Analysis of Relationships between Altitude and Distance from Volcano with Stomach Cancer Incidence Using a Geographic Information System

Gastric cancer (GC) is the fifth most common cancer in the world, with a wide variation in incidence rates across different geographical areas. In Iran GC is the most common cancer in males and it is reported to be the third most prevalent after breast and colorectal in females. A geographical information system (GIS) allows investigation of the geographical distribution of diseases. The purpose of the present study was to explore the relationship between gastric cancer and effective climatic factors using GIS. The dispersion distribution and the relationship between environmental factors effective on cancer were measured using Arc GIS. Of all cases, 672 (73.8%) were in males with a sex ratio of 3 to 1. The highest incidence by cities was seen in Namin with 137.5 per 100,000. The results of this study showed that the distribution of GC around the Sabalan volcanic mountain was significantly higher than other places in the same province. These results can be considered as a window to future comprehensive research on gastric cancer.

An investigation of duration of untreated psychosis and the affecting factors

One of the main goals in treatment planning of psychiatric disorders is early diagnosis of patients in the early psychosis period so that duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) is decreased and the treatment response and outcome is improved. The aim of this study was to investigate the DUP of psychosis and factors affecting it. In this cross-sectional study, 80 patients from the psychiatric clinic of Fatemi hospital in Ardabil and Razi hospital in Tabriz who were in the first episode of psychosis completed a questionnaire. The data were analysed by SPSS statistical software. In this study, the mean DUP measured from the appearance of the first symptoms of psychosis were 261.3 ± 110.8 and 212.5 ± 143.5 days for patients referring to Razi and Fatemi hospital, respectively. About 65% of the patients in Fatemi hospital and 32.5% of them in Razi hospital considered visiting a psychiatrist as hard and very hard. The DUP mean here was found to be higher as compared with that of the developed countries. The following factors were found to be playing a role in making DUP longer: lower education, implausible beliefs and culturally rooted social stigma status of visiting a psychiatrist.

Changing pattern of mortality trends in iran, South, South-west Asia and world, 1970-2010

BACKGROUND

Mortality refers to the death that occurs within a population. It is linked to many factors such as age, sex, race, occupation and social class. The incidence and prevalence of mortality could affect the population's standard of living and health care. The aim of this study was to explore the pattern of mortality trends in Iran, south-south west Asia and the world in 1970-2010.

METHODS

A descriptive study was conducted on the registered data in the Statistical Center of Iran and National Organization of Civil Registration. The data were analyzed using statistical methods and graphs. Finally, the analyzed data were compared with the world and south-south west Asia data.

RESULTS

In Iran, 61.1% of all the registered deaths were in male and 60.4% were in urban areas. Crude death rate, infant mortality rate and under five mortality rate decreased from 13, 164 and 281 per 1000 in 1970-75 to the estimated values of 5, 25 and 35 per 1000 in 2005-2010, respectively.

CONCLUSION

The results showed that similar to other countries, the trends of all mortality indicators in Iran have been changed and decreased, which is related to many factors such as improvement health situation and medical interventions.
