The Self-Stigma of Hearing Loss in Adults and Older Adults: A Systematic Review

OBJECTIVES

Previous studies have demonstrated that individuals with hearing loss can internalize social stigmas, resulting in several self-perceived negative connotations, such as incompetence, cognitive impairment, and social disability. This systematic review aimed to investigate the impact of the social stigma associated with hearing loss on the self-stigma experienced by adults and older adults.

DESIGN

Combinations of words and appropriate truncations were selected and adjusted specifically for each electronic database. The Population, Exposure, Comparator, Outcomes, and Study Characteristics strategy was used to delimit the scope of the review, bearing in mind the importance of a well-formulated research question.

RESULTS

A total of 953 articles were retrieved from the final search of each database. Thirty-four studies were selected for full-text reading. Thirteen were excluded, and 21 studies were ultimately included in this review. The results of this review were divided into three themes: (1) impact of social stigmas on self-stigma, (2) effect of emotions on self-stigma, and (3) other factors that impact self-stigma. The themes were related to the relationship between the individual and social perceptions reported by the participants with respect to their hearing experiences.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results suggest that the impact of social stigma associated with hearing loss on the self-stigma of adults and older adults is strongly associated with the effects of aging and hearing loss, which may lead to withdrawal, social segregation, and negative self-perception.

Perception of speech therapy and education students about their experiences and practices in reading and writing academic genre texts

PURPOSE

to analyze the perception of Speech-Therapy and Education undergraduates regarding their experiences and practices in reading and writing texts from academic discourse genres.

METHODS

It´s a mixed crosscut study, with data collected by the application of a semi-structured questionnaire with open and closed questions about students' relation towards reading and writing of academic texts, their difficulties in the use of these genres and how they cope with such difficulties.

RESULTS

The results show that a significant number of the students assume that they have some difficulty in reading and writing these discourse genres in academic settings, which may be an indication of gaps in working with reading and writing during previous educational levels. Some of these students even blame themselves for not effectively following the reading and writing proposals in higher education, implying that this is due to an intrinsic disorder.

CONCLUSION

The data allow us to state that, despite the increase in the number of students in higher education, many still feel excluded from academic life, especially for not using academic discourse genres in a proficient way. It is the University responsibility, along with all actors involved in higher education, to promote actions that consider the right to education for all students.

The knowledge of the Municipal Guard of Curitiba about the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), deafness and deaf people

INTRODUCTION

In Brazil, there is a considerable number of deaf people, sign language users, who should have access to equal opportunities. However, sign language is unknown by the most Brazilian population, especially those who work in public institutions, and deny the deaf their rights to equality. Therefore, several professionals, among them, the municipal guards, are not prepared for the diversity.

PURPOSE

to investigate the knowledge of the Municipal Guards (MG) from Curitiba about the deaf, Brazilian Sign Language (Libras),and their service practices when they need to interact with deaf citizens.

METHOD

It´s a mixed crosscut study; data were collected by the application of a semi-structured questionnaire answered by 50 municipal guards, with questions on their knowledge about the deaf, the sign language and the service practices conducted by their corporation towards deaf people. Data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively by means of Bardin's Content Analysis.

RESULTS

The results demonstrate that participants have a limited knowledge of deafness and Libras.

CONCLUSION

Most members of the Municipal Guard have a view of deaf people and the Brazilian Sign Language based on an organic perspective of deafness, and it was also observed that during their service practices towards deaf people, many of them could not either interact or communicate with them.

Qualidade de vida de surdos usuários de Libras no Sul do Brasil

O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a qualidade de vida (QV) de surdos usuários da Língua Brasileira de Sinais que vivem no sul do Brasil, por meio do WHOQOL-Bref, e analisar os fatores que influenciam uma qualidade de vida mais favorável a esta parcela da população. Trata-se de um estudo transversal de natureza quantitativa, cuja coleta de dados se deu por meio da aplicação do questionário WHOQOL-Bref e de um questionário de caracterização da amostra. Participaram 60 surdos usuários de Libras moradores da região Sul do Brasil. Utilizou-se análise estatística por meio de métodos de estatística descritiva e métodos inferenciais considerando-se o nível de significância de 0,05 (5%). Os resultados apontaram que a média do escore total do WHOOQL-Bref foi de 43,3%. O domínio com maior escore foi o de relações sociais (64,31%) e o de menor escore o meio ambiente (54,77%). Os participantes surdos com nível maior de escolaridade e que se percebem proficientes no uso da língua portuguesa tiveram melhores escores de qualidade de vida. O compromisso com a QV da população brasileira, incluindo, a parcela surda, foco deste trabalho, pressupõe a formulação e o cumprimento de políticas públicas que visem o desenvolvimento de ações afirmativas direcionadas a superar condições de desigualdade e exclusão dessas pessoas, a fim de auxiliá-las a eliminar as barreiras que impedem ou dificultam sua participação na sociedade.

