Replacement of Volatile Acetic Acid by Solid SiO2@COOH Silica (Nano)Beads for (Ep)Oxidation Using Mn and Fe Complexes Containing BPMEN Ligand

Mn and Fe BPMEN complexes showed excellent reactivity in catalytic oxidation with an excess of co-reagent (CH3COOH). In the straight line of a cleaner catalytic system, volatile acetic acid was replaced by SiO2 (nano)particles with two different sizes to which pending carboxylic functions were added (SiO2@COOH). The SiO2@COOH beads were obtained by the functionalization of SiO2 with pending nitrile functions (SiO2@CN) followed by CN hydrolysis. All complexes and silica beads were characterized by NMR, infrared, DLS, TEM, X-ray diffraction. The replacement of CH3COOH by SiO2@COOH (100 times less on molar ratio) has been evaluated for (ep)oxidation on several substrates (cyclooctene, cyclohexene, cyclohexanol) and discussed in terms of activity and green metrics.

Triphenylphosphine-Functionalized Core-Cross-Linked Micelles and Nanogels with a Polycationic Outer Shell: Synthesis and Application in Rhodium-Catalyzed Biphasic Hydrogenations

Unimolecular amphiphilic nanoreactors with a poly(4-vinyl-N-methylpyridinium iodide) (P4VPMe⁺ I^- ) polycationic outer shell and two different architectures (core-cross-linked micelles, CCM, and nanogels, NG), with narrow size distributions around 130-150 nm in diameter, were synthesized by RAFT polymerization from an R₀ -4VPMe⁺ I^- ₁₄₀ -b-S₅₀ -SC(S)SPr macroRAFT agent by either chain extension with a long (300 monomer units) hydrophobic polystyrene-based block followed by cross-linking with diethylene glycol dimethacrylate (DEGDMA) for the CCM particles, or by simultaneous chain extension and cross-linking for the NG particles. A core-anchored triphenylphosphine (TPP) ligand functionality was introduced by using 4-diphenylphosphinostyrene (DPPS) as a comonomer (5-20 % mol mol^-1 ) in the chain extension (for CCM) or chain extension/cross-linking (for NG) step. The products were directly obtained as stable colloidal dispersions in water (latexes). After loading with [RhCl(COD)]₂ to yield [RhCl(COD)(TPP@CCM)] or [RhCl(COD)(TPP@NG)], respectively, the polymers were used as polymeric nanoreactors in Rh-catalyzed aqueous biphasic hydrogenation of the model substrates styrene and 1-octene, either neat (for styrene) or in an organic solvent (toluene or 1-nonanol). All hydrogenations were rapid (TOF up to 300 h^-1 ) at 25 °C and 20 bar of H₂ pressure, the biphasic mixture rapidly decanted at the end of the reaction (<2 min), the Rh loss was negligible (<0.1 ppm in the recovered organic phase), and the catalyst phase could be recycled 10 times without significant loss of catalytic activity.

Amphiphilic polymeric nanoreactors containing Rh(i)–NHC complexes for the aqueous biphasic hydrogenation of alkenes

A rhodium(i) complex bearing a monodentate N-heterocyclic carbene ligand has been confined into the core of amphiphilic core-crosslinked micelles (CCMs).

Synthesis of Nixantphos Core-Functionalized Amphiphilic Nanoreactors and Application to Rhodium-Catalyzed Aqueous Biphasic 1-Octene Hydroformylation

