Abstract
Human peroxiredoxin 3 (HsPrx3) is a thiol-based peroxidase responsible for the reduction of most hydrogen peroxide and peroxynitrite formed in mitochondria. Mitochondrial disfunction can lead to membrane lipoperoxidation, resulting in the formation of lipid-bound fatty acid hydroperoxides (LFA-OOHs) which can be released to become free fatty acid hydroperoxides (fFA-OOHs). Herein, we report that HsPrx3 is oxidized and hyperoxidized by fFA-OOHs including those derived from arachidonic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid peroxidation at position 15 with remarkably high rate constants of oxidation (>3.5 × 107 M-1s-1) and hyperoxidation (~2 × 107 M-1s-1). The endoperoxide-hydroperoxide PGG2, an intermediate in prostanoid synthesis, oxidized HsPrx3 with a similar rate constant, but was less effective in causing hyperoxidation. Biophysical methodologies suggest that HsPrx3 can bind hydrophobic structures. Indeed, molecular dynamic simulations allowed the identification of a hydrophobic patch near the enzyme active site that can allocate the hydroperoxide group of fFA-OOHs in close proximity to the thiolate in the peroxidatic cysteine. Simulations performed using available and herein reported kinetic data indicate that HsPrx3 should be considered a main target for mitochondrial fFA-OOHs. Finally, kinetic simulation analysis support that mitochondrial fFA-OOHs formation fluxes in the range of nM/s are expected to contribute to HsPrx3 hyperoxidation, a modification that has been detected in vivo under physiological and pathological conditions.

Abstract
Global warming is affecting biodiversity; however, the extent to which animal reproductive processes respond to predicted temperature increments remains largely unexplored. The thermal environment has a pronounced impact on metabolic rates of ectotherms; therefore, an interesting question to assess is whether temperature increase might affect specific reproductive mechanisms like sperm performance in ectotherms. Moreover, in many species, oviductal fluid (OF) is known to regulate and maintain sperm quality; however, the role of OF in relation to the effects of high temperature on sperm remains unclear. Our aim was to experimentally test the effect of increased temperature on sperm velocity, swimming path and percentage of motility in neutral conditions at ejaculation (without OF) and in female's reproductive tract fluid (with OF), in a social ectotherm lizard model, Tropidurus spinulosus, which has specific thermal requirements for reproduction. Our results suggest that a rising temperature associated with global warming (+4°C) affects negatively sperm dynamics and survival. However, OF ameliorated the harmful effects of high temperature. This is an important point, as this study is the first to have tested the role of OF in preserving sperm from a warmer pre-fertilization environment. These results contribute to our understanding of how thermal environment changes might affect post-copulatory reproductive mechanisms. Abstract
Colors are important vehicles for social signals in many taxa. In Squamata, previous studies have linked color characteristics and chromatic diversity to sexual selection and, particularly, species showing male-biased body size dimorphism also showed male-biased dichromatism and color diversity. Sexual dichromatism may occur in body regions used for conspecific communication and it may be expressed at wavelengths, such as ultraviolet, easily perceivable by conspecifics. We tested this prediction in a social lizard model, Tropidurus spinulosus, using spectrophotometry and visual modelling which enable colors to be interpreted as the individuals of the same taxon see them. Our results indicate that sexual dichromatism occurs in the ventral regions and the flanks, which are the body regions involved in sexual displays. Males show greater color diversity, having larger color volumes and more contrasting colors. These findings reinforce the idea that sexual selection towards males is coupled with the evolution of male-biased, diverse, coloration which could act as a signal in social reproductive contexts.

Abstract
Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a high prevalence zoonosis among the rural population of Tacuarembó (Uruguay). The correlation between serological data and the incidence of risk factors was studied in a survey carried out in 1998 among rural communities where 480 individuals were examined by means of abdominal sonography (local prevalence=0·8%). Serum samples (305) were analysed by ELISA to determine specific IgG against crude antigens from Echinococcus granulosus. A total of 27 individuals exhibiting no detectable changes in abdominal sonographic examination were found to be seropositive (‘ultrasound normal group’). Of these individuals 9 were seroreactive against purified antigen B. A significant degree of correlation was found between seroreactivity and the incidence of some risk factors (CE antecedent in the family, P<0·005 and use of rural water, P<0·0001) among this group. Follow-up of individuals of the ‘ultrasound normal group’ was carried out after 2 years to evaluate the implications of this serological reactivity. No predictive value for cyst development was assessed with complementary image study; in contrast transient antibodies were observed with both crude and purified antigen as approximately 60% of individuals became negative when re-sampled.