Práticas de letramento e promoção da saúde no ensino superior: efeitos de intervenção intersetorial

Analisar os efeitos de uma intervenção intersetorial a fim de promover relações e práticas significativas de leitura e escrita com os gêneros acadêmicos (GA) e ressignificar o sofrimento no contexto do ensino superior. Trata-se de uma pesquisa intervenção, qualitativa, junto a alunos do ensino superior. Foram propostos encontros semanais abordando experiências e práticas de leitura e escrita, conhecimento e posições subjetivas dos GA. Ao longo da intervenção evidenciaram-se mudanças nas posições quanto às experiências e condições de letramento que passaram a ser reconhecidas como constituídas histórica e coletivamente. Assim, os acadêmicos ressignificaram suas experiências e avançaram na apropriação dos GA e no enfrentamento do sofrimento vivências acadêmicas. O estudo possibilitou condições e reflexões que culminaram no protagonismo desses estudantes, enfatizando a necessidade da implementação de ações, no âmbito da assistência estudantil, voltadas às condições de letramento.

Promoção de saúde de idosos residentes em instituições de longa permanência: uma pesquisa dialógica

O aumento da expectativa de vida vem fazendo crescer, no Brasil, o número de Instituições de Longa Permanência para Idosos (ILPI), as quais devem investir na qualidade de vida de seus residentes. Nesse contexto, convém refletir sobre a importância da promoção da saúde junto a pessoas institucionalizadas, ressaltando aspectos interacionais, pois é por meio da participação social que elas podem permanecer ativas e integradas à comunidade em que vivem. Como objetivo de compreender o papel que atividades dialógicas assumem na promoção da saúde de idosos institucionalizados, o presente estudo, de caráter qualitativo, pautou-se na análise dialógica do discurso e contou com a participação de 14 residentes de duas ILPI, situadas no Sul do Brasil. Eles participaram de 16 encontros grupais, com duração de 90 minutos, que ocorreram semanalmente, em cada ILPI. Na visão dos idosos, práticas dialógicas proporcionaram-lhes bem-estar, contribuindo para que enfrentassem a rotina da instituição.

A linguagem na Síndrome de Treacher Collins: uma análise dialógica

RESUMO A Síndrome de Treacher Collins ou Disostose Mandibulofacial é decorrente de mutações genéticas e caracterizada por malformações craniofaciais. Crianças com essa síndrome podem apresentar dificuldades cognitivas, linguísticas e psicomotoras. São raras as publicações que discorrem sobre a complexidade de seus aspectos terapêuticos, especialmente, voltados à evolução clínica vinculada à linguagem. O presente estudo objetiva analisar o processo terapêutico voltado à oralidade de um menino com essa síndrome, considerando a natureza dialógica da linguagem. Trata-se de um estudo de caso longitudinal e prospectivo, realizado em uma clínica-escola de uma Universidade, situada no sul do Brasil, durante quatro anos, desde 2012 até 2016. Os dados foram coletados a partir de gravações semanais do paciente em interação com os seus terapeutas, sendo, também, considerados os registros arquivados em seu prontuário. Os resultados indicam que a criança apresentou evolução no que se refere à apropriação da linguagem oral. Apesar das dificuldades na produção vocal e na articulação de fonemas, decorrentes de alterações craniofaciais próprias da síndrome em questão, as atividades dialógicas estabelecidas entre o menino, seus terapeutas e sua família, propiciaram mudanças gradativas no seu posicionamento em relação ao outro e à linguagem. Inicialmente, ele fazia uso de gestos, mímicas faciais, apontamentos, os quais eram compreendidos apenas pelas pessoas que faziam parte do seu cotidiano. Atualmente, além dos recursos gestuais, ele passou a usar a oralidade para participar de práticas interativas, indicando mais autonomia para interagir com seus interlocutores.

