Sociocultural pressures and body related experiences during pregnancy and the postpartum period: A qualitative study

Sociocultural pressures to pursue unrealistic appearance expectations and control body shape and weight during pregnancy and postpartum periods have been increasing. Little is known about messages from different sources that may constitute unhelpful or protective influences. The aim of this study was to qualitatively examine messages women received from the sociocultural environment during pregnancy and postpartum and their association with experiences of living in their bodies and body change behaviors. Twenty women, mean age (SD)= 31.85, (2.3) years, 95% White, 60% with a Master's degree or higher, participated in individual interviews and completed online surveys. Women described appearance pressure from multiple sources during and after pregnancy, that increased their concerns related to their weight and shape. For a small number, these concerns were associated with efforts to control weight. Others described protective influences from friends and family that promoted body attunement, functionality appreciation, and positive body image. Findings highlight the importance of sociocultural influences during the peripregnancy period yet how many women derive elements of positive body image from this period. These findings have implications for interventions to support body image among women during the peripregnancy period and positive outcomes among mothers and infants.

Experiences of embodiment during pregnancy and the postpartum period: A qualitative study

Pregnancy and the postpartum period have been identified as times when women experience important changes in their physical bodies. Yet, little is known about the ways in which these experiences may be related to positive embodiment, or in contrast experienced as restricting and objectifying. Thus, the aim of this study was to qualitatively examine the way in which women experienced embodiment during the course of pregnancy and the postpartum period. Twenty women, mean age (SD)= 31.85, (2.3) years, 95 % White, participated in individual interviews and completed online surveys. Findings revealed that women described experiencing both aspects of positive embodiment including body connection and comfort, agency and functionality, attuned self-care, connection to appetite, and inhabiting the body as a subjective site. Findings also revealed negative aspects including body disconnection and discomfort, disrupted functionality, challenged self-care, appetite suppression, and the body as a public and objectified site. Findings highlight the potential for the pregnancy and postpartum periods to be important times for positive embodiment in women, and a source of appreciation of the body and its functionality. However, social pressures may also constrain embodiment during this period. These findings have implications for identifying pathways to positive embodiment in pregnancy and postpartum.

Computer anthropomorphisation in a socio-economic dilemma

In the study of human behaviour, non-social targets are often used as a control for human-to-human interactions. However, the concept of anthropomorphisation suggests that human-like qualities can be attributed to non-human objects. This can prove problematic in psychological experiments, as computers are often used as non-social targets. Here, we assessed the degree of computer anthropomorphisation in a sequential and iterated prisoner's dilemma. Participants (N = 41) faced three opponents in the prisoner's dilemma paradigm-a human, a computer, and a roulette-all represented by images presented at the commencement of each round. Cooperation choice frequencies and transition probabilities were estimated within subjects, in rounds against each opponent. We found that participants anthropomorphised the computer opponent to a high degree, while the same was not found for the roulette (i.e. no cooperation choice difference vs human opponents; p = .99). The difference in participants' behaviour towards the computer vs the roulette was further potentiated by the precedent roulette round, in terms of both cooperation choice (61%, p = .007) and cooperation probability after reciprocated defection (79%, p = .007). This suggests that there could be a considerable anthropomorphisation bias towards computer opponents in social games, even for those without a human-like appearance. Conversely, a roulette may be a preferable non-social control when the opponent's abilities are not explicit or familiar.

The effects of brief diet and anti-diet social media videos on body image and eating concerns among young women

The effects of photo-based platforms on body image concerns are well documented, yet it is unknown whether these effects replicate across video-based platforms such as TikTok. Thus, this experimental study aimed to examine the relationship between video-based platform use and body image. Women aged 18 to 21 (n = 421) were randomly assigned to watch two brief, consecutive TikTok videos in one of three conditions: (1) diet culture, (2) anti-diet, (3) neutral. Participants allocated to the anti-diet condition reported greater increases in weight and shape satisfaction as compared to the diet culture condition, and greater increases in state body appreciation and state intuitive eating as compared to the neutral condition. In addition, those allocated to the diet culture condition reported greater increases in restriction and urges to exercise, and smaller gains in positive mood, as compared to those in the neutral condition. Social media related rumination and thin-ideal internalization potentiated these effects.

Outcomes of the Halliburton Loophole: Chemicals regulated by the Safe Drinking Water Act in US fracking disclosures, 2014-2021

Hydraulic fracturing (fracking) has enabled the United States to lead the world in gas and oil production over the past decade; 17.6 million Americans now live within a mile of an oil or gas well (Czolowski et al., 2017). This major expansion in fossil fuel production is possible in part due to the 2005 Energy Policy Act and its "Halliburton Loophole," which exempts fracking activity from regulation under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). To begin quantifying the environmental and economic impacts of this loophole, this study undertakes an aggregate analysis of chemicals that would otherwise be regulated by SDWA within FracFocus, an industry-sponsored fracking disclosure database. This paper quantifies the total disclosures and total mass of these chemicals used between 2014 and 2021, examines trends in their use, and investigates which companies most use and supply them. We find that 28 SDWA-regulated chemicals are reported in FracFocus, and 62-73% of all disclosures (depending on year) report at least one SDWA-regulated chemical. Of these, 19,700 disclosures report using SDWA-regulated chemicals in masses that exceed their reportable quantities as defined under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). Finally, while the most common direct-supplier category is "company name not reported," Halliburton is the second-most named direct supplier of SWDA regulated chemicals. Halliburton is also the supplier most frequently associated with fracks that use SDWA regulated chemicals. These results show the necessity of a more robust and federally mandated disclosure system and suggest the importance of revisiting exemptions such as the Halliburton Loophole.
