Abstract
Valence s electrons in alkali- or coinage-metal clusters are conceived to delocalize over the metal frameworks. The electrons occupy so-called superatomic orbitals (SAOs, i.e., 1S, 1P, 1D, 2S, 1F, ...), which provide an essential picture for understanding the size-dependent, unique properties of these metal clusters. While such electronic shells are unambiguously identified in their photoelectron spectra and supported by electronic structure calculations, characterization of SAOs in heteroatom-doped metal clusters has remained elusive as the doping significantly affects its energy levels and even alters the ordering of SAOs. Here, we present a photoelectron imaging study to explore SAOs formed in Sc-doped and undoped silver cluster anions, AgNSc- (N = 15, 16) and AgN- (N = 18, 19). Photoelectron angular distributions from their outermost SAOs are clearly visualized, whose characters are analyzed with the aid of density functional theory calculations. The present methodology enables us to explore not only the quantized energy levels but also the spatial distributions of SAOs formed in various metal cluster anions.

Abstract
The size dependent electronic structure and separate spin and orbital magnetic moments of free Co[Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]) cluster ions have been investigated by x-ray absorption and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy in a cryogenic ion trap. A very large orbital magnetic moment of [Formula: see text] per atom was determined for Co[Formula: see text], which is one order of magnitude larger than in the bulk metal. Large orbital magnetic moments per atom of ≈1 [Formula: see text] were also found for Co[Formula: see text], Co[Formula: see text], and Co[Formula: see text]. The orbital contribution to the total magnetic moment shows a non-monotonic cluster size dependence: The orbital contribution increases from a local minimum at n = 2 to a local maximum at n = 5 and then decreases with increasing cluster size. The 3d spin magnetic moment per atom is nearly constant and is solely defined by the number of 3d holes which shows that the 3d majority spin states are fully occupied, that is, 3d hole spin polarization is 100%.

Abstract
Abstract
Introduction: Hyperthermia (HT) is a non-invasive cancer therapy. Treatment temperature between 41°C to 44°C has no cytotoxic damage in normal cells, however shows cytotoxicity in cancer cells because of the underdeveloped vascular system. HT often used with other cancer therapy such as radiation therapy and chemotherapy. However mechanism of synergistic effect using these therapies remains unclear. Compared to 37°C, 42°C is mild heat stress for cells, thus superoxide anion is released from tissue. Superoxide anion is produced by mitochondrial electron transport chain. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), produced by mild heat stress, can be released from mitochondria. We have previously reported that ATP-binding cassette sub-family G member 2 (ABCG2) expression was suppressed by increasing mitochondrial ROS, and induction of the cancer specific porphyrin accumulation. ABCG2 is a transporter of doxorubicin (DOX), therefore we hypothesized that synergistic effect of HT and chemotherapy would be induced by down-regulation of ABCG2 expression via intracellular ROS increase. In this study, we investigated if cytotoxic effect of breast cancer cell using DOX can be enhance by HT via intracellular ROS increase.
Materials and methods: The murine breast cancer cell line, 4T1E was incubated at 37°C or 42°C for 1h. Intracellular ROS generation after HT treatment was detected by electron spin resonance (ESR). Twenty four hours after HT treatment, cells were incubated in medium containing 0, 0.1 and 1 μM DOX for 24 h. Cell viability was measured using the Cell Counting Kit 8, a water-soluble tetrazolium-8 based colorimetric assay. ABCG2 expression in whole cells was analyzed by Western blotting.
Results and discussion: ESR signal peak with HT treatment became high as compared to without HT treatment, indicating intracellular ROS level was increased by HT treatment. Cell viability and ABCG2 expression were decreased by DOX exposure and by HT treatment. The enhancement of HT treatment effect by DOX is considered to be result of down-regulation of ABCG2 expression by ROS. When cells were exposed to DOX with 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), cell viability reduced further. Since it is known that porphyrin is introduced by ALA and is transported by ABCG2, we speculate that ALA worked as a competitive inhibitor of DOX excretion transporter to enhance cell death. ESR signal peak in ALA treatment cells was higher than that in non-ALA treatment cells. Significant increase in cellular damage by HT treatment was shown by adding ALA, but not without ALA. Moreover, cell death induced by HT and ALA treatment was suppressed by adding N-acetylcysteine (NAC), which is an antioxidant. These results suggest that cellular damage of HT treatment is due to ROS production induced by ALA.
Conclusion: HT treatment involved intracellular ROS production and down-regulated the expression of ABCG2 protein. HT treatment also enhanced the cell damage by DOX. Cell death by DOX was enhanced by combination with HT and ALA treatment, possibly via intracellular ROS generation, and was suppressed by additing antioxidant.