Accessibility of people with disabilities to higher education: social attitudes of students and professors of a higher education institution

ABSTRACT Purpose: to compare and analyze social attitudes of students and professors of a higher education institution about the inclusion of people with disabilities according to variables gender, age and areas of knowledge of participants. Methods: the quantitative study was conducted on 601 academics, 583 being students and 18 university professors from a private university, who have contact with individuals with disabilities in the classroom. A questionnaire was applied to identify the social attitudes related to the variables correlated above. Results: the sample included 97% of students, 417 being females and 184 males. Nearly 43% were younger than 20 years and 6% older than 40 years. The female professors and students had higher agreement with the questionnaire, while male professors and students reported lower satisfaction. Concerning age, the younger individuals were the most dissatisfied ones. In relation to the field of knowledge, the Exact, Human and Health Sciences, in this order, presented increased agreement with the research instrument. Conclusion: the study investigated the social attitudes of professors and students about the inclusion of people with disabilities, analyzing the results according to gender, age and area of knowledge, comparing and correlating with the agreement about the questionnaire. The results revealed the need to deepen the studies about variables that may influence the social attitudes related to the inclusion and permanence of these individuals in higher education institutions.

A case study of a socially deprived child from a dialogical approach

ABSTRACT This study aims to discuss how Speech-language therapy based on a dialogical perspective can facilitate the language appropriation process of a child, victim of social deprivation.In this longitudinal case study, the collected data, from February to November 2016, were analyzed from therapy sessions conducted at a Speech-Language Clinic located in Southern Brazil. The child was a 5-year old girl, victim of social deprivation in her early childhood. For the language therapeutic and evaluation process, the therapist used contextualized language-based activities, several social functions, such as house playing and dolls. During the evaluation process, it was noted that the child did not show intention to initiate or respond to taking turns, did not maintain visual contact and used incomplete and generally unintelligible statements. Throughout the therapeutic process, it was seen that this child began to participate more effectively in the dialogues, replicating the statements of others, positioning herself in relation to the other, perceiving herself as a dialogical subject and initiating the interactive process. Through the dialogical interactions that occurred in this period, it is considered that there was an expansion of her discursive interactions, allowing a better organization of her speech and the role she plays in each social interaction.

Active aging: an intervention-research report

ABSTRACT Purpose: this study aimed to analyze significant effects of language activities on elderly people´s autonomy and social participation. Methods: it is an intervention research report, based on a dialogical discourse perspective, developed in two stages. In the first, a speech-language intervention involving written and oral practices about life stories was carried out with six elderly participants. In the second, a semi-structured interview was applied with these participants based on questions that addressed the aims of the study. Results: the participants were all females, aged between 61 and 90 years old. Their statements indicated that, through dialogical practices, they were able to increase their social participation, autonomy and self-esteem; they were also able to deconstruct stigmatizing social standards imposed to elderly people. Final Considerations: dialogical practices among the elderly can help promote active aging and overcome negative conceptions about elderly people, as proposed by the World Health Organization and the National Health Care Policy for the Elderly, which confirm that elderly people contribute to social development.

Benefit of Using the Prosthesis with Sound Generators in Individuals with Tinnitus Associated With Mild to Moderately Severe Hearing Loss

INTRODUCTION

One of the treatments currently available for the remission of tinnitus, when associated with hearing loss is the use of hearing aids with sound generator. Such treatment is based on the capability that the human brain has to get used to a new sound over another.

OBJECTIVE

To describe the results found in a group of people who have undergone treatment with sound generators. Method: Audiologic follow-up protocols of 25 adult subjects with hearing loss and complaint of tinnitus were analyzed. It was applied: free field audiometry with hearing aids, Visual Analog Scale to determine the degree of annoyance of the tinnitus and Tinnitus Handicap Inventory to assess tinnitus impact on the quality of life before and after treatment.

RESULTS

After the use of hearing aids there was significant improvement in hearing thresholds; there was a significant reduction in the degree of annoyance caused by tinnitus; there was a significant reduction of tinnitus and, consequently, on the quality of life of the respondents.

CONCLUSION

This study allowed the verification that the use of hearing aids with sound generator is a good resource for the treatment of tinnitus associated with mild to moderately severe hearing loss.

Delimitação da área denominada comunicação suplementar e/ou alternativa (CSA)

