Nanoscale heat transport through the hetero-interface of SrRuO3 thin films

A SrRuO₃ thin film has been widely used as a metal electrode in electronic devices based on transition metal oxides, and hence it is important to understand its thermal transport properties to minimize a thermal degradation problem during the device operation. Using the time-domain thermoreflectance measurement technique, we investigate the cross-plane thermal conductivity of the SrRuO₃ thin films with a thickness variation from 1 μm to 8 nm. We find that the thermal conductivity is reduced from about 6 W m^-1 K^-1 for the 1 μm thick film to about 1.2 W m^-1 K^-1 for the 8 nm thick film, and attribute this behavior to the boundary scattering of thermal carriers which originally have the mean free path of about 20 nm in a bulk state. Also, we observe a clear dip behavior of the thermal conductivity in the intermediate thickness around 30 nm which suggests an existence of a strong scattering source other than the film boundary. We explain this result by considering an additional interfacial scattering at the tetragonal-orthorhombic phase boundary which is formed during the strain relaxation with an increase of the film thickness.

Detection of bovine coronavirus in nasal swab of non-captive wild water deer, Korea

Bovine coronavirus (BCoV) is a causative agent of respiratory and enteric diseases in cattle and calves. BCoV infection was also evident in captive wild ruminants. Recently, water deer are recognized as the most common wildlife to approach farmhouses and livestock barns in Korea. Therefore, we investigated 77 nasal swab samples from non‐captive wild water deer (Hydropotes inermis) between November 2016 and September 2017 and identified three samples positive for coronavirus, indicating potential for respiratory shedding. The full genomic sequences of the water deer coronavirus were closely related to BCoV (>98%). Therefore, effective biosecurity system in bovine farms would be necessary to prevent contact between farm ruminants and free‐ranging wild water deer.

Experimental infection of clade 1.1.2 (H5N1), clade 2.3.2.1c (H5N1) and clade 2.3.4.4 (H5N6) highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses in dogs

Since the emergence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 in Asia, the haemagglutinin (HA) gene of this virus lineage has continued to evolve in avian populations, and H5N1 lineage viruses now circulate concurrently worldwide. Dogs may act as an intermediate host, increasing the potential for zoonotic transmission of influenza viruses. Virus transmission and pathologic changes in HPAI clade 1.1.2 (H5N1)-, 2.3.2.1c (H5N1)- and 2.3.4.4 (H5N6)-infected dogs were investigated. Mild respiratory signs and antibody response were shown in dogs intranasally infected with the viruses. Lung histopathology showed lesions that were associated with moderate interstitial pneumonia in the infected dogs. In this study, HPAI H5N6 virus replication in dogs was demonstrated for the first time. Dogs have been suspected as a "mixing vessel" for reassortments between avian and human influenza viruses to occur. The replication of these three subtypes of the H5 lineage of HPAI viruses in dogs suggests that dogs could serve as intermediate hosts for avian-human influenza virus reassortment if they are also co-infected with human influenza viruses.

Detection of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Like, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-Like Bat Coronaviruses and Group H Rotavirus in Faeces of Korean Bats

Bat species around the world have recently been recognized as major reservoirs of several zoonotic viruses, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS‐CoV), Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS‐CoV), Nipah virus and Hendra virus. In this study, consensus primer‐based reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reactions (RT‐PCRs) and high‐throughput sequencing were performed to investigate viruses in bat faecal samples collected at 11 natural bat habitat sites from July to December 2015 in Korea. Diverse coronaviruses were first detected in Korean bat faeces, including alphacoronaviruses, SARS‐CoV‐like and MERS‐CoV‐like betacoronaviruses. In addition, we identified a novel bat rotavirus belonging to group H rotavirus which has only been described in human and pigs until now. Therefore, our results suggest the need for continuing surveillance and additional virological studies in domestic bat.

Cell cycle-dependent Cdc25C phosphatase determines cell survival by regulating apoptosis signal-regulating kinase 1

Cdc25C (cell division cycle 25C) phosphatase triggers entry into mitosis in the cell cycle by dephosphorylating cyclin B-Cdk1. Cdc25C exhibits basal phosphatase activity during interphase and then becomes activated at the G2/M transition after hyperphosphorylation on multiple sites and dissociation from 14-3-3. Although the role of Cdc25C in mitosis has been extensively studied, its function in interphase remains elusive. Here, we show that during interphase Cdc25C suppresses apoptosis signal-regulating kinase 1 (ASK1), a member of mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase kinase kinase family that mediates apoptosis. Cdc25C phosphatase dephosphorylates phospho-Thr-838 in the activation loop of ASK1 in vitro and in interphase cells. In addition, knockdown of Cdc25C increases the activity of ASK1 and ASK1 downstream targets in interphase cells, and overexpression of Cdc25C inhibits ASK1-mediated apoptosis, suggesting that Cdc25C binds to and negatively regulates ASK1. Furthermore, we showed that ASK1 kinase activity correlated with Cdc25C activation during mitotic arrest and enhanced ASK1 activity in the presence of activated Cdc25C resulted from the weak association between ASK1 and Cdc25C. In cells synchronized in mitosis following nocodazole treatment, phosphorylation of Thr-838 in the activation loop of ASK1 increased. Compared with hypophosphorylated Cdc25C, which exhibited basal phosphatase activity in interphase, hyperphosphorylated Cdc25C exhibited enhanced phosphatase activity during mitotic arrest, but had significantly reduced affinity to ASK1, suggesting that enhanced ASK1 activity in mitosis was due to reduced binding of hyperphosphorylated Cdc25C to ASK1. These findings suggest that Cdc25C negatively regulates proapoptotic ASK1 in a cell cycle-dependent manner and may play a role in G2/M checkpoint-mediated apoptosis.

Crystal structure of proteolytic fragments of the redox-sensitive Hsp33 with constitutive chaperone activity

Heat shock protein 33 (Hsp33) inhibits aggregation of partially denatured proteins during oxidative stress. The chaperone activity of Hsp33 is unique among heat shock proteins because the activity is reversibly regulated by cellular redox status. We report here the crystal structure of the N-terminal region of Hsp33 fragments with constitutive chaperone activity. The structure reveals that the N-terminal portion of Hsp33 forms a tightly associated dimer formed by a domain crossover. A concave groove on the dimeric surface contains an elongated hydrophobic patch that could potentially bind denatured protein substrates. The termini of the subunits are located near the hydrophobic patch, indicating that the cleaved C-terminal domain may shield the hydrophobic patch in an inactive state. Two of the four conserved zinc-coordinating cysteines are in the end of the N-terminal domain, and the other two are in the cleaved C-terminal domain. The structural information and subsequent biochemical characterizations suggest that the redox switch of Hsp33 occurs by a reversible dissociation of the C-terminal regulatory domain through oxidation of zinc-coordinating cysteines and zinc release.

Image coding with uniform and piecewise-uniform vector quantizers

New lattice vector quantizer design procedures for nonuniform sources that yield excellent performance while retaining the structure required for fast quantization are described. Analytical methods for truncating and scaling lattices to be used in vector quantization are given, and an analytical technique for piecewise-linear multidimensional companding is presented. The uniform and piecewise-uniform lattice vector quantizers are then used to quantize the discrete cosine transform coefficients of images, and their objective and subjective performance and complexity are contrasted with other lattice vector quantizers and with LBG training-mode designs.
