Abstract
The two limiting factors for lentil protein utilization are water solubility and digestibility. In this study, we utilized two non-thermal techniques: (1) protein complexation of lentil and casein proteins using the pH-shifting method and (2) protein conjugation with trehalose to produce trehalose-conjugated lentil-casein protein complexes (T-CPs) with enhanced water solubility and digestibility. The protein structure of the T-CPs was analyzed for secondary protein structure, conformation protein, and tertiary protein structure using Fourier-transform infrared, UV, and fluorescence spectroscopies, respectively. The surface hydrophobicity and surface charge of T-CPs solution at pH 7.0 changed significantly (P < 0.05). Using these two non-thermal techniques, the water solubility and digestibility of T-CPs increased significantly (P < 0.05) by 85 to 89 % and 80 to 85 %, respectively. The results of this study suggested that these non-thermal techniques could enhance the surface and protein structure properties, improving water solubility and digestibility.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess the technique of natural fermentation by applying water kefir to the casein protein. The diverse microorganisms and their enzymes found naturally in the water kefir can influence casein's characteristics. The fermented casein's protein quality (digestibility and secondary protein structure) and composition (total soluble solids and nutritive and non-nutritive substances) were investigated. Our findings revealed that the fermented casein's protein digestibility and total phenolic content increased from 82.46 to 88.60 % and 7.6 to 8.0 mg gallic acid equivalent/100 g, respectively. In addition, their surface charge and hydrophobicity changed from -30.06 to -34.93 mV and 286.9 to 213.7, respectively. Furthermore, the fermented casein's secondary protein components, α-helix (decreased from 13.66 to 8.21 %) and random coil (increased from 16.88 to 19.61 %), were also altered during the fermentation. Based on these findings, the water kefir fermentation approach could be an effective, practical, non-thermal approach for improving casein's protein quality and composition.

Abstract
The utilization of pea proteins (PPs) is limited due to their relatively low protein digestibility (∼81%) compared to animal-based proteins, such as whey. The present investigation involved the fermentation of PPs at a concentration of 1% (w/v) using 5% (w/v) water kefir for 60 h at 25°C to improve the functional properties of PPs. The results showed a significant (p < 0.05) increase in lactic acid and acetic acid production during fermentation. These findings suggest that PPs can be effectively fermented using water kefir as a starter culture for the increased protein digestibility of PPs. The PP conformation underwent modifications, including secondary and tertiary protein structure alterations. The total phenolic compounds increased throughout the fermentation, reaching around 695.32 ± 15 mg gallic acid equivalent/100 g after 24 h of fermentation. Furthermore, the fermentation process has culminated in significant (p < 0.05) changes in the surface charge and hydrophobic properties of the fermented PPs, from -38.1 to -45.73 and 362.7 to 550.2, respectively. Fermentation using water kefir is a promising technique for improving the digestibility, protein structure, and nutritional values of PPs.

Abstract
Plant-based proteins are often associated with a range of health benefits. Most research primarily investigates pea and soy proteins, while lentil proteins received minimal attention. This study evaluates the effect of protein complexation (using the pH-shifting technique) coupled with trehalose conjugation on lentil and whey proteins. The protein structures after the modification were analysed using spectroscopic methods: Fourier-transform infrared, ultraviolet spectra, and fluorescence spectra. The amide group I, conformation protein, and tertiary structure of the trehalose-conjugated lentil-whey protein complexes (T-LWPs) showed significant changes (P < 0.05). Moreover, the surface properties (surface hydrophobicity and charges) of T-LWPs were significantly modified (P < 0.05), from 457 to 324 a.u and from 36 to -40 mV, respectively. Due to these modifications on the protein structures, the protein digestibility (80-86%) and water solubility (90-94.5%) of T-LWPs increased significantly (P < 0.05) with the increase in the trehalose concentration, from 0 (control) to 5% (w/w), respectively. This study suggested that coupling protein complexation and trehalose conjugation can enhance the overall properties of lentil-based protein complexes. With this enhancement, more opportunities in the utilisation of lentils are to be expected.