RESUMO Realizou-se um resgate histórico acerca da delimitação e difusão da Comunicação Suplementar e/ou Alternativa (CSA) em âmbito internacional e nacional, a fim de elucidar como a área vem sendo constituída, bem como uma revisão da literatura para identificar as principais concepções de linguagem que vêm fundamentando a produção acadêmica em CSA no contexto internacional e nacional Parte-se do pressuposto de que a CSA é uma atividade semiótica composta por signos verbais e não-verbais que medeiam as interações dialógicas, favorecendo a apropriação da linguagem, a aprendizagem e, portanto, a constituição do sujeito com significativas limitações de fala. Pretende-se apreender movimentos e tendências comuns que permitam estabelecer um panorama geral de constituição desta área. O acesso aos acontecimentos, fatos e conhecimentos que participam da delimitação da CSA se deu a partir de revisão de fontes documentais e de revisão de literatura, nacional e internacional, que abordavam, especialmente tais movimentos nos Estados Unidos da América (EUA), Canadá e Brasil, a partir da década de 1950 até a atualidade. Puderam-se apreender, nas cinco últimas décadas, elementos que participaram da constituição de tal área em âmbito internacional. Chega-se a conclusão que a CSA passa a ser identificada como uma área específica a partir de 1950, internacionalmente e no Brasil, a partir do final da década de 1970. Defende-se a ideia de que a CSA não deve ser considerada e organizada como uma área especializada deve sim ser constituída por diferentes disciplinas atreladas às áreas da saúde e da educação que, voltadas à linguagem, considerem a historicidade e complexidade dos fenômenos envolvidos.

Speech language therapy practice in a bilingual dialogical clinic: case report

Purpose

this study aims to discuss the use of Brazilian sign language as the first language for a deaf individual going to a bilingual dialogic clinic from dialogic activities.

Methods

This is a longitudinal study, including one deaf individual, called N, interacting with his family and speech therapists.

Results

During the therapeutic process developed inside the bilingual dialogical clinic, N participated in interactive contexts and could constitute himself as author of his sign language texts. In addition, he started to act dialogically and use verbal and nonverbal signs.

Conclusion

Through interactive and dialogical situations developed inside the speech language therapy clinic, this deaf participant got control of his sign language, and started to get interest in and control of the Portuguese language, especially in the written form.

SUS users' perception: a speech-language pathology approach based on health promotion

PURPOSE

This study aimed to analyze the perceptions of users of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) about the treatment Center where they were assisted, as well as about the speech-language pathology services rendered by this Center.

METHODS

This is a transversal study composed of an interview with 26 open questions and 14 closed questions applied to 111 individuals who were assisted at the SUS Center in August 2013. The quantitative content analysis was conducted through the use of the GraphPadPrisma 5.1, Statistic Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 15.0 software and the application of the D'agostino & Person, F-test and chi-squared test.

RESULTS

Most participants reported a positive perception about the facilities and staff of the treatment center. They were also positive about the waiting time and the speech-language pathologists' explanations and conduct, especially in the audiology department. Most responses from participants were short and did not present an argumentative context.

CONCLUSION

The treatment center received a high approval rating by most users. The audiology department had better grades than the clinical services related to language and oral motor pathologies.

Analise das práticas de letramento de ingressantes e concluintes de uma instituição de ensino superior: estudo de caso

RESUMO O presente estudo visa caracterizar e analisar a qualidade das práticas e o nível de letramento, bem como as possibilidades de leitura e compreensão de textos, presentes no cotidiano acadêmico e extra-acadêmico de estudantes ingressantes e concluintes de uma universidade brasileira. A amostra foi constituída por 392 participantes: 218 ingressantes e 174 concluintes provenientes de cursos de Bacharelado e de Licenciatura de uma universidade brasileira. A coleta de dados foi realizada por meio de um questionário com questões abertas e objetivas, no qual continham perguntas referentes a informações pessoais e da vida escolar de cada estudante; dados sobre as práticas de leitura e escrita no cotidiano dos universitários e um teste prático de leitura, elaborado e adaptado a partir do Indicador Nacional de Alfabetismo Funcional. Para a análise, adotou-se a abordagem quali-quantitativa. Foi possível observar que, embora os textos apresentados pertencessem a gêneros primários, os estudantes apresentaram respostas incorretas e não condizentes ao nível de escolaridade no qual se encontram matriculados. Conclui-se que dos sujeitos avaliados, a maioria tanto de ingressantes quanto de concluintes apresenta o nível 2 de alfabetismo, o que demonstra que as defasagens com relação as práticas de letramento oriundas da educação básica ainda prevalecem na educação superior.

Speech language pathology findings in a Treacher Collins syndrome patient

BACKGROUND

Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) is a rare disorder with different levels of severity due to congenital head and face abnormalities which affect language, orofacial musculature, voice and breadth, suction, chewing and swallowing functions.

AIMS

This paper objectifies to report a Treacher Collins syndrome patient, describing phonoaudiological changes that can be found in individuals suffering from this syndrome.

METHODS & PROCEDURES

The study was carried out with a male child at a teaching Speech Language Pathology clinic in Southern Brazil. The patient underwent audiological assessment, as well as orofacial motricity, swallowing, voice and speech assessments.

