Abstract
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) present a formidable challenge in the care of individuals affected by multiple sclerosis (MS). Lower urinary tract dysfunction is a prevalent issue among MS patients, predisposing them to an elevated risk of UTIs. When left untreated, UTIs can further exacerbate the already compromised quality of life in individuals with MS. The diagnosis and management of UTIs in MS patients necessitate a careful clinical evaluation. The objective of this review is to delineate preventive strategies and current and developing therapeutic approaches for preventing and treating UTIs associated with urinary dysfunction, catheterization, and upper urinary tract infections in patients with MS. Effectively addressing UTIs and urinary tract dysfunction in individuals with multiple sclerosis calls for a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach.

Abstract
Platelet factors regulate wound healing and can signal from the blood to the brain1,2. However, whether platelet factors modulate cognition, a highly valued and central manifestation of brain function, is unknown. Here we show that systemic platelet factor 4 (PF4) permeates the brain and enhances cognition. We found that, in mice, peripheral administration of klotho, a longevity and cognition-enhancing protein3-7, increased the levels of multiple platelet factors in plasma, including PF4. A pharmacologic intervention that inhibits platelet activation blocked klotho-mediated cognitive enhancement, indicating that klotho may require platelets to enhance cognition. To directly test the effects of platelet factors on the brain, we treated mice with vehicle or systemic PF4. In young mice, PF4 enhanced synaptic plasticity and cognition. In old mice, PF4 decreased cognitive deficits and restored aging-induced increases of select factors associated with cognitive performance in the hippocampus. The effects of klotho on cognition were still present in mice lacking PF4, suggesting this platelet factor is sufficient to enhance cognition but not necessary for the effects of klotho-and that other unidentified factors probably contribute. Augmenting platelet factors, possible messengers of klotho, may enhance cognition in the young brain and decrease cognitive deficits in the aging brain.

Abstract
Mozzarella di Bufala Campana (MdBC) cheese is a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) product that is important for the economy and cultural heritage of the Campania region. Food fraud can undermine consumers' trust in this dairy product and harm the livelihood of local producers. The current methods for detecting adulteration in MdBC cheese due to the use of buffalo material from foreign countries could exhibit limitations associated with the required use of expensive equipment, time-consuming procedures, and specialized personnel. To address these limits here, we propose a rapid, reliable, and cost-effective genotyping method that can detect foreign buffalo milk in a counterpart from the PDO area and in MdBC cheese, ensuring the quality and authenticity of the latter dairy product. This method is based on dedicated allele-specific and single-tube heminested polymerase chain reaction procedures. By using allele-specific primers that are designed to detect the nucleotide g.472G>C mutation of the CSN1S1Bbt allele, we distinguished an amplicon of 330 bp in the amplification product of DNA when extracted from milk and cheese, which is specific to the material originating from foreign countries. By spiking foreign milk samples with known amounts of the counterpart from the PDO area, the sensitivity of this assay was determined to be 0.01% v/v foreign to PDO milk. Based on a rough estimate of its simplicity, reliability, and cost, this method could be a valuable tool for identifying adulterated buffalo PDO dairy products.

Abstract
Males exhibit shorter life span and more cognitive deficits, in the absence of dementia, in aging human populations. In mammals, the X chromosome is enriched for neural genes and is a major source of biologic sex difference, in part, because males show decreased expression of select X factors (XY). While each sex (XX and XY) harbors one active X due to X chromosome inactivation in females, some genes, such as Kdm6a, transcriptionally escape silencing in females-resulting in lower transcript levels in males. Kdm6a is a known histone demethylase (H3K27me2/3) with multiple functional domains that is linked with synaptic plasticity and cognition. Whether elevating Kdm6a could benefit the aged male brain and whether this requires its demethylase function remains unknown. We used lentiviral-mediated overexpression of the X factor in the hippocampus of aging male mice and tested their cognition and behavior in the Morris water-maze. We found that acutely increasing Kdm6a-in a form without demethylase function-selectively improved learning and memory, in the aging XY brain, without altering total activity or anxiety-like measures. Further understanding the demethylase-independent downstream mechanisms of Kdm6a may lead to novel therapies for treating age-induced cognitive deficits in both sexes.

Abstract
With a levitodynamics experiment in the strong and coherent quantum optomechanical coupling regime, we demonstrate that the oscillator acts as a broadband quantum spectrum analyzer. The asymmetry between positive and negative frequency branches in the displacement spectrum traces out the spectral features of the quantum fluctuations in the cavity field, which are thus explored over a wide spectral range. Moreover, in our two-dimensional mechanical system the quantum backaction, generated by such vacuum fluctuations, is strongly suppressed in a narrow spectral region due to a destructive interference in the overall susceptibility.

Abstract
Motor skill learning relies on the plasticity of the primary motor cortex as task acquisition drives cortical motor network remodeling. Large-scale cortical remodeling of evoked motor outputs occurs during the learning of corticospinal-dependent prehension behavior, but not simple, non-dexterous tasks. Here we determine the response of corticospinal neurons to two distinct motor training paradigms and assess the role of corticospinal neurons in the execution of a task requiring precise modulation of forelimb movement and one that does not. In vivo calcium imaging in mice revealed temporal coding of corticospinal activity coincident with the development of precise prehension movements, but not more simplistic movement patterns. Transection of the corticospinal tract and optogenetic regulation of corticospinal activity show the necessity for patterned corticospinal network activity in the execution of precise movements but not simplistic ones. Our findings reveal a critical role for corticospinal network modulation in the learning and execution of precise motor movements.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women during reproductive age. It is characterized clinically by oligo-ovulation or anovulation, hyper-androgenism, and the presence of polycystic ovaries. Often comorbid with insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and obesity, it also carries significant risk for the development of cardio-vascular and metabolic sequelae, including diabetes and metabolic syndrome. In light of these evidences, the most therapeutic option prescribed to PCOS women with obesity, regardless of the phenotype from the severity of clinical expression, is lifestyle correction by diet and physical activity. PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between PCOS with KD in overweight and/or obese women with PCOS, and evaluate the possible beneficial effects on metabolic and endocrine parameters, compared to a standard, balanced hypocaloric diet such as Mediterranean diet (MD). METHODS Participants were assigned to receive, in a 1:1 ratio, one of the two following dietary sequences: KD or MD. In all subjects anthropometric parameters, body composition and metabolic and endocrine parameters were obtained at baseline and after dietetic treatment. RESULTS Our results showed a significant change in the anthropometric and biochemical parameters in both groups after both diet therapies, with statistically significant differences (p < 0.001). Though, the reductions of all parameters were significantly greater in KD group than in MD group. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that a reduction of dietary intake of carbohydrates by KD may be considered as a valuable non-pharmacological treatment for PCOS.