Abstract
Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR) are commonly overexpressed in cancers making them appealing targets for cancer therapeutics. Two groups of indole-6-carboxylic acid derivatives, hydrazone derivatives targeting EGFR and oxadiazole derivatives targeting VEGFR-2, were synthesized and characterized using FT-IR, 1 H-NMR, 13 CNMR, and HR-MS techniques. Binding patterns to potential molecular targets were studied using molecular docking and compared to standard EGFR and VEGFR-2 inhibitors. The newly synthesized compounds were cytotoxic to the three cancer cell lines tested (HCT-116, HeLa, and HT-29 cell lines) as evaluated by the MTT assay. Compound 3 b (EGFR-targeting) and compound 6 e (VEGFR-2-targeting) possessed the highest antiproliferation activity, were cancer-selective, arrested cancer cells in the G2/M phase, induced the extrinsic apoptosis pathway, and had the highest EGFR/VEGFR-2 enzyme inhibitory activity, respectively. The structure-activity relationships of the new compounds showed that the presence of an aryl or heteroaryl fragment attached to a linker is required for the anti-tumor activity. In conclusion, the findings of the current study suggest that compounds 3 b and 6 e are promising cytotoxic agents that act by inhibiting EGFR and VEGFR-2 tyrosine kinases, respectively.

Abstract
Petroselinum crispum (Mill) Fuss is an aromatic plant belonging to the Apiaceae family and used in gastronomy as a spice. Several studies have been developed in leaves but studies are limited in seeds, especially the essential oils obtained from seeds. The aim of this study was to determine the phytochemical profile of the volatile compounds of this essential oil by gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in order to evaluate its phytotoxic activity on Lactuca sativa seeds and to carry out an in silico analysis on the target enzyme of the herbicide glyphosate 5-enolpyruvylshikimate 3-phosphate synthase (EPSP). The essential oil was obtained by steam distillation for two hours and then was injected into a GC-MS, the phytotoxic assay was carried out on Lactuca seeds and the in silico evaluation on the EPSP synthase focused on the volatile compounds similar to glyphosate, docking analysis, and molecular dynamics to establish the protein-ligand stability of the most active molecule. The chromatographic analysis revealed 47 compounds, predominated by three compounds with the most abundant percentage in the total content (1,3,8-ρ-menthatriene (22.59%); apiole (22.41%); and β-phellandrene (15.02%)). The phytotoxic activity demonstrated that the essential oil had a high activity at 5% against L. sativa seed germination, inhibition of root length, and hypocotyl length, which is comparable to 2% glyphosate. The molecular docking on EPSP synthase revealed that trans-p-menth-6-en-2,8-diol had a high affinity with the enzyme EPSP synthase and a better stability during the molecular dynamic. According to the results, the essential oil of P. crispum seeds presented a phytotoxic activity and might be useful as a bioherbicide agent against weeds.

Abstract
A new series of 4-(4-methoxyphenyl)-5-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol derivatives were synthesized as analogs for the anticancer drug combretastatin A-4 (CA-4) and characterized using FT-IR, 1 H-NMR, 13 CNMR, and HR-MS techniques. The new CA-4 analogs were designed to meet the structural requirements of the highest expected anticancer activity of CA-4 analogs by maintaining ring A 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl moiety, and at the same time varying the substituents effect of the triazole moiety (ring B). In silico analysis indicated that compound 3 has higher total energy and dipole moment than colchicine and the other analogs, and it has excellent distribution of electron density and is more stable, resulting in an increased binding affinity during tubulin inhibition. Additionally, compound 3 was found to interact with three apoptotic markers, namely p53, Bcl-2, and caspase 3. Compound 3 showed strong similarity to colchicine, and it has excellent pharmacokinetics properties and a good dynamic profile. The in vitro anti-proliferation studies showed that compound 3 is the most cytotoxic CA-4 analog against cancer cells (IC50 of 6.35 μM against Hep G2 hepatocarcinoma cells), and based on its selectivity index (4.7), compound 3 is a cancer cytotoxic-selective agent. As expected and similar to colchicine, compound 3-treated Hep G2 hepatocarcinoma cells were arrested at the G2/M phase resulting in induction of apoptosis. Compound 3 tubulin polymerization IC50 (9.50 μM) and effect on Vmax of tubulin polymerization was comparable to that of colchicine (5.49 μM). Taken together, the findings of the current study suggest that compound 3, through its binding to the colchicine-binding site at β-tubulin, is a promising microtubule-disrupting agent with excellent potential to be used as cancer therapeutic agent.