OUTCOMES & RESULTS

By means of the assessments, it was possible to perceive that the patient presents moderate hearing loss, inadequacy of phonoarticulatory organs, base of the tongue going backwards and epiglottis collapse over the larynx. In spite of evidencing significant difficulty in producing speech sounds, due to musculoskeletal changes, he effectively interacts in communicative situations, besides understanding sentences and narrated stories.

CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS

The screened case report evidences that an interdisciplinary follow-up is indispensable for this patient suffering from Treacher Collins syndrome, which implies not only speech language therapeutic follow-up, but also in ear, nose and throat and orthodontics areas.

Visão dos graduandos do curso de Fonoaudiologia acerca da Fonoaudiologia Educacional a partir de suas experiências teórico-práticas

RESUMO Objetivo: discutir, sob a ótica dos graduandos de alguns cursos de Fonoaudiologia do Brasil, sua percepção acerca das ações fonoaudiológicas voltada à educação, bem como verificar o conhecimento e as experiências teórico/práticas que estes estudantes tiveram durante seus cursos de graduação em Fonoaudiologia. Métodos: 78 acadêmicos do último ano do curso de graduação em Fonoaudiologia, pertencentes a cinco diferentes universidades brasileiras responderam a um questionário com perguntas abertas sobre sua formação com enfoque na Fonoaudiologia Educacional. Resultados: a maior parte dos acadêmicos percebe que seus cursos propiciaram conhecimentos acerca da Fonoaudiologia Educacional, sendo que 27,63% relataram que os conhecimentos adquiridos partem de um viés clínico e apenas 14,47% dos graduandos apresentaram um conhecimento voltado para uma atuação fonoaudiológica que preconize a promoção da linguagem e do aprender. Quanto à função que deve ser exercida pelos fonoaudiólogos educacionais, 43,59 % citaram a atuação clínica, 25,64% relatam que a função que devem exercer é de promoção da linguagem e 14,10% citaram as duas formas de atuação. Conclusão: pode-se perceber por meio dos relatos de graduandos em Fonoaudiologia que os cursos de graduação nesta área ainda tendem a discutir a Fonoaudiologia Educacional apenas sob um enfoque clínico dentro da escola. Apesar disso, já se percebe uma minoria que discorre a respeito da atuação do fonoaudiólogo educacional por meio de ações de promoção da linguagem e da educação.

Speech language therapy bilingual clinic, a written language therapeutical proposal to deaf people: case report

PURPOSE

This study aimed to analyze the written production of a deaf person who is in the process of written language acquisition.

METHODS

One person with hearing disability, called R., participated in this study together with his Speech Language Pathologist. The therapist, proficient in sign language, acted as an interlocutor and interpreter, prioritizing the interactive nature of language and interfering in the written production only when it was requested.

RESULTS

During the 3 years of work with R., a change in stance toward written language was observed. In addition, he began to reflect on his texts and utilize written Portuguese in a way that allowed his texts to be more coherent. Writing became an opportunity to show his singularity and to begin reconstructing his relationship with language.

CONCLUSION

Speech language pathology and audiology therapy, at a bilingual clinic, can allow people with hearing disability early access to sign language and, consequently, enable the development of the written form of Portuguese.

Linguagem e envelhecimento: práticas de escrita autobiográfica junto a idosos

RESUMO: O envelhecimento populacional está ocorrendo de forma acelerada em todo o mundo e o Brasil vem acompanhando essa tendência mundial. As políticas públicas brasileiras reconhecem que o crescimento da longevidade humana gera uma série de demandas para que seja oportunizado a toda população um envelhecimento com qualidade de vida e autonomia. A presente pesquisa objetiva analisar os efeitos que práticas de escrita autobiográfica desenvolvidas por sujeitos idosos podem gerar em sua autonomia e bem-estar. Participaram deste estudo cinco mulheres e três homens, com idades entre 60 e 87 anos. Trata-se de um relato de caso, cujos dados são analisados qualitativamente a partir da Análise do Conteúdo. O corpus de análise é composto por respostas elaboradas pelos sujeitos da pesquisa a uma entrevista semiestruturada. Tal entrevista, focou-se em questões sobre as atividades de leitura e de escrita desenvolvidas pelos sujeitos antes e depois de terem participado de práticas significativas com a linguagem. A partir da análise das respostas, é possível afirmar que a escrita autobiográfica pode constituir-se numa prática efetiva de letramento, capaz de proporcionar bem-estar, autoestima, realização pessoal, imortalização de experiências e relatos pessoais, resgate de lembranças e promoção de atitudes de cidadania. Esse estudo de caso indica que um trabalho fonoaudiológico voltado ao incremento de práticas de letramento junto a pessoas idosas atende a princípios e propostas das políticas públicas saudáveis voltadas à população que envelhece, pois promove autonomia e participação dos idosos na comunidade, ampliando suas possibilidades de vivenciar um envelhecimento saudável e bem-sucedido.