β-amyloid is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and can be measured in vivo by PET imaging. Whether PiB+ (elevated β-amyloid) individuals exhibit distinct physical activity patterns throughout the day (i.e., activity amount or fragmentation) is unknown. Using data from 125 BLSA participants (56-95 years) with PET imaging and ≥3 days of wrist accelerometry, we examined associations between PiB status and activity patterns daily and during 6-hour time blocks using multivariable linear regression models. Modification by age was also examined. Daily total activity counts and activity fragmentation did not differ by PiB status (p=0.34 and p=0.70, respectively). Yet, per each additional year of age, PiB+ individuals were more active during early morning (p=0.04) and evening (p=0.029) but trended towards less active in mid-morning (p=0.069) than PiB- individuals. Though replication of findings is needed, older PiB+ participants appeared more active in the late evening/early morning, possibly reflecting altered sleep-time, agitation, or restlessness.

Abstract
This study hypothesized that perceived fatigability, fatigue standardized to walking, would better discriminate mortality risk than general fatigue symptoms. We leveraged perceived fatigability, self-reported tiredness, self-reported low energy and mortality data from 1,112 participants aged ≥50 years. Hazard ratios (HRs) of all-cause mortality (198 [17.8%] events) by either z-scored fatigability, tiredness, and energy level were estimated using Cox proportional hazards models. Model discrimination was compared using Harrell’s C-statistics (C). After full covariate adjustment, 1 SD higher perceived fatigability, tiredness and low energy level were associated with higher mortality risk (HR=1.20, 95% confidence interval [CI]:1.05-1.37; HR=1.28, 95% CI:1.11-1.48; HR=1.26, 95% CI:1.10-1.45, respectively). The model for perceived fatigability (C=0.8039) had comparable discrimination to tiredness (C=0.8085,p=0.26) and low energy level (C=0.8067,p=0.41). While perceived fatigability was associated with higher mortality risk, it did not exhibit superior ability to discriminate mortality risk than self-reported fatigue symptoms among persons in mid-to-late life.

Abstract
The Apolipoprotein-ε4 (APOE-ε4) genotype is associated with earlier onset and greater risk of β-amyloid deposition, but whether APOE-ε4 status is associated with physical activity amount or fragmentation remains unclear. In 563 BLSA participants aged 55-97 years with APOE-ε4 and ≥3 days of wrist accelerometry data, multivariable linear regression models were fitted to estimate differences in activity amount (daily or by 6-hour time blocks) or fragmentation by APOE-ε4 status and to test whether age modifies these effects. Overall, daily activity amount and fragmentation did not differ by APOE-ε4 status (p=0.28 and p=0.93, respectively). Yet, age significantly modified the APOE-ε4 effect. Per each additional year of age, APOE-ε4 carriers had less activity during early morning (12:00-6:00AM) than non-carriers (p=0.035). This association was non-significant among the oldest-old (p=0.697 at age 80 years, p=0.347 at age 90 years), suggesting possible decreases in the predictive power of APOE-ε4 with increasing age.

Abstract
Cardiac complications in patients with COVID-19 have been described in the literature with an important impact on outcome. The primary objective of our systematic review was to describe the kind of cardiac complications observed in COVID-19 patients and to identify potential predictors of cardiovascular events. The secondary aim was to analyze the effect of cardiac complications on outcome. We performed this systematic review according to PRISMA guidelines using several databases for studies evaluating the type of cardiac complications and risk factors in COVID-19 patients. We also calculated the risk ratio (RR) and 95% CI. A random-effects model was applied to analyze the data. The heterogeneity of the retrieved trials was evaluated through the I2 statistic. Our systematic review included 49 studies. Acute cardiac injury was evaluated in 20 articles. Heart failure and cardiogenic shock were reported in 10 articles. Myocardial infarction was evaluated in seven of the papers retrieved. Takotsubo, myocarditis, and pericardial effusion were reported in six, twelve, and five articles, respectively. Arrhythmic complications were evaluated in thirteen studies. Right ventricular dysfunction was evaluated in six articles. We included 7 studies investigating 2115 patients in the meta-analysis. The RR was 0.20 (95% CI: 0.17 to 0.24; P < 0.00001, I2 = 0.75). Acute cardiac injury represented the prevalent cardiac complications observed in COVID-19 patients (from 20 to 45% of the patients). Patients with acute cardiac injury seemed to be significantly older, with comorbidities, more likely to develop complications, and with higher mortality rates. Acute cardiac injury was found to be an independent risk factor for severe forms of SARS-CoV-2 infection and an independent predictor of mortality. Due to the scarce evidence, it was not possible to draw any conclusion regarding Takotsubo, myocarditis, pleural effusion, and right ventricular dysfunction in COVID-19 patients. Noteworthy, possible arrhythmic alterations (incidence rate of arrhythmia from 3 to 60%) in COVID-19 patients have to be taken into account for the possible complications and the consequent hemodynamic instabilities. Hypertension seemed to represent the most common comorbidities in COVID-19 patients (from 30 to 59.8%). The prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) was high in this group of patients (up to 57%), with coronary artery disease in around 10% of the cases. In the majority of the studies retrieved, patients with CVD had a higher prevalence of severe form, ICU admission, and higher mortality rates.

Abstract
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) lead to a dramatic burden on morbidity and mortality worldwide. Diet is a modifiable risk factor for NCDs, with Mediterranean Diet (MD) being one of the most effective dietary strategies to reduce diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. Nevertheless, MD transferability to non-Mediterranean is challenging and requires a shared path between the scientific community and stakeholders. Therefore, the UNESCO Chair on Health Education and Sustainable Development is fostering a research project-"Planeterranea"-aiming to identify a healthy dietary pattern based on food products available in the different areas of the world with the nutritional properties of MD. This review aimed to collect information about eating habits and native crops in 5 macro-areas (North America, Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Australia). The information was used to develop specific "nutritional pyramids" based on the foods available in the macro-areas presenting the same nutritional properties and health benefits of MD.