Abstract
The Φ9/24 ground state of the Ni2+ diatomic molecular cation is determined experimentally from temperature and magnetic-field-dependent x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy in a cryogenic ion trap, where an electronic and rotational temperature of 7.4±0.2 K was reached by buffer gas cooling of the molecular ion. The contribution of the spin dipole operator to the x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spin sum rule amounts to 7Tz=0.17±0.06μB per atom, approximately 11% of the spin magnetic moment. We find that, in general, homonuclear diatomic molecular cations of 3d transition metals seem to adopt maximum spin magnetic moments in their electronic ground states.

Abstract
The magnetic moment of a single impurity atom in a finite free electron gas is studied in a combined x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy, charge transfer multiplet calculation, and density functional theory study of size-selected free chromium-doped gold clusters. The observed size dependence of the local magnetic moment can be understood as a transition from a local moment to a mixed valence regime. This shows that the Anderson impurity model essentially describes finite systems even though the discrete density of states introduces a significant deviation from a bulk metal, and the free electron gas is only formed by less than 10 electrons. Electronic shell closure in the gold host minimizes the interaction of localized impurity states with the confined free electron gas and preserves the magnetic moment of 5 μ_{B} fully in CrAu_{2}^{+} and almost fully in CrAu_{6}^{+}. Even for open-shell species, large local moments are observed that scale with the energy gap of the gold cluster. This indicates that an energy gap in the free electron gas stabilizes the local magnetic moment of the impurity atom.

Abstract
Field experiments in a contaminated farmland in Nihonmatsu city, Fukushima were conducted to assess the effectiveness of the plant-microbe interaction on removal of radiocesium. Before plowing, 93.3% of radiocesium was found in the top 5 cm layer (5,718 Bq kg DW(-1)). After plowing, Cs radioactivity in the 0-15 cm layer ranged from 2,037 to 3,277 Bq kg DW(-1). Based on sequential extraction, the percentage of available radiocesium (water soluble + exchangeable) was fewer than 10% of the total radioactive Cs. The transfer of (137)Cs was investigated in three agricultural crops; komatsuna (four cultivars), Indian mustard and buckwheat, inoculated with a Bacillus or an Azospirillum strains. Except for komatsuna Nikko and Indian mustard, inoculation with both strains resulted in an increase of biomass production by the tested plants. The highest (137)Cs radioactivity concentration in above-ground parts was found in Bacillus-inoculated komatsuna Nikko (121 Bq kg DW(-1)), accompanied with the highest (137)Cs TF (0.092). Furthermore, komatsuna Nikko-Bacillus and Indian mustard-Azospirillum associations gave the highest (137)Cs removal, 131.5 and 113.8 Bq m(-2), respectively. Despite the beneficial effect of inoculation, concentrations of (137)Cs and its transfer to the tested plants were not very high; consequently, removal of (137)Cs from soil would be very slow.