Aspects of Oral Language, Speech, and Written Language in Subjects with Temporal Lobe Epilepsy of Difficult Control

Introduction About 50 million people have epilepsy and 30% of them have epilepsy that does not respond to properly conducted drug treatment.

Objective Verify the incidence of language disorders in oral language, speech, and written language of subjects with difficult to control temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and compare the occurrence of these disorders in subjects before and after surgery.

Methods Cross-sectional study with quantitative analysis, exploratory type. A questionnaire for data collection was administered covering the following aspects: oral language, speech complaints, and writing production and comprehension. Criteria for inclusion of subjects were a diagnosis of TLE refractory to drug treatment and at least 4 years of schooling.

Results The sample of 63 patients with TLE was divided into two groups: presurgical (n = 31) and postsurgical (n = 32). In the postsurgical group, there was a higher frequency of left lobectomy (75%) than right (25%).

Conclusion Statistical analysis was performed with the chi-square test (significance level of 0.05). Complaints related to speech-language attention were more predominant in postsurgical subjects. Analysis of oral language, speech, and written language in subjects with epilepsy who underwent temporal lobectomy or not showed findings consistent with symptoms related to transient aphasia, with the presence of paraphasias, as well as changes in speech prosody and melody. These symptoms appeared more associated with recurrence after having a temporal lobectomy.

Access to hearing health service in Curitiba-PR for the elderly with hearing loss and tinnitus

OBJECTIVE

To determine the incidence of complaints of hearing loss and tinnitus in a group of seniors and their access to hearing health services in the city of Curitiba.

METHOD

578 elderly, attending general practice clinic of two public hospitals in the city. Three questionnaires were applied: for user identification, to check for hearing loss/tinnitus and on access to hearing health services.

RESULTS

Of the 578 subjects, 187 (31%) had hearing complaints and 112 (20%) had tinnitus; of these, 72% have never had an audiological evaluation, 12% received treatment for tinnitus without success, 16% reported having hearing aids, 14% had hearing aid devices managed by SUS; 76% of the sample showed the desire to carry out an assessment and be awarded hearing aids; 37% did not know where to seek help.

CONCLUSION

The number of individuals with hearing complaints in the studied group is significant, as is the number of people with hearing complaints such as tinnitus who have never had a hearing examination. The access of people to public programs is deficient in this group.

A retextualização como prática nas terapias fonoaudiológicas com sujeitos surdos

Para que sujeitos surdos estabeleçam relações entre a língua brasileira de sinais e a língua portuguesa, o uso de recursos de retextualização pode ser uma ferramenta capaz de levar tais sujeitos a produzirem gêneros textuais escritos de acordo com convenções ortográficas e gramaticais do português. Nesta perspectiva, o objetivo deste trabalho é discutir o processo de retextualização usado como prática nas terapias fonoaudiológicas em grupo como um meio desses sujeitos se apropriarem da língua portuguesa em sua modalidade escrita. Participaram da pesquisa 8 surdos que fazem uso de Libras e da língua portuguesa em sua modalidade escrita. Inicialmente, os sujeitos produziam textos em língua de sinais que, depois de comentados e discutidos, em sessões em grupo, contando com a presença de uma fonoaudióloga, além de outros profissionais, eram retextualizados por meio da escrita. Após a retextualização, os sujeitos surdos foram convocados a reler o texto e, caso julgassem necessário, a modificá-lo. Na sequência, eles reliam os textos em conjunto com os profissionais e o retextualizavam em uma versão final escrita. Nos textos analisados, as operações de reestruturações sintáticas, de reconstruções textuais em função da norma da língua, bem como as de tratamento estilístico com seleção de novas estruturas sintáticas e opções lexicais foram as mais usadas nos processos de retextualização. A partir dos processos de retextualização, os surdos passaram a refletir sobre a escrita e sua função social, assumindo essa modalidade da linguagem com mais disposição e autoconfiança.

