Parâmetros morfológicos e reprodutivos de porcas reprodutoras da raça Turopolje: uma avaliação preliminar

O porco Turopolje (TP) é uma raça suína autóctone Croata em perigo. Este estudo preliminar tinha como objectivo a determinação de parâmetros morfológicos e reprodutivos de porcas reprodutoras TP criadas de forma extensiva no Sistema tradicional ao ar livre. As medições corporais foram efectudas num total de 40 porcas e os dados reprodutivos recolhidos em 34 dessas 40 porcas inscritas no livro genalógico da raça TP. A idade média (±desvio padrão) e o peso corporal das porcas era de 67,5±26,0 meses e 96,6±18,4kg, respetivamente. A altura média na cernelha e garupa eram, respetivamente de 65,2±2,8cm e 68,4±2,9cm, enquanto que o perímetro torácico era de 111,2±10,4cm. Os comprimentos médios do corpo, cabeça, orelhas e cauda eram de 126,0±6,5cm, 27,0±0,90cm, 22,5±8,3cm e 29,9±2,01cm, respetivamente. A idade média ao primeiro parto foi de 23,3±5,7 meses. O número médio de leitões nascidos vivos foi de 4,47±1,96, dos quais 3,08±2,17 foram desmamados. Conclui-se que a população de porcas reprodutoras TP analisada apresenta uma morfologia típica, com um tamanho corporal menor que as raças modernas e uma baixa prolificidade. No entanto, a grande variabilidade nos parâmetros reprodutivos indica que é possível o seu melhoramento, desde logo através dum melhor maneio das porcas.

Efficacy of subgingival air polishing in patients with aggressive periodontitis

Background: Aggressive periodontitis is one of the most severe forms of periodontal disease, resulting in the destruction of junctional epithelium and alveolar bone around teeth in a very short period of time. The early diagnosis of aggressive periodontitis and timely therapy is of outmost importance in controlling the progress of the disease. Application of the techniques of subgingival air polishing of periodontal pockets (pflow) with glycine powder has contributed to reduce damage to the root surface of the teeth and surrounding soft tissue. Aim: The goal of this paper was to determine the effectiveness of two different types of subgingival air polishing therapy for the periodontal tissue status at the patients with aggressive periodontitis Methods and materials: the study included 46 patients of both sexes diagnosed with aggressive peridontitis. The patients were divided into two groups: test group (PFLOW), and control group (sonic SRP). The size of the destruction of periodontal tissue was estimated by CAL and assessment of oral hygiene and gingival inflammation was performed using FMPS and FMBS. Results: Monitored indexes values in both groups were reduced. Conclusion: Subgingival air polishing showed equally good results as the SRP, while pflow was more advantageous with respect to patients acceptability, time usability and safety for the soft tissue.

The influence of dreinage in the treatment of chronic pilonidal sinus disease using midline closure

Unsatisfactory postsurgical end results in the treatment of chronic pilonidal sinus disease caused by long term healing, pain, inconvenience and recurrences of the lesion still remain problem after various surgical techniques have been described and used. This study was designed to show results of several aspects of midline closure technique with respect for surgical complications, hospitalization length and recurrence. This study included 90 patients with pilonidal sinus treated by surgery with midline closure at the department of General surgery of Clinical Hospital Mostar between January 2004 and January 2009. The patients were divided in three groups considering the type of drainage used. Data collected retrospectively included demographics, positive diagnosis of chronic pilonidal sinus, operative technique, type of drainage, complications, hospital stay and recurrence of the disease. Mean hospital stay after excision and midline closure technique was 4.68 days Complication rate was 18/90 (20%). Infection occurred in 18 patients (20%), dehiscence occurred in 10 patients (11.1%). Mean recurrence rate during follow up period was 12/90 (13.3%); range, 24-84 months. There was no statistically significant difference among three groups in hospital stay length (p>0.05), in complication rate (χ(2)=1.66, p>0.05), nor in recurrence rate (χ(2)=1.91, p>0.05). Statistically significant difference was shown between complication rate among non drained and actively drained patients (χ(2)=1.11, p<0.05). Primary midline closure is not a satisfactory method in the treatment of chronic pilonidal sinus, especially without drainage, leading to numerous complications and high rate of recurrence.