Abstract
Abstract
A 62–year–old man repeatedly subjected to PTCA + stent with severe left ventricular dysfunction and estimated FE 15%. After some hospitalizations for heart failure in 2015 he underwent an AICD implant Biventricular. Followed up in our clinics dedicated to heart failure, the patient did not present the characters of the CRT responder presenting a constant high end–systolic volume (224 ml) and none FE improvement of 15%. There was also an asthenia and tendency to inactivity and elevated NT Pro BNP levels despite optimal medical therapy even with entresto 24/26 mg x 2 / day. It has been decided to submit the patient enrolled in the cardiac transplant and / or VAD implantation lists to an implantation procedure of CCM system (cardiac contractility modulation). After two active fixation placement leads on the interventricular septum and connection to the CCM system housed in the subcutaneous pocket right contralateral to the biventricular AICD, the patient was monitored. We have noticed since the first days conditions of hemodynamic stability. Scheduled CCM therapy delivery for 10 hours a day. Following subsequently in the follow up at 3 – 6 – 12 – 18 months the patient showed an improvement of minneshota quality of life questionnaire in heart failure: MLWHFQ (44 at baseline, 17 at two months, 15 to six months, 10 to 12 months and 3 to 18 months), an increase in FE from 15 to 23 up to 26%, a reduction of the NTPROBNP from 13444 to 1178 then climbed back to 5549 and 3712 at 18 months for atrial fibrillation, without any requires re–hospitalization, an increased physical activity of the patient detected by the sensors of the two devices

Abstract
Background:
COVID-19 is characterized by severe inflammation during the acute phase and increased aortic stiffness in the early postacute phase. In other models, aortic stiffness is improved after the reduction of inflammation. We aimed to evaluate the mid- and long-term effects of COVID-19 on vascular and cardiac autonomic function. The primary outcome was aortic pulse wave velocity (aPWV).
Methods:
The cross-sectional Study-1 included 90 individuals with a history of COVID-19 and 180 matched controls. The longitudinal Study-2 included 41 patients with COVID-19 randomly selected from Study-1 who were followed-up for 27 weeks.
Results:
Study-1: Compared with controls, patients with COVID-19 had higher aPWV and brachial PWV 12 to 24 (but not 25–48) weeks after COVID-19 onset, and they had higher carotid Young’s elastic modulus and lower distensibility 12 to 48 weeks after COVID-19 onset. In partial least squares structural equation modeling, the higher the hs-CRP (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein) at hospitalization was, the higher the aPWV 12 to 48 weeks from COVID-19 onset (path coefficient: 0.184;
P
=0.04). Moreover, aPWV (path coefficient: −0.186;
P
=0.003) decreased with time. Study-2: mean blood pressure and carotid intima-media thickness were comparable at the end of follow-up, whereas aPWV (−9%;

=0.01), incremental Young’s elastic modulus (−17%;

=0.03), baroreflex sensitivity (+28%;

Abstract
In the tumor microenvironment, Cancer Associated Fibroblasts (CAFs) become activated by cancer cells and increase their secretory activity to produce soluble factors that contribute to tumor cells proliferation, invasion and dissemination to distant organs. The pro-tumorigenic transcription factor STAT3 and its canonical inducer, the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6, act conjunctly in a positive feedback loop that maintains high levels of IL-6 secretion and STAT3 activation in both tumor and stromal cells. Here, we demonstrate that STAT3 is essential for the pro-tumorigenic functions of murine breast cancer CAFs both in vitro and in vivo, and identify a STAT3 signature significantly enriched for genes encoding for secreted proteins. Among these, ANGPTL4, MMP13 and STC-1 were functionally validated as STAT3-dependent mediators of CAF pro-tumorigenic functions by different approaches. Both in vitro and in vivo CAFs activities were moreover impaired by MMP13 inhibition, supporting the feasibility of a therapeutic approach based on inhibiting STAT3-induced CAF-secreted proteins. The clinical potential of such an approach is supported by the observation that an equivalent CAF-STAT3 signature in humans is expressed at high levels in breast cancer stromal cells and characterizes patients with a shorter disease specific survival, including those with basal-like disease.

Abstract
Background Very Low-Calorie Ketogenic Diet (VLCKD) is currently a promising approach for the treatment of obesity. However, little is known about the side effects since most of the studies reporting them were carried out in normal weight subjects following Ketogenic Diet for other purposes than obesity. Thus, the aims of the study were: (1) to investigate the safety of VLCKD in subjects with obesity; (2) if VLCKD-related side effects could have an impact on its efficacy. Methods In this prospective study we consecutively enrolled 106 subjects with obesity (12 males and 94 females, BMI 34.98 ± 5.43 kg/m2) that underwent to VLCKD. In all subjects we recorded side effects at the end of ketogenic phase and assessed anthropometric parameters at the baseline and at the end of ketogenic phase. In a subgroup of 25 subjects, we also assessed biochemical parameters. Results No serious side effects occurred in our population and those that did occur were clinically mild and did not lead to discontinuation of the dietary protocol as they could be easily managed by healthcare professionals or often resolved spontaneously. Nine (8.5%) subjects stopped VLCKD before the end of the protocol for the following reasons: 2 (1.9%) due to palatability and 7 (6.1%) due to excessive costs. Finally, there were no differences in terms of weight loss percentage (13.5 ± 10.9% vs 18.2 ± 8.9%; p = 0.318) in subjects that developed side effects and subjects that did not developed side effects. Conclusion Our study demonstrated that VLCKD is a promising, safe and effective therapeutic tool for people with obesity. Despite common misgivings, side effects are mild, transient and can be prevented and managed by adhering to the appropriate indications and contraindications for VLCKD, following well-organized and standardized protocols and performing adequate clinical and laboratory monitoring.