Abstract
Background:
1,3,4-oxadizole and pyrazole derivatives, are very important scaffold for medicinal chemistry. Literature survey revealed that they possess wide spectrum of biological activities among which are anti-inflammatory and antitumor.
Objectives:
To describe the synthesis and evaluation of two classes of new niflumic acid (NF) derivatives, the 1,3,4-oxadizole derivatives (compounds 4AE) and pyrazole derivatives (compounds 5 and 6) as EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors in silico and in vitro.
Methods:
The designed compounds were synthesized using conventional organic synthesis methods. The antitumor activities of the new NF derivatives against HepG2 hepatocellular carcinoma and A549 non-small cell lung cancer cell lines were assessed in vitro via MTT assay, flow cytometry, RT-PCR, as well as via molecular docking studies.
Conclusion:
A series of niflumic acid derivatives (3, 4A-E, 5 and 6) were successfully created and FT-IR, 1H, 13CNMR, and HRMS were used to confirm their chemical structures. According to molecular docking studies, compounds 3, 5, and 6 have the highest docking scores (ΔG) and the majority of the tested compounds have a good pharmacokinetic profile. Results of compound 6 in vitro antitumor activities show that it is a promising EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor.

Abstract
Thirteen new derivatives of picolinic acid (4–7) were designed and synthesized from the starting parent molecule, picolinic acid. The new compounds were characterized by ATR-FTIR, 1HNMR, and CHNS analysis. A molecular docking study was performed to evaluate the binding affinity of the synthesized compounds toward EGFR kinase domain that indicated occupation of the critical site of EGFR kinase pocket and excellent positioning of the compounds in the pocket. The cytotoxic activity of the compounds against two human cancer cell lines (A549 and MCF-7), the non-tumorigenic MCF10A cell line, and white blood cells (WBC) was evaluated using the MTT assay. Compound 5 showed anticancer activity against A549 lung cancer cells (IC50 = 99.93 µM) but not against MCF-7 breast cancer cells or normal cells. Compound 5 mediated cytotoxicity in A549 lung cancer cells by inducing apoptotic cell death, as suggested by fragmented nuclei after DAPI staining, and agarose gel electrophoresis. Moreover, compound 5 triggered the activation of caspases 3, 4 and 9. However, compound 5 treatment did not affect the release of cytochrome c from the mitochondria to the cytosol, as compared to the vehicle-treated control cells. Nevertheless, compound 5-treated cells reported greater release of smac/DIABLO to the cytosol. In the same context, both compound 5 and thapsigargin (specific inhibitor of sarco/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA)) enhanced eIF2 phosphorylation, reflecting the activation of the atypical ER stress pathway and the potential applicability of compound 5 in lung cancer treatment.

Abstract
Novel compounds (6–10) were synthesized and confirmed by spectroscopic analysis, including AT-IR, 1HNMR and CHNS. Their cytotoxic effect was evaluated by MTT assay against two cancer cell lines and two normal cell types. Compound 7 exhibited anticancer activity against MCF-7 breast cancer cell line (GI50 = 63.9 µg/ml, 148 µM), without any effect against A549 lung cancer cells, or the normal cells. Compound 7 caused cytotoxicity in MCF-7 breast cancer cells by apoptotic cell death, as suggested by fragmented nuclei after DAPI staining and agarose gel electrophoresis. In addition, treating MCF-7 cells with compound 7 resulted in an increase in the level of caspase 9 mRNA level, and its activation. Moreover, compound 7-treated MCF-7 cells showed enhanced cytochrome c release from the mitochondria to the cytosol, signifying an induction of the intrinsic apoptotic pathway. Finally, compound 7 exhibited epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) kinase inhibitory activity at (EC50 = 0.13 µM), which was matched by molecular docking studies that showed compound 7 might be an important EGFR kinase inhibitor.

Abstract
Objective: This study goal was to screen participants from different settings in Baghdad for depression using Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) scale and identify factors influencing the levels of depression. Methods: This cross-sectional study included a convenience sample of 313 people from four settings (teaching hospital, college of medicine, college of pharmacy, and high school) in Baghdad, Iraq. The participants were screened using paper survey relying on the BDI scale during spring 2018. Using multiple linear regression analysis, we measured the association between depression scores and six participant factors. Results: The overall prevalence of depression in our sample was 57.2%. Female participants had higher BDI scores (depression symptoms) than male participants. Among those with depression, the majority (73.7%) had mild or moderate degree of depression. In terms of the cut-off scores, 42.8 % scored in the normal range, 20.4 % in the mild range, 7.0 % in the borderline range, 14.7 % in the moderate range, 10.5 % in the severe range and 4.5 % in the very severe range depression.Approximately 63% of the participants had sort of suicidal thoughts. The regression analysis showed significant (P-value < 0.05) association between having higher scores of depression symptoms and the presence of chronic disease(s), recent family loss, young age and female gender. Conclusions: In our findings, depression was quite prevalent among people in Iraq. The study demonstrates the importance of broad screening and social/psychiatric counseling of young population.Iraqi healthcare professionals should structure specific actions for patients with chronic diseases to minimize their depression symptoms.