Abstract
Magnetic spin and orbital moments of size-selected free iron cluster ions Fe{n}{+} (n=3-20) have been determined via x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy. Iron atoms within the clusters exhibit ferromagnetic coupling except for Fe{13}{+}, where the central atom is coupled antiferromagnetically to the atoms in the surrounding shell. Even in very small clusters, the orbital magnetic moment is strongly quenched and reduced to 5%-25% of its atomic value while the spin magnetic moment remains at 60%-90%. This demonstrates that the formation of bonds quenches orbital angular momenta in homonuclear iron clusters already for coordination numbers much smaller than those of the bulk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To identify the factors that influence the grief of bereaved elderly people due to the death of a spouse. METHOD Subjects consisted of 172 widows and widowers (137 females, 35 males) aged 60 or older who experienced bereavement of a spouse in the last three years. Between August 1994 and October 1996, the subjects were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire and data was also obtained from self-report measures which were returned by mail. A questionnaire consisting of 26 items was prepared based on the theories of Parkes and Deeken. These responses were classified into 4 categories (sensory paralysis, deep attachment and protest, disintegration, reconstruction) and analysis was made by these categories. The time course of the grief was evaluated at 1 week, 49 days and 1 year after the death of the spouse and the time of survey. RESULTS (1) Of the 172 subjects, general health was graded as poor or slightly poor in 33.6%, 67.4% cared for their spouse during medical treatment; and the average GDS depression score was 5.85 (SD = 3.50). (2) With respect to anticipated grief, while their spouses were under medical treatment, more than 50% of the subjects were thinking "I will do Whatever I can to cope". (3) Change in grief response over time: For "sensory paralysis", "I have done whatever I can" rated the highest at 3 points or more on a scale of 4, from immediately after the spouse's death to the present. For "deep attachment and protest", deep attachment including "always thinking of the lost one" marked higher (3.4 points immediately after death to 2.9 at present) than protest. For "disintegration", "nobody understands what I feel" rated the highest (2.6-2.9 points). For "reconstruction", the subjects gradually accepted the death as "unavoidable" and had started to adapt. (4) Factors that significantly influenced grief were the subject's health condition, whether the subject had been notified of the name of the disease or given a prognosis; whether subject provided care for the spouse and GDS depression score. CONCLUSION Sufficient anticipated grief resulted in a feeling of achievement in the sensory paralysis aspect of the grief response and in a long lasting feeling of deep attachment as loneliness and solitude. Disintegration was largely related to depression according to GDS score. Grief was less deeply felt when the subject was healthy, had been informed of the name of the spouse's disease, and had cared for the spouse during medical treatment before bereavement.

Abstract
A 17-year-old male patient with dyshormonogenetic goiter complicated with follicular adenoma and growth hormone deficiency is described. He had short stature (-2.3 SD), diffuse goiter and a particularly large nodule in the right lobe of the thyroid gland. The endocrinological studies revealed slight hypothyroidism. He underwent surgical removal of the tumor, diagnosed histopathologically as follicular adenoma, embryonal type; and the diffuse goiter was diagnosed as dyshormonogenetic goiter. It was speculated that long-term hypersecretion of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) caused adenoma in the thyroid gland. Although the goiter disappeared after oral thyroxine replacement therapy, his height gain remained poor. Then, he was diagnosed partial growth hormone deficiency, and growth hormone therapy improved his height gain. It has been reported that a high percentage of patients with congenital hypothyroidism have additional anomalies. This is, however, the first reported case of dyshormonogenetic goiter complicated with growth hormone deficiency.

The effect of rapid phase change on chirped continuum pulses is studied with a frequency-domain interferometer. Because of the chirp, temporal evolution of the optical Kerr response in CS(2) is projected into difference phase spectra. The chirped continuum shows spectral shifts that are due to induced phase modulation even when the continuum has a flat spectrum.

Abstract
A new femtosecond time-resolved interferometer was developed that utilizes interference fringes in the frequency domain to obtain simultaneously difference phase spectra (DPS) and difference transmission spectra with a multichannel spectrometer. For the first time to our knowledge, transient oscillations were observed in DPS and the spectral shift of a probe pulse was time resolved together with the rise in DPS, which is clear evidence for induced phase modulation in absorptive materials.

Abstract
Recently we have developed an assay method for peroxidase-catalyzed coupling of iodotyronine residues of thyroglobulin, which is applicable to human diseased thyroid tissues. In the present study, the assay method as well as usual peroxidase assay methods were applied to thyroids of three patients (No. 1: familial goiter with impaired thyroglobulin synthesis, No. 2: mild chronic thyroiditis, No. 3: dyshormonogenetic goiter) who showed organification of iodine with high TSH levels and low thyroid hormone levels in sera. In general, these patients showed relatively high activities measured by guaiacol oxidation assay, iodide oxidation and coupling assay compared with those of control thyroids. Iodothyronine content in thyroglobulin was very low except thyroxine in No. 2. These results indicate that factors other than peroxidase may be responsible for the cause of the hypothyroid state. The coupling assay method used here is therefore useful for the detection of the 'coupling defect' in patients in a hypothyroid state.
