Asymptomatic Colonic Anisakiasis: Is It So Rare?

Most cases of anisakiasis occur in the stomach. Colonic anisakiasis, especially when asymptomatic, is extremely rare. We report a case of asymptomatic colonic anisakiasis and present a literature review of cases of colonic anisakiasis. A 52-year-old man underwent colonoscopy for colorectal cancer screening. Although no colorectal neoplasm was found, an Anisakis larva was detected in the transverse colon and the larva was removed by grasping forceps. Our review of PubMed revealed that 40% of cases of colonic anisakiasis are asymptomatic. We conclude that asymptomatic colonic anisakiasis may not be as rare as conventionally assumed.

Epidemiology and management of foodborne nematodiasis in the European Union, systematic review 2000-2016

BACKGROUND

Foodborne nematodiasis are caused by the ingestion of food contaminated by helminths. In Europe, these diseases are present in all countries.

OBJECTIVES

To review the available data on epidemiology and management of foodborne nematodiasis in the European Union, detect any trends and determine the possible causes of the observed changes.

METHODS

A review of available literature published between 2000 and 2016 was conducted.

RESULTS

Out of 1523 cases described in the literature, 1493 cases were autochthonous and 30 cases were imported. The detected parasites were Toxocara spp (34.7%), Ascaris lumbricoides (27.1%), Trichinella spp (21.9%), Anisakis spp (15.5%) and Angiostrongylus cantonensis (0.8%).

CONCLUSIONS

Foodborne nematodiasis remains a public health challenge for the European Union. Autochthonous cases of nematodiasis present the greatest health risk within the European Union. Foodborne nematodes due to lack of hygiene in food processing are diseases that can be avoided by increasing.

Asymptomatic anisakiasis of the colon incidentally diagnosed and treated during colonoscopy by retroflexion in the ascending colon

A 74-year-old man with diabetes underwent colonoscopy as routine screening for colon cancer. An Anisakis larva was found incidentally during colonoscopy using the retroflexion technique in the ascending colon, and was removed using a forceps. Asymptomatic colonic anisakiasis is very rare, and few reports have described diagnosis and treatment of anisakiasis during colonoscopy by the retroflexion technique in the ascending colon. We have reported this rare case along with a literature review.

Common Symptoms from an Uncommon Infection: Gastrointestinal Anisakiasis

Clinicians can be forgiven for thinking of anisakiasis as a rare condition low in the differential diagnosis of abdominal pain. Gastrointestinal anisakiasis is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by consumption of raw or undercooked seafood infected with nematodes of the genus Anisakis. Even though the reported cases indicate that this is a rare disease, the true incidence of the disease could be potentially higher than what is reported in the literature as cases can go undiagnosed. Diagnosis and treatment of gastric anisakiasis are made by a compatible dietary history, direct visualization, and removal of the larvae via gastroscopy. Serologic testing and imaging studies are useful in the diagnosis of intestinal anisakiasis and conservative management should be considered. This disease may mimic other diseases and lead to unnecessary surgery. This emphasizes the importance of suspecting gastrointestinal anisakiasis by history taking and by other diagnostic modalities.