Abstract
We investigated the cause of skeletal deformities found in brown trout from the Aspromonte mountain area in Reggio Calabria, Italy. Toxicological, histopathological and parasitological analyses were carried out on 14 fish with evident macro-morphological alterations from 2 different locations in the same river, and 4 control fish without morphological alterations from a different river (far from the first river but still within the area under study). Histopathological and radiological observations confirmed severe skeletal deformities in the specimens investigated. Parasitological examinations highlighted the presence of the nematode Cystidicoloides ephemeridarum, found only within the gastrointestinal tract of specimens showing deformities. Moreover, a direct correlation between parasite number and fish size was found. Given the low heavy metal levels and the presence of a massive parasitosis in teleosts showing deformities, we postulate a correlation between skeletal deformities and nematode infestation: the parasites caused a serious vitamin and mineral deficiency in the fish, which led to a dysplastic vertebral column. The low calcium levels found in malformed specimens compared with negative controls effectively confirm this hypothesis.

Abstract
Background Geriatric conditions (eg, cognitive impairment, frailty) are increasingly recognized for their impact on clinical and quality-of-life outcomes in older patients with cardiovascular disease, but are not systematically assessed in the context of clinical visits owing to time constraints. Objective To examine feasibility of remote monitoring of the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial status of older adults with atrial fibrillation (AF) via a novel smartphone app over 6 months. Methods Forty participants with AF and eligible for anticoagulation therapy (CHA2DS2VASc ≥2) enrolled in an ongoing cohort study participated in a mobile health pilot study. A 6-component geriatric assessment, including validated measures of frailty, cognitive function, social support, depressive symptoms, vision, and hearing, was deployed via a smartphone app and 6-minute walk test was completed using a Fitbit. Adherence to mobile assessments was examined over 6 months. Results Participants were an average of 71 years old (range 65-86 years) and 38% were women. At 1 month, 75% (30/40) of participants completed the app-based geriatric assessment and 63% (25/40) completed the 6-minute walk test. At 6 months, 52% (15/29) completed the geriatric assessment and 28% (8/29) completed the walk test. There were no differences in demographic, clinical, or psychosocial factors between participants who completed the surveys at 6 months and those who did not. Participants, on average, required less than 10 minutes of telephone support over the 6-month period. Conclusion It is feasible, among smartphone users, to use a mobile health app and wearable activity monitor to conduct serial geriatric assessments in older patients with AF for up to 6 months.

Abstract
Myocarditis can lead to autoimmune disease, dilated cardiomyopathy, and heart failure, which is modeled in the mouse by cardiac myosin immunization (experimental autoimmune myocarditis [EAM]). Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) systemic inhibition exerts both preventive and therapeutic effects in EAM, and STAT3 constitutive activation elicits immune-mediated myocarditis dependent on complement C3 and correlating with activation of the STAT3-interleukin 6 (IL-6) axis in the liver. Thus, liver-specific STAT3 inhibition may represent a therapeutic option, allowing to bypass the heart toxicity, predicted by systemic STAT3 inhibition. We therefore decided to explore the effectiveness of silencing liver Stat3 and C3 in preventing EAM onset and/or the recovery of cardiac functions. We first show that complement C3 and C5 genetic depletion significantly prevents the onset of spontaneous myocarditis, supporting the complement cascade as a viable target. In order to interfere with complement production and STAT3 activity specifically in the liver, we took advantage of liver-specific Stat3 or C3 small interfering (si)RNA nanoparticles, demonstrating that both siRNAs can significantly prevent myocarditis onset and improve the recovery of heart functions in EAM. Our data demonstrate that liver-specific Stat3/C3 siRNAs may represent a therapeutic option for autoimmune myocarditis and suggest that complement levels and activation might be predictive of progression to dilated cardiomyopathy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The first-line treatment of axial spondyloarthritis (SpA) is with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and is followed by tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors (the main treatment for patients not responding to NSAIDs) or drugs targetting the IL-23/IL-17 pathway. The efficacy of disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) such as methotrexate and sulfasalazine (SSZ) has not been demonstrated, although SSZ can be considered in patients with concomitant peripheral arthritis. AREAS COVERED This review describes the beneficial and toxicological effects of the drugs used to treat axial SpA. Background and Aims
In the post-hoc analyses of the SUSTAIN and ASSURE trials (Kidney Blood Press Res. 2018;43:449-457), Apabetalone, an epigenetic modulator which lowers serum alkaline phosphatase (AlkPhos), stabilized the GFR in patients with cardiovascular disease and a GFR <60/ml/min/1.73m2. Analyzing the relationship between AlkPhos and renal outcomes in patients with established CKD is useful to preliminarily explore the biological hypothesis that AlkPhos is implicated in CKD progression.
Method
We investigated the relationship between AlkPhos and the risk for a combined renal end-point (30% GFR loss or dialysis/renal transplantation) in a cohort of 609 stage 3-5 CKD patients with an average GFR of 34.8±12.1ml/min/1.73 m2.
Results
Median AlkPhos levels were 91 IU/L (Interquartile range 71-117 IU/L) and in the vast majority of patients had values below 147 IU/L (the upper limit of the normal range). Over a median follow up of 3 years, two-hundred patients had the combined renal end-point. In an unadjusted analysis 1 ln increase in AlkPhos entailed a 49% risk excess for the renal end-point (HR: 1.49, 95% CI 1.11-2.01, P=0.008). Adjusting for traditional (age, gender, smoking, diabetes, total cholesterol, BMI, systolic BP, CV comorbidities) and CKD specific risk factors (hemoglobin, albumin, phosphate, and hs-CRP) did not modify the strength of this association (HR:1.48, 95% CI 1.08-2.02, P=0.016). Furthermore, In a fully adjusted analysis testing the GFR as an effect modifier of the AlkPhos - combined renal end point relationship showed a strong GFR- AlkPhos interaction (Figure). Indeed the risk for the combined renal end-point was gradually more pronounced at progressively more severe degrees of renal dysfunction, the HR being 0.94 (CI95% 0.60-1.47) at a GFR of 40 ml/min/m2 and 2.71 (CI95% 1.49-4.93) at 10 ml/min/1.73m2.
Conclusion
In patients with stage 3-5 CKD alkaline phosphatase within the normal range is associated with the risk for progression to ESRD and the GFR is an effect modifier of this relationship. Findings in this study are compatible with the hypothesis that within the normal range of this biomarker, the risk for CKD progression by alkaline phosphatase is amplified by the severity of CKD. These data are in keeping with post-hoc analyses of the SUSTAIN and ASSURE trials and provide circumstantial support to the hypothesis that interventions lowering serum alkaline phosphatase may mitigate CKD progression.

