Suicide Attempts Among French and Brazilian Adolescents Admitted to an Emergency Room. A Comparative Study of Risk and Protective Factors

BACKGROUND

Suicide is the second most common cause of preventable mortality among Brazilian and French adolescents. The aim of the current study was to compare the main risk and protective factors associated with a suicide attempt (SA) and to highlight differences based on geographical characteristics.

METHOD

We compared a Brazilian sample (N = 45) of adolescents admitted to the emergency room of a public hospital in São Paulo for SA to a French sample (N = 320) of adolescents hospitalized for SA across 5 paediatric departments. Then, we ran several multivariate models to examine how each selected variable was related to geographic origin and to the other selected variables linked to geographic origin.

RESULTS

The two samples presented no significant differences regarding gender, age or schooling. Both samples had high rates of depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, substance use, disruptive disorders, borderline psychopathology, and lifetime SAs. However, the Brazilian sample presented significantly higher levels of psychopathology and had more insecure attachment relationships (fearful and detached), whereas the French sample had a more secure attachment style. Brazilian adolescents had more recourse to spiritual beliefs and spiritual support, whereas the French adolescents had higher scores on the Reasons for Living Inventory and used more help-seeking strategies from their social network, mainly close friends. Multivariate models showed that two productive coping strategies (seeking spiritual support and social action) and the dependence score were significantly associated with membership in the Brazilian cohort, whereas a secure attachment style and depression severity (evaluated by the Beck Depression Inventory) were significantly associated with membership in the French cohort.

CONCLUSION

Despite presenting similar psychopathologies, Brazilian adolescents presented a more insecure attachment style and used the religious kind of coping more commonly than their French counterparts. We hypothesize that religion may compensate for the social vulnerabilities present in a middle-income country such as Brazil. More transcultural studies may help to elucidate this phenomenon.

Temporal and behavioral variability in cannabinoid receptor expression in outbred mice submitted to ethanol-induced locomotor sensitization paradigm

BACKGROUND

There is a close relationship between the endocannabinoid system and alcoholism. This study investigated possible differential expression of cannabinoid receptors CB1 (CB1R) and CB2 (CB2R) in an outbred mice strain displaying behavioral variability to ethanol (EtOH)-induced locomotor sensitization.

METHODS

Male adult Swiss mice treated chronically with EtOH (2 g/kg, i.p., daily for 21 days) were classified as "EtOH_High" or "EtOH_Low" according to their locomotor activity after the 21st EtOH injection. A control group was similarly injected with saline. Temporal analysis of CB1R and CB2R immunoreactivity was performed in 3 different occasions: (i) at the end of chronic EtOH treatment, (ii) on the fifth day of EtOH withdrawal, and (iii) after EtOH challenge.

RESULTS

Overall, no differences were seen between experimental groups regarding the CB1R at the end of acquisition. However, there were decreases in CB2R in the prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus in EtOH_Low mice. On the fifth day of withdrawal, only EtOH_High mice presented increase in CB1R. Nonetheless, CB2R up-regulation was observed in both EtOH_High and EtOH_Low mice. EtOH challenge counteracted CB1R and CBR2 up-regulation, mainly in the EtOH_High, in structures related to emotionality, such as prefrontal cortex, ventral tegmental area, amygdala, striatum, and hippocampus.

CONCLUSIONS

There are different patterns of cannabinoid receptor expression during locomotor sensitization paradigm, at both temporal and behavioral perspectives. We hypothesize that CB2R down-regulation might be related to resilience to develop locomotor sensitization, while CB1R up-regulation relates to withdrawal aspects in sensitized mice.

Validade de critério e confiabilidade da versão brasileira de uma escala de rastreamento para dependência de sexo

INTRODUÇÃO: Algumas formas de comportamento sexual podem assumir características dos comportamentos aditivos, merecendo a denominação de dependência de sexo. Este artigo descreve a adaptação, a validação e o estudo da confiabilidade de uma escala de 25 questões, desenvolvida nos Estados Unidos por Carnes em 1989, tendo como finalidade a identificação de casos de dependência de sexo. MÉTODO: Foi constituída uma amostra de 71 indivíduos, sendo 33 pacientes e 38 voluntários, que respondeu às questões da escala de rastreamento e aos critérios diagnósticos adaptados a partir do DSM IV para dependência de sexo. RESULTADOS: A versão brasileira da escala apresentou seu melhor desempenho ao se utilizar o ponto de corte 6, para o qual a sensibilidade obtida foi 0,83 e a especificidade 0,75. A consistência interna do instrumento foi de 0,89 (alfa de Cronbach). CONCLUSÃO: O uso desse tipo de instrumento dentro de um contexto cultural diferente daquele no qual o mesmo foi desenvolvido requereu o aprofundamento no estudo das propriedades psicométricas da versão adaptada.
