Abstract
Efficient and effective use of biopolymers, such as starch, has increasingly prompted interest due to the current environmental challenges. However, starch-based composites still show poor ductility along with water and oxygen permeability, which may not meet the requirements for food packaging standards. In this study, modified starch (m-St), isolated from the avocado seed and synthesized with tert-butyl acetoacetate (t-BAA), was embedded into polylactic acid (PLA) to design new eco-friendly composites. The developed biocomposites were found to exhibit high performance with outstanding mechanical properties in conjunction with remarkable light, water vapor, and oxygen blocking features for food packaging applications. PLA/m-St(1:6) 20 wt% composites showed a dramatic increase in elongation at break (EB%) from 3.35 to 27.80 % (about 730 % enhancement) and exhibited remarkable UV-blocking performance from 16.21 to 83.86 % for UVB, relative to pure PLA. Equally importantly, these biocomposites revealed significant improvement in oxygen and water vapor barrier performance by reducing their values from 1331 to 32.9 cc m-2 day-1 (indicating a remarkable reduction of 97.53 %) and 61.9 to 28 g m-2 day-1, respectively. This study can show the great potential of extracting starch from biowaste resources and transforming it into sustainable bio-based composites as a promising solution for food packaging applications.

Abstract
Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) has long been cultivated worldwide as an important crop for oil and protein production. Among the various diseases in peanut plants, wilt diseases caused by soil-borne pathogens such as Ralstonia solanacearum and Verticillium dahliae are especially destructive and substantially diminish both quantity and quality in peanut production (Kokalis-Burelle et al., 1997; Thiessen et al., 2012). In July 2022, wilt symptoms were observed in 1 to 3% of the area of peanut fields in Yeoju-si, Korea (37°23´04.0˝N; 127°33´43.0˝E). The xylem in the stems of the wilted plants was dark brown at the soil-surface, which is a representative symptom of vascular wilt pathogens (Yadeta et al. 2013). To isolate the causative pathogens, the stems exhibiting dark lesions were disinfected with 1% NaOCl for 1 min, rinsed with sterile distilled water, and placed on potato dextrose agar medium. The plates were incubated at 25℃ for 2 days, and white hyphae that grew out from the tissues were subcultured twice on V8 juice agar (V8A) medium. Among the 3 isolates, morphological characteristics of the representative strain YJ1-2 were observed under a microscope. The sporangia were terminal intercalary, filamentous, inflated lobulate, and ranging from 37.4 to 73.6 μm in diameter. The antheridia were diclinous, with clavate, elongate, and crook-necked shapes. The oogonia were mostly globose, with an average of 27.1 μm (range from 20.2 to 35.2 μm, n = 50) in diameter, and mated with one to several antheridia. Both plerotic or aplerotic oospores were observed. Overall, the morphological characteristics of the sporangia, antheridia, oogonia, and oospores indicated that YJ1-2 belongs to the genus Pythium. To genetically characterize YJ1-2, genomic DNA was extracted using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide buffer, and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (cox1) gene were amplified by PCR using primer sets ITS4/ITS5 and OomCoxI-Levlo/ OomCoxI-Levup, respectively (White et al., 1990; Robideau et al. 2011), sequenced, and identified using BLASTN (NCBI, National Center for Biotechnology Information). The ITS sequence (NCBI Acc. No. OR125595) of YJ1-2 has 99% similarity with that of P. myriotylum isolate PY39 (NCBI Acc. No. KX671096). A neighbor-joining phylogenetic tree was constructed from aligned cox1 sequence (NCBI Acc. No. OR224334) of the 10 Pythium species strains including YJ1-2 by CLUSTALW method was used as an outgroup. The YJ1-2 was most closely related to P. myriotylum isolate PM30 (NCBI Acc. No. MT823167). To substantiate the pathogenicity of YJ1-2, the crown roots of peanut plants grown in pots for 4 weeks were wounded using a sterile tweezer, and the mycelial plugs of YJ1-2 cultured for 5 days on V8A were inoculated on the wounds. The inoculated plants were cultivated in a growth chamber at 30℃ and 70% relative humidity with a 12-h photoperiod. The infected peanut plants exhibited wilt symptoms 11 days after inoculation, consistent with the initial observation, while uninoculated plants remained healthy. To satisfy Koch's postulates, white mycelia were re-isolated from the stems of inoculated plants and axenically cultured in V8A. The morphologies and ITS sequences of the re-isolates were consistent with those of YJ1-2. P. myriotylum has been reported as a causal pathogen of peanut pod rot in the United States and China. However, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of wilt disease in peanut plants caused by P. myriotylum in Korea. To prevent the incidence of wilt disease, we will continue our investigations to develop control strategies, including the selection of appropriate agrochemicals.