Background and Aims
Measuring QoL in CKD patients is fundamental to estimate the human cost of chronic diseases and to assess the effect of treatments. Non-medical factors play an important role in CKD progression and QoL. However, there is very limited information on the evolution of QoL over time in CKD patients and it remains unclear whether traditional and CKD specific risk factors are implicated QoL in CKD patients over CKD progression.
Method
We studied a cohort of 582 stage 2-5 CKD patients (age: 61±12 years; M: 60%, diabetics: 33%) and measured QoL by the short form of the Rand corporation questionnaire (SF36), an instrument which measures eight domains of QoL (physical functioning, role physical health, energy fatigue, pain, role emotional problem, emotional well-being, social function, and general health] and two summary scores, (the physical component score and the mental component score) which are calculated by a well validated algorithm (Taft C et al, 2001, Quality of life research). In all patients the SF36 was administered at enrolment and after one (489 patients), two (n=434) and three (n=287) years. The evolution of SF36 dimensions over-time and the predictors of SF36 changes were analyzed by the Linear Mixed Model (LMM).
Results
At baseline the median value of the Physical Component Score (PCS) was 43.7 (Interquartile range: 34.0-50.3) and the Mental Component Score (MCS) was 46.3 (37-52.9) and on average did not change over the 3 years follow up [median PCS at the 3rd year: . 46.3 (35.7-52.0), median MCS at the 3rd year 43 (33.6-50.6)]. On average the GFR at baseline was 36±13 ml/min/1.73 m2 and declined to 34±17 ml/min/1.73m2 at the 3rd year. On detailed longitudinal analysis by the LMM the PCS associated with the evolution of the GFR over time (beta=0.10; 95% CI from 0.06 to 0.13; P<0.001). Adjustment for time (0,1,2,3 years), age and gender did not materially modify such an association (beta=0.09; 95%CI from 0.06 to 0.13, p<0.001) while further adjustment for traditional (Systolic BP, diabetes, smoking, cholesterol), BMI, CV comorbidities and CKD specific (hemoglobin, albumin, calcium, phosphate) risk factors attenuated but did not cancel out the PCS-GFR link (beta=0.05, 95%CI 0.006 to 0.093, P=0.03). This finding suggests that the PCS-GFR link is either largely confounded or mediated by these risk factors but that the same risk factors do not explain in full the same link . The MCS – GFR association was weaker (beta=0.05, 95%CI from 0.008 to 0.09; P=0.02) than the PCS-GFR relationship, became non significant after simple adjustment for time, age and gender (beta=0.04 ; 95%CI -0.003 to 0.08; P=0.07) and was nullified after full adjustment (beta=-0.01; 95%CI -0.07 to 0.04; P=0.59) for the same risk factors.
Conclusion
The PCS and the MCS remain stable over the course of CKD but appear associated with the evolution of the GFR over time. Traditional and CKD specific risk factors substantially confound and/ or mediate these associations.

Abstract
Low-dimensional dynamics of large networks is the focus of many theoretical works, but controlled laboratory experiments are comparatively very few. Here, we discuss experimental observations on a mean-field coupled network of hundreds of semiconductor lasers, which collectively display effectively low-dimensional mixed mode oscillations and chaotic spiking typical of slow-fast systems. We demonstrate that such a reduced dimensionality originates from the slow-fast nature of the system and of the existence of a critical manifold of the network where most of the dynamics takes place. Experimental measurement of the bifurcation parameter for different network sizes corroborates the theory.

Abstract
IntroductionClinical evidences suggests that cerebral inflammatory processes are involved in the development of major affective disorders [1].Obvious correlations exist between changes of inflammatory markers such as acute-phase protein C (PCR) and VES, in patients with bipolar spectrum diagnosis [2].ObjectivesOur aim is demonstrating the correlations between changes of PCR and VES and pharmacological treatment with atypical antipsychotics in patients with acute bipolar disorder, highlighting a trend.MethodTwenty patients with bipolar disorder were assessed at the entrance (T0), after three weeks (T1) and after six weeks (T2) of hospitalization using specific rating scales and blood tests routines include PCR and VES.ResultsIs possible to appreciate a correlation between the affective phase of bipolar disorder and inflammatory markers with a proportional trend (Table 1).Discussion and conclusionThe scores obtained seem to confirm the effect of antipsychotic in both sense of psychiatric symptomatology reduction and in anti-inflammatory action.A confirmation of a correlation between the resolution of affective disorders and normalization of inflammatory markers confirm the intrinsic anti-inflammatory activity of such drug compounds [3].Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract
Hemorrhoidal disease (HD) is the most common proctological disease in the Western countries. However, its real prevalence is underestimated due to the frequent self-medication.The aim of this consensus statement is to provide evidence-based data to allow an individualized and appropriate management and treatment of HD. The strategy used to search for evidence was based on application of electronic sources such as MEDLINE, PubMed, Cochrane Review Library, CINAHL, and EMBASE.These guidelines are inclusive and not prescriptive.The recommendations were defined and graded based on the current levels of evidence and in accordance with the criteria adopted by American College of Chest Physicians. The recommendations were graded A, B, and C.

