Recovery of rare earth elements (Nd3+ and Dy3+) by using carbon-based adsorbents from spent tire rubber

Two samples of spent tire rubber (rubber A and rubber B) were submitted to thermochemical conversion by pyrolysis process. A450, B450 and A900, B900 chars were obtained from rubber A and rubber B at 450 °C and 900 °C, respectively. The chars were then applied as recovery agents of Nd3+ and Dy3+ from aqueous solutions in mono and bicomponent solutions, and their performance was benchmarked with a commercial activated carbon. The chars obtained at 900 °C were the most efficient adsorbents for both elements with uptake capacities around 30 mg g-1. The chars obtained at 450 °C presented uptake capacities similar to the commercial carbon (≈ 11 mg g-1). A900 and B900 chars presented a higher availability of Zn ions that favored the ion exchange mechanism. It was found that Nd3+ and Dy3+ were adsorbed as oxides after Zn was released from silicate structures (Zn2SiO4). A900 char was further selected to be tested with Nd/Dy binary mixtures and it was found a trend to adsorb a slightly higher amount of Dy3+ due to its smaller ionic radius. The uptake capacity in bicomponent solutions was generally higher than for single component solutions due to the higher driving force triggered by the higher concentration gradient.

Online Monitoring of Sensor Calibration Status to Support Condition-Based Maintenance

Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM), based on sensors, can only be reliable if the data used to extract information are also reliable. Industrial metrology plays a major role in ensuring the quality of the data collected by the sensors. To guarantee that the values collected by the sensors are reliable, it is necessary to have metrological traceability made by successive calibrations from higher standards to the sensors used in the factories. To ensure the reliability of the data, a calibration strategy must be put in place. Usually, sensors are only calibrated on a periodic basis; so, they often go for calibration without it being necessary or collect data inaccurately. In addition, the sensors are checked often, increasing the need for manpower, and sensor errors are frequently overlooked when the redundant sensor has a drift in the same direction. It is necessary to acquire a calibration strategy based on the sensor condition. Through online monitoring of sensor calibration status (OLM), it is possible to perform calibrations only when it is really necessary. To reach this end, this paper aims to provide a strategy to classify the health status of the production equipment and of the reading equipment that uses the same dataset. A measurement signal from four sensors was simulated, for which Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning with unsupervised algorithms were used. This paper demonstrates how, through the same dataset, it is possible to obtain distinct information. Because of this, we have a very important feature creation process, followed by Principal Component Analysis (PCA), K-means clustering, and classification based on Hidden Markov Models (HMM). Through three hidden states of the HMM, which represent the health states of the production equipment, we will first detect, through correlations, the features of its status. After that, an HMM filter is used to eliminate those errors from the original signal. Next, an equal methodology is conducted for each sensor individually and using statistical features in the time domain where we can obtain, through HMM, the failures of each sensor.

MDMA-Assisted Therapy for Treatment-Resistant Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – One step further toward a patient-centered treatment pathway

Introduction

PTSD is a chronic, debilitating condition with limited treatment efficacy. Accessing traumatic memories often leads to overwhelming distress, impacting treatment process. Current approved pharmacological treatments have exhibited small to moderate effects when compared with placebo. Evidence suggests 3,4,-methylene-dioxymethamphetamine(MDMA)-assisted psychotherapy as a viable option for refractory PTSD.

Objectives

Comprehensive review of early clinical research, proposed mechanisms, safety and emerging therapeutic models.

Methods

Eligible studies will be identified through strategic search of MEDLINE.

Results

Pre-clinical and imaging studies suggest memory reconsolidation and fear extinction as candidate psychological and neurological mechanisms, involving MDMA’s combined effects of increasing serotonergic activity, as well the release of oxytocin and brain-derived neurotrophic factor in key memory and emotional circuits. Resulting reduction in amygdala and insula activation and increasing connectivity between the amygdala and hippocampus may create a “tolerance window” of neuroplasticity for emotional engagement and reprocessing of traumatic memories during psychotherapy. Early clinical trials report impressive and durable reduction in PTSD symptoms, with a safety profile comparable to that of SSRIs. A recently completed randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 3 trial reported full remission of PTSD symptoms in 67% of patients at 2 months, with no increase in suicidality, cardiovascular events or abuse behavior. Emerging treatment models underline the importance of unmedicated therapeutic sessions for preparation for the experience and subsequent integration as essential for full benefit and safety of the clinical context.