A latex of amphiphilic star polymer particles, functionalized in the hydrophobic core with nixantphos and containing P(MAA-co-PEOMA) linear chains in the hydrophilic shell (nixantphos-functionalized core-crosslinked micelles, or nixantphos@CCM), has been prepared in a one-pot three-step convergent synthesis using reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization in water. The synthesis involves polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) in the second step and chain crosslinking with di(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (DEGDMA) in the final step. The core consists of a functionalized polystyrene, obtained by incorporation of a new nixantphos-functionalized styrene monomer (nixantphos-styrene), which is limited to 1 mol%. The nixantphos-styrene monomer was synthesized in one step by nucleophilic substitution of the chloride of 4-chloromethylstyrene by deprotonated nixantphos in DMF at 60 °C, without interference of either phosphine attack or self-induced styrene polymerization. The polymer particles, after loading with the [Rh(acac)(CO)₂] precatalyst to yield Rh-nixantphos@CCM, function as catalytic nanoreactors under aqueous biphasic conditions for the hydroformylation of 1-octene to yield n-nonanal selectively, with no significant amounts of the branched product 2-methyl-octanal.

Fluoroalkyl Pentacarbonylmanganese(I) Complexes as Initiators for the Radical (co)Polymerization of Fluoromonomers

The use of [Mn(RF)(CO)5] (RF = CF3, CHF2, CH2CF3, COCF2CH3) to initiate the radical polymerization of vinylidene fluoride (F2C=CH2, VDF) and the radical alternating copolymerization of vinyl acetate (CH2=CHOOCCH3, VAc) with tert-butyl 2-(trifluoromethyl)acrylate (MAF-TBE) by generating primary RF• radicals is presented. Three different initiating methods with [Mn(CF3)(CO)5] (thermal at ca. 100 °C, visible light and UV irradiations) are described and compared. Fair (60%) to satisfactory (74%) polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) yields were obtained from the visible light and UV activations, respectively. Molar masses of PVDF reaching 53,000 g·mol-1 were produced from the visible light initiation after 4 h. However, the use of [Mn(CHF2)(CO)5] and [Mn(CH2CF3)(CO)5] as radical initiators produced PVDF in a very low yield (0 to 7%) by both thermal and photochemical initiations, while [Mn(COCF2CH3)(CO)5] led to the formation of PVDF in a moderate yield (7% to 23%). Nevertheless, complexes [Mn(CH2CF3)(CO)5] and [Mn(COCHF2)(CO)5] efficiently initiated the alternating VAc/MAF-TBE copolymerization. All synthesized polymers were characterized by 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopy, which proves the formation of the expected PVDF or poly(VAc-alt-MAF-TBE) and showing the chaining defects and the end-groups in the case of PVDF. The kinetics of VDF homopolymerization showed a linear ln[M]0/[M] versus time relationship, but a decrease of molar masses vs. VDF conversion was noted in all cases, which shows the absence of control. These PVDFs were rather thermally stable in air (up to 410 °C), especially for those having the highest molar masses. The melting points ranged from 164 to 175 °C while the degree of crystallinity varied from 44% to 53%.

Organic Solvent-Free Olefins and Alcohols (ep)oxidation Using Recoverable Catalysts Based on [PM12O40]3- (M = Mo or W) Ionically Grafted on Amino Functionalized Silica Nanobeads

Catalyzed organic solvent-free (ep)oxidation were achieved using H3PM12O40 (M = Mo or W) complexes ionically grafted on APTES-functionalized nano-silica beads obtained from straightforward method (APTES = aminopropyltriethoxysilane). Those catalysts have been extensively analyzed through morphological studies (Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), TEM) and several spectroscopic qualitative (IR, multinuclear solid-state NMR) and quantitative (1H and 31P solution NMR) methods. Interesting catalytic results were obtained for the epoxidation of cyclooctene, cyclohexene, limonene and oxidation of cyclohexanol with a lower [POM]/olefin ratio. The catalysts were found to be recyclable and reused during three runs with similar catalytic performances.

Crystal structure of penta-carbon-yl(2,2-di-fluoro-propane-thio-ato-κS)manganese(I)

The synthesis and crystal structure of an unexpected CH₃CF₂C(O)SMn(CO)₅ compound are described.