Abstract
Recent optomechanical experiments have observed nonclassical properties in macroscopic mechanical oscillators. A key indicator of such properties is the asymmetry in the strength of the motional sidebands produced in the probe electromagnetic field, which is originated by the noncommutativity between the oscillator ladder operators. Here we extend the analysis to a squeezed state of an oscillator embedded in an optical cavity, produced by the parametric effect originated by a suitable combination of optical fields. The motional sidebands assume a peculiar shape, related to the modified system dynamics, with asymmetric features revealing and quantifying the quantum component of the squeezed oscillator motion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We aimed to evaluate the baseline characteristics, the reasons for prescription, and the effectiveness/safety profile of real-life apremilast for the treatment of psoriatic arthritis (PsA). METHODS PsA patients treated with apremilast were retrospectively extracted from an Italian multicentric cohort. Baseline population characteristics and reasons for apremilast prescription were analysed. Clinical response was defined as the proportion of patients achieving Disease Activity in PSoriatic Arthritis (DAPSA) remission/low disease activity (LDA), minimal disease activity (MDA), and very low disease activity (VLDA). Six-month retention rate was computed by the Kaplan-Meier method, with a detailed analysis of reasons for discontinuation. Univariate and multivariate models were developed to examine predictors of clinical response and persistence. RESULTS The study population included 131 patients mainly with oligoarticular PsA (58%), carrying at least one comorbidity (64.1%, in particular history of malignancies [25.9%] and latent tuberculosis [16.3%]) treated with apremilast as first-line targeted therapy (47.7%) or in biologics failures (52.3%). Contraindication to biologics (60.3%) and lack of poor prognostic factors (27.5%) were the most frequent reason for apremilast prescription. The 6-month retention rate was 72.1%. Inefficacy (n=7), diarrhoea (n=10), nausea (n=3), and headache (n=7) were the most frequent reasons for discontinuation. At 3 months DAPSA LDA/remission, MDA, and VLDA were observed in 40.3, 6.7, and 5.6% of patients, respectively. Female sex was a negative predictor of both retention rate and clinical response. CONCLUSIONS In our real-life analysis apremilast was mainly used in oligoarticular PsA carrying comorbidities leading to contraindications to biologics. Effectiveness and safety profiles were consistent with clinical trials.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The primary aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of clinical and particularly ultrasonographic signs of enthesitis in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA), fibromyalgia (FM), or both. The secondary aim was to assess the impact of FM on disease activity and clinimetric scores. METHODS This single-centre, observational cross-sectional study involved 101 consenting patients: 39 with PsA (CASPAR criteria), 23 with FM (2016 criteria), and 39 with both. Standard PsA and FM clinical, laboratory and clinimetric data were recorded, and entheses were assessed using the Leeds Enthesitis Index (LEI) and the Maastricht Ankylosing Spondylitis Enthesitis Score (MASES). All of the patients underwent B mode (grey scale) and Power Doppler (PD) ultrasonography bilaterally at the insertions of the quadriceps tendons, the proximal and distal patellar tendons, the Achilles tendons, and the plantar fascia insertions of the calcaneus, to evaluate the thickness of entheses, the hypoechogenicity, the presence of bony erosions, the enthesophytes, and the bursitis. The US findings were scored using the Glasgow Ultrasound Enthesitis Scoring System (GUESS). The data were statistically analysed using univariate and multivariate analyses, and receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves, concentrating on the shared clinical features of the two condition. RESULTS The mean age of the patients as a whole was 53.6±9.47 years. Females accounted for 64.1% of the PsA patients (disease duration 9.13 years), 95.6% of the FM patients (disease duration 5.09 years), and 92.3% of the patients with PsA-FM (disease duration 7.9 years). There were no between-group differences in the patients' body mass index (BMI). In accordance with the study inclusion criteria, none of the FM subjects had PsA or reported any personal or family history of psoriasis. The mean Psoriasis Area and Severity Index was 2.3±3.1 in the PsA group, and 1.2±2.45 in the PsA-FM group. Clinical evidence of enthesopathy was found in 43% of the patients with PsA, 51.3% of those with PsA-FM, and 50.8% of those with FM, while US entheseal abnormalities were detected in respectively 77%, 74% and 35%. The median Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index was significantly higher in the patients with PsA-FM than in those with PsA (7.7 [IQR 2.1] vs. 5.0 [IQR 3.8]; p<0.001), as was the median ESR-assessed Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Score (3.69 [IQR 1.00] vs. 2.82 [IQR 1.55; p=0.004), or CRP- assessed (median 3.27 [IQR 1.07] vs. 2.66 [IQR 1.26]; p=0.006). There was a correlation between GUESS scores and disease duration in the patients with PsA (rho=0.37; p=0.019, 95% CI 0.10-0.61) or PsA-FM (rho=0.38; p=0.016, 95% CI 0.10-0.61), but not in the FM group, and GUESS scores correlated with BMI (rho=0.2; p=0.05, 95% CI 0.00-0.37) and dyslipidemia (rho=0.34; p=0.006, 95% CI 0.11-0.58) in all three groups. CONCLUSIONS The use of a clinical examination and clinimetric scores alone may overestimate active enthesitis in FM patients. As US was more frequently positive in patients with PsA and PsA-FM than in those with FM, it may be useful in differentiating pain due to enthesitis from entheseal pain due to FM.

Abstract
Background
In asymptomatic moderate mitral regurgitation (MR), the criteria for risk stratification are still uncertain. Therefore, in these patients, optimal time of surgery remains controversial.
Purpose
Our aim was to compare left atrial (LA) strain to other echocardiographic parameters for the prediction of cardiovascular (CV) events in patients with asymptomatic moderate MR.
Methods
401 patients with primary degenerative asymptomatic moderate MR was enrolled and prospectively followed for the development of CV events (i.e. atrial fibrillation, stroke/transient ischemic attack, acute heart failure, CV death). Patients with history of atrial fibrillation, myocardial infarction, heart failure, cardiac surgery or heart transplantation, severe MR, mitral valve surgery during follow-up were excluded.
Results
During a mean follow up of 3.4 ± 2 years, of the 326 patients eligible (mean age 65 ± 9 years), 122 patients had 149 new events. There were no significative differences in mean age and sex, clinical and therapeutic characteristics between the two groups. The event-group presented reduced global peak atrial longitudinal strain (PALS), LA emptying fraction, LV strain at baseline, and larger LA volume indexed (p <0.0001). Receiver operating characteristics curves proved the greatest predictive performance for global PALS < 35% (AUC 0.88). Bland-Altman analysis demonstrated good intra- and inter-observer agreement and Kaplan Meier analysis showed a graded association between PALS and event-free-survival.
Conclusions
Speckle tracking echocardiography could provide a useful index, global PALS, to estimate LA function in patients with asymptomatic moderate MR in order to optimize surgical timing before the development of irreversible myocardial dysfunction.