Abstract
Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.), an oilseed crop, is gaining worldwide recognition for its healthy functional ingredients as consumption increases. The content of lignans, known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, is a key agronomic trait that determines the industrialization of sesame. However, the study of the genetics and physiology of lignans in sesame is challenging, as they are influenced by multiple genes and environmental factors, therefore, the understanding of gene function and synthetic pathways related to lignan in sesame is still limited. To address these knowledge gaps, we conducted genetic analyses using F7 recombinant inbred line (RIL) populations derived from Goenbaek and Gomazou as low and high lignin content variants, respectively. Using the QTL-seq approach, we identified three loci, qLignan1-1, qLignan6-1, and qLignan11-1, that control lignan content, specifically sesamin and sesamolin. The allelic effect between loci was evaluated using the RIL population. qLignan6-1 had an additive effect that increased lignan content when combined with the other two loci, suggesting that it could be an important factor in gene pyramiding for the development of high-lignan varieties. This study not only highlights the value of sesame lignan, but also provides valuable insights for the development of high-lignan varieties through the use of DNA markers in breeding strategies. Overall, this research contributes to our understanding of the importance of sesame oil and facilitates progress in sesame breeding for improved lignan content.

Abstract
Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is a globally cultivated crop of significant economic and nutritional importance. The role of gibberellic-acid-stimulated Arabidopsis (GASA) family genes is well established in plant growth, development, and biotic and abiotic stress responses. However, there is a gap in understanding the function of GASA proteins in cultivated peanuts, particularly in response to abiotic stresses such as drought and salinity. Thus, we conducted comprehensive in silico analyses to identify and verify the existence of 40 GASA genes (termed AhGASA) in cultivated peanuts. Subsequently, we conducted biological experiments and performed expression analyses of selected AhGASA genes to elucidate their potential regulatory roles in response to drought and salinity. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that AhGASA genes could be categorized into four distinct subfamilies. Under normal growth conditions, selected AhGASA genes exhibited varying expressions in young peanut seedling leaves, stems, and roots tissues. Notably, our findings indicate that certain AhGASA genes were downregulated under drought stress but upregulated under salt stress. These results suggest that specific AhGASA genes are involved in the regulation of salt or drought stress. Further functional characterization of the upregulated genes under both drought and salt stress will be essential to confirm their regulatory roles in this context. Overall, our findings provide compelling evidence of the involvement of AhGASA genes in the mechanisms of stress tolerance in cultivated peanuts. This study enhances our understanding of the functions of AhGASA genes in response to abiotic stress and lays the groundwork for future investigations into the molecular characterization of AhGASA genes.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease, a major cause of dementia, is characterized by impaired cholinergic function, increased oxidative stress, and amyloid cascade induction. Sesame lignans have attracted considerable attention owing to their beneficial effects on brain health. This study investigated the neuroprotective potential of lignan-rich sesame cultivars. Among the 10 sesame varieties studied, Milyang 74 (M74) extracts exhibited the highest total lignan content (17.71 mg/g) and in vitro acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity (66.17%, 0.4 mg/mL). M74 extracts were the most effective in improving cell viability and inhibiting reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) generation in amyloid-β25-35 fragment-treated SH-SY5Y cells. Thus, M74 was used to evaluate the nootropic effects of sesame extracts and oil on scopolamine (2 mg/kg)-induced memory impairment in mice compared to the control cultivar (Goenback). Pretreatment with the M74 extract (250 and 500 mg/kg) and oil (1 and 2 mL/kg) effectively improved memory disorder in mice (demonstrated by the passive avoidance test), inhibited AChE, and enhanced acetylcholine (Ach) levels. Moreover, immunohistochemistry and Western blot results showed that the M74 extract and oil reversed the scopolamine-induced increase in APP, BACE-1, and presenilin expression levels in the amyloid cascade and decreased BDNF and NGF expression levels in neuronal regeneration.