The title compound, [Mn{SC(O)CF₂CH₃}(CO)₅], has been isolated as a by-product during the reaction of K[Mn(CO)₅] with CH₃CF₂COCl. It is built up from a di­fluoro­methyl­propane­thio­ate bonded to an Mn(CO)₅ moiety through the S atom. The Mn atom has an almost perfect octa­hedral coordination sphere. It is one of the rare examples of compounds containing the (CO)₅MnS—C fragment. In the crystal, the methyl group occupies a pocket surrounded by the O atoms of three carbonyl groups of the Mn(CO)₅ moiety; however, the H⋯O distances are rather long. These inter­actions lead to the formation of layers lying parallel to (101), which enclose R₄⁴(15) and R₄⁴(16) ring motifs. The CF₂ group is disordered over two sets of sites with occupancies of 0.849 (3) and 0.151 (3).

Elaboration of a thermosensitive smart biomaterial: From synthesis to the ex vivo bioadhesion evaluation

Alginate and chitosan are polysaccharides that are widely used in the biomedical field, especially as wound dressings. Controlled bioadhesion is an advanced functionality that offers the potential to reduce injuries due to the stripping-off of the biomaterial. Herein, we report the efficient grafting of poly-N(isopropylacryamide) (PNIPAM), a thermosensitive polymer that exhibits a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) at 32 °C on the alginate/chitosan polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) surface. In vitro studies did not exhibit a cytotoxic effect, and cells adhered preferentially on the LCST on PNIPAM grafted surfaces, as reported in the literature. Ex vivo investigations revealed that the adhesive behavior of the biomaterials was not the same on the liver and pancreas. The effect of the temperature on the bioadhesion to organs was unexpected, as PNIPAM surfaces exhibited higher adhesion at low temperature. The PNIPAM was therefore able to confer PEC matrix thermosensitivity, but due to the application force, interactions between PNIPAM chains and their substrate could influence bioadhesion on tissues.

Bis(formylphenolato)cobalt(II)-Mediated Alternating Radical Copolymerization of tert-Butyl 2-Trifluoromethylacrylate with Vinyl Acetate

The organometallic-mediated radical polymerization (OMRP) of vinyl acetate (VAc) and its OMR copolymerization (OMRcoP) with tert-butyl 2-trifluoromethylacrylate (MAF-TBE) mediated by Co(SAL)₂ (SAL = 2-formylphenolato or deprotonated salicylaldehyde) produced relatively well-defined PVAc and poly(VAc-alt-MAF-TBE) copolymers at moderate temperature (<40 °C) in bulk. The resulting alternating copolymer was characterized by ¹H-, 13C- and 19F-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, and by size exclusion chromatography. The linear first-order kinetic plot, the linear evolutions of the molar mass with total monomer conversion, and the relatively low dispersity (Đ~1.55) of the resulting copolymers suggest that this cobalt complex provides some degree of control over the copolymerization of VAc and MAF-TBE. Compared to the previously investigated cobalt complex OMRP mediators having a fully oxygen-based first coordination sphere, this study emphasizes a few peculiarities of Co(SAL)₂: a lower ability to trap radical chains as compared to Co(acac)₂ and the absence of catalytic chain transfer reactions, which dominates polymerizations carried in the presence of 9-oxyphenalenone cobalt derivative.

Catalyzed Chain Transfer in Vinyl Acetate Polymerization Mediated by 9-Oxyphenalenone Cobalt(II) Complexes

The vinyl acetate (VAc) radical polymerization initiated by V-70 at 30 °C in the presence of [Co^II(OPN)₂] (OPN = deprotonated 9-oxyphenalenone), 1, leads to PVAc of lower molecular weight (MW) than expected for organometallic-mediated radical polymerization (OMRP), whether reversible termination or degenerate transfer conditions are used. This represents the first clear evidence of catalyzed chain transfer (CCT) in VAc polymerization. The bis-pyridine adduct [Co^II(OPN)₂(py)₂], 2, shows a marginally lower polymerization rate and an increased CCT activity relative to 1, whereas the activity decreases with marginal effect on the polymerization rate upon addition of excess py. However, raising the temperature to 80 °C (with AIBN as initiator) led to a low MW polymer even in the presence of a large py excess. The CCT was confirmed by ¹H NMR characterization of the chain ends and by a MALDI-TOF MS analysis of the recovered polymer. The collective trends are consistent with greater CCT activity for the 5-coordinate complex [Co^II(OPN)₂(py)] relative to 1 and 2. The presence of py association/dissociation equilibria relating these three complexes was confirmed by a ¹H NMR investigation.

