Deep Sea Microplastic Pollution Extends Out to Sediments in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean Margins

Microplastics are ubiquitous emerging contaminants found in every habitat surveyed, building upon international databases globally. Costs and accessibility often correlate to few deep sea sediment surveys, restricting the number of stations within a given sampling area. An extensive survey of the Porcupine Seabight, Porcupine Bank, the Goban Spur, and south-western canyons resulted in identifying microplastics in deep sea sediment surface layers from 33 of the 44 stations sampled (75%), with a total of 83 particles (74 synthetic and 9 natural) recorded. No microplastic hotspots were identified, and abundances (kg d.w.^-1) were not correlated with distance from land, depth, or the presence of macrolitter on the seafloor. Understanding the sources of deep sea microplastics, such as marine traffic, is crucial to developing effective mitigation strategies as well as further monitoring campaigns targeting microplastic pollution in areas with significant deep sea biodiversity such as the Porcupine Seabright.

Multivariate statistical analysis of distribution of deep-water gorgonian corals in relation to seabed topography on the Norwegian margin

Investigating the relationship between deep-water coral distribution and seabed topography is important for understanding the terrain habitat selection of these species and for the development of predictive habitat models. In this study, the distribution of the deep-water gorgonians, Paragorgia arborea and Primnoa resedaeformis, in relation to terrain variables at multiple scales of 30 m, 90 m and 170 m were investigated at Røst Reef, Traena Reef and Sotbakken Reef on the Norwegian margin, with Ecological Niche Factor Analysis applied. To date, there have been few published studies investigating this aspect of gorgonian distribution. A similar correlation between the distribution of P. arborea and P. resedaeformis and each particular terrain variable was found at each study site, but the strength of the correlation between each variable and distribution differed by reef. The terrain variables of bathymetric position index (BPI) and curvature at analysis scales of 90 m or 170 m were most strongly linked to the distribution of both species at the three geographically distinct study sites. Both gorgonian species tended to inhabit local topographic highs across all three sites, particularly at Sotbakken Reef and Traena Reef, with both species observed almost exclusively on such topographic highs. The tendency for observed P. arborea to inhabit ridge crests at Røst Reef was much greater than was indicated for P. resedaeformis. This investigation identifies the terrain variables which most closely correlate with distribution of these two gorgonian species, and analyzes their terrain habitat selection; further development of predictive habitat models may be considered essential for effective management of these species.

Sources and geochemical constraints of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments and mussels of two Northern Irish Sea-loughs

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were sampled from 30 sediment and 8 mussel (Mytilus edulis) stations in two Northern Irish Sea-toughs. Analysis was performed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Sedimentary organic carbon, % silt/clay and mean grain size were analysed in order to assess the role of geochemistry on PAH distribution. With the exception of two sites in Larne Lough representing localized regions of high contamination, sum(PAHs) in sediments ranged between 83 and 2300 ng g(-1). Regression analysis indicated that particle size and organic C were dominant factors in controlling the distribution of PAHs throughout the sediments. Sources of PAHs in both sea-loughs were dominated by pyrogenic inputs suggesting that diffuse sources such as atmospheric deposition may be a major source to both water bodies. The sum of PAHs in mussels ranged between 95 and 184 ng g(-1). Variations in concentrations may be explained by differences in the condition between mussel populations. Mussels in both sea-loughs exhibit similar metabolic activities towards the PAH compounds which were predominantly bioaccumulated from sediments.

Assessment of self-report in HIV surveillance: a pilot study

The basis of HIV exposure category classification was investigated among selected cases of newly diagnosed HIV infection. Questionnaires seeking specific information on patient-reported exposure to HIV were forwarded to doctors who had requested the HIV antibody test for patients who met the study sample criteria. The cases of interest were those newly diagnosed between 1 January and 31 October 1991 and notified to state and territory health authorities as having been attributed to exposures to HIV other than male homosexual contact or receipt of blood, blood products or tissue. A total of 158 questionnaires was forwarded and 59 per cent were returned. Among the returned questionnaires included in the study sample, exposure to HIV on the original notification to the health authority was given as injecting drug use (8 per cent, 3 of 37), heterosexual contact (46 per cent, 17 of 37), or unavailable (46 per cent, 17 of 37). A clear basis for HIV exposure category classification was provided on the questionnaires for 70 per cent (7 of 10) of cases among women, whereas among men whose infection was attributed to heterosexual contact, a basis for exposure category classification was specified for only 43 per cent (10 of 23) of cases. Although the study was limited by the low response rate, use of the questionnaire provided a relatively simple means for assessing self-reported HIV exposure history.

Quantitation of free kappa light chains in serum and urine using a monoclonal antibody based inhibition enzyme-linked immunoassay

The murine monoclonal antibody K-1-21 with specificity for free but not heavy chain-associated kappa chains was used to develop an inhibition enzyme immunoassay for quantitation of free kappa chains in serum and urine. The assay utilizes a biotin conjugate of the monoclonal antibody and has an effective working concentration range of 0.5-50 micrograms/ml free kappa chain. Normal serum and urine yielded mean values of 1.2 and 4.9 micrograms/ml respectively using this assay system. Serum levels in patients with kappa chain myelomatosis ranged from 2 to 1700 micrograms/ml while serum from patients with lambda chain malignancies exhibited normal free kappa chain levels. The importance of the ability to readily quantitate light chains in serum was demonstrated by the finding in one patient of an absence of free kappa chains in the urine despite elevated levels of serum kappa chains. A significant drop in serum-free kappa chain levels was observed in this patient following a course of chemotherapy. The assay should prove valuable in the diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring of B cell neoplasias characterized by free kappa light chain secretion.