Abstract
This paper presents a technique for rapid site-selective control of the quantum state of particles in a large array using the combination of a fast deflector (e.g., an acousto-optic deflector) and a relatively slow spatial light modulator (SLM). The use of SLMs for site-selective quantum state manipulation has been limited due to slow transition times that prevent rapid, consecutive quantum gates. By partitioning the SLM into multiple segments and using a fast deflector to transition between them, it is possible to substantially reduce the average time increment between scanner transitions by increasing the number of gates that can be performed for a single SLM full-frame setting. We analyzed the performance of this device in two different configurations: In configuration 1, each SLM segment addresses the full qubit array; in configuration 2, each SLM segment addresses a subarray and an additional fast deflector positions that subarray with respect to the full qubit array. With these hybrid scanners, we calculated qubit addressing rates that are tens to hundreds of times faster than using an SLM alone.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Critical reflection is an effective learning strategy that enhances clinical nurses' reflective practice and professionalism. Therefore, training programs for nurse educators should be implemented so that critical reflection can be applied to nursing education. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a critical reflection competency program for clinical nurse educators on improving critical thinking disposition, nursing reflection competency, and teaching efficacy. METHODS A pilot study was conducted using a pre- and post-test control-group design. Participants were clinical nurse educators recruited using a convenience sampling method. The program was conducted once a week for 90 min, with a total of four sessions. The effectiveness of the developed program was verified by analyzing pre- and post-test results of 26 participants in the intervention group and 27 participants in the control group, respectively. The chi-square test, independent t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, and analysis of covariance with age as a covariate were conducted. RESULTS The critical thinking disposition and teaching efficacy of the intervention group improved after the program, and the differences between the control and intervention groups were statistically significant (F = 14.751, p < 0.001; F = 11.047, p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in the change in nursing reflection competency between the two groups (F = 2.674, p = 0.108). CONCLUSION The critical reflection competency program was effective in improving the critical thinking disposition and teaching efficacy of nurse educators. Therefore, it is necessary to implement the developed program for nurse educators to effectively utilize critical reflection in nursing education.

Abstract
Ecosystem structure and function are increasingly threatened by changing climate, with profound effects observed globally in recent decades. Based on standardized visual censuses of reef biodiversity, we describe 27 years of community-level change for fishes, mobile macroinvertebrates and macroalgae in the Tasmanian ocean-warming hotspot. Significant ecological change was observed across 94 reef sites (5-10 m depth range) spanning four coastal regions between three periods (1992-95, 2006-07, 2017-19), which occurred against a background of pronounced sea temperature rise (+0.80°C on average). Overall, fish biomass increased, macroinvertebrate species richness and abundance decreased and macroalgal cover decreased, particularly during the most recent decade. While reef communities were relatively stable and warming was slight between the 1990s and mid-2000s (+0.12°C mean temperature rise), increased abundances of warm affinity fishes and invertebrates accompanied warming during the most recent decade (+0.68°C rise). However, significant rises in the community temperature index (CTI) were only found for fishes, invertebrates and macroalgae in some regions. Coastal warming was associated with increased fish biomass of non-targeted species in fished zones but had little effect on reef communities within marine reserves. Higher abundances of larger fishes and lobsters inside reserves appeared to negate impacts of 'thermophilization'.

