Anti-Cancer Activity of Curcumin on Multiple Myeloma

Multiple Myeloma (MM) is the third most common and deadly hematological malignancy, which is characterized by a progressive monoclonal proliferation within the bone marrow. MM is cytogenetically heterogeneous with numerous genetic and epigenetic alterations, which lead to a wide spectrum of signaling pathways and cell cycle checkpoint aberrations. MM symptoms can be attributed to CRAB features (hyperCalcemia, Renal failure, Anemia, and Bone lesion), which profoundly affect both the Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) and the life expectancy of patients. Despite all enhancement and improvement in therapeutic strategies, MM is almost incurable, and patients suffering from this disease eventually relapse. Curcumin is an active and non-toxic phenolic compound, isolated from the rhizome of Curcuma longa L. It has been widely studied and has a confirmed broad range of therapeutic properties, especially anti-cancer activity, and others, including anti-proliferation, anti-angiogenesis, antioxidant and anti-mutation activities. Curcumin induces apoptosis in cancerous cells and prevents Multidrug Resistance (MDR). Growing evidence concerning the therapeutic properties of curcumin caused a pharmacological impact on MM. It is confirmed that curcumin interferes with various signaling pathways and cell cycle checkpoints, and with oncogenes. In this paper, we summarized the anti- MM effects of curcumin.

Artemisia species as a new candidate for Diabetes therapy: A Comprehensive Review

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease and threatening problem for world health. Allopathic medications are not efficient enough in controlling DM and its complications. Therefore, much attention has been directed towards the traditional medicine system. Plant derived-natural compounds with medicinal properties play an essential role in DM management and treatment. Artemisia is a varied and widespread genus of the family Asteraceae, which has more than 500 species with beneficial economic and therapeutic significance. Electronic databases such as Science Direct, Scopus, Pubmed, Web of Science, medRixv and Wiley were used to search scientific literatures. In folklore medicine, Artemisia species have been widely utilized for diabetes management. Molecular investigations have revealed that the NF-κB suppression, Notch 1 inhibition, cell cycle stop at S+G2/M-phase, enhanced Bax protein concentrations, mitochondrial membrane potential attenuation, activation of p53 and caspase, Bcl-2 regulation, and ROS formation are crucial mechanisms that could be targeted via various Artemisia species. Anti-diabetic effects of single or multiple doses of alcoholic and aqueous extracts of Artemisia species are due to presence of bioactive compounds, and they are completely efficient in lowering levels of blood glucose in experimental examinations. In spite of available anti-diabetic drugs, therapeutic agents obtained from mentioned plants have been used for the treatment of this disease and its complications with less adverse impacts. Taken together, multiple line of evidences indicated that Artemisia species could be introduced as potential therapeutic candidate in the treatment and management of diabetes.

Therapeutic potentials of curcumin in the treatment of non-small-cell lung carcinoma

Non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) is one of the most lethal malignancies that include more than 80% of lung cancer cases worldwide. During the past decades, plants and plant-derived products have attracted great interest in the treatment of various human diseases. Curcumin, the turmeric isolated natural phenolic compound, has shown a promising chemo-preventive and anticancer agent. Numerous studies have shown that curcumin delays the initiation and progression of NSCLC by affecting a wide range of molecular targets and cell signalling pathways including NF-kB, Akt, MAPKS, BCL-2, ROS and microRNAs (miRNAs). However, the poor oral bioavailability and low chemical stability of curcumin remain as major challenges in the utilisation of this compound as a therapeutic agent. Different analogs of curcumin and new delivery systems (e.g., micelles, nanoparticles and liposomes) provided promising solutions to overcome these obstacles and improve curcumin pharmacokinetic profile. The present review focuses on current reported studies about anti-NSCLC effects of curcumin. NSCLC involved miRNAs whose expression is regulated by curcumin has also been discussed. Furthermore, recent researches on the use of curcumin analogs and delivery systems to enhance the curcumin benefits in NSCLC are also described.

Therapeutic potentials of curcumin in the treatment of glioblstoma

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), a greatly aggressive malignancy of the brain, is correlated with a poor prognosis and low rate of survival. Up to now, chemotherapy and radiation therapy after surgical approaches have been the treatments increasing the survival rates. The low efficacy of mentioned therapies as well as their side-effects has forced researchers to explore an appropriate alternative or complementary treatment for glioblastoma. In experimental models, it has been shown that curcumin has therapeutic potentials to fight against GBM. Given that curcumin has pharmacological effects against cancer stem cells, as major causes of resistance to therapy in glioblastoma cells. Moreover, it has been showed that curcumin exerts its therapeutic effects on GBM cells via affecting on apoptosis, oxidant system, and inflammatory pathways. Curcumin would possess a synergistic impact with chemotherapeutic agents. Herein, we summarized the current findings on curcumin as therapeutic agent in the treatment of GBM.
