Abstract
Acerola (Malpighia emarginata DC) by-product (ABP) has bioactive compounds that can provide antioxidant and hypolipidemic effects in vivo. In this study we aimed to evaluate the antioxidant potential of ABP on oxidative damage along the enterohepatic axis of rats fed a high-fat diet for 7 weeks. In addition, we analysed the phenolic compound profile in the enterohepatic axis, and the lipid accumulation in the liver, colon and liver tissue structure of high-fat diet-fed rats treated with fenofibrate drug (100 mg/kg) or ABP (400 mg/kg) via orogastric administration in the 4th to 7th weeks of the experiment. ABP had increased antioxidant potential in vitro and presented ascorbic acid (2022.06 μg/g), carotenoid (2.63 μg/g), and total phenolic compound (5366.44 μg/g) contents. The high-fat diet-fed rats that received ABP (compared to fenofibrate treatment) presented a non-significant reduction of 9.87% in guanine oxidation product, lower relative liver weight, degree of hepatic steatosis, and aspartate aminotransferase level in their blood. ABP also provided high-fat diet-fed rats: an increased amount of total phenolic compounds in caecal digesta (946.42 µg/g), faeces (3299.07 µg/g), colon (256.15 µg/g) and hepatic tissues (454.80 µg/g); higher total antioxidant capacity in plasma and colon; and lower lipid peroxidation in plasma, colonic and hepatic tissues. The results point to the potential antioxidant activity of ABP against oxidative damage along the enterohepatic axis caused by high-fat diet intake. The ABP had a greater protective effect on the healthy liver compared to fenofibrate treatment due to its bioactive compound content.

Abstract
In the field of Brain Machine Interfaces (BMI) researchers still are not able to produce clinically viable solutions that meet the requirements of long-term operation without the use of wires or batteries. Another problem is neural compatibility with the electrode probes. One of the possible ways of approaching these problems is the use of semiconductor biocompatible materials (silicon carbide) combined with an integrated circuit designed to operate with low power consumption. This paper describes a low-power neural signal amplifier chip, named Cortex, fabricated using 0.18 μm CMOS process technology with all electronics integrated in an area of 0.40 mm(2). The chip has 4 channels, total power consumption of only 144 μW, and is impedance matched to silicon carbide biocompatible electrodes.

Abstract
Microsatellite markers were developed for the endangered Brazilian orchid species Cattleya coccinea to describe its genetic diversity and structure and to support conservation studies. Nine microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized using an enriched genomic library. All loci are polymorphic at least in the 2 populations sampled, except for loci Cac05 and Cac09 for the Petrópolis population. The mean number of alleles per locus was 8.8 between populations. The mean values of the observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.541 (ranging from 0 to 1) and 0.639 (ranging from 0 to 0.9), respectively. Cross-amplifications were performed in 7 additional Epidendroideae species, and at least 2 loci were successful in 3 additional Cattleya species, Epidendrum secundum, and Brasiliorchis gracilis. All markers described herein will be useful in further studies evaluating the genetic diversity, population dynamics, and conservation genetics of C. coccinea and related species.

Abstract
We introduce a class of small-world networks--homogeneous small-worlds--which, in contrast with the well-known Watts-Strogatz small-worlds, exhibit a homogeneous connectivity distribution, in the sense that all nodes have the same number of connections. This feature allows the investigation of pure small-world effects, detached from any associated heterogeneity. Furthermore, we use at profit the remarkable similarity between the properties of homogeneous small worlds and the heterogeneous small-worlds of Watts-Strogatz to assess the separate roles of heterogeneity and small-world effects. We investigate the dependence on these two mechanisms of the threshold for epidemic outbreaks and also of the coevolution of cooperators and defectors under natural selection. With respect to the well-studied regular homogeneous limits, we find a subtle interplay between these mechanisms. While they both contribute to reduce the threshold for an epidemic outburst, they exhibit opposite behavior in the evolution of cooperation, such that the overall results mask the true nature of their individual contribution to this process.

Abstract
We report the case of a 32-year-old woman with isolated angiitis of the central nervous system. This case shows that high levels of pleocytosis may not rule out isolated angiitis of the central nervous system if this diagnosis can be considered on clinical grounds.

Abstract
We report a patient with longstanding rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who developed pure red cell aplasia. This condition is a rare complication of RA. Our patient recovered, apparently in response to treatment with corticosteroids and cyclophosphamide followed by azathioprine.

Abstract
Systemic vasculitis is a clinical and pathological process characterized by inflammation and damage to blood vessels. Within the entire spectrum of vasculitis virtually any size or type of blood vessel in any organ system can be involved. Vasculitis may be the primary feature of the disease or may accompany or complicate other connective tissue diseases.Immunopathogenic mechanisms are thought to be implicated in most vasculitides. In recent years several of the serious vasculitides, such as Wegener's granulomatosis and polyarteritis nodosa, which previously had a poor prognosis, have now been shown to be responsive to cytotoxic therapy, particularly to treatment with cyclophosphamide.