Abstract
Peptides show biological activity, and are more easily digested than complex proteins. In the present work, we evaluated the effects of soy hydrolysate on skeletal muscle. Soy protein isolate (SPI) was hydrolysed using 2% Alcalase (SPHA) and Flavourzyme (SPHF) at pH 8 for 3 h at 60°C, and at pH 7 for 3 h at 55°C, respectively. Antioxidant properties (total phenolic content and DPPH activity) and inhibition of muscle loss (myogenin, myosin heavy chain [MyHC], creatine kinase, and myostatin) by the SPI hydrolysates in C2C12 cells were compared with those of SPI. Alcalase produced more hydrolysed soy oligopeptides than Flavourzyme. Enzymatic hydrolysis increased the levels of essential amino acids, particularly in SPHF (2,466.85 mg/L) as compared to SPI (56.08 mg/L). The total phenolic contents of hydrolysates increased from 12.02 mg GAE/g in SPI to 22.87 and 18.67 mg GAE/g in SPHA and SPHF, respectively. The IC50 value of DPPH activity decreased four times after hydrolysis (SPI: 124.38, SPHA: 32.18, and SPHF: 30.21 mg/mL). SPHA and SPHF treatments increased the expression levels of both MyHC1 and MyHC3, as well as creatine kinase activity. A significant increase in MyHC3 expression was observed in SPHF at 10 µg/mL. Soy hydrolysates (SPHA: 93.5% and SPHF: 61%) induced a greater decrease in the expression of myostatin, a muscle reduction marker, than SPI (30.4%). In conclusion, soy hydrolysates may inhibit muscle loss, showing particularly better effects when Alcalase is used for hydrolysis.

Abstract
Cultivated peanut (Arachis hypogaea) is one of the important legume oilseed crops. Cultivated peanut has a narrow genetic base. Therefore, it is necessary to widen its genetic base and diversity for additional use. The objective of the present study was to assess the genetic diversity and population structure of 96 peanut genotypes with 9478 high-resolution SNPs identified from a 48 K 'Axiom_Arachis' SNP array. Korean set genotypes were also compared with a mini-core of US genotypes. These sets of genotypes were used for genetic diversity analysis. Model-based structure analysis at K = 2 indicated the presence of two subpopulations in both sets of genotypes. Phylogenetic and PCA analysis clustered these genotypes into two major groups. However, clear genotype distribution was not observed for categories of subspecies, botanical variety, or origin. The analysis also revealed that current Korean genetic resources lacked variability compared to US mini-core genotypes. These results suggest that Korean genetic resources need to be expanded by creating new allele combinations and widening the genetic pool to offer new genetic variations for Korean peanut improvement programs. High-quality SNP data generated in this study could be used for identifying varietal contaminant, QTL, and genes associated with desirable traits by performing mapping, genome-wide association studies.

Abstract
Phytophthora blight (PB) caused by Phytophthora nicotianae is a highly destructive disease in sesame (Sesamum indicum L.). In this study, we used linkage mapping and genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) and candidate genes associated with PB resistance. The QTL mapping in 90 RILs of the Goenbaek × Osan cross using genotyping-by-sequencing detected significant QTLs for PB resistance on chromosome 10, explaining 12.79%-13.34% of phenotypic variation. Association of this locus to PB resistance was also revealed through bulked segregant analysis in second RIL population (Goenbaek × Milsung cross) comprising 188 RILs. The GWAS of 87 sesame accessions evaluated against three P. nicotianae isolates identified 29 SNPs on chromosome 10 significantly associated with PB resistance. These SNPs were located within a 0.79 Mb region, which co-located with the QTL intervals identified in RIL populations, and hence scanned for identifying candidate genes. This region contained several defense-related candidate R genes, five of which were selected for quantitative expression analysis. One of these genes, SIN_1019016 was found to show significantly higher expression in the resistant parent compared to that in the susceptible parents and selected RILs. Paired-end sequencing of the gene SIN_1019016 in parental cultivars revealed two synonymous SNPs between Goenbaek and Osan in exon 2 of coding DNA sequence. These results suggested SIN_1019016 as one of the candidate gene conferring PB resistance in sesame. The findings from this study will be useful in the marker-assisted selection as well as the functional analysis of PB resistance candidate gene(s) in sesame.