Análise da percepção de um grupo de idosos a respeito de seu handicap auditivo antes e após o uso do aparelho auditivo

INTRODUÇÃO: A presbiacusia, ou perda auditiva causada pelo envelhecimento, pode gerar dificuldades comunicativas, psicológicas e sociais nos indivíduos idosos, com impactos profundos em sua vida social e familiar. OBJETIVO: Este estudo visou analisar a percepção de um grupo de idosos a respeito de seu handicap auditivo antes e após o uso do aparelho auditivo. MÉTODOS: Foi aplicado um questionário a 29 idosos oriundos de um hospital particular da cidade de Curitiba, PR. Neste estudo, os idosos responderam a perguntas referentes às consequências emocionais causadas pela perda auditiva e sobre os efeitos sociais dessa perda. O questionário foi respondido antes da colocação do aparelho auditivo e, em um segundo momento, após um ou dois anos de uso. RESULTADOS: Verificou-se a existência de diferenças significativas entre os handicaps médios antes e após a protetização (p=0,0000). Desta forma, houve diminuição significativa do handicap auditivo após uso da prótese auditiva no grupo estudado. CONCLUSÃO: Constatou-se que os idosos obtiveram bom aproveitamento geral da prótese auditiva após um ano de sua utilização, o que gerou impacto positivo na qualidade de vida e na percepção do seu handicap auditivo antes e depois do uso da prótese.

A disciplina de Libras no contexto de formação acadêmica em fonoaudiologia

OBJETIVO: analisar a inserção da disciplina de Libras em cursos nacionais de graduação em Fonoaudiologia, enfocando carga horária, período em que é ofertada, a natureza/estrutura da mesma; bem como, a avaliação de graduandos quanto à contribuição de tal disciplina na sua formação acadêmica e nas relações estabelecidas com sujeitos surdos. MÉTODO: foi aplicado um questionário a 240 acadêmicos de sete cursos de graduação em Fonoaudiologia, ofertados em Instituições de Ensino nacionais. Para tanto, adotou-se como critério de inclusão, acadêmicos que já tivessem cumprido a carga horária total da disciplina de Libras. O questionário foi respondido por escrito nas dependências dos cursos. Os resultados, analisados quantitativamente, foram organizados e apresentados em tabelas de frequências absolutas e relativas. RESULTADOS: os achados demonstram que se por um lado dentre os acadêmicos predomina a visão de que a carga horária destinada à referida disciplina é insuficiente, por outro existe uma conscientização por parte dos mesmos quanto à importância e à necessidade da formação em Libras. CONCLUSÃO: a partir de tal estudo pode-se evidenciar a necessidade do aprofundamento de discussões no contexto fonoaudiológico acerca da formação acadêmica voltada a Libras, bem como a definição de critérios e parâmetros que garantam um ensino de qualidade em torno de tal conteúdo. Esse estudo aponta para a necessidade do implemento de pesquisas que ofereçam elementos para o avanço na formação acadêmica fonoaudiológica voltada ao referido conteúdo, bem como, contribuam para a avanço de práticas fonoaudiológicas bilíngues, clínicas e educacionais, dirigidas a sujeitos surdos.

Práticas de letramento no processo de envelhecimento

INTRODUÇÃO: a interação social e o acesso à educação e à saúde dependem de processos interlocutivos que se efetivam a partir das diferentes modalidades de linguagem. Nesse sentido, as condições de leitura e de escrita, vivenciadas pelos sujeitos, assumem papel decisivo em seus processos de envelhecimento, sobretudo ao ser considerado o fato de a sociedade atual pautar-se em atividades que envolvem diferentes níveis de letramento. OBJETIVO: este estudo objetiva analisar as condições de letramento de um grupo de pessoas com idade mínima de 60 anos frequentadores da Unidade de Saúde da Praça Ouvidor Pardinho, em Curitiba, PR. METODOLOGIA: Para analisar tais condições, foram aplicados um questionário e um teste de leitura contendo textos de gêneros diversos a um grupo de sujeitos idosos, frequentadores de uma Unidade Básica de Saúde, situada na cidade de Curitiba, Paraná. O questionário abrange idade, nível de escolarização, profissão, bem como práticas e situações de leitura e escrita. No teste de leitura, os sujeitos foram convocados a localizar informações explícitas nos textos e realizar inferências. RESULTADOS: Os resultados obtidos revelam um acesso restrito da população idosa à linguagem escrita, pois apesar de os sujeitos da pesquisa afirmarem que costumam ler livros, revistas e jornais, foi possível verificar que a maioria não consegue extrair informações apresentadas em textos simples que circulam corriqueiramente no cotidiano social. CONCLUSÃO: Convém ressaltar que o cumprimento do Estatuto do Idoso brasileiro depende da implementação de políticas públicas capazes de garantir a promoção de práticas de letramento junto a pessoas em processo de envelhecimento, uma vez que sem o desenvolvimento dessas práticas não é possível contar com princípios de equidade social que possibilitem ao idoso efetivar sua cidadania.