Coordination Chemistry Inside Polymeric Nanoreactors: Interparticle Metal Exchange and Ionic Compound Vectorization in Phosphine-Functionalized Amphiphilic Polymer Latexes

Stable latexes of hierarchically organized core-cross-linked polymer micelles that are functionalized at the core with triphenylphosphine (TPP@CCM) have been investigated by NMR spectroscopic analysis at both natural (ca. pH 5) and strongly basic (pH 13.6) pH values after core swelling with toluene. The core-shell interface structuring forces part of the hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) chains to reside inside the hydrophobic core at both pH values. Loading the particle cores with [Rh(acac)(CO)2 ] (acac=acetylacetonate) at various Rh/P ratios yielded polymer-supported [Rh(acac)(CO)(TPP)] (TPP=triphenylphosphine). The particle-to-particle rhodium migration is very fast at natural pH, but slows down dramatically at high pH, whereas the size distribution of the nanoreactors remains unchanged. The slow migration at pH 13.6 leads to the generation of polymer-anchored [Rh(OH)(CO)(TPP)2 ], which is also generated immediately upon the addition of NaOH to the particles with a [Rh(acac)(CO)] loading of 50 %. Similarly, treatment of the same particles with NaCl yielded polymer-anchored [RhCl(CO)(TPP)2 ]. Interparticle coupling occurs during these rapid processes. These experiments prove that the major contribution to metal migration is direct core-core contact. The slow migration at the high pH value, however, must result from a pathway that does not involve core-core contact. The facile penetration of the polymer cores by NaOH and NaCl results from the presence of shell-linked poly(ethylene oxide) methyl ether functions both outside and inside the polymer core-shell interface.

Positionable vertical microfluidic cell based on electromigration in a theta pipet

A microscale vertical fluidic cell system has been implemented, based on a simple theta pipet pulled to a sharp point (ca. 10-20 μm diameter for the studies herein) and positioned with a high degree of control on a surface. The dual channel arrangement allows an electric field to be generated between an electrode in each compartment of the pipet that can be used to control the electromigration of charged species between the two compartments, across a thin liquid meniscus in contact with the substrate of interest. By visualizing the interfacial region using laser scanning confocal microscopy, the adsorption of fluorescently-labeled materials on surfaces is monitored quantitatively in real time, exemplified through studies of the adsorption of anionic microparticles (1.1 μm diameter) on positively and negatively charged substrate surfaces of poly-L-lysine (PLL) and poly-L-glutamic acid (PGA), respectively, on glass. These studies highlight significant electrostatic effects on adsorption rates and also that the adsorption of these particles is dominated by the three phase meniscus/solid/air boundary. The technique is easily modified to the case of a submerged substrate, resulting in a much larger deposition area. Finite element method modeling is used to calculate local electric field strengths that are used to understand surface deposition patterns. To demonstrate the applicability of the technique to live biological substrates, the delivery of fluorescent particles directly to the surface of a single root hair cell of Zea mays is demonstrated. The mobile pipet allows deposition to be directed to specific regions of the cell, allowing discrete sites to be labeled with particles. Finally, the technique is used to study the uptake of fluorescent polymer molecules to single root hair cells, with quantitative analysis of the adsorption rates of vinyl-sulfonic acid copolymers, with varying rhodamine B content.