Abstract
The aim of the present research was to investigate the antioxidant properties and anthocyanin profiles in the black seed coated adzuki bean (Vigna angularis, Geomguseul cultivar). The acidic 60% methanol extract (40 μg/mL) contains the highest total phenolic and flavonoid contents (486 ± 3 mg GAE/100 g; 314 ± 10 mg CE/100 g) with potent antioxidant properties (trolox equivalent 1272 ± 26 and 662 ± 24 mg TE/100 g) against ABTS and DPPH radicals compared to other methanol-water ratios (20, 40, 80, and 100%). Ten anthocyanin components were identified in this extract including delphinidin-3,5-O-digalactoside (1), delphinidin-3,5-O-diglucoside (2), delphinidin-3-O-galactoside (3), delphinidin-3-O-glucoside (4), delphinidin-3-O-rutinoside (5), delphinidin-3-O-(p-coumaroyl)glucoside (6), cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (7), petunidin-3-O-galactoside (8), petunidin-3-O-glucoside (9) and petunidin-3-O-(p-coumaroyl)glucoside (10) via NMR spectroscopy and UPLC-Q-Orbitrap-MS/MS analysis. The key anthocyanins 3 and 4 of delphinidin type were isolated by reversed phase C-18 MPLC. Our results indicate that the anthocyanin profiles as well as the high phenolic and flavonoid contents are important factors determining the antioxidant effects of black adzuki bean.

Abstract
Abstract
Objectives
Sarcopenia, a loss of skeletal muscle mass and functions, becomes prevalent in older populations. Adequate dietary protein intake is one of the most effective ways to improve sarcopenia. The mealworm is an edible insect that comprises high levels of proteins and micro-nutrients. It could be used a potential protein source for enhancing muscle growth. Also, protein hydrolysate is easily digested and absorbed by the human body with greater functional properties. In investigating the prevention of sarcopenia with mealworm larvae, we optimize the hydrolysis condition of mealworm larvae protein isolate (MPI) and the effect of myogenesis and anti-inflammation of mealworm larvae protein hydrolysate (MPH).
Methods
The optimization of MPH by alcalase and flavorzyme was investigated based on the amount of available α-amino acids (L-Leucine) by TNBS assay and the distribution patterns of molecular weight by SDS-PAGE. ABTS radical scavenging capacity, expression of myostatin (MSTN), MSTN promoter activity, and anti-inflammatory induced by palmitate and LPS were examined.
Results
The hydrolysate prepared for 12 hours by adding flavourzyme after hydrolysis of the MPI with alcalase for 12 hrs under 1% substrate and 1% enzyme/substrate at 55˚C, pH 8 showed the highest available α-amino acid (22.09 mg/g) and had the largest amount of low-molecular peptides at 10 kDa or less. Antioxidant capacity was also the highest (97.8%) among the hydrolysates prepared under different conditions. In the MSTN level which negatively regulate muscle growth, MPH (0.28 MSTN/GAPDH) was lower than MPI (0.38 MSTN/GAPDH). Also, in the MSTN promoter activity, MPI (16.94 Luc/β-gal) was higher than the control while MPH (9.99 Luc/β-gal) was lower activity than the control (12.47 Luc/β-gal). MPI and MPH induced lower expression levels of IL-6, TNF-a, and IL-1b cytokines.
Conclusions
MPH had better capacity in myogenesis compared to MPI, particularly hydrolyzed by flavourzyme after hydrolysis of the MPI with alcalase. Also, the MPH decreased proinflammatory cytokines which increase proteolysis and muscle atrophy. These results demonstrate that MPH could be used as a source for preventing sarcopenia.

