Experiences with remote communication in adult intensive care units during the COVID-19 pandemic: a systematic review protocol

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this review is to explore the lived experiences of critically ill adults, their families, or health care professionals with remote communication in intensive care units (ICUs) during the COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION

Family visiting restrictions in ICUs during the COVID-19 pandemic imposed significant challenges to communication between critically ill adults, their families, and the health care team. Evidence shows that several communication strategies were developed and implemented in ICUs during the COVID-19 pandemic to promote family engagement; however, the experiences of critically ill adults, their families, and health care professionals with these strategies are scattered across primary qualitative studies.

INCLUSION CRITERIA

This review will consider qualitative studies that include critically ill adults, their families, or health care professionals, focusing on their experiences with remote communication strategies in ICUs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

METHODS

This review will be conducted in accordance with JBI methodology. The search strategy will aim to locate both published and unpublished qualitative studies in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Studies published after January 2020 will be included. Study selection, critical appraisal, and data extraction will be performed independently by 2 reviewers. Data will be presented in narrative format and synthesized using the JBI meta-aggregation process. A ConQual Summary of Findings will be presented.

Effectiveness of school-based sleep promotion programs for adolescents: a systematic review protocol

OBJECTIVE

This systematic review will assess the effectiveness of school-based sleep promotion programs on sleep knowledge, hygiene, quality, behavior, and efficiency in adolescents.

INTRODUCTION

Adolescents need to sleep between 8 and 10 hours per night; however, most sleep fewer hours due to peer and school pressure, stress, and excessive use of electronic devices at night. Sleep deprivation can lead to cardiovascular problems, issues with stress management, and suicidal ideation. Schools are an ideal space to implement intervention programs, providing the opportunity to reach a large number of adolescents. Considering the negative impacts of poor sleep, it is essential to assess the effectiveness of school-based sleep promotion programs on sleep knowledge, hygiene, quality, behavior, and efficiency.

INCLUSION CRITERIA

Studies with adolescents (10-19 years old) exposed to school-based sleep promotion programs will be included. Studies in English, Spanish, and Portuguese will be considered, with no time limits.

METHODS

Nine databases, CINAHL, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, ERIC (all via EBSCOhost), MEDLINE (PubMed), LILACS, SciELO, Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, Web of Science Core Collection, and Scopus, will be searched from inception to identify relevant studies. Two independent reviewers will perform the study selection, critical appraisal using JBI tools, and data extraction. Studies will, where possible, be pooled in meta-analysis. Heterogeneity will be assessed using the standard χ 2 and I2 tests. Statistical analyses will be performed using the random effects model. If fewer than 5 studies are included, the fixed effects model will be used. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach will be used to grade the certainty of evidence and a Summary of Findings will be created.

Oral Hygiene in Patients with Stroke: A Best Practice Implementation Project Protocol

Oral hygiene has been shown to reduce adverse events and promote the quality of life of patients with stroke. However, a stroke can result in the impairment of physical, sensory, and cognitive abilities, and comprise self-care. Although nurses recognize its benefits, there are areas for improvement in the implementation of the best evidence-based recommendations. The aim is to promote compliance with the best evidence-based recommendations on oral hygiene in patients with stroke. This project will follow the JBI Evidence Implementation approach. The JBI Practical Application of Clinical Evidence System (JBI PACES) and the Getting Research into Practice (GRiP) audit and feedback tool will be used. The implementation process will be divided into three phases: (i) establishing a project team and undertaking the baseline audit; (ii) providing feedback to the healthcare team, identifying barriers to the implementation of best practices, and co-designing and implementing strategies using GRIP, and (iii) undertaking a follow-up audit to assess the outcomes and plan for sustainability. So, the successful adoption of the best evidence-based recommendations on oral hygiene in patients with stroke will reduce the adverse events related to poor oral care and may improve patients' quality of care. This implementation project has great transferability potential to other contexts.

eHealth Platforms to Promote Autonomous Life and Active Aging: A Scoping Review

New technologies, namely eHealth platforms, are being used more than ever before. These platforms enable older people to have a more independent lifestyle, enhance their participation, and improve their well-being. Information and communication technologies are expected to be linked to the triad of aging, social inclusion, and active participation, which is in line with the implementation of Smart Healthy and Age-Friendly Environments. This scoping review aimed to map eHealth platforms designed to promote autonomous life and active aging. The Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and the PRISMA-ScR checklist were used. A search was conducted on MEDLINE (via PubMed), CINAHL Complete (via EBSCOhost), Scopus, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (via EBSCOhost), SciELO, DART-Europe, CAPES, and MedNar databases. Fourteen studies were included. This scoping review synthesized information on eHealth platforms designed to promote active living, their domains of intervention, and the outcomes assessed in those studies that have implemented and evaluated these eHealth platforms.

Physical Rehabilitation Programs for Bedridden Patients with Prolonged Immobility: A Scoping Review

Bedridden patients usually stay in bed for long periods, presenting several problems caused by immobility, leading to a long recovery process. Thus, identifying physical rehabilitation programs for bedridden patients with prolonged immobility requires urgent research. Therefore, this scoping review aimed to map existing physical rehabilitation programs for bedridden patients with prolonged immobility, the rehabilitation domains, the devices used, the parameters accessed, and the context in which these programs were performed. This scoping review, guided by the Joanna Briggs Institute’s (JBI) methodology and conducted in different databases (including grey literature), identified 475 articles, of which 27 were included in this review. The observed contexts included research institutes, hospitals, rehabilitation units, nursing homes, long-term units, and palliative care units. Most of the programs were directed to the musculoskeletal domain, predominantly toward the lower limbs. The devices used included lower limb mobilization, electrical stimulation, inclined planes, and cycle ergometers. Most of the evaluated parameters were musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory, or vital signs. The variability of the programs, domains, devices and parameters found in this scoping review revealed no uniformity, a consequence of the personalization and individualization of care, which makes the development of a standard intervention program challenging.

Rehabilitation Programs for Bedridden Patients with Prolonged Immobility: A Scoping Review Protocol

Bedridden patients usually stay in bed for long periods, presenting several motor problems caused by immobility, such as reductions in muscle mass, bone mineral density and physical impairment, resulting in a long recovery process. Thus, identifying physical rehabilitation programs for bedridden patients with prolonged immobility is a matter of urgent research for a solution that will help health professionals and stakeholders to develop more adjusted programs and identify possible gaps. To date, no previous scoping reviews addressing this purpose have been found. This scoping review will be guided by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology, will focus on physical rehabilitation programs for bedridden patients with prolonged immobility and aims to map the programs, the devices used, and the parameters assessed. A relevant set of electronic databases and grey literature will be searched. Data extraction will be conducted using a tool developed by the research team that will address the review objectives and questions. Data synthesis will be presented in tabular form and a narrative summary aligned with the review's objective. This scoping review will contribute to the improvement of clinical practice, identifying key challenges that might justify the need to develop new programs suitable in clinical and organizational contexts.