Evanescent wave cavity ring-down spectroscopy (EW-CRDS) as a probe of macromolecule adsorption kinetics at functionalized interfaces

Evanescent wave cavity ring-down spectroscopy (EW-CRDS) has been employed to study the interfacial adsorption kinetics of coumarin-tagged macromolecules onto a range of functionalized planar surfaces. Such studies are valuable in designing polymers for complex systems where the degree of interaction between the polymer and surface needs to be tailored. Three tagged synthetic polymers with different functionalities are examined: poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), poly(3-sulfopropyl methacrylate, potassium salt) (PSPMA), and a mannose-modified glycopolymer. Adsorption transients at the silica/water interface are found to be characteristic for each polymer, and kinetics are deduced from the initial rates. The chemistry of the adsorption interfaces has been varied by, first, manipulation of silica surface chemistry via the bulk pH, followed by surfaces modified by poly(L-glutamic acid) (PGA) and cellulose, giving five chemically different surfaces. Complementary atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging has been used for additional surface characterization of adsorbed layers and functionalized interfaces to allow adsorption rates to be interpreted more fully. Adsorption rates for PSPMA and the glycopolymer are seen to be highly surface sensitive, with significantly higher rates on cellulose-modified surfaces, whereas PAA shows a much smaller rate dependence on the nature of the adsorption surface.

High internal phase emulsion gels (HIPE-gels) from polymer dispersions reinforced with quadruple hydrogen bond functionality

A convenient route to organogels templated by high internal phase emulsions has been developed. Key is the use of a waterborne polymer latex loaded with a multiple hydrogen bond (MHB) functionality that becomes disentangled and transfers across the oil-water interface forming a gel network in the oil phase via hydrogen bond interactions.

Vesicles in ionic liquids

The formation of vesicles from 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) in several room-temperature ionic liquids, namely, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BmimBF(4)), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BmimPF(6)), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (EmimNTf(2)), and N-benzylpyridinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (BnPyNTf(2)), as well as in a water/BmimBF(4) mixture, was investigated. In pure ionic liquids, observations by staining transmission electron microscopy demonstrated clearly the formation of spherical structures with diameters of 200-400 nm. The morphological characteristics of these vesicles in ionic liquids, in particular, the membrane thicknesses, were first investigated by small-angle neutron scattering measurements. The mean bilayer thickness was found to be ∼63 ± 1 Å in a deuterated ionic liquid (BnPyNTf(2)-d). This value was similar to that observed in water. The effect of ILs on the modification of the phase physical properties of multilamellar vesicles (MLVs) was then investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. In pure IL as in water, DPPC exhibited an endothermic pretransition followed by the main transition. These transition temperatures and the associated enthalpies in ILs were higher than those in water because of a reduction of the electrostatic repulsion between zwitterionic head groups. To better understand the effect of ionic liquid on the formation of multilamellar vesicles, mixtures of BmimBF(4) and water, which are miscible in all proportions, were analyzed (BmimBF(4)/water ratio from 0% to 100%). SANS and DSC experiments demonstrated that the bilayer structure and stability were strongly modified by the IL content. Moreover, matching SANS experiments showed that BmimBF(4) molecules prefer to be located inside the DPPC membrane rather than in water.

Ionic liquid/oil microemulsions as chemical nanoreactors

The phase diagram and microstructure of the ternary system ionic, liquid benzylpyridinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide)/nonionic surfactant (octylphenol ethoxylate)/toluene, were studied by using conductivity measurements, dynamic light scattering, pulse field gradient spin-echo NMR, and small-angle neutron scattering. Three microregions were identified by conductivity measurements according to the percolation theory. The sizes of IL-in-oil microemulsions with various IL fractions were then determined by NMR and DLS and were found to be in accordance with the radii of gyration (approximately 2 or 3 nm) determined by SANS. The reverse IL-in-oil microemulsions were used as nanoreactors to perform a Matsuda-Heck reaction between p-methoxyphenyl diazonium salt and 2,3-dihydrofurane in the presence of a palladium catalyst. The reaction yields obtained were greater in microemulsions (67%) than in bulk IL (33%), highlighting a strong effect of confinement. Moreover, a direct correlation between the quantity of IL and the reaction yield was observed.