Abstract
This study investigated the combined effects of cooking temperature and time on the meat and eating quality characteristics of the sous-vide chicken breast. For the control group, chicken breast samples were cooked in a convection oven until the internal temperature reached 71°C. Each sample for sous-vide cooking was vacuum packaged and then cooked under continuous thermocontrolled conditions in a water bath at 6 combinations of cooking temperature (60 and 70°C) and time (1, 2, and 3 h). Sous-vide cooked chicken meat at 60°C for 1 h (SV60-1h) showed lower cooking loss (6.58 vs. 26.5%, P < 0.05), Warner-Bratzler shear force (21.7 vs. 29.1 N, P < 0.05), and hardness (9.40 vs. 17.3 N, P < 0.05) than meat cooked by conventional oven. Similar to the objective tenderness parameters, cooked chicken meat from the SV60 treatments for all cooking times showed higher scores in all the tenderness attributes than the control group (P < 0.05). However, a higher flavor intensity was observed in the SV70-3h and control groups than in the SV60 treatments (P < 0.05). Owing to a lesser developed flavor in chicken meat from the SV60-1h treatment, the SV60-2h and 3h treatments were assigned a higher acceptability rating for overall impression (P < 0.05). Therefore, cooking temperature and time of sous-vide significantly influenced the physicochemical and palatability characteristics of chicken breast. In this study, the optimum conditions for the sous-vide chicken breast are to continuously cook at 60°C for 2 to 3 h to improve sensory quality characteristics without reducing the water-holding capacity.

Abstract
CRISPR-Cas systems have revolutionized genome editing across a broad range of biotechnological endeavors. Many CRISPR-Cas nucleases have been identified and engineered for improved capabilities. Given the modular structure of such enzymes, we hypothesized that engineering chimeric sequences would generate non-natural variants that span the kinetic parameter landscape, and thus provide for the rapid selection of nucleases fit for a particular editing system. Here, we design a chimeric Cas12a-type library with approximately 560 synthetic chimeras, and select several functional variants. We demonstrate that certain nuclease domains can be recombined across distantly related nuclease templates to produce variants that function in bacteria, yeast, and human cell lines. We further characterize selected chimeric nucleases and find that they have different protospacer adjacent motif (PAM) preferences and the M44 chimera has higher specificity relative to wild-type (WT) sequences. This demonstration opens up the possibility of generating nuclease sequences with implications across biotechnology.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
The effects of anesthetics on cardiac protection and clinical outcomes have shown conflicting results in patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery. Unlike cardiac surgeries in which cardio-protective effects of anesthetic techniques have been reported, it lacks evidence and reproducibility in non-cardiac surgery. A current generation high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTnI) is known to detect perioperative myocardial injury in non-cardiac surgery which is closely related to clinical outcomes. In this study, we hypothesized that balanced anesthesia using both remifentanil and volatile agents is the most effective in reducing postoperative myocardial injury, and compared the incidence of postoperative myocardial injury among different types of general anesthesia.
Methods
We analyzed the data of 3555 patients who underwent general anesthesia for non-cardiac surgery in our hospital between February 2010 and December 2016. In all patients, hs-cTnI was detected in preoperative period and postoperative period within 48 hours. Major exclusion criteria was troponin elevation before surgery. Patients were stratified into three groups; 661 patients who were received propofol-remifentanil total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA group), 1279 patients who were received volatile anesthesia without remifentanil (Volatile group) and 1622 patients who were received volatile anesthesia with remifentanil (Balanced group). The Primary outcome was troponin elevation [hs-cTnI≥0.04 ng/mL] within post-operative within 48 hours, and the incidence of postoperative complications such as postoperative acute kidney injury, new-onset atrial fibrillation and in-hospital mortality were also compared.
Results
The occurrence of myocaridial injury were significant difference between three groups. The occurrence of myocardial injury was significantly lower in the Balanced group than in Volatile group after adjustment (Odds ratio (OR) = 0.727; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.59–0.89; P-value = 0.002). Balanced group and TIVA group showed comparable results in risk of postoperative troponin elevation after adjustment (OR 1.131; 95% CI 0.96–1.33; P-value = 0.133). The incidence of troponin elevation was significantly higher in Volatile group than TIVA group after adjustment (OR 1.6; 95% CI 0.52–0.96; P-value = 0.005). The incidence of AKI was significantly lower in Balanced group than Volatile group after adjustment (OR 0.637; 95% CI 0.49–0.81; P-value <0.001).
Conclusion
The remifentanil combination during general anesthesia may be associated with myocardial protection effect in patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery. Whether this impact leads to adverse long-term outcome remains unclear, and requires further investigation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The cricothyroid membrane is the most commonly accessed location for invasive surgical airway. Although the laryngeal handshake method is recommended for identifying the cricothyroid membrane, there is no clinical data regarding the utility of the laryngeal handshake method in cricothyroid membrane identification. The objective of this study was to compare the accuracy of cricothyroid membrane identification between the laryngeal handshake method and simple palpation. METHODS After anaesthesia induction, the otorhinolaryngology resident and anaesthesia resident identified and marked the needle insertion point for cricothyroidotomy using simple palpation and the laryngeal handshake method, respectively. The cricothyroid membrane was confirmed with ultrasonography. Identification was determined successful if the marked point was placed within the longitudinal area of the cricothyroid membrane and within 5 mm from midline transversely. The accuracy of cricothyroid membrane identification using the laryngeal handshake method and simple palpation was compared. RESULTS A total of 123 patients were enrolled. The cricothyroid membrane was correctly identified in 87 (70.7%, 95% confidence interval 61.8-78.6%) patients using the laryngeal handshake method compared to 78 (63.4%, 95% confidence interval 54.3-71.9%) patients using simple palpation (P = .188). The time required to identify the cricothyroid membrane was longer when using the laryngeal handshake method (15 [3-48] seconds vs 10.9 [3-55] seconds, P = .003). CONCLUSION The success rate of identifying the cricothyroid membrane was similar among the anesthesiologists who performed the laryngeal handshake method and also among otorhinolaryngologists who used simple palpation.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate and compare the diagnostic performance of quantitative parameters derived from diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) in differentiating benign and malignant bone tumours. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty-five patients (age range, 21-82 years; mean age, 55 years) underwent pretreatment MRI. Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values were calculated by DWI. The DCE-MRI data were analysed for the volume transfer constant (Ktrans), extravascular extracellular volume fraction (Ve), and volume rate constant (Kep), and Ktrans/ADC ratio. Each parameter's performance was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curv (AUC), and their AUCs were compared. ROC curves were analysed and each parameter's optimal cut-off value was determined, from which each parameter was evaluated for sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and positive and negative predictive values. The odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval for detecting malignant bone lesions after adjusting the age factor of each parameter was estimated. RESULTS All parameter values (except Ve) were significantly different between benign and malignant bone tumours (p<0.05). The Ktrans had a significantly greater AUC than Ve (p=0.03). The Ktrans/ADC and Kep had the best sensitivity (0.917) and specificity (0.632), respectively. The Kep and Ktrans/ADC had the best positive (0.811) and negative (0.769) predictive values, respectively. The OR was highest for Ktrans/ADC (17.38; p=0.0013). CONCLUSION The Ktrans, Kep, ADC, and Ktrans/ADC could help to detect malignant lesions from bone tumours and Ktrans/ADC appears to be the superior variable among them.

