Aggregation and thermoresponsive properties of new star block copolymers with a cholic acid core

Poly(allyl glycidyl ether) (PAGE) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) blocks were sequentially grown via anionic polymerization to form four block copolymer arms on a cholic acid (CA) core, yielding star block copolymers (CA(AGE(8)-b-EG(n))(4)) with low polydispersities (ca. 1.05). The introduction of PAGE segments into CA(PEG)(4) significantly reduced their crystallinity. The polymers can aggregate in water at room temperature above their critical aggregation concentration. The copolymers are thermoresponsive; their behavior in aqueous solutions was studied by the use of UV-visible spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. Their cloud points vary from 13 to 55 °C with increasing length of the PEG segments. Double thermoresponsive behavior was observed with short PEG segments because of a two-step transition process: small micelles are formed upon heating and then further aggregate into micellar clusters through the association of PEG chains.

Self-assembly of discotic mesogens in solution and in liquid crystalline phases: effects of substituent position and hydrogen bonding

The effects of functional group position on the phase behavior of discotic mesogens was examined for a series of dibenzophenazine derivatives bearing a carboxylic acid, methyl carboxylate, or nitro group. In all cases, changing the position of the group from the "top" to the "side" of the aromatic core led to dramatic differences in the phase behavior, both in terms of the stability of the liquid crystalline phases as well as the types of mesophases formed. For the non-hydrogen bonding ester and nitro derivatives, moving the substituent to the side of the core led to a lowering of the clearing temperatures or loss of liquid crystallinity. Carboxylic acid derivatives exhibit broad mesophases irrespective of the position of the acid group, but mesogens bearing this group on the side of the core exclusively form Col(h) phases, whereas those with an acid group on the top of the core exhibit more varied mesomorphism, with the formation of Col(h), Col(r), and nematic phases. Contrary to expectations, the presence of a carboxylic acid group on the side of the core does not appear to lead to the formation of dimeric structures in the liquid crystalline phase, although the columnar structures appear to be stabilized by intermolecular hydrogen bonding along the columns. These derivatives also form pi-stacked dimers in solution; the structure of these dimers are consistent with the proposed structure of the columnar phases.

A simple and inexpensive capillary furnace for variable-temperature X-ray diffraction

An inexpensive capillary furnace has been developed for variable-temperature X-ray diffraction in transmission geometry of air-stable liquid crystals and other materials. It offers temperature control with fluctuations of less than ±1 K in the range of interest for these samples, from room temperature to near 573 K. Phases can be accessed through heating or cooling with no significant overshooting of the target temperature. The furnace is designed to fit on a classical goniometer, and can be controlled by any standard temperature controller. The simple design of this furnace means that it is both inexpensive to build and easy to operate.

Structural Factors Controlling the Self-Assembly of Columnar Liquid Crystals

A series of disc-shaped molecules were prepared by the condensation of 1,2-diamines with 2,3,6,7-tetrakis(hexyloxy)phenanthrene-9,10-dione to investigate the relationship between changes in molecular structure and the self-assembly of columnar liquid crystalline phases. A comparison of compounds with different core sizes indicated that molecules with larger aromatic cores had a greater propensity to form columnar phases, as did compounds substituted with electron-withdrawing groups. In contrast, molecules with electron-donating substituents were nonmesogenic. The clearing temperature of columnar phases increased linearly with the electron-withdrawing ability of the substituents, as quantified by Hammett sigma-values. The observed trends can be rationalized in terms of the strength of pi-pi interactions between aromatic cores in the liquid crystalline phases and suggest that both electrostatic interactions and dispersion forces play important roles in the self-assembly of these materials.

Polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid) vesicle size control using solution properties and hydrophilic block length

Polymeric vesicles have attracted considerable attention in recent years, since they are a model for biological membranes and have versatile structures with several practical applications. In this study, we prepare vesicles from polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid) block copolymer in dioxane/water and dioxane/THF/water mixtures. We then examine the ability of additives (such as NaCl, HCl, or NaOH), solvent composition, and hydrophilic block length to control vesicle size. Using turbidity measurements and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) we show that larger vesicles can be prepared from a given copolymer by adding NaCl or HCl, while adding NaOH yields smaller vesicles. The solvent composition (ratio of dioxane to THF, as well as the water content) can also determine the vesicle size. From a given copolymer, smaller vesicles can be prepared by increasing the THF content in the THF/dioxane solvent mixture. In a given solvent mixture, vesicle size increases with water content, but such an increase is most pronounced when dioxane is used as the solvent. In THF-rich solutions, on the other hand, vesicle size changes only slightly with the water concentration. As to the effect of the acrylic acid block length, the results show that block copolymers with shorter hydrophilic blocks assemble into larger vesicles. The effect of additives and solvent composition on vesicle size is related to their influence on chain repulsion and aggregation number, whereas the effect of acrylic acid block length occurs because of the relationship among the block length, the width of the molecular weight distribution, and the stabilization of the vesicle curvature.