Abstract
Background: Geriatric conditions are common among patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and relate to complications of oral anticoagulation (OAC). Objective: To examine the prevalence of geriatric conditions among older patients with AF on OAC and relate type of OAC to geriatric conditions. Methods: Participants had a diagnosis of AF, were aged ≥65 years, CHA2DS2VASC ≥ 2, and had no OAC contraindications. Participants completed a 6-component geriatric assessment that included validated measures of frailty (CHS Frailty Scale), cognitive function (MoCA), social support (MOS), depressive symptoms (PHQ9), vision, and hearing. Type of OAC prescribed was documented in medical records. Results: 86% of participants were prescribed an OAC. These participants were on average aged 75.7 (SD: 7.1) years, 49% were women, two thirds were frail or pre-frail, and 44% received a DOAC. DOAC users were younger, had lower CHA2DS2VASC and HAS-BLED scores, and were less likely to be frail. In Massachusetts, pre-frailty was associated with a significantly lower odds of DOAC vs. VKA use (OR = 0.64, 95%CI 0.45, 0.91). Pre-frailty (OR = 0.33, 95%CI 0.18–0.59) and social isolation (OR = 0.38, 95%CI 0.14–0.99) were associated with lower odds of DOAC receipt in patients aged 75 years or older. Social isolation was associated with higher odds of DOAC use (OR = 2.13, 95%CI 1.05–4.29) in patients aged 65–74 years. Conclusions: Geriatric conditions were common and related to type of OAC prescribed, differentially by age group. Research is needed to evaluate whether a geriatric examination can be used clinically to better inform OAC decision-making in older patients with AF.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Oral anticoagulants are the cornerstone of stroke prevention in high-risk patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Geriatric elements, such as cognitive impairment and frailty, commonly occur in these patients and are often cited as reasons for not prescribing oral anticoagulants. We sought to systematically assess geriatric impairments in patients with AF and determine whether they were associated with oral anticoagulant prescribing. DESIGN Cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from the ongoing Systematic Assessment of Geriatric Elements in Atrial Fibrillation (SAGE-AF) prospective cohort study. SETTING Multicenter study with site locations in Massachusetts and Georgia that recruited participants from cardiology, electrophysiology, and primary care clinics from 2016 to 2018. PARTICIPANTS Participants with AF age 65 years or older, CHA2 DS2 -VASc (congestive heart failure; hypertension; aged ≥75 y [doubled]; diabetes mellitus; prior stroke, transient ischemic attack, or thromboembolism [doubled]; vascular disease; age 65-74; female sex) score of 2 or higher, and no oral anticoagulant contraindications (n = 1244). MEASUREMENTS A six-component geriatric assessment included validated measures of frailty, cognitive function, social support, depressive symptoms, vision, and hearing. Oral anticoagulant use was abstracted from the medical record. RESULTS A total of 1244 participants (mean age = 76 y; 49% female; 85% white) were enrolled; 42% were cognitively impaired, 14% frail, 53% pre-frail, 12% socially isolated, and 29% had depressive symptoms. Oral anticoagulants were prescribed to 86% of the cohort. Oral anticoagulant prescribing did not vary according to any of the geriatric elements (adjusted odds ratios [ORs] for oral anticoagulant prescribing and cognitive impairment: OR = .75; 95% confidence interval [CI] = .51-1.09; frail OR = .69; 95% CI = .35-1.36; social isolation OR = .90; 95% CI = .52-1.54; depression OR = .79; 95% CI = .49-1.27; visual impairment OR = .98; 95% CI = .65-1.48; and hearing impairment OR = 1.05; 95% CI = .71-1.54). CONCLUSION Geriatric impairments, particularly cognitive impairment and frailty, were common in our cohort, but treatment with oral anticoagulants did not differ by impairment status. These geriatric impairments are commonly cited as reasons for not prescribing oral anticoagulants, suggesting that prescribers may either be unaware or deliberately ignoring the presence of these factors in clinical settings. Abstract
Lithium is among the best proven treatments for patients diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, however response to Lithium appears to be considerably variable among individuals and it has been suggested that this inconstancy in Lithium response could be genetically determined. Starting from this perspective, in the last few decades, a number of pharmacogenetic studies have attempted to identify genetic variants, which might be associated with response to Lithium in bipolar patients, in order to develop a pharmacogenetics test to tailor treatment on patients, identifying who will benefit the most from therapy with Lithium. Within this context, authors have critically reviewed pharmacogenetic studies of Lithium response in bipolar disorder, suggesting strategies for future work in this field. Computerized searches of PubMed and Embase databases, for studies published between 1998 and January 2018, was performed: 1162 studies were identified but only 37 relevant papers were selected for detailed review. Despite some interesting preliminary findings, the pharmacogenetics of Lithium and the development of a specific pharmacogenetics test in bipolar disorder appears to be a field still in its infancy, even though the advent of genome-wide association studies holds particular promise for future studies, which should include larger samples.

Abstract
Policy Points Policymakers should invest more on researching the long-term health effects of low-ionizing radiation exposure, as we are far from reaching a consensus on a topic that is of enormous importance for public health and safety. Public policies such as those limiting the import of contaminated food from areas hit by a radioactive disaster or those regulating the resident population's access to such areas should follow a precautionary approach. Neoplasm diagnosis and medical care should be designed in order to take into account the possible role of long-term, low-dose radiation exposure. Health care policies should provide effective screening and prevention strategies with a specific focus on the regions that were hit most severely by the Chernobyl nuclear fallout. Health care expenditure should be targeted, taking into account the geographical dispersion of the fallout in order to attenuate its possible effect on neoplasm incidence. CONTEXT This study investigates the association between the radioactive 137 Cesium fallout originated by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident and dispersed over Western Europe, as a result of a combination of radioactive cloud passage days and rainy days over a 10-day period, and long-term health patterns and related costs. Since the half-life of 137 Cesium is 30.17 years, part of the radioactivity in the affected regions is still present today, and it is usually still detected in the food chain, although at lower concentration levels. METHODS We match longitudinal data on neoplasm incidence over the time span 2000-2013 in a number of European regions not immediately adjacent to Chernobyl with the randomly distributed levels of cesium deposition after the nuclear disaster in order to assess whether we can detect an association with the long-term health effects on the European population through a random effects model. FINDINGS Considering 3 levels of fallout deposition-low, medium, and high-hospital discharges after treatment for neoplasms are, respectively, 0.36, 0.44, and 0.98 discharges over 100 inhabitants higher compared to regions with no fallout, with the population average being around 1.7 hospital discharges by neoplasms over 100 inhabitants. We checked the robustness of our findings to a number of tests including a placebo simulation and different model specifications. CONCLUSIONS Radioactive fallout is positively associated with a higher incidence of hospital discharges after treatment for neoplasms almost 30 years after its release, with larger effects in regions where the radioactivity was more intense. Our estimates are comparable to the findings of the largest-scale study on the long-term health effects of continuous low levels of radiation exposure among workers in the nuclear industry and suggest that more research is needed on this topic, given its enormous importance for public health and safety.

