Abstract
The increasing population of European bison (Bison bonasus) can contribute to the prevalence of zoonotic pathogens. The aim of the present study was to assess the presence of A. phagocytophilum infection in European bison tissues as well as ticks removed from European bison in Lithuania and Poland. A further objective of this work was to compare the detected A. phagocytophilum strains. A total of 85 tissue samples (spleen) of European bison and 560 ticks belonging to two species, Ixodes ricinus (n = 408) and Dermacentor reticulatus (n = 152) were tested. DNA of A. phagocytophilum was detected based on RT-PCR in 40% of the European bison samples, 8.8% of the I. ricinus and 5.9% of the D. reticulatus ticks. Analysis of the obtained partial 16S rRNA gene sequences of A. phagocytophilum revealed the presence of three variants with two polymorphic sites. Furthermore, phylogenetic analysis with partial msp4 gene sequences grouped A. phagocytophilum variants into three clusters. This study revealed that the groEL gene sequences of A. phagocytophilum from European bison and their ticks grouped into ecotype I and only one sequence from Lithuanian European bison belonged to ecotype II. The results of the present study indicated that European bison may play a role as a natural reservoir of A. phagocytophilum.

Abstract
Babesia spp. are tick-borne haemoparasites that infect a wide range of domestic and wild mammals. Free-ranging ungulates are considered to be important reservoir hosts of Babesia parasites. The European bison (Bison bonasus) is a large and rare ungulate species, reintroduced into the forests of Central Europe after an absence of several decades. Owing to their protected status, studies of tick-borne pathogens in European bison have so far been rare and fragmented. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of Babesia infection in free-ranging and captive herds of European bison and their ticks. Tissue samples obtained from 37 European bison individuals and 242 ticks belonging to two species, Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor reticulatus, collected from bison were subjected to PCR analysis of the 18S rRNA gene followed by sequencing. Babesia spp. were detected in 8% of the samples from European bison and in 11% of the ticks. Sequence analysis of partial 18S rRNA gene indicated the presence of B. divergens and B. capreoli in European bison, while B. divergens, B. microti and B. venatorum were detected in ixodid ticks. To the best of authors' knowledge, this is the first molecular detection and characterization of Babesia spp. in European bison and their ticks.

Abstract
Lice are blood-sucking insects that are of medical and veterinary significance as parasites and vectors for various infectious agents. More than half of described blood-sucking lice species are found on rodents. Rodents are important hosts of several Bartonella and Rickettsia species, and some of these bacteria are characterized as human pathogens in Europe. Rodent ectoparasites, such as fleas and ticks, are important vectors of Bartonella spp. and Rickettsia spp., but knowledge about the presence of these bacteria in lice is limited. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Bartonella and Rickettsia bacteria in lice collected from rodents in Slovakia. The ectoparasites were collected from small rodents captured from 2010 to 2015 at four different sites in eastern Slovakia. The presence of Bartonella and Rickettsia species in lice samples was screened by real-time PCR, targeting ssrA and gltA genes, respectively. The molecular characterization of the Bartonella strains was based on sequence analysis of partial rpoB and intergenic spacer (ITS) genes, and of the Rickettsia species on sequence analysis of the gltA gene. A total of 1074 lice of seven species were collected from six rodent species. Bartonella DNA was detected in Hoplopleura affinis (collected from Apodemus agrarius, Apodemus flavicollis, and Myodes glareolus), Polyplax serrata (from A. agrarius), and Hoplopleura sp. (from A. flavicollis). Sequence analysis revealed that the Bartonella strains belonged to the Bartonella coopersplainsensis, Bartonella tribocorum, and Bartonella taylorii genogroups. Rickettsia DNA was detected in H. affinis and P. serrata collected from A. agrarius. Sequence analysis revealed two Rickettsia species: Rickettsia helvetica and Rickettsia sp. The results of the study confirm the presence of Bartonella spp. and Rickettsia spp. in lice collected from rodents.

