Mapping of heavy metal contamination associated to microplastics marine debris - A case study: Dubai, UAE

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitously detected in the environment. The adverse impact of microplastics on marine life is well documented. Previous research has shown that MPs can adsorb heavy metals, however, this fact has not been investigated along the coast of Dubai, UAE. Elemental composition of MPs debris was determined using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopic (XRF) analysis. The analyzed MPs were extracted from 80 sediment samples collected from the wrack lines of 16 Dubai, UAE beaches. A total of 480 MPs pieces extracted from the samples were analyzed in order to detect heavy metals. The polymer composition was previously confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy, showing that polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) were the most abundant MPs. 14 heavy metals were identified in the samples: Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pd, and Co with different concentrations. Five of them (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb) are priority pollutants according to EPA. Their average concentrations in oxide form were Cr₂O₃ (2.96 %), NiO (0.32 %), CuO (0.45 %), ZnO (0.56 %), and PbO (1.49 %).

Tuning Easy Magnetization Direction and Magnetostatic Interactions in High Aspect Ratio Nanowires

Cobalt nanowires have been synthesized by electrochemical deposition using track-etched anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) templates. Nanowires with varying spacing-to-diameter ratios were prepared, and their magnetic properties were investigated. It is found that the nanowires’ easy magnetization direction switches from parallel to perpendicular to the nanowire growth direction when the nanowire’s spacing-to-diameter ratio is reduced below 0.7, or when the nanowires’ packing density is increased above 5%. Upon further reduction in the spacing-to-diameter ratio, nanowires’ magnetic properties exhibit an isotropic behavior. Apart from shape anisotropy, strong dipolar interactions among nanowires facilitate additional uniaxial anisotropy, favoring an easy magnetization direction perpendicular to their growth direction. The magnetic interactions among the nanowires were studied using the standard method of remanence curves. The demagnetization curves and Delta m (Δm) plots showed that the nanowires interact via dipolar interactions that act as an additional uniaxial anisotropy favoring an easy magnetization direction perpendicular to the nanowire growth direction. The broadening of the dipolar component of Δm plots indicate an increase in the switching field distribution with the increase in the nanowires’ diameter. Our findings provide an important insight into the magnetic behavior of cobalt nanowires, meaning that it is crucial to design them according to the specific requirements for the application purposes.

Evaluation of microplastics in beach sediments along the coast of Dubai, UAE

Microplastic contamination in beach sediments along coast of Dubai is un-documented. In this study, microplastic contamination in beach sediments collected from the wrack lines of 16 beaches in Dubai was evaluated. Five samples were collected from each beach along a 100 m stretch using a 0.5 m by 0.5 m, quadrant. The number, color, and shape of microplastics were documented. The polymer types of large fibers and strings were identified through FT-IR analysis. 480 microplastics from each of the 16 beaches were selected to detect heavy metals using XRF analysis. The results showed that the average weight of microplastic is 0.33 mg per gram of dry sediment (or 953 mg·m^-2) and the number of microplastic is 59.71 items per kg of dry sediment (or 165 items·m^-2). Blue and fibrous microplastics were dominant. Polyethylene strings and fibers were abundantly found. 13 heavy metals were identified of which five are priority pollutants.

Signal-to-noise ratios of 6 intraoral digital sensors

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study was to compare the signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of 6 intraoral direct digital sensors. The sensors were Visualix 1, Visualix 2, DenOptix, Computed Dental Radiography (CDR), CDR APS, and Digora.

STUDY DESIGN

The sensors were exposed by using a dental x-ray machine operating at 50 kV, 8 mA and various exposure times. The phantom used was a hole measuring 1 mm in diameter and 1.25 mm in depth, drilled in a 10-mm-thick aluminum block. Digital images were transferred as 8-bit tagged image file format files and analyzed by using a personal computer.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS

SNR values increased up to a maximum value at a certain exposure level and then, depending on the system, either decreased or maintained a high level with increased exposure. The Digora system produced the highest SNR values over a large exposure range, whereas the Visualix 2 and DenOptix systems produced the lowest SNR values. The 2 CDR sensors produced rather high SNRs but over a very small exposure range.

Hydroxyapatite Granule/Carrier Composites Promote New Bone Formation in Cortical Defects

BACKGROUND

A great deal of interest has been focused on finding substitutes for autogenous bone grafts. Among the most interesting materials are different calcium phosphate compositions (e.g., hydroxyapatite [HA]), due to their biocompatible properties in hard and soft tissue.

PURPOSE

The bone response to porous ceramic HA granules in combination with two lipid and one polysaccharide carrier was evaluated in an experimental bone defect model in rabbits.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Circular defects (Ø 4 mm) were made in both tibias of 32 rabbits. The 64 defects were divided into four groups. Group A was augmented with a composite of HA granules and a phospholipid-diacetyl-glycerol carrier, group B with HA granules and a phospholipid carrier, group C received HA granules and a sodium hyaluronan carrier, and group D served as control. The animals were killed after 6 weeks and ground sections were evaluated using light microscopic morphometry. X-ray microfluorescence (XRF) was applied in order to evaluate the suitability of this method to examine bone-biomaterial interfaces. Calcium distribution was studied using x-ray fluorescence line scans at selected interface regions of two sections in group B.

RESULTS

The HA/phospholipid composites were easier to shape and handle than the HA/hyaluronan composite. Group A had 36% newly formed bone area within the defect. Groups B and C showed significantly more newly formed bone within the defect (47% and 49%, respectively) compared to the control group (31%). The XRF analysis revealed that the amount of calcium in the newly formed bone was similar to that observed for the HA granules and slightly lower when compared to the mature, lamellar bone.

CONCLUSIONS

Synchrotron radiation may be a new, suitable technique to study the interface between bone and biomaterials with regard to mineral content. The results suggest that HA granule/lipid and HA granule/hyaluronan composites have interesting properties as bone-substitute materials.

Assessments of the physical performance of 2 generations of 2 direct digital intraoral sensors

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the performance of 4 intraoral direct digital sensors regarding their fundamental physical characteristics. The sensors are made by Schick Technologies Inc (Long Island City, NY) and Gendex Dental Systems (Milan, Italy).

STUDY DESIGN

The sensors were exposed by using a Prostyle dental x-ray machine (Planmeca Oy, Helsinki, Finland) operating at 50 kV, 8 mA and various exposure times. Three test phantoms were used: a homogeneous 10-mm thick aluminum block, an aluminum block with a pattern of holes of varying sizes, and a resolving power target. Digital images were transferred as 8 bit TIFF files and analyzed by using a personal computer.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS

Some improvements could be observed in the physical performance of the new generation of direct digital radiographic sensors when compared with the earlier generation. Smaller pixels and higher quantum efficiency have improved sensor performance.
