Abstract
Serotonin [5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)] modulates ovarian function. The precursor of 5-HT, 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), has been used to treat depression. However, the effects of 5-HTP on ovarian and reproductive physiology remain unknown. In this research, we analysed the impact of 5-HTP on the monoaminergic system and its interactions with the reproductive axis and ovarian estradiol secretion when administered by distinct routes. Female rats 30 days of age were injected with 5-HTP i.p. (100 mg/kg), into the ovarian bursa (1.5 µg/40 µL) or into the median raphe nucleus (20 µg/2.5 µL) and were killed 60 or 120 min after injection. As controls, we used rats of the same age injected with vehicle (0.9% NaCl). Monoamine, gonadotrophin and steroid ovarian hormone concentrations were measured. The injection of 5-HTP either i.p. or directly into the ovarian bursa increased the concentrations of 5-HT and the metabolite 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid in the ovary. For both routes of administration, the serum concentration of estradiol increased. After i.p. injection of 5-HTP, the concentrations of luteinizing hormone were decreased and follicle-stimulating hormone increased after 120 min. Micro-injection of 5-HTP into the median raphe nucleus increased the concentrations of 5-HT in the anterior hypothalamus and dopamine in the medial hypothalamus after 120 min. Our results suggest that the administration of 5-HTP either i.p. or directly into the ovarian bursa enhances ovarian estradiol secretion.

Abstract
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that affects the secretion of gonadotropins and testosterone. In prepubertal male rats, serotonin has a stimulating role in testosterone secretion. Here, we used prepubertal male rats to study the effects of para-chloroamphetamine (pCA) on circulating testosterone and gonadotropins and markers of apoptosis in germ cells from day 1 to day 5 post-treatment. The intraperitoneal administration of pCA induced a significant reduction in concentrations of hypothalamic serotonin and circulating testosterone, but gonadotropins were not affected. In the seminiferous epithelium of pCA-treated rats, increased the number of germ cells positive to markers of apoptosis, concomitantly with alterations in morphometry and the presence of multinucleated germ cells. Levels of testosterone were reduced starting from 1 day after pCA was administered. The time window between the administration of the pCA and collection of samples was sufficient to detect changes in testosterone levels, in contrast with a previous work where no changes were found. There was a possible relationship between the reduction of testosterone and an increase in the number of germ cells positive to apoptosis markers. However, the mechanism that links pCA-testosterone-germ cell positive to markers of apoptosis is unknown. Our outcomes support the view that pCA exposure during the prepubertal stage has an acute impact on testosterone levels and affects the structure and physiology of seminiferous epithelium.

Abstract
Amphetamine derivatives negatively impact serotonin (5-HT) production, which triggers apoptosis in different tissues, depending on the receptor they bind. 5-HT in the ovary stimulates estradiol secretion, a survival factor of granulosa cells. The effect of amphetamine derivatives on the serotonergic system of the ovary and follicular development is unknown. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the effects of p-chloroamphetamine (pCA), derived from amphetamines, on estradiol production, follicular development, apoptosis of granulosa cells, and serotonin 5-HT7 receptor (R5-HT7) expression. Female rats (30 days old) were injected with 10mg/kg of pCA intraperitoneally and were euthanized 48 or 120h after treatment. The concentration of 5-HT in the hypothalamus decreased at 48 and 120h after treatment and in the ovary at 120h. The serum concentration of estradiol decreased at all times studied. Follicular atresia, TUNEL-positive (apoptotic) granulosa cells and Bax expression were elevated by pCA, but none of these effects was associated with R5-HT7 expression. These results suggest that pCA induces the dysregulation of the serotonergic system in the hypothalamus and the ovary, negatively impacting estradiol production and follicular development.

Abstract
To evaluate the effect of immunocastration on carcass and meat characteristics, Holstein bulls aged between 7 and 8months with a live weight of 232±1.19kg were given two separate treatments, placebo (intact bulls) versus Bopriva, and then slaughtered after approximately 239days of fattening. While the testosterone levels in intact bulls remained at 0.42ng/ml throughout the study, by day 181, differences (P<0.05) were observed in immunized bulls, with values of 0.21ng/ml. The carcasses of animals treated with Bopriva recorded both a higher hot carcass weight (HCW) and a cold carcass weight (CCW), as well as higher dorsal fat density, marbling and KPH (P<0.05); however, no differences (P>0.05) were observed in the Longissimus lumborum area. No significant differences (P>0.05) were recorded between the treatments for pH, L*, a*, b* C* and H*. The carcasses of the animals treated with Bopriva were heavier, with higher dorsal fat density and marbling score.