Abstract
The objectives of the present study were to investigate the presence of the Babesia parasites in Dermacentor reticulatus ticks along its current distribution range in Lithuania and Latvia, and Ixodes ricinus in Lithuania, to characterize the detected Babesia spp. using partial sequencing of 18S rRNR gene, and to determine the prevalence of the Babesia pathogens in ticks from different locations of Lithuania and Latvia. From 2013 to 2015, four D. reticulatus nymphs and 2255 questing adults were collected from 40 locations in Lithuania, and 181 questing adult D. reticulatus specimens from 11 locations in Latvia. In Lithuania, 16 questing I. ricinus nymphs and 354 questing adults were collected from 12 locations with the sympatric existence of D. reticulatus and I. ricinus. In Lithuania, Babesia spp. were detected in 1.2% (26/2259) of D. reticulatus and in 9.5% (35/370) of I. ricinus ticks. The overall prevalence of Babesia in D. reticulatus ticks from Latvia was 2.8% (5/181). Sequence analysis of partial 18S rRNA gene of positive samples indicated the presence of B. canis and B. venatorum in D. reticulatus ticks, whereas B. microti and B. venatorum were detected in I. ricinus ticks. Our study is the first investigation on the prevalence and molecular characterization of zoonotic B. canis, B. venatorum, and B. microti in ixodid ticks in Lithuania, and of B. canis in D. reticulatus ticks in Latvia. It is also the first report of B. venatorum in D. reticulatus ticks.

Abstract
Ixodes ricinus (Linnaeus 1758) and Ixodes persulcatus (Schulze 1930) ticks are involved in the transmission of a wide variety of pathogens with considerable impact on human and animal health. The co-distribution zone of these two tick species is situated in the Baltic countries, which provides a special setting for the population studies. In the present study, genetic variability of I. ricinus ticks collected in allopatric and sympatric locations in the Baltic countries has been investigated using a sequence analysis of the mitochondrial DNA control region, 16S rRNA and cytb genes. There were 32 haplotypes (Hd: 0.8551) and 27 haplotypes (Hd:0.8213) of control region sequences from ticks in allopatric and sympatric zones detected, respectively. Out of 47 16S rRNA gene haplotypes, 32 haplotypes (Hd: 0.7213) were found in the allopatric zone and 27 (Hd:0.9572) in the sympatric zone. The Cytb gene was very conserved and monomorphic in ticks from the allopatric zone, whereas three unique haplotypes were observed in the sympatric zone. The higher number of unique haplotypes of the control region was detected in the allopatric zone. Median joining network and Fst analysis did not reveal a clear separation between ticks from the two zones.

Abstract
According to previous observations in three Baltic States, Dermacentor reticulatus was found only in Lithuania where it occurred mainly in the central and western parts of the country. During the past decade, evidence about a changing distribution of D. reticulatus in the Baltic countries was provided by the occurrence of canine babesiosis in the new locations in Lithuania and Latvia. In the present study the current distribution of D. reticulatus in Lithuania and Latvia was investigated. Ticks were collected in different habitats in 2013-2014. A total of 3693 questing ticks belonging to D. reticulatus (n = 2789), Ixodes ricinus (n = 896) and I. persulcatus (n=8) were collected in Lithuania and Latvia. Questing D. reticulatus ticks were found in 73.4% (58/79) and in 44.4% (12/28) of the sampling localities in Lithuania and Latvia, respectively. Relative abundances of the ticks in different habitats were compared. All sites with high abundance of D. reticulatus ticks were localized in open areas close to a water basin and mixed forest. The present study demonstrates that during the past two decades D. reticulatus has expanded its range in the Baltic countries. D. reticulatus has been detected in 38 new localities in which this species had not been previously reported. The northern border of D. reticulatus in central Europe moved further to the north. New localities (n = 12) with D. reticulatus occurrence have been found in southern Latvia.

Abstract
Canine babesiosis caused by Babesia canis is an emerging infectious disease in Europe. Although previously uncommon, canine babesiosis has become quite frequent in Lithuania during the past decade. In the last few years an increasing number of cases with a wide variety of clinical signs have been recorded throughout the country. In Lithuania the identification of the disease agent in veterinarian clinics is based on a microscopic analysis of size and morphology. To date, no data on the genetic characterization of Babesia species in dogs have been documented for Lithuania. A total of 123 blood samples from dogs showing clinical signs of babesiosis on the basis of veterinary examination were tested for the presence of babesial parasites. Babesia isolated from dogs were detected and characterized by nested-PCR and sequence analysis of a fragment of the 18S rRNA gene. Babesia parasites were detected in blood smears of 94 dogs (76.4%). The molecular analysis revealed the presence of B. canis in 108 dogs (87.8%). Two genotypes of B. canis were distinguished on the basis on two nucleotide (GA → AG) substitutions observed in 18S rRNA gene sequences. The results of the present study provide knowledge of the distribution of B. canis genotypes in dogs in Lithuania, and show the necessity to use a molecular analysis for an accurate diagnosis of canine babesiosis.
