Zero sound mode in normal liquid 3He

Inelastic x-ray scattering has been utilized to study the elementary excitations of normal liquid 3He at the temperature T=1.10+/-0.05 K and saturated vapor pressure in the wave vector range 0.15<or=Q<or=3.15 A(-10. The present data provide direct information on the zero-sound mode in the mesoscopic wave vector range where it was expected to decay into particle-hole excitations. The obtained results show no evidence of such a decay: the zero-sound mode remains well defined in the whole explored wave number range, thus witnessing a continuous transition of the atom dynamics from the collective to the single particle regime similarly to what is usually found in simple liquids.

Zeolite collapse and polyamorphism

The phenomenology of zeolite collapse is outlined, drawing on recent synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments and computer simulations of low density cage structures like zeolite A and zeolite Y. Attention is drawn to the importance of polyamorphism in destabilizing this type of microporous crystal and its role in order-disorder as well as amorphous-amorphous transitions, together with associated differences in entropy and density between polyamorphic phases and the precursor zeolite. Magic angle spinning NMR and inelastic x-ray scattering are used to highlight changes in structural order and mechanical rigidity between the starting zeolite and the final high density polyamorph. In conclusion, two-level systems detected with inelastic neutron scattering are described and their involvement in dictating the dynamics of the collapse of zeolitic cage structures.

Longitudinal excitations in Mg–Al–O refractory oxide melts studied by inelastic x-ray scattering

The dynamic structure factor S(Q,omega) of the refractory oxide melts MgAl2O4 and MgAl4O7 is studied by inelastic x-ray scattering with aerodynamic levitation and laser heating. This technique allows the authors to measure simultaneously the elastic response and transport properties of melts under extreme temperatures. Over the wave vector Q range of 1-8 nm-1 the data can be fitted with a generalized hydrodynamic model that incorporates a slow component described by a single relaxation time and an effectively instantaneous fast component. Their study provides estimates of high-frequency sound velocities and viscosities of the Mg-Al-O melts. In contrast to liquid metals, the dispersion of the high-frequency sound mode is found to be linear, and the generalized viscosity to be Q independent. Both experiment and simulation show a weak viscosity maximum around the MgAl4O7 composition.

High-frequency dynamics in metallic glasses

Using inelastic x-ray scattering we studied the collective dynamics of the glassy alloy Ni33Zr67 in the first pseudo-Brillouin-zone, an energy-momentum region still unexplored in metallic glasses. We determine key properties such as the momentum transfer dependence of the sound velocity and of the acoustic damping, discussing the results in the general context of recently proposed pictures for acoustic dynamics in glasses. Specifically, we demonstrate the existence in this strong glass of well defined (in the Ioffe-Regel sense) acoustic-like excitations well above the boson peak energy.

Improving the performance of high-resolution X-ray spectrometers with position-sensitive pixel detectors

A dispersion-compensation method to remove the cube-size effect from the resolution function of diced analyzer crystals using a position-sensitive two-dimensional pixel detector is presented. For demonstration, a resolution of 23 meV was achieved with a spectrometer based on a 1 m Rowland circle and a diced Si(555) analyzer crystal in a near-backscattering geometry, with a Bragg angle of 88.5 degrees . In this geometry the spectrometer equipped with a traditional position-insensitive detector provides a resolution of 190 meV. The dispersion-compensation method thus allows a substantial increase in the resolving power without any loss of signal intensity.

Dynamics of quantum liquids in confinement, theory and experiment

Liquid (4)He immersed in porous media such as aerogel, Vycor, and Geltech silica are excellent examples of bosons in disorder and confinement. Of special interest is the impact of disorder on Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), on the elementary excitations of the superfluid and on their connection to the superfluid properties. Indeed, the modifications induced by disorder can be used to reveal the interdependence of BEC, the excitations and superfluidity. To date, the superfluid properties in porous media are much more completely documented than BEC or the excitations. In this paper, we review measurements of the excitations by neutron scattering, focusing particularly on their temperature dependence and the existence of phonon-roton excitations at higher temperatures. The weight of single excitation response at higher temperatures suggests the existence of localized BEC above the superfluid-normal transition temperature in porous media. We sketch several recent predictions made for BEC, the excitations, and the superfluid properties in disorder. Connections with other "Dirty Bose systems" are made.

Quantum effects in the dynamics of He probed by inelastic x-ray scattering

Quantum effects in the teraherz dynamics of supercritical 4He have been studied as a function of both density rho and temperature T; they have been characterized through their effects on the second and third spectral moments of the dynamic structure factor S(Q, omega), measured by the inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) technique. The IXS spectra were collected in the low-Q region below and around the position of the first diffraction peak Q(m), i.e., in a range relatively unusual in this kind of investigation. The measured spectral moments clearly show a departure from their high-T classical expected values. We observe, moreover, that the amplitude of quantum deviations increases slightly with increasing density. This experimental method allows us to extract, even in a region where the dynamics still maintains a collective character, such typical single particle properties as the mean atomic kinetic energy.