Abstract
To elucidate the role of serotonin in the onset of puberty, the effects of both systemic and in-ovarian bursa administration of serotonin on the neuroendocrine mechanism that modulates the onset of puberty, follicular development and first ovulation were evaluated. Two experiments were carried out. For the first, 25 or 37.5 mg kg–1 of bodyweight of serotonin creatinine sulfate was administered by a subcutaneous route to 30-day-old female rats. In the second experiment, serotonin creatinine sulfate was administered directly into the ovarian bursa of 34-day-old female rats. Systemic administration of 25 or 37.5 mg kg–1 of serotonin creatinine sulfate induced a delay in the ages of vaginal opening and first vaginal oestrus, a decrease in the number of ovulating animals, and serum concentrations of FSH, LH, oestradiol and progesterone. An increase in the number of Class 3 (>500 μm) and atretic follicles was observed in the ovaries of these animals. The administration of serotonin creatinine sulfate in the ovarian bursa did not modify the onset of puberty and ovulation, but a reduced serum concentration of oestradiol was observed. Our results suggest that serotonin acts on the components of the hypothalamus–hypophysis–ovary axis by modulating follicular development, ovarian functions and the onset of puberty.

Abstract
A one year round survey was conducted for isolation of free living amoebae (FLA) in the city of San Luis Potosi, (SLP), Mexico, which is placed in a desert environment. Samples were taken by modified impinger method and cultivated in laboratory conditions for FLA isolation following a week period of rehidration. 57 strains were isolated, 39% belonged to Acanthamoeba genus (which is important because it bears opportunistic pathogens that produce amoebic keratitis and granulomatous amoebic encephalitis in humans), 16% to Hartmannella, 9% to Vahlkampfia and the other proportion was divided among 6 other genera. The isolations were more abundant during dry season and the main genera were present in all four stands. The difference among them was the species variety which is discused as connected with abundance of organic wastes and lack of urbanization near the stations.

Abstract
Vincristine was inadvertently injected into a thigh of three children. In each case the accident occurred as a result of the mixing of a syringe containing vincristine with a syringe of L-asparaginase which the patient was scheduled to receive on the same day. Within minutes, each patient was treated topically with cold compresses and the area was infiltrated with a solution of 8.4% sodium bicarbonate. Only one patient had discomfort of the thigh after the injection, none of the patients have had any sequelae, either acute or delayed. Measures to avoid mistaken injection of vincristine for asparaginase are readily achievable and have prevented recurrences of intramuscular vincristine administration at the institutions where they have been implemented. Nonetheless, other instances of intramuscular vincristine injection are anticipated and should be rapidly recognized and quickly managed with local applications of cold and sodium bicarbonate.

Abstract
A patient whose nontoxic autonomously functioning thyroid adenoma had been stable for at least 3 yr developed enlargement of the nodule and hyperthyroidism. It was assumed the hyperthyroidism was caused by evolving toxicity in the autonomous adenoma, but imaging showed the nodule had undergone infarction and the hyperthyroidism was secondary to Graves' disease. This case demonstrates the necessity of thyroid imaging in patients with nontoxic autonomously functioning thyroid adenomas when there is a change in nodule size or thyroid function which requires treatment.

Abstract
The authors report on an infant suspected of having been abused, who presented with periorbital edema and ecchymoses (clinical "raccoon eyes"). The pattern of the nuclear medicine bone scan suggested neuroblastoma rather than trauma. Both the bone scan and the subsequent MIBG scan revealed multiple abnormalities, including markedly increased activity around the orbits, that we termed the scintigraphic raccoon eyes sign. In addition, the grossly abnormal MIBG scan demonstrated avid uptake of MIBG throughout the entire skeleton with essentially complete absence of visualization of the liver and heart (the MIBG super scan ). These signs have not previously been described in an infant or a child with neuroblastoma.

Abstract
A protozoological survey was done to isolate free-living amoebae from swimming pools and physiotherapy tubs in Mexico City. Amoebae were isolated by culture in nonnutritive agar medium combined with Escherichia coli. Identification of the isolates was done by morphology using specialized taxonomic keys and by isoelectric focusing of total proteins and isoenzymes in agarose. Pathogenicity of the isolates was determined in 3-week-old mice by intracerebral and intranasal inoculations. Statistical tools were used to determine the existence of significant differences on the incidence and diversity of the isolates in relation to the two types of water bodies analyzed. Water and environmental temperatures, pH, and chloride concentrations were determined at each sampling site. Twenty-nine amoebic strains from eight genera were isolated. Most frequently found were specimens of the genera (Acanthamoeba (with four pathogenic strains), Vahlkampfia, Hartmannella, and Naegleria. Amoebae were isolated more frequently in spring and summer, and could not be recovered from pools with chloride levels of 5.31 mg/ml or more. This survey demonstrates that chloride concentrations commonly used in recreative pools and therapy tubs are not sufficient to eliminate viable cysts of most free-living amoebae. Significantly higher numbers of isolates were retrieved from the pools than from the tubs.