Abstract
Atom interferometry experiments rely on the ability to obtain a stable signal that corresponds to an atomic phase. For interferometers that use laser beams to manipulate the atoms, noise in the lasers can lead to errors in the atomic measurement. In particular, it is often necessary to actively stabilize the optical phase between two frequency components of the beams. Typically this is achieved using a time-domain measurement of a beat note between the two frequencies. This becomes challenging when the frequency difference is small and the phase measurement must be made quickly. The method presented here instead uses a spatial interference detection to rapidly measure the optical phase for arbitrary frequency differences. A feedback system operating at a bandwidth of about 10 MHz could then correct the phase in about 3 μs. This time is short enough that the phase correction could be applied at the start of a laser pulse without appreciably degrading the fidelity of the atom interferometer operation. The phase stabilization system was demonstrated in a simple atom interferometer measurement of the (87)Rb recoil frequency.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of our study was to investigate the associations between serum vitamin D3 levels and orthostatic hypotension (OH) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty-five patients with PD were enrolled in this study. Blood pressure (BP) measurements were gathered while the patients were in the supine position and while standing up. Then, the patients were divided into two groups: PD patients with and without OH. We compared the levels of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 and 1, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (calcitriol) between the two groups. RESULTS Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and calcitriol levels were significantly decreased in patients with OH compared with those without OH. The systolic and diastolic BPs and symptom severities significantly negatively correlated with the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and calcitriol levels. CONCLUSIONS Although the underlying mechanism for this association is not fully understood, our results suggest that low vitamin D status is associated with OH in patients with PD.

