Abstract
AIM To assess in a cross-sectional clinical study the effect of antibiotics on the diversity, structure and metabolic pathways of bacterial communities in various oral environments in patients with acute primary infections. METHODOLOGY Samples of saliva (SA), supragingival biofilm (SB) and from the pulp cavity (PC) were collected from teeth with acute primary infections and then grouped according to previous use of antibiotics (NoAtb = no antibiotics [n = 6]; Atb = antibiotics [n = 6]). DNA sequencing was conducted using MiSeq (Illumina, San Diego, CA, USA). The V1-V3 hyper-variable region of the 16S rRNA gene was amplified. A custom Mothur pipeline was used for 16S rRNA processing. Subsequent analyses of the sequence dataset were performed in R (using vegan, phyloseq and ggplot2 packages) or QIIME. RESULTS Twelve patients aged from 22 to 56 years were recruited. Participants in the Atb group had taken the beta-lactamics amoxicillin (5/6) or cephalexin (1/6) for 2-3 days. A total of 332 bacterial taxa (OTUs) were identified, belonging to 120 genera, 60 families and nine phyla. Firmicutes (41%) and Bacteroidetes (38%) were the most abundant phyla in all samples. Taxa clustered significantly by oral site (PCoA analysis; P < 0.05, ANOSIM). Use of antibiotics had little effect on this clustering. However, SA, SB and PC had different degrees of richness, diversity and evenness. The greatest diversity was observed in SB samples and the least diversity was observed in PC samples. Metabolic prediction identified 163 pathways and previous use of antibiotics had a major effect on the estimated functional clustering in SA and PC samples. CONCLUSION The ecological niche had a strong influence on the bacterial content of samples from various oral sites. Previous exposure to antibiotics may exert an effect on the phylogenetic composition of SA. Metabolic pathways appear to be modulated by antimicrobial agents in SA and PC samples. The dynamics of host/microbial interactions in the apical region and the functional ecology of the infected pulp cavity should be revisited.

Abstract
AIM To examine the influence of the field of view (FOV) and voxel size on the measurement of the volume of simulated internal root resorption (IRR) lesions through cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODOLOGY Eleven single-rooted teeth with IRR simulated by acid demineralization were studied. CBCT images were acquired using large FOV (voxel sizes of 0.200, 0.250 and 0.300 mm) and limited FOV (voxel sizes of 0.076, 0.100 and 0.200 mm). The IRR volumes were calculated using the Dolphin(®) software. Volumetric measurements were validated using IRR silicone putty casts. The analysis of variance (anova) for randomized block design complemented with the Tukey's test was employed. RESULTS IRR volumes obtained using voxel sizes of 0.200 and 0.250 mm were similar (P > 0.05). However, both these values were significantly different from that obtained using the 0.300-mm voxel (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference between IRR volumes measured through voxel sizes of 0.076 and 0.100 mm (P > 0.05), but both differed significantly from that obtained through the 0.200-mm voxel (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the volumetric measurements of the 0.200-mm voxel images of the restricted and large FOV protocols. The mean volumes of the silicone casts were smaller than those calculated using a 0.200-mm voxel, but were similar to those obtained using voxel sizes of 0.076 and 0.300 mm. CONCLUSIONS Despite the FOV protocol, voxel size can influence measurement of simulated IRR volumes. The importance of standardization of CBCT image acquisition protocols is emphasized, especially during follow-up of an IRR lesion, to prevent misinterpretation of its extent, which can create a bias in clinical decisions.

Abstract
Nanostructured, high quality and large area Al-doped ZnO (ZnO:Al) thin films were obtained by radiofrequency (RF) magnetron sputtering. The sample rotation during deposition has resulted in excellent spatial distribution of thickness and electro-optical properties compared to that obtained under static conditions. ZnO:Al thin films are employed in a large number of devices, including thin film solar cells, where the uniformity of the properties is a key factor for a possible up-scaling of the research results to industrially relevant substrate sizes. A chemical post etching treatment was employed achieving tunable surface nanotextures to generate light scattering at the desired wavelength for improved cell efficiency. Since the film resistivity is only slightly increased by the etching, this post-deposition step allows separating the optimization of electro-optical properties from light scattering behavior. The thin films were characterized by FE-SEM, XRD, UV-VIS spectroscopy, four probe and van der Paw techniques.

Abstract
AIM To report different patterns of root fracture healing in adjacent maxillary central incisors with distinct post-treatment outcomes. SUMMARY To describe the case of a 12-year-old girl who presented with an avulsed coronal fragment of tooth 11 and root fractures in the middle thirds of teeth 11 and 21. Four months after initial treatment, she was referred for specialized endodontic care. Tooth 11 presented no clinical or radiographic signs of pulp breakdown. However a sinus tract was found related to the middle root third of tooth 21, indicating pulp necrosis in the coronal fragment. The coronal fragment was root filled and periapical surgery was performed to remove the apical fragment. Twelve months after the clinical procedures and 16 months after trauma, hard tissue healing was evident in tooth 11 region. Bone healing was also satisfactory in the periapical region of tooth 21. *Even adjacent teeth may display different reaction patterns after trauma. *The prognosis of root fractures is variable and different clinical approach may be required to preserve teeth with fractured roots.
