Dynamics in the O(2 × 1) adlayer on Ru(0001): bridging timescales from milliseconds to minutes by scanning tunneling microscopy

The dynamics within an O(2 × 1) adlayer on Ru(0001) is studied by density functional theory and high-speed scanning tunneling microscopy. Transition state theory proposes dynamic oxygen species in the reduced O(2 × 1) layer at room temperature. Collective diffusion processes can result in structural reorientations of characteristic stripe patterns. Spiral high-speed scanning tunneling microscopy measurements reveal this reorientation as a function of time in real space. Measurements, ranging over several minutes with constantly high frame rates of 20 Hz resolved the gradual reorientation. Moreover, reversible fast flipping events of stripe patterns are observed. These measurements relate the observations of long-term atomic rearrangements and their underlying fast processes captured within several tens of milliseconds.

A high-speed variable-temperature ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscope with spiral scan capabilities

We present the design and development of a variable-temperature high-speed scanning tunneling microscope (STM). The setup consists of a two-chamber ultra-high vacuum system, including a preparation and a main chamber. The preparation chamber is equipped with standard preparation tools for sample cleaning and film growth. The main chamber hosts the STM that is located within a continuous flow cryostat for counter-cooling during high-temperature measurements. The microscope body is compact, rigid, and highly symmetric to ensure vibrational stability and low thermal drift. We designed a hybrid scanner made of two independent tube piezos for slow and fast scanning, respectively. A commercial STM controller is used for slow scanning, while a high-speed Versa Module Eurocard bus system controls fast scanning. Here, we implement non-conventional spiral geometries for high-speed scanning, which consist of smooth sine and cosine signals created by an arbitrary waveform generator. The tip scans in a quasi-constant height mode, where the logarithm of the tunneling current signal can be regarded as roughly proportional to the surface topography. Scan control and data acquisition have been programmed in the experimental physics and industrial control system framework. With the spiral scans, we atomically resolved diffusion processes of oxygen atoms on the Ru(0001) surface and achieved a time resolution of 8.3 ms per frame at different temperatures. Variable-temperature measurements reveal an influence of the temperature on the oxygen diffusion rate.

Relations between synthesis and microstructural properties of copper/zinc hydroxycarbonates

Cu/Zn Hydroxycarbonates obtained by co-precipitation of Cu(2+) and Zn(2+) with Na(2)CO(3) have been investigated regarding phase formation and thermal decomposition in two series with varying Cu/Zn ratios prepared according to the decreasing pH and constant pH method. Hydrozincite, aurichalcite and (zincian)-malachite were found to form at differing Cu/Zn ratios for both series. For the constant pH preparation the Cu/Zn ratio in zincian-malachite was close to the nominal values whereas excess values were found for the decreasing pH samples. The degree of crystallinity as well as the thermal decomposition temperatures were lower for the constant pH series. All samples containing aurichalcite revealed an unexpected decomposition step at high temperatures evolving exclusively CO(2). The differences in composition and microstucture were traced back to the different pathways of solid formation for the two preparation methods. Substantial changes were observed during the post-precipitation processes of ageing and washing. The effects were studied in detail on samples with a cation ratio of Cu/Zn 70:30 mol %. Ageing of the precipitates in their own solutions is accompanied by a spontaneous crystallization of the initially amorphous solids. The decreasing pH sample develops from a hydroxy-rich material comprising basic copper nitrate (gerhardtite) as an intermediate. Only small changes in the chemistry of the samples were detected for the constant pH precipitation. The findings are summarised into a scheme of solid formation processes that explains the phenomenon of a "chemical memory" of the precipitates when they are converted into Cu/ZnO model catalysts.

Two-Dimensional Imaging of Potential Waves in Electrochemical Systems by Surface Plasmon Microscopy

The potential dependence of resonance conditions for the excitation of surface plasmons was exploited to obtain two-dimensional images of the potential distribution of an electrode with high temporal resolution. This method allows the study of spatiotemporal patterns in electrochemical systems. Potential waves traveling across the electrode with a speed on the order of meters per second were observed in the bistable regime of an oscillatory electrochemical reaction. This velocity is close to that of excitation waves in nerve fibers and is far greater than the velocity of reaction-diffusion waves observed in other chemical systems.
