Abstract
To compare the accuracy of breast lesion size measurement of cone-beam breast-CT (CBBCT), digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) and full-field digital mammography (FFDM).Patients scheduled for mastectomy due to at least 1 malignant breast lesion were included. Mastectomy specimens were examined by CBBCT, DBT, FFDM, and histopathology.A total of 94 lesions (40 patients) were included. Histopathological analyses revealed 47 malignant, 6 high-risk, and 41 benign lesions. Mean histopathological lesion size was 20.8 mm (range 2-100). Mean absolute size deviation from histopathology was largest for FFDM (5.3 ± 6.7 mm) and smallest for CBBCT 50 mA, high-resolution mode (4.3 ± 6.7 mm). Differences between imaging modalities did not reach statistical significance (P = .85).All imaging methods tend to overestimate breast lesion size compared to histopathological gold standard. No significant differences were found regarding size measurements, although in tendency CBBCT showed better lesion detection and cT classification over FFDM.

Abstract
Real-time PCR methods for the detection of RHD and the C, c, and E allele of RHCE were applied for the prediction of fetal Rh phenotype using maternal plasma. In one of 36 samples investigated the DNA extraction failed. When we tested the remaining 35 samples for Rh antigens which were absent on the mother's red cells, the fetal D-status was correctly determined in 26 of 27 cases (1 false negative). Fetal C was tested correctly in 23 samples, c was true positive in the only c-negative woman and the fetal E-status was correctly determined in 35 cases. In conclusion real-time PCR of maternal plasma is a non-invasive method to determine fetal RH genotype. However, more studies are required for routine applications because the method is not 100% sensitive.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Since 1989 the use of iodized salt has been allowed in Germany, additional supplementation with iodide tablets has been recommended during pregnancy and lactation. This study was undertaken to clarify whether the iodine intake of neonates and young infants improved since then. PATIENTS AND METHODS In the first part of the study the urinary iodine excretion of 52 newborns and their mothers in 1998 was compared to data of similar studies 1983 in the area of Göttingen and 1982 in the areas of Heidelberg and Rothenburg, Germany. All these are geographically low-iodine areas. In the second part the iodine supply of infants in 1998-1999 under feeding with mother's milk or formulas in 1998 and 1999 was obtained by measuring iodide concentrations in urine and milk using a high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. RESULTS 45% of pregnant women were without iodide supplementation in 1998. In 1998 the median urinary iodide concentration during the first week of life was 4.3 micrograms/dl, which was more than twice that found in 1983 (1.75 micrograms/dl). Infants feeding by mother's milk without maternal iodine supplementation or by semi-elementary diet had the lowest urinary iodine excretion, whereas significantly higher values were measured when feeding formulas for term or preterm infants. CONCLUSIONS The iodine intake of newborns has markedly improved during 15 years. The WHO criterias for adequate iodine supply (TSH < 5 microU/ml and urinary iodine >/ = 10 micrograms/dl) were only partly fulfilled in Göttingen indicating that a mild iodine deficiency still exists with the risk of iodine deficiency disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to evaluate prospectively the sonomorphological feature of histologically verified endometriotic cysts. METHODS Transvaginal sonography was performed in 122 patients. Age distribution of the patients, and size and sonomorphology of the lesions were analyzed. RESULTS Eighty-one percent of the endometriotic cysts occurred in patients between 31 and 50 years old with a peak of 29% between 31 and 35 years. Most of the cysts (81%) ranged between 30 and 59 mm in diameter. Forty-three percent of the endometriotic cysts were observed as monolocular cysts with internal echoes. More than half of the findings were observed to be multilocular, partially without any internal echos, partially even with solid parts or purely solid. CONCLUSION The so-called 'typically' monolocular smooth-walled endometriotic cyst with internal echoes was only found in 43% of the cases. However, data from the literature show that one cannot assume even this special entity to represent endometriomas. Regarding all monolocular cysts with homogeneous internal echoes, one has to be aware of a great amount of functional cysts and a non-calculable residual risk of malignancy.

Abstract
In a prospective, randomised study, 40 primi- and plurigravida were treated either intracervically with 50 micrograms Sulprostone gel or vaginally with a pessary containing 1 mg Gemeprost in order to soften the cervix prior to first trimester termination of pregnancy. Curettage was performed on average 6.0 and 3.2 hours, respectively, after prostaglandin administration. For objective demonstration of the priming effect, the force required for dilatation of the cervical canal was measured in Newton by a special tonometer before prostaglandin treatment and before operation. The free passability of the cervical canal, the maximal dilatability with a force of 10 N and the increase in dilatability after local prostaglandin application were measured. A modified visual analogue scale was used to evaluate the subjective pain experience. During the time between administration and curettage, no abortion occurred in any of the patients. There were no statistically significant differences between both groups regarding the free passability and the maximal dilatability, however, the increase in dilatability was significantly greater in the Gemeprost group. The visual analogue scale allows the patient to quantify, at least to some extent, her experience of pain, but there were no differences in the rate of uterine cramps between both groups; gastrointestinal symptoms did not occur. Both methods were found to be equally efficient; the advantages of Gemeprost are the ease of administration and the short application-curettage interval; however, the cost for one Gemeprost application is nearly 6-fold higher than that of one Sulprostone gel application.

Abstract
The echo-enhancing effect of an ultrasound contrast medium (Levovist) in color Doppler sonography of small vessels in ovarian tumors was studied in a group of 30 women. The vascularity of adnexal masses with a suspicion of primary carcinoma in 3 and benign lesions in 27 cases was investigated before and after injection of 300 mg/ml of Levovist. In 17 cases color flow mapping showed increased vascularity either in the cystic wall or in solid structures within the tumor. In all patients we observed enhancement of Doppler signal intensity. Our results show that Levovist facilitates waveform analysis in very small vessels with poor velocity patterns.

Abstract
The improvements in laparoscopic techniques have led to the development of laparoscopic assisted hysterectomy. We report on our experience since 1991 with this method on 30 patients using a Multifire Endo GIA 30. After cutting the upper ligaments and the uterine vessels, the uterus was removed through the vagina. To avoid urological complications, the distance between the ureter and the uterus was determined preoperatively by a combined sonographical-radiological procedure. To be absolutely safe from ureter lesions, it is recommended to use an illuminated ureter catheter. Laparoscopic hysterectomy should be used in selected cases only. In a critical indication situation with this technique, it is possible to avoid abdominal hysterectomy without loss of safety because of the excellent intraabdominal view, similar to laparotomy. There were no major complications with this procedure, except one ureter lesion, which was recognised intraoperatively. All patients remained in the hospital for only four days after the operation.

Abstract
This investigation contains a statistical evaluation of sonographic results concerning fetal subcutaneous adipose tissue aiming to examine and assess the relevance of this new sonographic parameter for the detection of fetal growth retardation, resp. fetal hypertrophy during pregnancy. The diagrammatic presentation of the growth of the subcutaneous adipose tissue of eutrophic fetuses shows low validity for the differentiation of hyper- and hypotrophic fetuses. To enable the differentiation between "asymmetric" and "symmetric" types of retardation, the different degrees of growth of the subcutaneous adipose tissue of hypertrophic fetuses have to be taken into consideration. The relation between birthweight and growth of the subcutaneous adipose tissue shows no distinct differentiation of the birthweight, however, presents overlapping categories of the birthweight for diagnostic orientation.