Conclusions

The psychological impact associated with the COVID-19 pandemic is an reminder of the emotional and economic burden associated with PTSD. MDMA-assisted therapy may be a breakthrough approach meriting further multidisciplinary investment and clinical research.

Cr(III) removal from synthetic and industrial wastewaters by using co-gasification chars of rice waste streams

Blends of rice waste streams were submitted to co-gasification assays. The resulting chars (G1C and G2C) were characterized and used in Cr(III) removal assays from a synthetic solution. A Commercial Activated Carbon (CAC) was used for comparison purposes. The chars were non-porous materials mainly composed by ashes (68.3-92.6% w/w). The influences of adsorbent loading (solid/liquid ratio - S/L) and initial pH in Cr(III) removal were tested. G2C at a S/L of 5 mg L^-1 and an initial pH of 4.50 presented an uptake capacity significantly higher than CAC (7.29 and 2.59 mg g^-1, respectively). G2C was used in Cr(III) removal assays from an industrial wastewater with Cr(III) concentrations of 50, 100 and 200 mg L^-1. Cr(III) removal by precipitation (uptake capacity ranging from 11.1 to 14.9 mg g^-1) was more effective in G2C, while adsorption (uptake capacity of 16.1 mg g^-1) was the main removal mechanism in CAC.

Long-Term Peritoneal Dialysis Experience in Portugal

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) penetration varies widely. Since the beginning of this therapy, indications have changed and outcomes have improved. In Portugal, PD still remains clearly underutilized.

The results of a 20 year PD programme were evaluated: 312 cumulative patients, 48±16 years, 27% >60 years old, 27% diabetic, 59% with prior hemodialysis (HD). The main reason for admission was vascular access failure (48.7%). Admission due to patient preference has increased significantly between first and second decades of the programme (33% vs 47% (P<0.001)); 98 patients (31.4%) were treated with automated PD but this prescription increased to 43% of the active patients.

A total of 376 Tenckhoff catheters were surgically implanted, recently by the Popovich-Moncrief technique (77 catheters): the cumulative survival was 82%, 64% and 50% at 1, 3 and 5 years, respectively. A better catheter survival was found in the last decade (85.7%, 69.6%, 54.8% versus 77.3%, 55.5%, 40.2%, at 1, 3 and 5 years, respectively (P=0.007).

The patient and technique cumulative survivals were 91, 74, 55% and 85, 67, 41%, at 1, 3, and 5 years, respectively.

The main drop-out was to hemodialysis (35.8%), followed by death (23.7%), and transplantation (21.5%). Peritonitis and access-related infections caused 35% of the transfer to HD. Cardiovascular events caused 58% of deaths. The median PD retention was 35.5 months. The rate of peritonitis has decreased to one episode /30 patient months. Hospital admission has also decreased to 4.8 days/patient year.

This is a first report on long-term PD experience in Portugal. It has been an effective modality of renal replacement therapy, reflected by the growing patient preference in our PD programme. Experience, knowledge and new technical solutions have improved the outcomes.

Properties of chars from the gasification and pyrolysis of rice waste streams towards their valorisation as adsorbent materials

Rice straw (RS), rice husk (RH) and polyethylene (PE) were blended and submitted to gasification and pyrolysis processes. The chars obtained were submitted to textural, chemical, and ecotoxic characterisations, towards their possible valorisation. Gasification chars were mainly composed of ashes (73.4-89.8wt%), while pyrolysis chars were mainly composed of carbon (53.0-57.6wt%). Silicon (Si) was the major mineral element in all chars followed by alkaline and alkaline-earth metal species (AAEMs). In the pyrolysis chars, titanium (Ti) was also a major element, as the feedstock blends contained high fractions of PE which was the main source of Ti. Gasification chars showed higher surface areas (26.9-62.9m²g^-1) and some microporosity, attributed to porous silica. On the contrary, pyrolysis chars did not present a porous matrix, mainly due to their high volatile matter content. The gasification bed char produced with 100% RH, at 850°C, with O₂ as gasification agent, was selected for further characterization. This char presented the higher potential to be valorised as adsorbent material (higher surface area, higher content of metal cations with exchangeable capacity, and lowest concentrations of toxic heavy metals). The char was submitted to an aqueous leaching test to assess the mobility of chemical species and the ecotoxic level for V. fischeri. It was observed that metallic elements were significantly retained in the char, which was attributed mainly to its alkaline character. This alkaline condition promoted some ecotoxicity level on the char eluate that was eliminated after the pH correction.