A produção do conhecimento em fonoaudiologia em comunicação suplementar e/ou alternativa: análise de periódicos

TEMA: a Fonoaudiologia vem utilizando os recursos da Comunicação Suplementar e/ou Alternativa (CSA) para proporcionar maior autonomia a pessoas com limitações significativas da linguagem oral. Seu uso vem lentamente se expandindo no Brasil, mas ainda não constitui prática de amplo conhecimento na área da Fonoaudiologia. OBJETIVO: analisar a produção do conhecimento acerca da CSA publicada em periódicos especializados da área da Fonoaudiologia, no período entre 1997 e 2005. CONCLUSÃO: chega-se à conclusão que um panorama mais completo da produção científica em CSA se faz necessário com uma futura análise da produção do conhecimento acerca da CSA em outras áreas que desenvolvem estudos sobre essa temática, como na Pedagogia, Terapia Ocupacional, Fisioterapia, Psicologia, dentre outras.

A clínica fonoaudiológica e a linguagem escrita: estudo de caso

OBJETIVO: partindo do pressuposto que a atividade lingüística é constitutiva do sujeito, esse trabalho busca discutir o processo de apropriação da escrita, na clínica de linguagem, a partir da relação que o aprendiz estabelece com o outro, fonoaudiólogo. MÉTODOS: foi analisado longitudinalmente o caso de um sujeito dito portador de distúrbio de leitura e escrita, o qual antes de submeter-se a avaliação fonoaudiológica apresentava produções escritas distantes da convenção ortográfica. RESULTADOS: a terapia de linguagem foi eficiente para apropriação da modalidade escrita, já que no decorrer do tratamento houve melhora e superação das queixas. CONCLUSÃO: por meio da atividade conjunta de construção da escrita, na clínica de linguagem, entre o sujeito dessa pesquisa e o fonoaudiólogo, o primeiro pode ser percebido como alguém capaz de fazer uso significativo da escrita.

Anaphoric reference strategies used in written language productions of deaf teenagers

There are few researchers who analyze written productions by deaf individuals; there are also few researchers who discuss the knowledge these people have about written text comprehension and production. For the present study, the investigators analyzed 16 written productions by four deaf individuals based on the anaphoric reference concept as recently proposed in textual linguistics (see, e.g., I. V. Koch & L. A. Marcuschi, 2002). It is important to show that referential progression is one of the textual aspects capable of giving stability and continuity to written productions; referential progression is also relevant to discursive coherence. The results of the writing analysis in the present study show that deaf individuals can learn to use expressive resources that are available in the Portuguese language and can use reference strategies, as long as these individuals can interact with a partner who knows Portuguese.

[Analysis of the speech and language national scientific production on written language]

BACKGROUND

National scientific production on written language in the scope of the Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences.

AIM

To analyze part of the production of the Brazilian Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences on written language, between the years of 1980 and 2004, considering the following: publication period; distribution per period; types of publication; themes; and authorship.

METHOD

This research was developed through the selection and analysis of documents, such as; books, book chapters, and scientific articles published in seven national journals of the Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences (1980 to 2004).

RESULTS

Scientific written production found in the studied period consisted of 236 publications. From this total, 3.39% were published during the 80s; 44.1% during the 90s; and 52.5% during the period of 2000-2004. Regarding the type of publication, 18.5% of the scientific production was published as books, 39% as book chapters and 42.5% as research articles. Considering authorship, 42 authors (76.36%) are entailed to institutions of higher education, either as professors or as students, with a higher concentration in the State of São Paulo and a lower concentration in the State of Rio de Janeiro. Overall, the analyzed written productions considered five themes: "Written language disorders" (52%); "Written language appropriation process" (23.5%); "Written language and deafness" (8.90%); "Written language and neurological disorders" (8.22%) and "Written language and school" (7.53%).

CONCLUSION

This research recovered part of the scientific production on written language in the field of the Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences. The increase of publications on this theme suggests an improvement of the researches in the field of the Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences and, therefore, points to the importance of studies that analyze trends in our scientific production.

Deafness and attention in deaf children

The study shows the differences between hearing parents and deaf instructors interacting with deaf children and directing their attention. Data were collected at home and at a service for special needs in Bristol, England. The mother or instructor was asked to play naturally with the child with the toys provided. When the child's attention was focused during their play, the mother or instructor had to try to direct the child's attention to each of the toys. The results suggest that both groups (mothers and instructors) were effective in directing attention to objects not in the immediate area of play; however, hearing mothers were more successful than deaf instructors.