Abstract
[Purpose] The lunge Motion that occurs frequently in fencing training and matches results
in imbalance of the upper and lower limbs muscles. This research focuses on the
improvement of the imbalance that occurs in the national team fencers of the Republic of
Korea through specific muscle imbalance improvement training. [Subjects] The subjects of
this research were limited to right-handed male fencers. Nine male, right-handed national
fencing athletes were selected for this study (4 epee, 5 sabre; age 28.2 ± 2.2 years;
height 182.3 ± 4.0 cm; weight 76.5 ± 8.2 kg; experience 12.4 ± 3.0 years). [Methods] The
specific muscle imbalance improvement training program was performed for 12 weeks and
Pre-Post tests were to evaluate its effect on the experimental group. Measurements
comprised anthropometry, test of balance, and movement analysis. [Results] After the
training program, mediolateral sway of the nondominant lower limb and the balance scale
showed statistically significant improvement. [Conclusion] The specific muscle imbalance
improvement training program used in this research was proven to be effective for
improving the muscle imbalance of elite fencers.

Abstract
Overweight and obesity is becoming widespread enough to generate an acceptable and misleading social status. By 2030, in the USA up to 86 % of adults will be overweight or obese. Some selected statistical data based on the body mass index (BMI) indicated that overweight was not associated with increased mortality, this provoked a conceivable interest. Added to this is the observation that while the prevalence of obesity is dramatically increasing, the cardiovascular mortality and life expectancy in the European Union and USA has improved. When more sensitive indicators of body adiposity and its distribution than the BMI, like the waist-thigh ratio in both sexes and the waist-hip ratio in women are projected on mortality, it becomes obvious that even overweight is associated with an increased health risk. Gaining excessive body fat is a continuous, frequently progressive process. Present obesity epidemic in childhood will manifest with deleterious consequences only in future years when adolescents reach adulthood. Prevention is thus essential even before the overweight sets in. Improved life expectancy observed in large populations despite obesity epidemic, is a favourable medical success in the management of hypertension, of serum lipid disorders and diabetes. While encouraging, when it is observed in large population, it does not take away the potential health risk of a metabolic disorder in an individual who is overweight (Fig. 7, Ref. 25).

Abstract
Background: CD151 is a member of the tetraspanin family, which interacts with laminin-binding integrins and other tetraspanins. This protein is implicated in motility, invasion, and metastasis of cancer cells, but the prevalence of CD151 expression in subtypes of breast cancers and its influence on clinical outcome remains to be evaluated. Methods and results: The immunohistochemistry-based tissue microarray analysis showed that 127 (14.3%) cases overexpressed CD151 among 886 breast cancer patients. CD151 overexpression was found to be significantly associated with larger tumour size, higher nodal stage, advanced stage, absence of oestrogen receptor and progesterone receptor, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 overexpression. CD151 overexpression resulted in poorer overall survival (OS) (P<0.001) and disease-free survival (P=0.02), and stage II and III patients with CD151 overexpression demonstrated substantially poorer OS (P=0.0474 and 0.0169). In the five subtypes analyses, CD151 overexpression retained its adverse impact on OS in the Luminal A (P=0.0105) and quintuple-negative breast cancer (QNBC) subtypes, one subgroup of triple-negative breast cancer (P=0.0170). Multivariate analysis that included stage, subtype, and adjuvant chemotherapy showed that CD151 overexpression was independently associated with poor OS in invasive breast cancer. Conclusion: CD151 overexpression may be a potential molecular therapeutic target for breast cancer, especially in QNBC subtype and more advanced stages of breast cancer.