Adding value to gasification and co-pyrolysis chars as removal agents of Cr3

The present work aims to assess the efficiency of chars, obtained from the gasification and co-pyrolysis of rice wastes, as adsorbents of Cr³⁺ from aqueous solution. GC and PC chars, produced in the gasification and co-pyrolysis, respectively, of rice husk and polyethylene were studied. Cr³⁺ removal assays were optimised for the initial pH value, adsorbent mass, contact time and Cr³⁺ initial concentration. GC showed a better performance than PC with about 100% Cr³⁺ removal, due to the pH increase that caused Cr precipitation. Under pH conditions in which the adsorption prevailed (pH<5.5), GC presented the highest uptake capacity (21.1mg Cr³⁺ g^-1 char) for the following initial conditions: 50mg Cr³⁺ L^-1; pH 5; contact time: 24h;L/S ratio: 1000mLg^-1. The pseudo-second order kinetic model showed the best adjustment to GC experimental data. Both the first and second order kinetic models fitted well to PC experimental data. The ion exchange was the dominant phenomenon on the Cr³⁺ adsorption by GC sample. Also, this char significantly reduced the ecotoxicity of Cr³⁺ solutions for the bacterium Vibrio fischeri. GC char proved to be an efficient material to remove Cr³⁺ from aqueous solution, without the need for further activation.

Handgrip strength measurement as a predictor of hospitalization costs

BACKGROUND

Undernutrition status at hospital admission is related to increased hospital costs. Handgrip strength (HGS) is an indicator of undernutrition, but the ability of HGS to predict hospitalization costs has yet to be studied.

OBJECTIVE

To explore whether HGS measurement at hospital admission can predict patient's hospitalization costs.

SUBJECTS/METHODS

A prospective study was conducted in a university hospital. Inpatient's (n=637) HGS and undernutrition status by Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment were ascertained. Multivariable linear regression analysis, computing HGS quartiles by sex (reference: fourth quartile, highest), was conducted in order to identify the independent predictors of hospitalization costs. Costs were evaluated through percentage deviation from the mean cost, after adjustment for patients' characteristics, disease severity and undernutrition status.

RESULTS

Being in the first or second HGS quartiles at hospital admission increased patient's hospitalization costs, respectively, by 17.5% (95% confidence interval: 2.7-32.3) and 21.4% (7.5-35.3), which translated into an increase from €375 (58-692) to €458 (161-756). After the additional adjustment for undernutrition status, being in the first or second HGS quartiles had, respectively, an economic impact of 16.6% (1.9-31.2) and 20.0% (6.2-33.8), corresponding to an increase in hospitalization expenditure from €356 (41-668) to €428 (133-724).

CONCLUSIONS

Low HGS at hospital admission is associated with increased hospitalization costs of between 16.6 and 20.0% after controlling for possible confounders, including undernutrition status. HGS is an inexpensive, noninvasive and easy-to-use method that has clinical potential to predict hospitalization costs.

Incidence of bovine leukocyte adhesion deficiency, complex vertebral malformation, and deficiency of uridine-5-monophosphate synthase carriers in Brazilian Girolando cattle

Among the various hereditary diseases that have been widely studied in dairy cattle, bovine leukocyte adhesion deficiency (BLAD), deficiency of uridine-5-monophosphate synthase (DUMPS), and complex vertebral malformation (CVM) are noteworthy because of their high impact on overall herd productivity as a consequence of increased calf mortality. The aim of this study was to verify the frequency of carriers of BLAD, CVM, and DUMPS mutant alleles in cows and bulls from the National Girolando Progeny Test carried out in Brazil by using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-restriction fragment length polymorphism and allele-specific PCR assays. A total of 777 animals were genotyped for BLAD, 783 for CVM, and 122 for DUMPS. The frequencies of carriers for BLAD and CVM were 0.77 and 1.53%, respectively, whereas no carriers of DUMPS were observed.

Hyperuricemia in adult renal allograft recipients: prevalence and predictors

BACKGROUND

Hyperuricemia is a common complication after kidney transplantation that may adversely affect graft survival.

OBJECTIVE

Our aim was to determine the prevalence of hyperuricemia in a sample of adult kidney graft recipients and to investigate its predictors.

METHODS

A total of 302 patients were included in the study. We used univariate analyses to compare clinical characteristics between the hyper-and normouricemic groups. We used multivariate adjusted logistic regression to detect independent predictors of hyperuricemia. Hyperuricemia was defined as serum uric acid ≥6.5 mg/dL in women and ≥7.0 mg/dL in men or allopurinol use.