Abstract
Intracellular free calcium concentrations ([Ca++]1) were studied in polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) from 13 athyreotic patients who had been previously treated by total thyroidectomy and radioiodine therapy for differentiated thyroid carcinoma, and from age- and sex-matched euthyroid healthy controls. Patients were studied twice, when hypothyroid (visit 1) and after restoration of euthyroidism by L-T4 TSH-suppressive therapy (visit 2). PMNs from patients at visit 1 had significantly lower resting [Ca++]1 levels compared to both visit 2 and controls. Values at visit 2 did not differ from those of the controls. Stimulus-induced [Ca++]1 rise was also significantly blunted at visit 1 and normalized at visit 2, possibly through a differential contribution of distinct intracellular Ca++ stores, as suggested by the response pattern to the chemotactic agent, N-formyl-Met-Leu-Phe (fMLP), to the selective SERCA pump inhibitor, thapsigargine, and to the mitochondrial uncoupler, carbonyl cyanide p-trifluoromethoxyphenyl-hydrazone (FCCP). In vitro treatment of PMNs from healthy subjects with high TSH concentrations impaired intracellular Ca++ store function. Both resting [Ca++]1 levels and fMLP-induced [Ca++]1 rise increased in the presence either of low-concentration TSH or of T4, but effects of TSH and T4 were not additive. T3, rT3, and TRIAC had no effect. In conclusion, this study provides evidence for a direct relationship between thyroid status and [Ca[Ca++]1 homeostasis in human PMNs, mainly related to direct actions of TSH and T4 on these cells.

Abstract
The extraordinary sensitivity of the output field of an optical cavity to small quantum-scale displacements has led to breakthroughs such as the first detection of gravitational waves and of the motions of quantum ground-state cooled mechanical oscillators. While heterodyne detection of the output optical field of an optomechanical system exhibits asymmetries which provide a key signature that the mechanical oscillator has attained the quantum regime, important quantum correlations are lost. In turn, homodyning can detect quantum squeezing in an optical quadrature but loses the important sideband asymmetries. Here we introduce and experimentally demonstrate a new technique, subjecting the autocorrelators of the output current to filter functions, which restores the lost heterodyne correlations (whether classical or quantum), drastically augmenting the useful information accessible. The filtering even adjusts for moderate errors in the locking phase of the local oscillator. Hence we demonstrate the single-shot measurement of hundreds of different field quadratures allowing the rapid imaging of detailed features from a simple heterodyne trace. We also obtain a spectrum of hybrid homodyne-heterodyne character, with motional sidebands of combined amplitudes comparable to homodyne. Although investigated here in a thermal regime, the method's robustness and generality represents a promising new approach to sensing of quantum-scale displacements.

Abstract
Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β is one of the major inducers of epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT), a crucial program that has a critical role in promoting carcinoma's metastasis formation. MicroRNAs-143 and -145, which are both TGF-β direct transcriptional targets, are essential for the differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) during embryogenesis, a TGF-β-dependent process reminiscent of EMT. Their role in adult tissues is however less well defined and even ambiguous, as their expression was correlated both positively and negatively with tumor progression. Here we show that high expression of both miRs-143 and -145 in mouse mammary tumor cells expressing constitutively active STAT3 (S3C) is involved in mediating their disrupted cell-cell junctions. Additionally, miR-143 appears to have a unique role in tumorigenesis by enhancing cell migration in vitro and extravasation in vivo while impairing anchorage-independent growth, which may explain the contradictory reports about its role in tumors. Accordingly, we demonstrate that overexpression of either miRNA in the non-transformed mammary epithelial NMuMG cells leads to upregulation of EMT markers and of several endogenous TGF-β targets, downmodulation of a number of junction proteins and increased motility, correlating with enhanced basal and TGF-β-induced SMAD-mediated transcription. Moreover, pervasive transcriptome perturbation consistent with the described phenotype was observed. In particular, the expression of several transcription factors involved in the mitogenic responses, of MAPK family members and, importantly, of several tight junction proteins and the SMAD co-repressor TGIF was significantly reduced. Our results provide important mechanistic insight into the non-redundant role of miRs-143 and -145 in EMT-related processes in both transformed and non-transformed cells, and suggest that their expression must be finely coordinated to warrant optimal migration/invasion while not interfering with cell growth.

Abstract
In this work 437 fish samples of species belonging to the families Myctophidae (Electrona risso and Diaphus metopoclampus) and Phosichthyidae (Vinciguerria attenuata) were examined for the presence of Anisakidae larvae. The study was performed with fishes in the central Mediterranean Sea, particularly in the Strait of Sicily and in the Strait of Messina. The visual inspection and chloro-peptic analysis revealed the presence of nematode parasites with prevalence values between 2.9% in Electrona risso samples and 5.4% in Vinciguerria attenuata samples. A positive correlation was found between standard length (SL) and prevalence of infestation in D. metopoclampus samples (p<0.05). The larvae examined were morphologically ascribed, at genus level, to Anisakis morphotypes I and II and molecularly identified as Anisakis pegreffii, Anisakis ziphidarum and Anisakis physeteris, in 67%, 9% and 24% of the fish samples examined. Overall, A. pegreffii and A. ziphidarum larvae were isolated in 14 and 2 specimens of D. metopoclampus respectively, A. physeteris larvae were found in 3 E. risso and 2 V. attenuata. A positive correlation was found between standard length and prevalence of infestation in D. metopoclampus samples (p<0.05). First information is provided on the presence of Anisakis spp. larvae of the myctophid fish species E. risso, D. metopoclampus and V. attenuata from the Central Mediterranean. It is also confirmed the role of lanternfishes (Myctophidae) as paratenic hosts for Anisakis spp.
