven. The present study aims at performing the phytochemical screening of DPC and exploring its possible activity as bacteriostatic, antineoplastic and anti-inflammatory. MethodsWe performed qualitative and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to find out the presence of active compounds and tested the bacteriostatic activity in four bacterial strains namely Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus by agar well diffusion method. We further explored the antineoplastic activity in vitro in C6 and HEK293 cell lines by cell viability assay and the anti-inflammatory activity in the ovalbumin-induced inflammation in male Wistar rats. ResultsDPC showed 60% solubility in PBS and showed the presence of flavonoids and glycosides. FTIR results indicated the presence of alkyl, ketone and aldehyde groups. The bacteriostatic activity of DPC was higher (60%) in E.coli and lower (8%) in S.aureus, when compared to streptomycin. The anti-cancerous activity of DPC in C6 and HEK293 cancer cells was similar to their respective positive controls, curcumin and camptothecin. The anti-inflammatory activity of DPC was more evident with local administration in all the parameters studied in brain hippocampus, kidney, liver and spleen in ovalbumin-induced rats. ConclusionOur results, for the first time, suggest the potentiality of the DPC in treating bacterial diseases, cancer and also inflammation. Our results also suggest the possible therapeutic role of DPC in treating chronic kidney disease.