RESULTS

The patients had a mean age of 49.6 ± 13.4 years, a median posttransplantation time of 7.6 years, and a mean estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of 51.9 ± 18.46 mL/min. The prevalence of hyperuricemia was 42.1% (n = 127). Hyperuricemic patients were predominately male (P = .004), older (P = .038), and with lower eGFR (P < .001). They also had a higher prevalence of hypertension (P = .001), dyslipidemia (P = .004) and proteinuria (P = .001). Multivariate adjusted regression model showed as significant predictors of hyperuricemia: male gender (odds ratio [OR], 2.46; P = .002); impaired renal function (OR 1.33 for every 10 mL/min reduction in eGFR; P < .001), higher body weight (OR 1.09 for every 1 kg/m(2) increase of body mass index; P = .044), prednisolone use (OR 2.12; P = .035), and cyclosporine versus tacrolimus use (OR 2.44; P = .039).

CONCLUSIONS

The prevalence of posttransplant hyperuricemia was high, particularly in patients with classical cardiovascular risk factors and lower eGFR. However, our findings suggest that modifiable immunosuppression options could play a role in its management.

Expression of IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and iNOS in pregnant women with periodontal disease

Periodontal disease is one of the most prevalent oral diseases. An association between this disease and pregnancy has been suggested, but available findings are controversial. We evaluated the expression levels of interleukins (IL-1β and IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in pregnant women with and without periodontal disease in comparison with non-pregnant women with and without periodontal disease since studies have suggested a relationship between periodontitis and the expression levels of these genes. The women in the sample were distributed into four groups: pregnant and non-pregnant women, with or without periodontal disease, a total of 32 women. The periodontal condition was evaluated according to the probing depth, clinical attachment level and bleeding on probing. Analysis of gene expression was performed by real-time PCR. Comparisons were made of the level of gene expression among the four groups. Expression of IL-1β in the non-pregnant women with periodontal disease was 12.6 times higher than in the non-pregnant women without periodontal disease (P < 0.01), while expression of TNF-α in the non-pregnant women without periodontal disease was 3.5 times higher than in the pregnant women with periodontal disease (P < 0.05). Despite these differences, our overall findings indicate no differences in the expression levels of the cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and iNOS in pregnant women with and without periodontal disease in comparison with expression of the same genes in non-pregnant women with and without periodontal disease, suggesting that periodontal disease is not influenced by pregnancy.

Spittle protein profile of Mahanarva spectabilis (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) fed various elephant grass genotypes

An understanding of the interaction between spittlebugs and forage grasses is essential for establishing factors that favor productive pastures. In the present study, we evaluated the protein profiles of the spittle of Mahanarva spectabilis (Distant, 1909) (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) fed various elephant grass genotypes. Each plant was infested with a single fifth-instar M. spectabilis. After 24 h, samples of the spittle produced by each nymph were collected and stored at -20°C, after which their protein profiles were analyzed. The exclusivity or interactions of the proteins present in the spittle produced by the insects revealed the susceptibility of the tested genotypes. The results indicate that groups of genotypes show identical spittle protein profiles when subjected to attack by spittlebugs. Resistant and susceptible elephant grass genotypes exhibited high similarity indices within each group. The similarity index was low for the resistance control species (Brachiaria brizantha) compared with that of the tested elephant grass genotypes. Qualitative and quantitative studies of the proteins expressed in the most promising materials will be performed in an ongoing genetic improvement program seeking to develop genotypes resistant to spittlebugs, which are the main biotic pests of elephant grasses.

Physico-chemical properties of chars obtained in the co-pyrolysis of waste mixtures

The present work aims to perform a multistep upgrading of chars obtained in the co-pyrolysis of PE, PP and PS plastic wastes, pine biomass and used tires. The quality of the upgraded chars was evaluated by measuring some of their physico-chemical properties in order to assess their valorisation as adsorbents' precursors. The crude chars were submitted to a sequential solvent extraction with organic solvents of increasing polarity (hexane, mixture 1:1 v/v hexane:acetone and acetone) followed by an acidic demineralization procedure with 1M HCl solution. The results obtained showed that the upgrading treatment allow the recovery of 63-81% of the pyrolysis oils trapped in the crude chars and a reduction in the char's ash content in the range of 64-86%. The textural and adsorption properties of the upgraded chars were evaluated and the results indicate that the chars are mainly mesoporous and macroporous materials, with adsorption capacities in the range of 3.59-22.2 mg/g for the methylene blue dye. The upgrading treatment allowed to obtain carbonaceous materials with quality to be reused as adsorbents or as precursors for activated carbon.
